May 7 - Being content by helping others.

Philippians 4:11-13 11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. 12 I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

The letter to the church in Philippe was written by Paul from a prison cell in Rome. Paul had all the reason in the world not to be content

This fascinates me that a man in prison could be worried about the church in Philippine being content. I think we all know how it feels to be down. I know that when I feel down I'm sure not worried about how someone else is feeling but this is the secret that Paul is trying to teach us.

Paul is saying the best way to be content is to find a way to help someone.

Just a thought

Today let us pray that believers throughout the church will grow in rela¬tionship with Jesus as they follow their path of discipleship.

May 5 - Learn to be content in the “what is”

Philippians 4:11-13 11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. 12 I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

The first thing we see in this scripture is that we must learn to be content. Contentment is not a natural state of mind. We have a tendency to be always looking at the down side of things. Looking at the “what was” and the “what if” instead of the “what is”.

The “what is” is the only thing that realy counts. The “what is” is what is happing now and right now everything is all right. In the “what is” we have what we need. We have food to eat and a place to stay. We have life and the promise of eternal life.

But Paul says even if thing are not all right in the “what is” we can still learn to be content. Paul is writing this letter to the church in Philippi from prison and you would think that in prison Paul would not be content. Not so, Paul tells us that he has learned to be content even in prison.

The “what was”, the yesterday is over and we need to put it away and the “what if”, the tomorrow is not a reality. It is projecting in our mind things that could happen but has not realy happened and this can only destroy the “what is”, the today and our contentment.

Contentment is living in the “what is” putting away the “what was”, yesterday and not anticipating or focusing on the “what if” the tomorrow. Contentment comes from living in the now, the today.

Does any of this make any sense? Good then explain it to me.

Just a thought

Today let us pray that Jesus will be at the center of every ministry, service, and event that takes place within the church and congregation.

May 4 - I Have Learned to be Content

Philippians 4:11-13 11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. 12 I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

Contentment is a matter of your mind it’s all about your thinking. For the next few days we will be looking at “how to be content in where we and what we have”. These posts have been taken from a sermon that I preached at a nursing home, a place where you find very little contentment. Yes even in a nursing home, hospital or a wheel chair you can find contentment. You just need to keep your eyes on Jesus the author of contentment.

There are four things that will try to steal your contentment.
1. Circumstances – looking at things that are happening in your life. Things happen, one day everything is all right the next day everything has changed.
2. People can steal your contentment – Yes people can steal your contentment. It's a proven fact that we often take on the attitude of those around us. If those around you are always complaining then most likely we will start complaining. I heard it once said we can be a thermometer or a thermostat. A thermometer registers the temperature around you a thermostat creates the temperature.
3. Desire for the thing of the world – looking at what you do not have and not at what you do have. You will always find someone that has more than you and if you allow it, this can also steal away your contentment.
4. Security – placing your trust in man or things can steal your contentment. Place your trust in God and not in man or things. When you place your trust things you will find that things wear out or break. Things change and are often lost or stolen so when things are gone we often become complexed or discontented.

We need to put our trust in God. God never changes in God we will find contentment.

Just a thought

Today let us pray for the shut-ins in our church, as well as those who are widowed and living alone. Ask God to bless and encourage them, anointing their lives with power for ministry as well as help for the needs they face daily.

May 3 - God’s Creation Today

Psalm 118:24 This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

This verse is not new to us. We often recite it and even sing it. It tells us of God's loving care for us.

We speak of God creating the world and all that is in the world but too often we fail to really think about what this means. It means that everything that is here in this world is here because of God. From the smallest insect to the largest star.

Not only did God create the world but God maintains it daily. God is still in the creating business. You see God created today and everything that is in today. Today, the day were living was God's creation this morning. So this being true we can truly say “This is the day the Lord has made we will rejoice and be glad in it”.

Just a thought

Today let us pray that the youth in our church will stand strong for Christ in their schools and with their friends. Ask God to help each young person to follow His plan for their lives, both now and in the years to come.

April 29
8 Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. (John 5:8)

Notice Jesus did not tell the man that he was healed, Jesus told the man to do what a healed man would do. It took an action of the man for the healing to take place. Had the man not preformed the action he would not have received his healing. Faith is always accompanied by an action.

What if the man said “I can’t “Rise, take up thy bed, and walk” I’m a cripple. Jesus is showing us something here, “we are what we profess to be. If we say were a cripple then we are a cripple. The paralytic had to have enough faith to believe that he could do what he could not do simply because Jesus said he could.

John tells us that the man did what Jesus told him to do and he was healed. Down for 38 years in sickness and up in less than a minute in faith believing ---- total healing.

Just a thought

Today let us pray that marriages and family relationships throughout the congregation will be strengthened.

April 30 - - - God will deliver us.

Psalm 34:19 - - - A righteous man may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all.

God didn’t promise us a life that would be a bed of roses. Christians deal with pain and suffering the same as the rest of the world but what God did promise us was that “the Lord delivers him from them all”.

I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have God to run to.

April 29 - - - There is a way that seemeth right.

Proverbs 16:25 There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

What this is saying is that our reasoning may tell us that we need to go a certain way or do a certain thing but if we follow after this way we may find that it is wrong and leads to death.

For example, for years I believed that if I was good I would go to Heaven and if I was bad I would go to hell so I tried as hard as I could to be good. Now this sure seemed right but if I followed after that way and had not found the truth that salvation is found only in Jesus, this would have led to death.

Salvation comes only by our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. It is not earned it is a gift. This is called God's GRACE.

Today let us pray that members of the congregation will convey a strong witness of the gospel to their community, through integrity, love, and godliness.

April 27 - - - Pray for our Children and Grandchildren

Deuteronomy 28:12-13 12 The LORD will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none. 13 The LORD will make you the head, not the tail.

This is the prayer that I pray for my children and grandchildren. That the Lord will open His storehouse and send his bounty of blessing, that they will be the lender and not the borrower and that they will be the head which is the leader and not the tail which is the follower

Just a thought

Today let us pray that God will bless the children of the church, protecting them from harm and helping them to grow strong in the Lord as they prepare for a lifetime of serving Christ.

April 26 - - -- Pray for our Pastors

Exodus 17:10-13 10 So Joshua did what Moses had commanded and fought the army of Amalek. Meanwhile, Moses, Aaron, and Hur climbed to the top of a nearby hill. 11 As long as Moses held up the staff in his hand, the Israelites had the advantage. But whenever he dropped his hand, the Amalekites gained the advantage. 12 Moses’ arms soon became so tired he could no longer hold them up. So Aaron and Hur found a stone for him to sit on. Then they stood on each side of Moses, holding up his hands. So his hands held steady until sunset. 13 As a result, Joshua overwhelmed the army of Amalek in battle.

This is the responsibility that we have to our pastor. As Aaron and Hur lifted the arms of Moses we too are to lift our pastor in prayer. Not only standing with him but also supporting him. We need to pray for our pastor and his family.

More than “Just a thought”

Today let pray for a powerful anointing of the Holy Spirit upon our pastoral leadership.

April 25 - - -- Power of prayer

Matthew 17:20 He (Jesus) told them, - - - - if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.

A few years back it was reported that a woman, who was alone in her house, was confronted by a burglar who was emptying her home of her possessions. She walked in were the burglar was to answer the phone. He ripped the card from the wall and ordered her into the closet. She was obviously afraid for her life, but did not panic.

To the shock of the gunman, Cindy fell to her knees and began to pray for God’s help. Even more stunned was he when she began to pray for him. She proceeded to tell him about Jesus and his love for him and the told him that she forgave him for what he was doing to her.

Apparently this was more than the robber could take. He began to breakdown in tears as he knelt and prayed together with her. To her relief, the man went to the window and told the woman that was with him that they needed to bring all that they had taken back into the house. He told her that this was a Christian woman and we can’t do this to her.

Mrs. Hartman remained on her knees in prayer as they returned her furniture and belongings. The man then used his shirt to wipe off his fingerprints, apologized and departed, leaving his gun behind.

“The power of prayer” - - - What do you think?

Just a thought

Today let us prat that God will grant the pastoral leadership a strong sense of vision for the church and congregation.

April 23 - - -- A prayer partner

Mat 18:19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.

Let’s talk about finding a prayer partner. That person that we can “agree with as touching anything”. That someone we can pray together with for our needs

Now when you chose a prayer partner be careful that you find someone who you can trust. You will be praying for each other’s needs and some of them may be very personal, confidential and privet. You will need someone with a tight lip that will not turn your prayer into gossip

It may take some time to find this right person so be patent. Pray that God will send this person to you.

Now there is a promise attached to this scripture - - “anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven”. Notice it didn’t say some of the things or a few of the things it said anything but there must be an agreement between the two who are praying together.

Just a thought

Today let us pray that God will grant the pastoral leadership vision and guidance regarding the ministry gifts and callings of each member of the congregation, that they might use those gift to the fullness of their potential.

April 22 - - -- -Kingdom, power and glory forever - - (doxology)

Matthew 6:13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Matthew ends the prayer with a doxology. This is found in the King James translation only. A doxology is a short hymn of praises to God

The Lord’s Prayer consists of an opening, a time of praise, six requests and ends with a doxology.

Here in this prayer Jesus gives us a picture of how we are to pray. This was not intended to be a recitation, not saying that it is wrong to recite this prayer. I believe that it gives, both God and ourselves, great joy when we pray this prayer but as we have just seen this was given to us, by Jesus, to instruct us in the proper way to pray

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.-

Just a thought

Today let us pray that God will help the pastoral staff develop strong relationships with other pastors and churches in the community, as well as with community leaders.

April 20 - - - - Deliver us from evil - - (Request 6)

Matthew 6:13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Deliver us from evil or I could say the evil one. We don’t talk much about the evil one anymore. It’s like were saying “if I close my eyes he will go away”. Will I have news for you, when we close our eyes is when he grows stronger.

Right here in this Lord’s Prayer Jesus tells us to pray that we will be delivered from this evil or evil one. We are told in Ephesians that we are to guard ourselves from this evil one by putting on the armor of God. .

Ephesians 6:10-12 10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. 11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Oh by the way Jesus is the amour of God so it’s as simple as putting on Jesus. I heard it once said that when the devil sees us wearing the righteousness of Jesus that he won’t be able to tell if it’s Jesus or if it’s us and he will leave us alone because the devils not about to mess around with Jesus.

“Deliver us from the evil one”

Today let us pray that God will grant the pastoral staff strong health, physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

April 19 - - - - Lead us not into temptation - - (REQUEST 5)

Matthew 6:13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

Lead us not into temptation -Temptation is not sin but it leads to sin. Sin is always preceded by temptation. So the best way to deal with sin is to avoid temptation.

So we are not to only pray that our sin be forgiven but we should pray that we not be confronted with the temptation to sin.

James 1:13-15 13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

Just a thought

Today let us pray that God will strengthen and bless family relationships among our pastoral staff.

April 18 - - - - Forgiving others - - (Requests 4)

Matthew 6:12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

I always get a little nervous when I pray this part of the Lord’s Prayer. Does that mean that my forgiveness from God depends on my forgiving others?

I do not believe that it means that I will be kicked out of heaven no more than it means that I will stop being God child. When I sin against my earthly father it destroys my relationship with him but I am still his son. Our forgiveness from God is unconditional it was taken care of by the blood of Jesus. Jesus took the punishment for our sin, sins I have already committed but sins I have not yet committed, therefor the debt has been paid.

I do believe that forgiving others does have a great bearing on our relationship with God. One thing I know is that my un-forgiveness hinders my prayers from beaning heard.

(Psalms 66: 18) If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me

Just a thought

Today let us pray that the lives of our pastoral staff will be marked by integrity and godliness.

April 14 - - - - Thy will be done - - (PRAISE)

Matthew 6:10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

How can we know God’s will? -- We can know Gods will by knowing the Word of God. This is done by reading the Word of God, by studying the Word of God, by memorizing the Word of God and by meditating in the Word of God. Knowing the Word of God, is knowing the will of God.

For example the Word tells us in 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Therefor according to the Word of God it is God’s will that none should parish. It is God’s will for everyone to enter into eternal life

Salvation is for all men. Romans 5:8 “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were YET SINNERS, Christ died for us”. ---- Even though this gift of salvation is for everyone not everyone will receive it simply because they will not RECEIVE Jesus and His teachings.
John 1:12 12 But as many as RECEIVE HIM (JESUS), to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

April 13 - - - - Thy kingdom come (PRAISE)

Matthew 6:10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

(Colossians 1:13-14) "He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the KINGDOM of the Son of His love...."

Jesus and the teachings of Jesus is the kingdom. John the Baptist preached “the kingdom of heaven is at hand” referring to Jesus. Jesus established Gods kingdom when he died upon the cross for our sins. We enter into this kingdom by faith, believing in Jesus and the cross.

When we pray “thy kingdom come” we are pray that the gospel of salvation be preached and be received.

Just a thought

Today let pray for a powerful anointing of the Holy Spirit upon our pastoral leadership.

April 12 - - - - Hallowed be thy name (praise)

Matthew 6:9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

When we pray “Hollowed be thy name” we enter into a time of praise. In the Old Testament the name of God was considered to be so holy that they would not speak it or write it. For 1500 years, from Moses to Jesus, the name of GOD was never spoken throughout Ancient Israel except on Yom Kippur by the High Priest when he was alone in the innermost part of the Holy Temple would speak His name.

When spoken it was referred to as "A-don-ai," meaning "Lord." When written a space was left open where the name was to be placed. Even today when a Jewish person writes the name of God the vowel is left out and is written "G-d"

I recall when I was a young boy I was taught that the name of Jesus was so holy that when it was spoken I was to bow my head. Nothing has changed the name of Jesus is still that holy.

“Hallowed be thy name”

Just a thought

Today let us pray that members of the congregation will convey a strong witness of the gospel to their community, through integrity, love, and godliness.

April 11 - - - - Our Father in Heaven (Opening)

Matthew 6:9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Which art in Heaven – What do you think of when you think of heaven?

1 Corinthians 2:9 - But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

There is no way we can even comprehend what heaven will be like but one thing I know is that I will stand in the very presence of God.

I heard it once said, a lot of false God’s are worshiped in this world but we worship and pray to the one true God, the God “which art in heaven”.

Just a thought

Today let us pray that God will bless the financial needs of the church, calling believers to give generously and sacrificially through tithes and offerings.

April 09 - - “Our Father”. (Opening)

Matthew 6:9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

“Our Father” We are to pray to the Father. We cannot enter into a father-son relationship with God apart from the cross of Jesus.

John 1:12 “But as many as received him (Jesus), to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name”. So looking at this verse we see apart from salvation it is impossible to call God, Our Father.

The term Father shows a Fathers relationship to his child, A Fathers love, A Fathers correction, A Fathers provision And a Fathers protection.

The term father also shows a child’s relationship to his father, a child’s submission, a child’s obedience and a child’s dependence upon the father for his needs.

So we pray “Our Father”

Just a thought

Today let us pray for members of the congregation battling physical illness or emotional struggles, or facing spiritual needs. Ask God to minister to them in miraculous ways.

April 08 - -The Lord’s Prayer

Matthew 6:9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

We call this the Lord’s Prayer but this is really the model prayer. The Lord’s Prayer is found in John 17. In John 17 Jesus is praying for the Church. In Matthew 6 Jesus is teaching the Church how to pray. We call the model prayer the Lord’s Prayer and there in nothing wrong with this.

The Lord’s Prayer consists of
An opening
A time of praise
6 requests
A doxology

I suppose along with John 3:16 and the 23rd Psalm this is the most quoted scripture in the bible.

Just a thought

Today let up pray that our church services will be marked by displays of supernatural power be it in healings, spiritual gifts, and lives that are dramatically changed by Jesus Christ.

April 07 - - - God knows our prayer before we pray it

Matthew 6:8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.

We don’t need to pray a lot of words explaining everything to God. You see God already knows what we want before we pray.

If God already know what we need before we pray they why do we need to pray? Why doesn’t God just give it to us?

Now that is a very good question and I suppose it has been asked many times. Let me give you a little illustration that might make it easier to understand.

You see when I was a young boy I would use Dads’ car on Saturday night. I would always ask him for it. Even though he knew I wanted to use the car, never once did he give me the car unless I asked. In the Book of James it tells us that we have not because we ask not.

Matthew 21:22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

It’s as simple as asking.

Just a thought

Today let us pray that visitors to the church will sense the love and compassion of Christ, expressed through every member of the congregation.

April 06 - -That they shall be heard for their much speaking

Matthew 6:7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

“Do not use vain repetitions”. Once I listened to a person pray a prayer that lasted over thirty minutes and everything that they prayed could have said in a half a dozen words.

Our beautiful prayers do not impress God. Have you ever said, “I wish I could pray a prayer like Billy Bob, he prays such beautiful prayers. We do not impress God with our beautiful prayers. God looks at the prayer being prayed from the heart not the words coming from the mouth.

When I am in dire need of prayer I would rather have a child pray a broken prayer from the heart then someone praying a beautiful prayer from the flesh.

One of the most powerful prayers I ever heard prayed was prayed in three words. “Jesus help me”.

Just a thought

Today let us pray that Jesus will be at the center of every ministry, service, and event that takes place within the church and congregation.

April 05 - -A good place to pray

Matthew 6:6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

Jesus goes on to tell us the proper way to pray. Jesus tells us that we are to enter into our closet when we pray.

Today when we use the word closet we think of the place where we hang our clothes but that is not what Jesus is speaking of here. Jesus is speaking of a closed place. A place away from all the distractions of the world, a place where we could be alone with God

Your closet can be anywhere. I find that when I'm driving my car is a good place to pray, FOR MORE THE ONE REASON. Driving to work or other places is a good time to be alone with God in prayer. JUST BE SURE YOU KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN.

This is especially true when you’re sitting in traffic. It gives you time to pray for those around you. The lady in the old car that look as if it is unable to run she looks like she’s having a hard time, pray for her. The man in the new car with those high car payment to make each month, pray for him. The lady with her children, pray for her that she will be a good mother and love and raise her children to love the Lord. I find this a great place to pray.

Where is your prayer closet?

Just a thought

Today let us pray that the women in our church will serve as leaders and role models of strength, maturity, and ministry in the church, in their families, and in the community.

April 04 - - How not to pray

Matthew 6:5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

In these scriptures leading up to the Lord’s Prayer Jesus first teaches His disciples how not to pray. and then He goes on to tell them why.

Jesus said, that the hypocrites pray in the synagogues and in the streets, so men will see and hear them. Jesus tells them that they have” received their reward.” In other words if they are praying to be heard by men then that is the only one that will hear there prayer

Does that mean we should not pray aloud in church or in our prayer group? No it simply means that we need to direct our prayers to God and not to man

Have you ever sat in a prayer meeting trying to place together a prayer just in case you are called to pray? Yes we all have but is a prayer like that really being directed to God or is it being directed to those who will be hearing us pray?

Just a thought

Today let us pray that the men in our church will have a powerful impact on its ministries, and that they will provide godly leadership in their homes, the church, and throughout the community.

April 02 - - Do not pray as the hypocrites do.

Jesus told them that they are not to pray as the hypocrites do.

Will if we’re not to pray as the hypocrites do then I think we need to first look at what makes a person a hypocrite.

The Dictionary says
A person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc., that he or she does not actually possess, especially a person whose actions belie stated beliefs.

A person, who pretends they have faith in God, pretends to have moral or religious beliefs. A person who talks one way and lives another. The bible has a lot to say about this person. In this verse it tells me that his prayers will not be heard but the bible says even more about this kind of person.

Matthew 7:21-24
21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

I didn’t say it - - Jesus did.

Just a thought

Today let us pray that God will bless the children of the church, protecting them from harm and helping them to grow strong in the Lord as they prepare for a lifetime of serving Christ.

March 31 - - "However, when the Son of Man comes”

Luke 18:8 - - - However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?

Believing in God, believing in prayer and believing God answers prayer is our act of faith. Will Jesus find this kind of faith when he comes?

Jesus told a parable of a widow being persistent and how she won the victory because she didn't give up hope. But what about us do we sometimes become discouraged when our prayers don’t seem to be answered? Do we stop praying, stop hoping, and stop expecting? Do we pull away from God and just give up, or will we be like the widow, and keep asking till God opens heaven with His response. Jesus told this parable that we might be encouraged.

"Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain." (1 Corinthians 15:58)

Just a thought

Today let us pray for the shut-ins in our church, as well as those who are widowed and living alone. Ask God to bless and encourage them, anointing their lives with power for ministry as well as help for the needs they face daily.

March 30 - - The right answer at the right time

Luke 18:7 "Will he (God) keep putting them off? I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly"
Here we see Jesus applying the truth of this parable. As we look at this parable it would be easy for us to associate God with the unjust judge but we all know that God is not unjust. The point Jesus is make is that if an unjust judge could be moved by the persistence of the widow how much more would a just judge respond.

Often we cry, how long God before you answer our prayer? This is the question that is being asked in verse seven. But this question is also being answered.

No, God will not keep putting us off. God in his time will answer all our prayers. It is easy to become discouraged or disappointed when the answer to our prayer does not come when we expect it. But God’s timing is always right, the right answers at the right time.

The right answers at the right time. That’s worth saying again.

Just a thought

Today let us pray that believers throughout the church will grow in relationship with Christ as they follow the path of discipleship.

March 29 - - It says that she “kept coming.”

Luke 18:4-5 4 And he (the unjust judge) would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man; 5 Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me.

This weak little widow is starting to wear down this powerful big judge. The word " troubleth" comes from a Greek word meaning to wear down or to browbeat. It could be that her coming before him repeatedly was hurting the judge’s reputation. He decided to grant her what she was due just to get rid of her.

Of course we understand that this is only a parable. The parable related to those to whom it was being told. They could relate to the widow and how she was being treated and could rejoice in her receiving justice.

In no way is it saying that God is unjust. It is because of Gods justice that we need to call out for mercy.

Just a thought

Today let us pray that our church family will be united in our worship of God, fellowship with one another, and ministry to the community. Ask God to help believers confront and remove issues and problems that threaten this unity.

March 28 - - It says that she “kept coming.”

Luke 18:3 "And there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, 'Grant me justice against my adversary.' "

“It says that she “kept coming.” This indicated a repeated action. She didn’t come just once, but many times. She kept calling out to the judge "Grant me justice.” The woman wasn’t asking for something that was not hers, she was asking only for justice. To be treated fairly under the law.

One thing you can say about her is that she wouldn’t take no for an answer. Every time court was in session, here she was asking, demanding the justice.

This parable is about being persistent in our praying, This parable is not about calling out for justice. For us to call out for justice would only bring condemnation. We call out for mercy, mercy brings forgiveness.

Just a thought

Today let us pray that marriages and family relationships throughout the congregation will be strengthened.

March 25 - -The judge never feared God

Luke 18:2 "He (Jesus) said: 'In a certain town there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared about men.' "

Jesus introduces us to the judge in this parable by telling us something of this judges’ character. He says that the judge “neither feared God nor cared about man”. This does not sound like very good credentials for a judge.

But this judge neither "Feared God" refers to having faith in God. More than likely did not believe that God existed. “Nor cared about men,” this judge had no concern for those that came before his bench. He was concerned only with himself, his own opinions, his own comfort and his own income.

Sounds almost like a few politicians we have in office today. We could go off the deep end and start talking about our Judges and political leaders but we won’t. That is something that we need to take care of when we cast our vote. What we need to do is to pray for our judges and government leaders. Pray that they will seek God’s wisdom in the way they judge and carry out the law.

Just a thought

Today let us pray for our court system, locally as well as the state courts and the U. S. Supreme Court. Ask God’s blessing and guidance upon judges, and that they would look to Him for help and direction.

March 21 - - The prayer of two men

Luke 18:13-14 13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Now let’s look at the other prayer, the prayer of the publican. The publican came to God in great humility. The Pharisee told God all the reasons God should answer his prayer the publican told God all the reasons God should not answer his prayer.

The publican told God that he was a sinner and that he had no right to ask God for his need. Then the publican prayed the prayer we all should pray the publican prayed for forgiveness and mercy.

Let me ask the question. Which of these prayers do you believe pleased God? Jesus tells us in verse 14 that " - - - this man went down to his house justified. I love that word “justified” - - just as if he had never sinned. That the way God forgives sin, just as if you had never sinned.

What a great forgiving and merciful God.

For the next few days let us pray for God’s protection and provision for our military. Ask that He especially bless and protect those serving in dangerous places and performing dangerous jobs. Ask for His blessing on soldiers and their families as they deal with issues of separation and loneliness.

What is Prayer?

Matthew 7:7-8 7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: 8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

Prayer is asking “Ask and it shall be given to you”. James tells us 'you have not because you ask not'. So we can say that prayer is asking but prayer is also receiving “For every one that asketh receiveth”.

Prayer is talking with God, asking and receiving. Notice I said talking with God not talking to God. I have this good friend who calls to talk to me. I said talk to me not talk with me because I never get to say anything. He tells me what is on his mind then says goodbye. This is often the way we pray. We tell God what is on our mind and then say Amen.

We need to learn to lessen to God when we pray. Yes God does speak to us in prayer but we will never hear Him until we learn to lesson.

Just a thought.

For the next few days let us pray for a supernatural move of God across our nation, bringing a new sense of revival and trust in God.

March 18 - - God can do all things.

Jeremiah 32:27 Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there anything too hard for me?

Prayer is man's acknowledgment of who God is. Prayer is man’s acknowledgment of God being higher and greater than man. Prayer is man’s acknowledgement of God being able to change the situation. Prayer is man’s acknowledgement that God is able to bring health and healing.

So when it looks like there is no solution to our problem we turn to God this Higher Being in prayer to do the impossible.

Jeremiah 32:27 Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there anything too hard for me?

Luke 18:10 10 Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. 11 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. 12 I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess. 13 And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.

Both men went to the same place, at the same time, for the same reason and that was to pray.

The Pharisee prayed in his religious pride. Not asking God but telling or demanding God to answer his prayer because of who he was and the way he lived. I know we would never do this. But then again the Bible is full of prayer promises. There are those that when they pray they hold these promise in front of God demanding God to do what He promised to do. Just be careful what you wave in front of God. Oh by the way God will keep his promises.

We need to understand that most promises from God come with a condition. You do this and God will do that. If a promise is not keep it is never God’s fault we need to check to see if we keep the condition.

God loves to answer your prayers.

For the next few days let us pray for our court system, locally as well as the state courts and the U. S. Supreme Court. Ask God’s blessing and guidance upon judges, and that they would look to Him for help and direction.

If this devotional has blessed you, you may want to share it with a friend.

March 17 - - Let’s talk about prayer

Genesis. 4:26 And to Seth, to him also was born a son; and he called his name Enosh. Then people began to call on the name of Jehovah.

Prayer is as old as man himself. As long as man has been around man has been praying. We see prayer mentioned in the Bible as early as Genesis. 4:26. That would be on about the third or fourth page of your Bible.

After Cane slue Able, Eve had another son whose name was Seth. It says that people began to CALL (PRAY) upon the name of Jehovah.

There are all kinds of prayers, prayers of thanksgiving, prayers of praise and worship, prayers of intercession and prayers of request.

I would like for us to look at the prayer of request. Most prayer’s that are prayed today are prayed because of man’s need. In many cases this is the only time man prays. Even people who calm that they do not believe in God when they find themselves in a threatening situation will turn to prayer. How does the old saying go “you won’t find an atheist in a fox hole.”

Jesus tells us in the Lord’s Prayer to pray for our daily needs. “Give us this day our daily bread”. (Matthew 6:11).

Praying for our daily needs is a good prayer to pray. I heard a preacher once say that the most powerful pray you can pray is “LORD HELP ME”.

Just a thought

Pray that God will provide for those who are hurting and in need, both locally and nationally. Ask that He move on the hearts of believers to help meet needs in as much as they are able to do so.

March 16 - - Why I should Pray

And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to PRAY, and not to faint; (Luke 18:1).

Why I should pray? That a very interesting question, let’s look at what the bible has to say.

Because you are commanded to pray (Matthew 26:41) Watch and PRAY that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

Because prayer is the way God provides for out needs. (James 4:2). Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because YE ASK NOT (PRAY NOT).

Because there is joy in prayer (John 16:24). Hitherto have ye ASKED (PRAYED) nothing in my name: ASK (PRAY), and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.

Because prayer will save you out of all your troubles (Psalms 34:6). This poor man CRIED (PRAYED), and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all of his troubles.

Because prayer can unlock the treasure chest of God's wisdom (James 1:5). If any of you lack wisdom, let him ASK (PRAY) of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

Because prayer is a channel of power (Jeremiah 33:3). (GOD SAID) CALL (PRAY) unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.

Because it is a sin not to pray (1 Samuel 12:23). Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the Lord in CEASING TO PRAY for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way:

Because sinners can be saved when they pray in faith (Romans 10:13) For whosoever shall CALL UPON (PRAY) the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Because Jesus said, men ought always to PRAY

March 15 - - Watching and praying

Nehemiah 4:17-18 They all builded the wall and they that bare burdens laded themselves; every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other held his weapon; 18 and the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me.

Here we see the building of the wall in Jerusalem. There were two groups of people that worked on the wall. There were the ones that were doing the building. They worked with one hand laying the stone and one hand holding the sword. Then there were the ones that walk the wall and watch for the enemy. When they saw the enemy coming they would sounded the trumpet.

Not much has changed. We today are busy doing the work with one hand and holding a sword or I could say praying with the other. We are busy trying to raise our families, working our jobs, doing what we are called upon to do by our church and all the time we are doing these things we are also busy praying and watching for the enemy.

The enemy is that person or things that seemed to come from nowhere to steal from us and our family. Someone else getting the promotion, just about time we get a few dollars ahead the furnace goes out, the car needs new tires. Working and praying. Work with one hand and pray with the other.

Then we have the prayer warrior, that person who is called to walk the wall and watch for the enemy, watching and praying. That special person we go to when we need someone to pray for us.

I’m talking about praying, not saying a prayer but praying. I mean pouring our hearts out to God. Praying and working and praying and watching. I sometimes wonder if we truly understand the power of prayer.

Just a thought

March 14 - - You have not because you ask not

James 4:2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.

I would like for us to spend just a little time today talking about prayer. Everyone has a different opinion as to the proper way to pray, but I don’t believe that this is the problem most of us have because I believe that God hears the prayer of the heart and not so much the words we speak.

1 Samuel 16:7 - - - for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

I believe the problem most of us have is that we just don’t pray. It is believed that most Christians don’t pray until they have a need in their lives.

I once heard it said that it is like this big warehouse in heaven that is bursting with wonderful answers to prayers that are never picked-up simply because the prayer was never prayed. Often those with a need never ask for help simply because they don't really believe they can be helped, or they don’t deserve to be helped, or that the mighty power that created the universe couldn’t possibly be concerned about their little human difficulties. So the answer to their prayer is sitting in heaven waiting for their prayer to be prayed.

I would hate to think that the answer to my prayer and the answer to your prayer in sitting in heavens warehouse just waiting for our prayer to be prayed.

James says it like this - - - “yet ye have not, because ye ask not”.

Just a thought

For the next few days let us pray for our city, state, and nation. Pray that God will bless the efforts of business leaders and owners throughout the city, that economic conditions and employment will be strong.

Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him. (John 3:28 KJV)

John the Baptist is clear -- I am not the person you're looking for. John said I am not the Christ.

Christ is not the last name of Jesus as in Jesus Christ. If we are to say it properly it would be JESUS THE CHRIST. Christ is the title of who Jesus is. Jesus is the Christ which means the ANOITED ONE. The ANOITED one sent of God to save man from his sin.

There had to be this change over from following after John the Baptist to following after Jesus. John 14:6 Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

The something holds true with our Churches. Attending church for all the wrong reason. Being follower of a man because he is such a great preacher. Following after a church because they have such a great praise team. I think preachers and praise teams are great and we need more of them but we are to be followers of Jesus.

March 11 – God knows what’s best for us.

Psalms - Psalm 11;1-2 6 "I love the LORD because he hears and answers my prayers. Because he bends down and listens, I will pray as long as I have breath!"

Wow! I truly love this, I love the Lord because - - -. It says because He hears and answers my prayers. This is so great to know that every prayer I pray is heard and answered.

Wait - - what was that you said? You said some of your prayers are not answered. Could it be that they were not answered in the way you would have them answered. This happens you know.

Yes God does not always answer our prayers in the way we would have them answered but He always answers them in the way he wants them to be answered and God’s way is always the best way.

In Mark 2:4, four men lowered their friend through the roof to Jesus in search of, or I could say, praying for healing. What did Jesus say when the man was placed before Him “your sins are forgiven”. This was not what they were praying for, they were praying for healing and they received forgiveness of sin. Healing would have only taken care of the now, forgiveness of sin took care of eternity. Yes I know healing did come.

God always knows what is best for us. - - - - God sometimes answers prayers the way we prayed, God sometimes answers prayer the way he would have them answered, God sometimes answers prayer by saying we need to wait, other times God answers prayers by saying NO. But God hears every prayer we pray and God answers every prayer He hears.

God’s way is always the best way.

If revival is going to come it will come through the believer. 2 Chronicles 714 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

March 10 – Spiritual Melk of the Word

1 Peter 2:2 is awesome! "You must crave pure spiritual milk so that you can grow into the fullness of your salvation. Cry out for this nourishment as a baby cries for milk, now that you have had a taste of the Lord's kindness.”

What is pure spiritual milk? Pure spiritual milk is the Word of God.
Salvation does not begin at the time of your death but begins at the time of your acceptance of Jesus into your lives.

Salvation is more than just being saved from your sin or being saved for heaven. Salvation also includes life in abundance which includes health and prosperity. Prosperity as in having everything that God has prepared for you to have. To have the fullness of God in you.

Jesus said The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. (John 10:10)

Does your spirit cry out for the nourishment of the milk of the Word? Do you drink deeply of the Word daily?

March 09 – Secret of the Mysteries

1st Corinthians 4:1, Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God.

Paul wrote this letter to the Corinthian church who were being strongly influenced by pagan religions that belief that one’s salvation could be gained by unlocking the secrets to the mysteries. That it was our knowledge, not our faith nor God’s grace that led to our salvation. These were called “Gnostics,” from which we get our word “knowledge.”

So when he wrote of “mysteries of God” Paul was saying that he had the knowledge that they had been searching for. The knowledge of the secret mystery of salvation.

In the gospel given to us by Jesus the mysteries of God is always an open secret. The secret of the mysteries are the things about God and God’s nature, plans and purposes for us in the Lord Jesus Christ.

1st Corinthians 4:1 It tells us that we are to be "stewards of the mysteries of God." Paul, of whom the secret had been revealed, viewed himself as one who was not to keep this a secret. Paul knew he was to proclaim this mystery to the world. He was to proclaim the news of Christ Jesus, the news that Jesus willingly died for the sins of the world and was resurrected on the third day.

We too are also called to proclaim this mystery to the world, our world the world we live in. The person who lives next door, the one we work with, we are to proclaim this mystery to each and every person that moves in and out of our lives daily.

The mystery is not to be keep a mystery, the secret is not to be keep a secret.

March 7 – I will fear no evil

2 Timothy 1:7, 7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

The first step in dealing with fear is knowing that fear is not of God.

So if fear is not of God then we need to address it as such. We do this by taking our stand and speaking the Word of God. Putting our trust and faith in God and in His Holy word. God gives us His promise in Isaiah 41:10 “I [am] with thee: be not dismayed (do not be afraid); for I [am] thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

Isaiah 41:10 “I am with thee” is such a great comfort. It means that when I get up in the morning Jesus is with me, when I go to work Jesus is with me, when I eat lunch Jesus is with me, when I journey home Jesus is with me and when I go to bed Jesus is still with me. 24/7 Jesus is with me.

Jesus tells us in John 14:1, Let not your heart be troubled (do not be afraid) : you believe in God, believe also in me. It is as simple as believing and trusting in God.

God did not give us a spirit of fear but a spirit “of power, and of love, and of a sound mind”. God has given us His Spirit the Holy Spirit with the promise “I will never leave you nor forsake you”. Hebrews 13:5

So instead of walking in fear chose to walk in God’s power, God’s love and in God’s sound mind. 1 Corinthians 2:16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But WE HAVE THE MIND OF CHRIST. - - - YOU HAVE THE MIND OF CHRIST

March 04 – Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me

Psalm 23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

I had a pastor who would say, everywhere you go goodness and mercy is following you. I can't think of two better companions.

When things are going well, God's mercy and goodness is there. When thing are not going well, God's mercy and goodness is there.

I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever

Psa 23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

"I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever" . It says in 1Co 2:9 - - -Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

Eternal life is hard for us to comprehend. Everything in our life has a beginning and an end. So we have nothing to measure it with or compare it to.

In the old song Amazing Grace it says it like this: When we've been their ten thousand years...bright shining as the sun. We've no less days to sing God's praise...then when we've first begun.

Eternity has not time. The first day in eternity is forever. The first hour in eternity is forever. When we've been their ten thousand years...it will still be the first day of eternity.

So there you have it – the Twenty third Psalm. No wonder it is the most memorized, recited and known chapter in the whole bible.

I do believe that the 23rd Psalm has the power to heal those who are troubled and I also believe that it just might be a great help for those of us who are not so troubled

March 02 – Thou anointest my head with oil

Psalms 23:5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

"Anointest my head with oil" This reminds me of one of my favorite Psalm. Psalm 133:1 How wonderful it is, how pleasant, for God's people to live together in harmony! 2 It is like the precious anointing oil running down from Aaron's head and beard, down to the collar of his robes. 3 It is like the dew on Mount Hermon, falling on the hills of Zion. That is where the LORD has promised his blessing--- life that never ends.

When the Bible speaks of oil it speaks in reference to the Holy Spirit.

John14:26 speaks of the Holy Spirit – “whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you”.

Act 1:8 “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth”.

The Holy Spirit is both Teacher and Power, He is the Spirit, the Holy Spirit of God living in us enabling us to do and live the Christion life.

Psalms 23:5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

"My cup runneth over" Notice it does not say my cup is full but my cup runneth over. His belssings are so great and in so abundance that my cup won't hold them.

Not only is my cup full but its spilling out onto everyone around me.
Have you ever been around a person so full of Jesus that it was spilling out on everyone around them?

"Prepairest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies" Everyone knows that in the presence of your enemy is no place to sit down at the table to eat. Could it be that we can be so at rest in the care of the Good Shepherd that even in the presence of the enemy we can sit at God’s table.

Every time I read this I think about the table that is being prepared in Heaven for those who are in Christ Jesus. The wedding feast of the Lamb and the Church - A seven year banquet.

I have a picture at home of this banquet table that is prepared that seems to reach out into eternity. It says RSVP - I have already made my reservations I hope you have made yours.

March 29 – Thy rod and thy staff

Psalms 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

It says “I will fear no evil” and then it tells me why. It says “I will fear no evil” because “thy rod and thy staff they comfort me”. So let us look at the Shepherds “road and thy staff”.

The rod of the Shepherd was used to beat off wild animals and the staff was used to lift the sheep back to safety.

A rod is a symbol of Kingship. Kings used a golden rod to rule their kingdoms. King Jesus holds the golden rod of Kingship that rules the world. Philippians 2:10-11 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, 11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The good Shepherds staff is a picture of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit protects and guides his sheep into and in eternal life. Notice I said into and in eternal life. Fist the Holy Spirit guides us into eternal life by placing us under convection drawing us into salvation and then He guides us in eternal life as we live the Christion life. Into and in.

I would like for you to see one more thing and that is “thy rod and thy staff they comfort me”. We do know that the Holy Spirit is our comforter. John 14:26, But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

So Jesus is the Good Shepherd and the Holy Spirit is “thy Rod and thy Staff. The Good Shepherd Jesus guides us into the heavenly kingdom by “thy Rod and thy Staff” the Holy Spirit.

February 27 – Shadow of Death

Psalms 23:4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

"Shadow of death". Now a shadow is not the real thing it is the shadow of the real thing. So this is not speaking of death it is speaking of that thing that looks like death. That thing that looks like there is no way out.

There are many things that come into our lives that resemble death. Bad news from the doctor about yourself or a love one. Yea though I walk through this valley I will not be afraid. The Good Shepherd is with me in this valley.

Also we need to understand that a shadow is darkness. When a person or thing blocks out the light we have a shadow. A shadow is the absent of light

Jesus said, I am the light of the world: he that follows me shall not walk in darkness, - but shall have the light of life. (John 8:12)

The 23 Psalm has been used in more funerals than any other scripture. The Valley of Death, speaking of that moment in time when a loved one passes from this world into the world to come. Yes the Good Shepherd doses have the power to comfort us in this times 0f sorrow.

This is only one of many scriptures that give us assurance of peace as we enter into death. 1st Corinthians 15:55 - O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?

But the 23rd Psalm is not for the dead but for the living. "Yea though I walk though the valley” We have all spent time walking in the valley. I love the mountain top but it is in the valley that we find ourselves closest to the Shepherd.

February 25 – He leads me in the path of rightness

Psalms 23:3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

Aren’t you glad that Jesus leads us in the path of rightness? Not only does the Good Shepherd lead us in the path of rightness but he is our rightness. Everything we need for righteousness has been done for us by Jesus at the cross.

2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him (Jesus) to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him

Now the word rightness means being made right with God. Jesus has made us right with God by taking our place on the cross

February 24 – He restoreth my soul

Psalms 23:3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

The other week I went to an antique car show. These old cars had been restored. The old rusted parts had worn out and had been removed and replaced with new ones. These cars looked like they did when they first came from the factory.

"He restoreth my soul". This is what the Shepherd does for our soul. He restores it to what it was before sin tried to destroy it. He takes everything out that is not of God and replaces it with the Love of Jesus.

Just as if I had never sinned.

February 23 – He leadeth me beside the still water

I have and I am sure most of you have also been in waters that have been very troubled. This is not a very pleasant place to be but isn’t it great to know that in the midst of the troubled water and in the midst of the of the storm is where we find Jesus walking on the (troubled) waters.

Jesus is not the giver of troubled waters, Jesus is the giver of living water. Jesus said, whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. I believe this is the still water that the psalmist is speaking of.

“He leadeth me beside the still water the living water”

February 22 – He maketh me to lie down in green pastures

Psalms 23:2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

Verse 1 - tells me that I shall not want and it also tells me how these wants are going to be met. Now in verse 2 wee see that God provides rest, in both green pastures and still waters.

“He makes me lie down in green pastures”. All pastures are not green pastures. There is a lot of hardship in the world today but even in the midst of all these hardships we still have the assurance that the Shepherd is with us leading us into the green pastures. Most often we are so busy looking at what we don't have that we fail to see what we do have.

February 19 – The LORD is my shepherd

Psalm 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

Over and over in the Bible we are given the picture of God as the Good Shepherd.

Luke 15:4-7 We see God as the Good Shepherd having 100 sheep and one of them became lost. It shows the Good Shepherd leaving the 99 in search of the one.

John 10:11-14 We see the Good Shepherd who lays down his life for his sheep. It speaks of the hireling who flees when the danger comes. It is a comfort to know that in times of danger the Good Shepherd is with us.

John 27:28, Tells us, My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me and I give unto them eternal life and they shall never perish neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand

It says “The Lord is MY Shepherd” It did not say the Lord is a Shepherd. The word MY makes it personal. It is a personal relationship with Jesus.

Any time we look at a scripture the first thing we need do is see who the scripture is speaking to. The Lord is my Shepherd, it is speaking to me. A born again believer in the Lord Jesus Christ.

February 20 – I shall not want

Psalm 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

The Shepherd provides for his sheep. We not only trust Jesus for our salvation but also need to trust in Jesus for our daily needs.

The Lord’s Prayer says “give us this day our daily bread”. In Philippians 4:19 it says - My God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

So the Shepherd is my salvation but the Shepherd is also my provider

February 18 – 23rd Psalm

Psalm 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

I thought for the next few days we might look at the 23rd Psalm. The 23 Psalm is the most know, memorized, recited chapter in the Bible. Norman Vincent Peale often used the 23rd Psalm as a prescription for those that he was counseling. He told them to recite and meditate on the 23rd Psalm five times a day. The 23rd Psalm has the power to administer healing to those who are troubled.

You know this just might be the right prescription for all of us. To take into our spirit the 23rd Psalm five times a day. You know it just might render what our spirt needs and it might just render what our physical body also needs.

“The Lord is my Shephard I shall not want”. What a way to start the day but also what a way to live the day.

February 17 – Salvation comes by believing

Romans 5:21 That as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord.

Adams disobedience brought sin into the world. The Second Adam Jesus by His obedience brought redemption to the world. This was done by Jesus taking the sin of the world to the cross.

The sin of the world to the cross. Not just the sin of a few who might believe but the sin of the whole world. NOW WAIT DON’T GET ALL EXCITED LET ME EXPLANE.

Jesus took to the cross the sin of the whole world. Every sin in the world has been paid for on the cross by Jesus. The only sin that we deal with now is the sin of rejecting or not excepting the payment for sin that God has provided in the Lord Jesus Christ. The sin of condemnation comes by not believing in Jesus.

Salvation is there waiting for each and every person in the world completely paid for by the Lord Jesus Christ. The only thing a person need do to receive it. This is done by believing and accepting the Lord Jesus Christ.

The works to become a Christian is to BELIEVE OR FAITH IN THE LORD JESIS CHRIST and the works of the Christian is to BELIEVE OR FAITH IN THE LORD JESIS CHRIST.

Now how simple is that?

February 15 – For everything there is a season
Ecclesiastes 3:1 For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:
We all have change taking place in our lives. How do I know? Because I know that life is full of change.

When I was still working the company that I worked for would make these changes. Most often everyone would be upset because of the change. We use to have a saying, “just about the time I work myself up to a good mad about the change they change everything again”.

What we need to understand is that “everything has its season”. Jesus said in John 16:33, "These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." Our Lord made clear that we would have TRIBULATION in this world but we have the promise of God that THIS TOO SHALL PASS.

My momma used to say “everything is like a piece of string, it has a beginning and ending all we need do is to hang on”. Just remember that it is in the middle of the storm is where Jesus walks on the water.

February 13 – You never give a wrong answer quoting God’s Word.

John 1:19,23 19 And this is the record of John (John the Baptist), when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?
23 He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.

I recall once when I was doing a door to door witnessing for the Lord that at this one door I was asked “let me see your license allowing you to do this”. I recall handing the man my bible and telling him that this was my license.

John replies by quoting form Isaiah 40:3 The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

You never go wrong giving an answer by quieting from God’s Word.

February 12 – Who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit

Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Walking after the flesh is when you attempt to get your needs met by your own deeds or by your own actions. It’s trusting in yourself, your own abilities, your understanding and living solely on the basis of your earthly experience based on what you see, hear and touch.

Did you know that you can walk after the flesh in the pursuit of both good things and bad things? An example of this would be God’s law. Yes you are to live by God’s law but if you find yourself depending upon God’s law for your salvation you are depending upon yourself for your salvation. If I keep the law then I will be saved if I break the law I will be lost but no one can keep the law. “All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God(Romans 3:23). We are all breakers of the law the first time we sinned.

Being in Jesus brings salvation being in yourselves brings condemnation. So the answer is simple “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus”. It simply a matter of being in Christ Jesus.

February 11 – God wants the whole nickel worth.

Isaiah 29:13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honor me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:

God wants our all. I recall when I was a little boy my mom would give me a nickel. To a young boy a nickel was a lot of money about 70 years ago. In fact a nickel was a lot of money 70 years ago. A nickel would buy a coke or a candy bar. In fact the first job I worked paid 8 nickels an hour.

Getting back to my story, my mom would give me a nickel and I would take it to the corner store and spend, what seemed to be an hour looking at all the pennie candy. I would pick a pennie worth of this and a pennie worth of that but never did I ever spend the whole nickel on one think.

I think that is often the way we spend our Christion life. A pennie worth of Jesus and a pennie worth of the world but never the whole nickel worth of Jesus. Jesus wants our all, the whole nickel worth of us.

This verse speaks of giving God our words but not our heart.

God wants our all.

Isaiah 29:13 Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honor me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:

This verse is so easy to explain but very hard to look at. In just a few words it says “if you can’t walk the walk then don’t talk the talk. We honor God in what we say but our heart does not belong to Him.

We are to Love the Lord thy God with our all. Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. Matthew 22:37

February 9 – Those that wait upon the Lord

Isaiah 40:31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

Those that wait upon the Lord. We live in a microwave world. We want everything now. How does the old saying go “hurry up and wait”.

We have no time to wait. I had a pastor who once told me that the problem most of us have with our prayers not being answered is that we have no time to wait. We pray for a new pair of shoes and the next day we borrow money to purchase them.

This verse tell us that there is a reward in our waiting. It says those that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. I like that word renew it means to make new again. To have strength of a young man or a young woman. It goes on to say “they shall mount up with wings as eagles”. An eagle is the highest strongest flying bird in the sky. Then it say we will shall “run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint”.

But we must first learn to wait. In a microwave word a world of everything now we must learn to wait.

Wait upon the Lord also has another meaning. Wait comes from the Hebrew word meaning to terry but also means to trust in, to have faith in.

Isaiah 40:31 But they that wait upon (trust in, to have faith in) the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

You know I like that even better, to trust in, to have faith in the Lord.

February 8 – Blessing and Cursing

James 3:9-10 Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

Wow how terrifying is that “out of the same mouth coming blessing and cursing. I’m lost for words how could that be. How could a Christion one moment be speaking blessings and in another moment be speaking cursing’s.

I believe that most of the curses we speak are spoken in our idle words. I’ll never get this done. I’ll never get well. I’ll never be able to do this. I’ll never be smart enough to understand this. We speak these words and never realize we speak them.

We are told in Matthew 18:18 that the words we speak will be honored by heaven. Matthew 18:18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

The danger of speaking idle words Matthew 12:36, "But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment."

How does the little song go we sang as a child. “O be careful little eyes what you see - O be careful little ears what you hear - O be careful little tongue what you say - -

February 6 – Speaking to the mountain

Matthew 17:20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

It says “you will say to this mountain”. I do believe we need to speak to those things that have become mountain in our lives. But as we do this we need to be very careful that we don’t begin to believe that it is our words that move the mountain.

When I speak to the mountain I always speak to it in the name of Jesus. All the power that is in Jesus is in His name. The faith I need to move the mountain and the power I need to speak to the mountain is in the name of Jesus.

Jesus is in the mountain moving business.

February 3 – Faith in our Faith

Matthew 13:31-32 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

I could not understand why I was not seeing mountains being moved when I prayed. Those around me told me that I needed more faith - I need to believe God harder and trust in God more. So I tried to believe harder and trust God more but I still was not seeing the mountains being moved

So instead of asking my friends what I was doing wrong I decided to ask God. That’s what I should have done in the first place. So I prayed and ask God to show me what he meant when He spoke of mustard seed faith.

God opened this scripture for me. God spoke to my heart and told me that I was putting faith in my faith. What I needed to understand was that it’s not my faith that moves the mountains but who I put my faith in.

I was believing that if I had just a little more faith then the mountain would move what I needed to understand is that it is Jesus who moves the mountain. It’s about putting my mustard seed faith in Jesus believing that Jesus can and will move the mountain.

When we put our Faith in our Faith we are putting our Faith in ourselves. If I could just believe harder – If I could just pray harder – If I could just have more faith, I – I – I.

“I” just won’t get the job done – I will never be able to move the mountain. I need to put the “I” out of the way and put Jesus in its place and we will see all kinds of mountains moved.

Just a thought

February 2 – Mountains in our lives

Matthew 13:31-32 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you.

What are the mountains in our lives? Those things in our lives that keep us from seeing the blessing that God has placed around us. Have you ever noticed how mountains will block our vision? You can’t see around them and you can’t see over them.

Mountains could be a friend or a love one who is sick. It could be a family problem. It could be a problem at work or even a loss of a job. It could be a change that is taking place in our lived.

God has given us a way to remove these mountains. It tells us in this scripture that we are to have faith, not even a great deal of faith, a mustard seed faith and with this faith we are to speak to this mountain. “ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you”.

I didn’t say it Jesus did and who would know better than Jesus the power we have with one grain of mustard seed faith.

January 30 – Jesus must increase

John 3:30-31 He (Jesus) must increase, but I must decrease. 31 He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.

I heard it once said like this “I must decrease SO THAT Jesus can increase. The Jesus that lives in us must increase and the only way this can happen is if we decrease. I have seen people so full of the love of Jesus that you could see Jesus in them.

We have been called to point the world to Jesus. We do this by what we say but also by the way we live, in our actions toward others. Jesus said in John 13:35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

How does the old saying go “actions speak louder than words”. Had a pastor who once said “You can tell who a person is by what kind of fruit falls from their tree when it is shaken”. Has anyone shaken you lately and if so what kind of fruit fell from your tree?

Was it the fruit of the Spirit or was it - - -
