I've had back issues for years too but thankfully haven't had any issues for a while. I have degenerative disc disease with some arthritis thrown in just for the fun of it. I'm like you Terri - I sit a lot at work and am going to start putting a timer or something on my computer to make myself get up at least once per hour.

You poor thing - but what a great attitude. You are right, everyone has something. My son (youngest - 23) has slight scoliosis and he loves lifting weights but notices that he can easily hurt himself on his deadlifts. I've recommended he go to physical therapy and maybe have them show him some proper modifications but he hasn't done it yet (busy with college and all).

Glad you are mostly well and have such an amazing - no quit -gonna push through-attitude!

Not WELL-well, but mostly-well.
I'll take it ....

I can always throw on the back-brace if I need to for a workout.
Whatever it takes - I just want to get better.
My physician said that I MUST MOVE...
It has been decades since I had back pain that was debilitating.
I have chronic back pain all the time - from the scoliosis (s-curve) which for me is right shoulder down - right hip up. It is a constant modifying of my posture - I have to literally touch my hip or shoulder to be able to physically move it into proper alignment - rather than what it wants to do which is to 'sink' into itself in that infamous S shape, as opposed to a health | alignment.
I am confident that returning to shorter work days (5d/wk) will be the key to help me return to optimal-for-me health.

Everybody has something - it's learning to live with and overcome what we can that is where the focus needs to be....not in the areas of the obstacle , but of the VICTORY over it ~~~

Better.....still tender.
I am only able to do house/yard work from the standing position.
Bending is nearly impossible.
BUT, I am stretching daily and hoping that I am able to start 'well' on Aug 2.
If not - I will be doing the workouts with super light weights until I am all better.

Oh no i hope your back pain goes away soon. The challenge is almost around the corner. I used to have the worst back and neck pain for years after the car accident (someone rear ended us at a stop light). With that weight gain followed and lack of motivation. I have occasional neck/back pain but no where near what it used to be. So very thankful to be able to get back in to shape and feel no pain.

Hope you recover soon.

Did STS Plyo Legs today.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Sumith.

I have a very sore lower right lat today.
Barely able to move.
I've been working a lot (desk job) and then spent most of the day Wednesday in the garden.
Yesterday my back was a little ouchie, by the end of my work day (at desk) I could barely move. I'll be going to the chiropractic this morning and then back to work.
Today, I will be getting up way more than I did yesterday, and that was frequently.
I haven't had back pain like this in almost 40 years.
Pain, Pain, GO AWAY ~

Lots of stretching and resting on the agenda for tomorrow.

Still plugging away with STS but today was my insanity cardio day. Those workouts really kick my okole. Trying to get this rotation done before the next challenge. It feels good to be back in decent shape again and didn't feel like a fatty during my birthday last week on the 11th. I've been working out hard for the past 4 months. Can't wait to see what my body will look by the end of the year if i keep this pace up. Hope you all are having a great day.. Gotta go do some gardening. Peace!

I am still sore in my left hamstring and left IT band from my butts & guts the other day (that is my weaker side due to a knee injury/surgery a couple years ago). I may have to foam roll prior to doing the Yoga Max this morning. Ouch. Ha ha

I did Gym Style Back Shoulders Biceps this morning. I've been trying the Gym Style since it seems to be pretty close to the style of STS. I want to be Amazonian too but I'm built more like a block, 5'6" with a lot of sand in the lower part of in my hourglass figure. Ha ha! I've been trying to do 6 (3 ST and 3 Cardios) per week and allowing myself only 5 if that works but I've been able to pretty much keep to the 6, I'm adding in Yoga tomorrow as my "rest day."

Cardio and leg conditioning this am.
TBS on for this evening.
I'm ready for more cardio (3x/wk in STS)

Next time I do Body Beast I will definitely add some more cardio...limiting it to 20min every other day after the ST ... gives total energy for the lifting while finishing the muscles off...
sort of like a polish.

I have my STS syllabus almost complete.
I found lots of great articles by Cathe...unfortunately, some seem to contradict others...so I am choosing the ones that support the general consensus in bodybuilding.
The studies change with the profits in every field especially nutrition - big money feeds nutrition 'studies')
...which is very sad.
I'm sticking mainly with Cathe's old-school articles; the ones when she was very muscular. I like that look better for me. I'm tall, and tall looks better with muscles.
Thinking Amazon ... not Gargantuan.

Such good advice. Thanks! I'm freezing grapes for a snack this afternoon when I need it. Love the visual. I'm the same - I love my muscles that I'm building. Yesterday after Gym Style Chest/Triceps I was admiring my upper chest muscles in the mirror before my shower. You'd think I was a 17 year old boy and not a 52 year old woman. LOL!

Sumith2008 ~ Meso2 is my favorite - just the right amount of weight - just the right amount of speed.

Laura ~ when I get like that I eat more fruit. It really helps me to keep my glucose levels stable and slow down the overindulgence. I bought dried pineapple and organic dark chocolate at the store yesterday. Not a habitual purchase - but something nice for occasions when I am working outside more and need more calories.
The way I eat and workout - one would think I was slim.
I am not - BUT, I am working toward that and as my muscle mass increases I am getting squishier as the body fat is consumed by these returning lovely muscles.
I LOVE MUSCLE MASS ~

That sounds great Sumith2008. Is that upper or lower? Love my Cathe workouts!!

Only problem I've been having last four-five days is my eating. It has gotten out of control. I notice that I get a little anxious about work and such before we leave on vacation and everything seems to go out the window with the exception of my workouts. Makes me so frustrated.

Not overkill..... all questions are important ~

I don't do every single one as I am already using worksheets with my workouts and know pretty much how much I can lift from current experience. So I just enter those figures.
On exercises that I don't do frequently - I am retesting for this upcoming challenge.

I opened the STS CHALLENGE THREAD..... I suggest we move these questions to that thread so that participants can have everything in one place.

Okay another question re 1rep max. Did you do yours all in a few days as a workout? So I wouldn't do my 1RM on the same day that I already did say Gym Style ..., right? Because then would that muscle be fatigued and I wouldn't get a good reading. Again, I tend to overcomplicate things so I apologize if this is overkill. Ha ha! Thanks!

1RM can be easily calculated by going to the Cathe Nation Workout Manager
cathe.com/workout/

Step ! ~ select STS in the drop-down box
select a disc from the drop-down box
Step 2 ~ select an exercise - the video will appear to show that particular exercise.
Choose a weight - doesn't have to be super heavy just choose one that you know you can manage the exercise.
DO THE EXERCISE - with the best form - do as many as you are able maintaining good form
WRITE IT DOWN in the next field.
Hit CALCULATE and the program will give you your 1RM

The worksheets give percentage of 1RM for each exercise throughout the challenge.

The window box on the right will record your calculations.
This can be printed for future reference.

I have a 'percentage' chart that I use. I will make sure it is uploaded to FB.
If anyone wants it and is not on the FB Challenge group - sparkmail me with your email and I will send it out.

Hope this helps.

I figured out my 1 rep max by using the workout worksheets. Doing each individual exercise and trying to max the weight to the point i can still keep my form perfect. If I'm curving my back or swinging then i reduce the weight till i find a challenging 1 rep with good form even if i could go heavier.

Did Plyo Legs Meso 3 today. Looks like i will be able to join the challenge in august.

Today's tomato harvest. This is after clearing out 3 tomato tables. Managed to fill up the table again haha. Still plenty of tomatoes on the plants..

Questions re testing for 1REP MAX - do you stand there and just test a few moves at a time and record on your worksheet? Or do you do a workout where there is only one series of a move - like in Push/Pull she just does one set of say, bicep curls - so, do you do a workout and then write down your 1RM? I have a tendency to over complicate things but I was just wondering how you did your 1RMs. Ha ha

Larua1 - did you add yourself to the STS CHALLENGE EVENT?
You can find that in the right hand column on the FB page ..... or under the EVENT tab.
It is just the easiest way for me to share the downloadable forms that I have without having to email each person as I have done in the past - working 10-12hr/day makes that nearly impossible.

Join the EVENT and I will add you to the message.

Laura2 - GOT YA.....
if you download the cards now you can get started so you are ready when you return.
It's gonna be GRAND.

I will be posting some in both places for those who are not on FB.
Besides - emoticon

Mesocycle #2 is my favorite - heavier weights and moderate breaks.
Love them all, but M2 is my favorite.

I have individual weights so just go up using either wrist weights or just go up to the next pair ... I have dumbbell pairs at: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10,12, 15, 17(plates), 20, 25, 30, 35#.....
and .5 to 2.5# sand bag increments that slip into my workout gloves. I'm good with that.
Things go pretty smoothly as the Mesocycles progress.
Have you trialed any of the M1 workouts?
Test runs are always nice. :)

Are you guys on FB?
I set up the STS Challenge Event on The Cathe Friedrich Workout Group (closed group)
You can join and see the posts, but no one outside the group can see it.
If you wish to be included on there - sparkmail me and I will send you the group link.
It's just easier for me to send out the worksheets and other 'tools' on FB as the files can be uploaded and then used by each participant (as you choose)

I will be working on my syllabus tomorrow and the next 4wks.
Definitely looking forward to it.

I've been watching the STS instructional info on Youtube -Cathe TV. Very informative and a little intimidating. I have the Selectech weights which go from 5 - 25 pounds in small increments and am concerned that I won't have enough time to switch my weights quickly enough making the workout that much longer. Thoughts anyone?

Yeah my daughter has been doing STS & Insanity with me since we started. And I'm sure my little one will have guns and abs to show before i do lol! But we motivate each other and get through the workouts together. We do the high fives and take sweaty breaks together on the floor when we are totally wiped out. All good fun. I took a rest day today. Probably going to do STS abs circuit 3 today.

Hope you all are getting pumped to start STS.

Thanks ladies!! I seemed to lose inches when I did Jillian Michael's body revolution a couple years ago but I just love lifting heavier weights. I may just do it though for the month of July to get ready for STS. Thanks again for your input!!

I am unable to do circuits back to back for more than one rotation (4wks/1rest wk)
I lose too much muscle mass.

That is what I am currently rebuilding from....I started doing mostly circuit training when the new workout craze hit a few years back - thinking that I would super boost fat loss.
Well, my body does not respond in that way and I lost muscle mass.
So - this year has been old-school gym style workouts 4wks work / 1wk Active rest.
~10wks ago I began increasing my calories to my current level of 2100-2500kc/d depending on my schedule ... and am FINALLY building muscles again.
Those lovely muscles are burning up my body fat -
I have know idea how much I weigh - not getting on the scale until 2016...we are officially divorced....BUT, my clothes are much looser and even my shoes are too big.
It's all good for me.
I have decided that for 2016 (for me) I will be doing one heavy gym style rotation alternated by one rotation of circuit style. I am hoping that when I reach my ideal body weight range I will respond better to the circuits. For now - I'm sticking with what is working for muscle building. If I'm gonna be big - I'm gonna be AMAZON ... :)
emoticon
But, that's just me.

PS: I have noticed that Cathe doesn't have the muscle mass that she used to have when she did heavier lifting.
As we age - our bodies can change - but I see body builders that continue to lift heavy and maintain their muscle mass well into their 70's. Many that I've seen online are even Vegan (as am I) so they are not pumping themselves full of super-protein and protein supplements)
I just want to get as strong as I can and maintain that for as long as I can....without starving.

I have a question - what do you think about doing circuit training every day? I was looking over all of my Cathe DVDs and notice that most of them are circuit type training (Super Cuts, Flextrain, etc.) and was thinking that next month I may do that instead of the standard lifting as a precursor to STS (plus we will be gone for a week in July without a DVD available so I may have to just to circuit bodyweight exercises). Any thoughts or suggestions?

Yeah this is my first round so it was more of a test run to get a feel for the workout. I taking am notes on my worksheets and will follow the rest of you once i complete Meso 3. I have been doing Insanity Max 30 (which is 30 min cardio workouts) on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. I've only lost 3 lbs since i started but I can see pretty good muscle gains for the time I've done this program. I would be more concerned if i started dropping weight to fast then I'd suspect I'm losing muscle mass. Round 2 STS i plan to really bring it. I will have better workout notes to start the program and can't wait to get another round in.

I pre - set my weights before i start the workout to minimize any downtime or take to many long breaks which i noticed i was doing on meso 1 trying to figure out what weights to use. So figure out your 1 rep max's play around with the exercises and make sure you can do solid 12 reps with good resistance.

We should setup a STS group on fb. So we can help each other stay motivated.

Okay -got it. I actually have a yoga mat I never use since I purchased a better one a couple of years ago. That's a good idea, I will cut it to size. I guess I could paint my own "Cathe" on it. LOL

I have the step mat.
It's wonderful.
You can use a yoga-mat and cut to size.
Pilates mats are generally thicker.
It just won't have CATHE on it.....
The step can be 'ridgy' on your back if you have bare spot tops.

So I previewed STS 1A (?) workout last night - yes on a Saturday night - ha ha; question: I see Cathe uses a mini mat for her step when she is laying on the bench. Seems like a nice addition but they no longer have them in stock on cathe.com. Probably not really necessary, right? I've been doing the Gym Style series for a while without it. Do any of you have that and does it make a HUGE difference? Can't seem to find it on amazon anyway, so I don't know why I'm worrying about it. LOL

Thanks!

I did Cathe Super Cuts today and no I haven't ordered them yet. I was looking around Amazon now that you gave me the link and seeing if there were any other deals with the DVD. The one link only had the slant risers but for that price, that's what I'd expect.

Thanks again

Dee ~ did you get a workout DVD with it as well?
Back in the day, Leslie Sansone had a workout that utilized a slanted step.
Slim, Shape & Sculpt (or something like that)
It inspired me to get the slanted risers.

Funny how many different 'equipment' workouts there were that required one to make an additional purchase. I'm glad I figured it out years ago and now only have what I need (for me)

You're welcome. Let us know if you get them.

This morning was STRETCH MAX - with the band.
Nice workout.
Looking forward to a week of reviving .... and planning for the STS CHALLENGE.

I will be making available worksheets and personal tools that I use during challenges.
Not as directives, just for sharing.
As with everything I do - take what you like and leave the rest.

That being said - I am unable to share them here on SP because they don't have add file feature here on SP.....so, be thinking about whether you want to connect with me on FB and/or give me your email address.
We won't be posting them online because this is a PUBLIC team....
But, just begin thinking about it and I will send out a team sparkmail the first week of July.

Most of the tools that I use are mine - so you will have to make the changes you need to utilize them for yourselves. They are word documents.

Happy Day to all ~

I have them and use them all the time.
Together, they enable the high step to be much higher as well.

I got mine on Amazon:

www.amazon.com/Slanted-Step-Risers-A

Even with shipping they are pretty inexpensive.

Mine came with this DVD: lots of fun...
www.amazon.com/SPRI-Slanted-Riser-Wo

You can also just take a few risers off one side, but it doesn't feel as secure.
