Hi Pat - I'm looking forward to hearing about your new Cardio KB class. KB is my absolute favorite exercise and I am lucky enough to do it 2 - 4x a week.

Hi Pat,

I'm Jen. It sounds like it's going to be a fun class! Let me know how it goes. I love kickboxing! But have not done a lot lately, I have 4 year old twins, so that keeps me busy. I am going to join a Krav Maga gym with a boxing program. I think the boxing would be fun.

Good luck, and don't be nervous, we all start as beginners. Just have FUN!!

Hi, My name is Pat. Tomorrow is my first real day of Cardio Kick Boxing. Why I say real is because I am actually going to the boxing gym. I will get to utilize boxing equipment instead of the free hand that I use at the gym... looking forward but a little nervous. I have arms... not jiggly so I thought this would be a little more help in reducing the size while getting use out of all the other perks of cardio kick boxing. Well that's just a little.. will be keeping tuned to this team.

Hi,
This is also under the intro section, but it looks like this is were the chat is.
I'm a stay at home mom of twins, 3 years old/ almost 4, but was a cop and solder. I was a womens self defence instructor, and army unarmed combat instructor. After having the kids, had preclampsia (spelling?)stopped working out, kept eating, made generally poor decisions and got up to 242 lbs, I started changing things about a year and a half ago and got down to 176, but then again came poor choices and I'm now at 200. I found this team and hope you can help me get back on track!! I'm also hoping to start Krav Maga soon.
Do any of you have experience or info on that style?

Keep fighting!
J

Becky, how has it been going lately? Have you been sticking with your new exercise and eating plans? I haven't heard much from you lately so I thought I would check with you and see how it is going. You can do it. Don't give up!

Just stumbled on this team. Perhaps just in time...I may ( don't know for sure ) be testing for my next Dan level in traditional karate within a week and a half. Hard to find the balance between teaching, practicing my Kata, and getting ready for my instructor to visit. Feeling a little stressed.....

Hi Terry - Welcome to the Team!
That Ringside Workout sounds awesome! I wish my gym had something like that. I take the KickBoxing class 2x a week, but I would do it everyday if it was offered.

I'm 47 and one of the oldest females - and also one of the best - in the class. I always leave that class feeling strong and powerful and confident. It just makes my endorphins sing !

hi everyone, my name is Terry and I'm new to the group.
I joined a new gym in October and became a big fan of their Ringside class. It is a combination of punching on a big, kicks and a combination of other moves such as lunges, squats and planks. Our instructors tries to mix it up and occasionally we use free weight as well.
It is an awesome class!!
I also enjoy the cardio kickboxing class, but Ringside is my favorite.
Interesting I didn't discover this great workout until I was 50. I'm the oldest female in class and I'm very proud of it.

I'm looking forward to sharing ideas and encouragement with all of you!

Becky, I finally dropped below the dreaded 200 pound mark this morning (199.5). 200 is a number I hope to never see for myself on the scale again, but unfortunately I probably will. Maybe I will not hit a plateau again and I won't see that number again.

I did it, now it's your turn!

I love my punching bag and I do 10-15 minutes a day plus I do circuit training and I use my treadmill and elliptical as well.I notice that when I hit that bag it receives a lot of stress.

Yeah let's put this into even more perspective of how quickly a guy can lose weight then a woman.

Me: I eat better then he does. Eat less in ratio to what we are both allowed. I do not snack like he does and neither do I drink the amount of caffienated soda he does.

I do cardio 3-5 a week; he walks around a bit on his lunch hour at a leisurely pace. My resting heart rate is 60 bpm; his is 80 bpm (which is far too fast even considering his height, build etc...) so cardio wise I can always beat him though I am obese and he is considered "in height/weight ratio".

Re: weights. We have been on the same program. I am eating better and more "clean" - in two weeks he loses 6 pounds, and has gone down a size in jeans. Meanwhile I have lost nothing.

Is life fair? No. But I am an endomorph woman, and he is an athletic tall slender male. Totally different metabolisms and genetic coding so comparing us is apples to oranges.... but when I get people who wonder why I don't lose, I'm like it is not because I am not working it - if I was taking it easy, he would not have lost.

But I can still beat him at racquetball...

ATP - hubby is kicking *ss - my *ass on this New Rules. We are lifting about the same amount in weight generally. Although he is a guy, he has never done any weight training and has already 'caught up' with my weaker women muscles which have been weight training for six months!

He had a tight fitting pair of jeans in the thigh and those are already hanging off his butt and legs. I can already tell that his shoulders are broader too. This is four weeks, 8 workouts into the Stage One of my New Rules book.

I would be hacked off about it but I am reaping the rewards so hey! emoticon

Working out with him though causes a rift in my schedule. He wants to meet at lunch, but I usually am not home at lunch and I'm at the horse barn (30 minutes away) so this week we started meeting at 4 and then he just doesn't return to work.

Welcome Sniper to the team!

I've not been doing as much kickboxing as I would like since I stopped going to my class last month (after I got injured had to take a break). I've got a list of kickboxing dvd's I'm interested in buying and I think that will be my goal on payday (Friday).

Hello everyone. Love the name of the group!
I've done some kickboxing on my own and have been looking around for some classes that fit my schedule. Nothing yet but I'm still looking.
Looking forward to learning a lot!

Your routine looks do-able. I actually do a lot of the same things you have listed. I'm not really sure why it works but maybe it is toning your muscles more which would create more of a calorie burn throughout the day.

That is so cool about your husband. I am glad he has joined you and is losing weight too. Maybe having him work out with you will be the motivation you need to keep going.

One thing that I will probably write in my blog further about is this New Rules for Lifting routine that I am using. The routine is REALLY not as hard as I was doing in terms of amount or reps with Jari Love.

todays routine

www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_tr
acker.asp
?id=LABYRINTH&dte=4%2F19%2F2010

The author claimes these are metabolizers that will jumpstart you - but I kinda rolled my eyes about that...

BUT... and this is a big BUT... I have been SO TIRED after starting this routine! Not really achey, muscle sore, but just drop down TIRED. And the last 2 weeks I've actually cut back my exercise.

So is this routine really a metabolizer like the author says or am I just tired from stress... or do I need more Vit. D? I just don't know.

In the past when I've gotten really tired like this, it usually means I UPPED my exercise routine and my body is adjusting, but I don't really feel like I'm hitting it that hard.

BTW Hubby has lost SIX POUNDS since starting this program with me. And he has significant muscle in the arms, neck, shoulders and his legs have slimmed (though not all that big a guy to begin with - he has a runner's tall slim build generally but put on a pot belly as he got over 40 and snacked too much).

Thanks yes, there are some things that are happening that is causing more stress in my life - nothing I can do about it but just deal with it - but when I reach a certain level of stress, I retreat in order to try to conserve my power to endure.

My plan this week -

*Get back to strength training 3x a week (last week I only got 2 sessions in);

*Get at least 3 elliptical sessions in.

*Get back to eating what I need for my body to feel good.

*4 sessions of recreational cardio exercise.

*Play with my horses

We are going to have rain 3 days straight this week which will be hard to keep me not getting gloomy!

Becky,

I understand. I could tell you had a very stressful week and you weren't on here much either. I am glad you are back and getting back on track.

My goals for the week are as follows, in no certain order:
1. Attend boot camp class Monday and Wednesday, which includes both cardio and strength training.
2. Do C25K training Monday and Wednesday.
2. Really watch what and how much I eat and do my best to stay within my ranges.
3. Drink at least 8 glasses of water every day and stay away from sweet tea and lemonade.
4. Attempt to run a 5K on Saturday.
5. Walk a 5K on Sunday.
6. Walk as much as possible on breaks.
7. I will probably try to do some strength training on Saturday also.

Hey ATP - I know you posted to my blog but though I would post here. Last week was just too much stuff having to be done and too many demands colliding with hormones. The thing to do is to get back on track though as fast as possible and just let it go.

Right now I have my strength done but I need to keep going and eat right. I figure I'll weigh next Monday and see where I'm at. Weighing this week would be just way too much stress.

Just a quick intro- I have been doing Kwok Wu Chuen for 2.5 years...it is a combo of Tae Kwon Do, Karate, and Kung Fu. I LOVE it and I'm currently a brown belt, for our system that is number 7 out of 10. My school does also offer a form of kickboxing we call "Combat Cardio"...It is like kickboxing but a little more technical as far as the form of the kicks and punches they use. I pretty much stick with the martial arts class though.

No it will not be a regular thing. They do kickboxing stuff every once in a while just for something different.

The Y actually offers a kickboxing class but it is at times that I can normally go, like Saturday mornings. I usually travel on the weekends so I can't go on a regular basis. I do hope to go tomorrow though! I can't wait.

I love kickboxing too, I just don't get to do it enough.

This is a great place to put it as it's just a check-in thread, meet and greet, ask for support, etc...

Is this going to be a regular thing now in the Bootcamp class you think? I LOVE kickboxing!!

Not really a question, just a comment but I wasn't sure where to share it.

I got to do some kickboxing moves last night during our boot camp class. It was great! It is always so much fun to get to kick or hit the bag. I hope to get to attend the kickboxing class Saturday morning and get in a good kickboxing workout to start my morning. I can't wait!

Oxygen magazine in their latest issue has an article about protein. It wasn't real new info though to me.

I did get by the grocery store today and I can see why Ricotta cheese and yogurt is so recommended. Protein out the WAZOO!! I think I might see about Greek Yogurt in my protein shake and I do like Ricotta cheese in limited amounts (though I do not like cottage cheese, plain yogurt, or tuna!).

I understand the protein issue. I am almost always low on protein too. I don't like a lot of the foods that are good sources of protein either so I am kind of screwed like you are. I have been drinking protein shakes the last few weeks about twice a week and I think is is helping with soreness as well as weight lose. I am going to keep it up for a while and see if I keep getting good results. If not, then I will make other adjustments.

All - I really have an issue with getting enough protein. Now that I've read the New Rules for Lifting, and Tom Venuto's e-book, I've been not eating enough. The week I really focused on the protein, I gained muscle like overnight!

I don't like tuna so I'm kinda screwed on that favorite fast way people have. Today, I've had an egg/egg white scramble, with Trout for lunch, and the Protein shake and I'm STILL under the protein I would need for a workout day! emoticon

Because I keep my calories down to lose weight, I usually only allow 4 ounces of protein for dinner so I am thinking today I'll up to 6 and see if I'm okay there.

Kinda keep working those numbers!

On the ipod, I know for my MP3, those videos just ate up way too much space (but it's an older model). For it you can go buy a memory card and put in larger memory but even so videos are just space eaters!

Becky,

It looks like your day is going well so far. Protein shakes are great aren't they for getting in that extra Protein or for when you are short on time and need that extra kick! I drink them once in a while when I don't have time to eat after a workout but I need the Protein to start repairing my muscles. It seems to be working.

Anyway, that's another subject. Right now I don't have any room on my ipod but I just realized that a day or so ago. So when I get that taken care of I may try to download the SP routines. That is a great idea and I didn't even think about it. If I try to download them and have any problems I will let you know and maybe together we can figure it out. Hopefully, I won't have any problems though.

Hi another Spark member told me about the team. I fell in love with kickboxing last year with just the Sparks 10 minute workouts. I have bought a few videos to do at home and love it. I try to kickbox 3 times per week and I have found it to be a great stress release for a lunch time workout. emoticon

Hey if you have an ipod with enough memory you can download the Spark workouts to it. I posted in this blog entry about how to do it
www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_jo
ur
nal_individual.asp?blog_id=1497868

These directions are for a MP3 player but they should be similar. If it doesn't work, give me a bit of time to research and I'll figure it out on for your ipod.

Becky,

Thanks. Those are great ideas. I don't have a computer at home either. I do have an ipod touch though so maybe I can find some kickboxing stuff to download to my ipod. That would be awesome!

As far as strength training goes I am doing what you suggested. We do squats, ab work, and push-ups all the time in boot camp class. I also do squats and ab work on my own and some strength training on my own. I am still working on getting better at push-ups. I have an extremely difficult time with push-ups no matter what form I try. I will keep doing them though because I am determined to be able to do regular push-ups with no problem.

Thanks again for the info.

Hey ATPossible...

Hm if you don't have access to a dvd player do you have access to a home computer? On the Kick and Punch threads there are a lot of links to videos there on Youtube you could use to increase your practice.

For me personally, it's best to concentrate on form first - so you could use the online videos to better your form or to learn sequences.

Oh, and I've been playing my workout dvds on my computer because I don't have a television in my workout room.

With a home program for kickboxers, I would start incorporating some lower body strength training such as squats. This definitely will build up your length strength and ability to balance on one leg.

I've also found pushups and ab work - especially anything that will work your core very helpful.

Hope this ideas can help you out! emoticon

I have taken a kick boxing class a few times and I absolutely loved it. However, I don't get to attend class very often because it is offered at times that I can not go. We do some kick boxing moves in boot camp class once in a while but not very often.

About the only option I have is to do shadowboxing type moves (doing the moves without hitting anything). If I incorporate the moves I have learned into my workout routine will I get the same results as I would if I were actually hitting something? I don't have a DVD player so I can't do DVD workouts at home.

Anybody have any other ideas or suggestions so I can keep up with what I have learned and maybe learn some new moves? Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ann - one thing I noticed with Turbo Jam class I took is that to up the cardio they would do a sequence of punches, then jack; then several kicks and then jack. They add it throughout to get that heart going!

BTW member Phoenix is going to be posting about Cathe's MMA dvds' so hopefully you guys can give me some feedback there!

Right now I'm going to box the bag everyday this week and I can tell it's improving my mood. I was soooo cranky yesterday and afterwards felt much better... as I'm sure everyone around me did too.

FANTASTIC Ann! I'm glad the new name drew someone in ... heehee

Yes, let's channel our inner warriors! I love the great stress reliever that boxing and kickboxing provides especially for a Type A person like I am.

I also have a bag at home and I'll be starting a Punching Bag challenge within the next few days. Be sure to check out the equipment thread and the links - very informative and packed with info.

Yeah when I can do 20 minutes jumping rope and can drop and do 100 pushups (working on it) I'm going to stroll into a gym and show them what for...!!

Just some team housekeeping I'm taking care of...

1.) Changed the team's name. I hope this attracts a wider group of athletes.

2.) We were not listed in the team directories so that is now taken care of. We are under FITNESS AND WORKOUTS: GYM WORKOUTS and TONING YOUR BODY.

If you would prefer a different catagory let me know.

3.) Changed the team image. Hope you like it! If you have one you would like better, email me how I can view it and we may pick it!

4.) Short welcome message that newbies get. I'll be making a better one when I find more to say.

I'll also be adding team links to articles at Spark that might be of interest to those who are training and working out.

Thanks so much team! Let's Kick up some Action!

Hey Inner Warriors! I wanted to welcome you to the team and have this thread as a basic Q&A about the team, what is about, and how to participate in the team's goals etc...

First, I was appointed the new leader in Feb. 2010 as the old leader had stopped posting. LHLHLFPINT served as leader for awhile and may be coming back as co- but right now she has some health issues she needs to concentrate on.

So I've got some ideas and things I want to try out there, with the teams' permission, and if you have ideas on what you want the team to be doing etc... please post it right here.

I would like to get a co-leader with experience in Martial Arts (I have none) so if this is you and you would like to step up and become a co-leader powerhouse just email me!

My vision for this team - we are open to kickboxers but we aren't stopping there!

Martial Arts, Turbo Jammers, Tae Bo fanatics, and Boxers, can all join us!
