For the first time I saw breaded hoki advertised at my local grocery store. It is frozen, though.

I'm buying the fresh striped marlin fillets to grill for the weekend.

I thought that other recipe for hoki on the link I posted sounded really good: Hoki with patatas bravas. We're planning to try both of those recipes with fish.

One thing that I loved in your homeland, Bronte, was Pavlova. The waiter took a picture of me in Auckland with my Pavlova that I'd ordered for dessert. Yummy!

I love Hoki, It is one of my favourite fish. I'm a Kiwi and it is common there (I live the UK at the moment).

When I make it I usually bread it in milk then flour then beaten egg and finally breadcrumbs and add some spices to the flour and/or herbs to the breadcrumbs.
Then bake it in the oven, and serve with baked potato chunks, fresh steamed vege and a wedge of lemon. Mmm Tasty

I list it under cod.

Hokey Pokey is something completely different, either in it's pure form or as an ice cream flavour.
Mmm Hokey Pokey Ice cream

B, that sounds excellent just the way you cooked it. I'll have to try that the next time I see fresh talapia on sale here.

Thanks so much for all your help. That recipe you posted Older sounds wonderful. I should have posted earlier in a day but have had one of those overly busy days and it isn't over yet. I went ahead and cooked it up by breading it in a garlic herb bread crumbs and pan frying it in evoo. It was like a mild cross between talapia and orange roughy, a mild white fish. It was good. We topped it off with Lime juice on top. I had it with green beans and a spinach and raspberry salad. It was a good dinner and everyone was happy with it except my non fish eater.

Thanks, I couldn't find anything under Hokey; I didn't think to look under Hokey-Pokey, because I thought I knew what that was. LOL Learning is always fun, really. That recipe looked really good!

OK I was all kinds of confused until OLDER gave the correct spelling of the name, HOKI. It's a Blue Grenadier which is in the Hake family. You should be able to look up some Portuguese Silver Hake recipes that would be comparable. It's actually part of what they use in the McDonald's Filet O'Fish. They claim it's a eco-friendly choice over cod... but I don't think anything that is farmed is eco-friendly. I'm against buying farm raised fish. But thanks for helping me learn about a new fish tonight.

The reference I found: Hoki is similar to Ocean cod, mild white, flaky. I found several complicated recipes, but the 2 that sounded the best were on BBC.

Pan-fried hoki with herb crust and Brie and sweet potato sauce
by Ross Burden from Ready Steady Cook
Serves 2

Preparation time less than 30 mins
Cooking time 10 to 30 mins

Ingredients

For the pan-fried hoki
200g/7oz hoki
1 egg, beaten
100g/3½oz fresh breadcrumbs
2 tbsp chopped mixed fresh herbs, (basil, parsley, chives)
1 tbsp olive oil
For the Brie and sweet potato sauce
2 tsp olive oil
1 shallot, finely chopped
1 garlic clove, finely chopped
¼ sweet potato, peeled, finely chopped and boiled until soft
75g/2½oz Brie, chopped
1 tbsp double cream
salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method

1. Heat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Roll the hoki in the beaten egg, then in the breadcrumbs and then in the mixed chopped herbs. Pat with hands to secure the herbs.
2. Heat the olive oil and pan fry the fish for two minutes on each side. Place on a baking tray in the oven and roast for five minutes or until cooked through.
3. To make the sauce, heat the oil, add the shallot and garlic and cook gently for two minutes. Add the sweet potato and cook for another minute, stirring well. Add the Brie and double cream, stir to combine and season well. Cook for two minutes.
4. To serve, place the hoki on a plate and spoon over the sauce.

He said it is new from New Zealand. I googled Hokey and got TMI. Then I googled hokey fish and got restaraunt reviews on the hokey fish from New Zealand. He said it is similar to orange roughy. I may just bread it in ww flour and fry up in olive oil.

I've heard of it but have never tried it. I saw it on a menu when we were in Australia. Here is my favorite orange roughy recipe from cooking light.

Lime-Scented Orange Roughy and Spinach

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 cup thinly sliced carrot
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 teaspoon salt, divided
1 (10-ounce) package fresh baby spinach
1/3 cup sliced green onions
1/4 cup mirin (sweet rice wine)
1 teaspoon grated lime rind
3 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1 teaspoon grated peeled fresh ginger
4 (6-ounce) orange roughy fillets
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
4 lime wedges

Preheat oven to 400°.
Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add carrot; sauté 2 minutes or until tender. Add garlic; sauté 15 seconds. Add 1/4 teaspoon salt and spinach; sauté 2 minutes or until spinach wilts.

Combine 1/4 teaspoon salt, green onions, and next 4 ingredients (through grated ginger).

Fold 4 (16 x 12-inch) sheets heavy-duty foil in half lengthwise. Open foil; place about 1/2 cup spinach in center of each foil sheet. Top each with 1 fillet. Drizzle mirin mixture evenly over fillets; sprinkle evenly with black pepper. Fold foil over fillets; tightly seal edges. Place foil packets in a single layer on a jelly-roll pan. Bake at 400° for 20 minutes or until fish flakes easily when tested with a fork. Serve with lime wedges.

Did the person at the counter have suggestions as to how to fix it? At some markets, the staff is very knowledgeable.

That's a new one on me. I just looked at cookinglight, cooks, and epicurious.com, and got no search results for "hokey." I'd probably go with some of the recipes I use snapper or tilapia; one I think is from cookinglight.com, with tomatoes and olives find.myrecipes.com/recipes/recipefin
de

Mark Bittman has a simple roast fish technique; melt butter in the roasting pan, chop up some herbs and shallots, and place the fish in the pan skin side up. Depending on the thickness and density of the fish, roast for 10-15 min, then turn and roast for an additional 10-15 min. When I'm feeling lazy, I put in asparagus spears in butter to roast along the fish.

Those are my simple suggestions, for an experiment to see how the fish tastes. I'm curious to learn what you discover and recommend. emoticon

Not only have I not heard of it, a quick Yahoo! search reveals no fish by that name. I wonder if there's anything else it is called? Stores like to do that, LOL. Get you to buy something new that really isn't.

At the store today they had a new fish on sale that they've never carried before and I've never heard of. I bought some. It is similar to orange roughy.

Has anyone tried hokey and how was it cooked. Any good recipes? I checked spark recipes and it wasn't in there in fact it isn't even on the food list.
