I agree that 10 miles is a bit much. My group is doing 5 miles with an option for 3 miles.

I've been working the foam roller hard this week.

Dee maybe start off with the group and split off early to make it a shorter run so you don't push it too much??? Good luck with your run tomorrow.

Morning, y'all!
I tackled that foam roller last night - I had a moment of panic when I left work and could hardly walk. Well, it seems to have helped as I'm walking quite well this morning.
I'm even considering running with my group in the morning, although 10 miles is more than I really want to do.

Just keep moving -- that's the key thing. It will keep the muscles more limber and also help keep the nervous system from shutting down.

I think I'll walk for now - I really am injured at this point, and I'm leaving on vacation on Sunday. I don't want to mess that up, since I'll do a lot of walking during the next two weeks. Thanks, Catherine.

What a great plan! I had been afraid that all the training at 13:30 all summer would mean I'd never go faster than that, but Sunday's marathon proved otherwise. Good luck to you with ecoaching. I may consider it in the future.

I recently signed up for ecoaching. I had about 6 months until I wanted to run the St. Louis full marathon.

He did adjust my marathon schedule for me. I've got a really sold 15 mile distance, so I'm working from there and moving up more slowly than the standard plan.

You report what you did on Tue-Wed of each week. He has gotten back by the next day, so far. You can email additional questions. I did get the okay to do 7 unstead of the scheduled 5 on a recovery week.

Part of the reason I did it was so I would not be sucked away from doing a Marathon and training the Jeff Galloway by family stuff. I'm counting on Jeff Galloway giving me a fit if I do a training run too fast with my dh. I did on 15 mile training run with my dh at something like a 11:30 min/mile pace on a hot humid day no less. Above 85 at 5 am. This was back in Aug before my half. I think my training suffered for a whole month. I found myself apoligizing for slowing down at the end. Well now I've paid money for someone to say--train at 13:30 min/mile or slower, if it's hot.

Hopefully if I have any issues his advice will help.

Hi Team!

Just wondering...
....has anyone used Jeff Galloway's 6 month e-coaching? If yes, what are your thoughts?

Taking it easy today...
I am so glad I switched to this method of running. This body feels good and recovers from runs quickly. So far so good!!!

I am going to enjoy this thread..thanks for starting it!

It's actually good to start running again right away. Not far or fast, of course. But running slowly increases blood flood and speeds recovery. I ran on Tuesday and will run again today.

If you are injured, then you have to adjust for that. But if it is "just" a question of tired muscles and general soreness, then I'd say try a short run.

Doing a lot of walking helps too.

I'm just at the point where I can walk normally without limping after Sunday's marathon; a massage really helped the ITB pain. At what point should I resume running?

Well today was the first day running after Sunday's race and I was sloooooow. Man I felt like my legs were in mud. I did 43:00 using a :30/:30. The good thing about going so slow, my heart rate stayed in the lower, normally it skyrockets. :)

Gosh those arm warmers are tempting. I have a bad elbow that gets worse with the cold weather. However I must confess to doing googling and discovered I could get Smartwool arm warmer.

Drove my Garmin to UPS today. My battery is only lasting 2 hours when the temp is 32. It seems a bit better on warmer days. I hope to get it back soon. Luckily Olathe, Kansas is not that far away---it is being delivered to them tomorrow. Garmin said 10 days after they recieved it, but my first Garmin only lasted a week and they said the same thing and I got it within a week from my mailing.

I just want to mention a product I heard about on one of the emails I get from SparkPeople - maybe Coach Nancy?? Anyway, it was recommending arm warmers - the link she gave was for Asics - style RN803. I figured it was worth $8.95 to check them out (the link was from Running Warehouse - no shipping - gotta love that!) and ordered two pair.

They are GREAT - perfect for days like today that are too warm for long sleeves but too cool for short sleeves. I wore them until I got warm, folded them down over my forearms for a while, then took them off (just tucked them through the belt of my fanny pack). These would be great for a race too - to keep you warm while you are waiting for the race to begin. So in case you saw the email but weren't sure it was worth the trouble, this is a second plug!! I seem to be recovering quickly from Sunday's race. That was my number one goal, so I am pleased. My feet feel great, in fact, they felt fine almost as soon as I took off my running shoes and put my Vibrams back on. I think I have figured out what caused the arch pains during the race. I'm going to blog about it when I have time later today.

I have a ST session with my trainer this morning and then I'm going to do a short recovery run.

We sure had a lot of team members running last weekend.

I did 5 miles today close to home, which generally means hilly. Hopefully I'll get some crosstraining in tomorrow, although I've not been doing really well with that. Then on Friday I've got 16 miles on my training plan. I have to decide if I'm doing it from my house which mean hills, or driving for a flat run. I'm not to concerned about the uphills, its the downhills that get to my knees. Oh and it will be a no Garmin run, wonder how I'll do on pace, I'm suppose to go 13:30 mile/mile. I won't know how I did until I get home.

Overall, the best thing to do is anything that helps you relax. Tensing up can cause all sorts of (minor) irritations. And most of us hold a lot of tension in our bodies all the time.

With that in mind, in addition to the tennis ball, etc., I'd also recommend some slow, deep breathing.

I'm off to San Antonio in about an hour. Have a great race! My goals this time all have to do with form.

Dawn, I sure hope you work this back thing out before your race. Still keep in mind that the real benefit of all that training is how much fitter you are (other than annoying back thing) than before you started training.

I was listening to the extra mile podecast experiment episoide 9. The experiment was Galloway's run/walk method for running a marathoh. Well when Kevin, the podcaster, finally ran his marathon, Chicago this Oct--hot. It did not go as expected. It's funny, I've read lots of sucess stories, but this one made me feel better about actually signing up for a marathon.

You get to hear Jeff Gallowy himself. He says something like, lots of things keep us running our best on any particular day.

OK, if it is upper back, try a tennis ball or softball -- lean back against a wall with the ball in the tender spot. It's sort of like the foam roller but more pin pointed. Depending on how tender the area is, you can try the same thing lying on the floor. I had a similar problem before my first marathon, and this was my trainer's recommendation. It worked well enough to enable me to run without a lot of discomfort.

It's in my upper back, more toward the left side, it even hurts when I take a deep breath. I'm trying heat now, earlier I iced it. UGH

Well now I'm getting worried, Wednesday I woke up with a tweak in my back, yesterday it was a little worse where it hurt to twist my body, today it hurts to walk!! I have no clue what I did, since it's getting worse I'm really concerned what it will be like on Sunday. Any suggestions on things I can do? I've taken ibuprofen and tried using the foam roller.

San Antonio is doing a wave start with lots of corrals. That should help with crowding at the beginning.

You are better off in a long race starting your intervals from the very beginning because that's when walking does you the most good -- while you are fresh. You can't get the freshness in your legs back, once it is gone.

But I have also done what Cindy did at the beginning of a 10K which was extremely crowded. Since it was a much shorter race, skipping walk breaks didn't cause problems for me.

You are suppose to start your interval right away. This is hard in a big crowded race. I have started my intervals at the beginning for most of my races.

This last time I decided ahead of time not to walk until after the first mile. However I also knew that if I was not taking walk breaks for that mile my running pace would have to slow down. So I made sure I started really slow---running slightly slower than my target average pace for run/walk. This went okay in a race where people were pretty packed together for the first mile.

I be careful in the excitment of the start. Have a plan and stick to it, or you'll regret it at mile 10.

Yes I thought we started our intervals right out of the gate so if you were doing a 1:00/:30, you would immediately start walking after a minute of starting the race....isn't that right? Maybe I misunderstood.

Ran the final time today before Sunday's race. Still a little unsure about the race, being the first 1/2, first time using the Galloway (will seem odd walking right away), possible rain chances, sleeping in a hotel, going to another location where I haven't run on the course at all...so many things going through my head. It will actually be nice to just get there and do it so I know what it will be like. lol

TENISWHIZ - I have had periformas issues for years, definitely not fun. Hopefully yours doesn't bother you too much and affect your running.

Today was fabulous! The weather has been so nice ~ had to take my jacket off mid run today, and dh wore shorts ~ last week was winter running pants, headband and mittens! I think fibroids is affecting my overall running. Did 2/1 but did not break any records that for sure! I have about a 3-4lb gain... just how much does a softball sized fibroid weigh I wonder????
I think running is keeping me sane! (debatable)
Ninjalinda ~ way to go on biking! I know it can be quite painful!

I'm stretching, and using a splint (when I remember) for the PF. Other than that, I'm just staying off of it as much as possible and NO running. The bike causes me no issues, though, so that's good.

Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there.

I checked out the San Antonio race info yesterday and found a video from a car driving the race route. Boy, is that a flat route! Maybe it's a good thing that most of my running has been on the flat track in the gym (except for long runs.) I've been a little bummed at not being able to get back outside much this fall to run the hills.

Not much running for me this week. Did 1.5 on the treadmill Monday, 3 hour dance session on Tuesday, on the road yesterday, and have a massage scheduled for this evening.
Since I got the cortisone shot in my right knee Tuesday, I decided to just let it work its magic and not overdo. I'll focus on ST and stretching during the week, and then it's marathon (or half) on Sunday.
No, I'm not prepared, at least not the way I'd planned to be, but one has to factor in injuries.

Injuries are so hard and trying on your patience. Hope everyone gets better soon.

Had a real good run/walk this morning. I did 5 hilly miles with a 1/:30 ratio and an average time of 10:50. That felt really good given all the hills.

It's been a long day. Almost forgot I'd run this morning and was ready to take a 7:30 long walk with the dog to get some exercise in. Then I realized I'd run in the morning. It seemed so long ago---hardly like the same day. Poor dog, he just got 25 minutes so I could finish the dishes and take the trash out.

I'm so sorry to hear about that plantar fasciitis! I know that can be a bear. What sort of treatment are you using?

I am, unfortunately, not running at all right now. Trying to get my foot to recover from plantar fasciitis. I am doing a LOT of biking and strength training though! Hoping to get back to running real soon - maybe by the first of the year...

My training session today was spent with the foam roller on my calves, quads, and IT band and a medicine ball to roll my hips and glutes. It's surprising how much more effective it is when done under my trainer's supervision. The work on my IT bands actually raised a sweat! I did a quick run after the session and my stride felt much looser and more relaxed. I'm finally starting to feel more my old self. I'm really curious to find out how I will feel on Sunday for the San Antonio Marathon. My plan is still to do it as a training run. Now that the weather is predicted to be a little cooler, I may try a fast training run.

Not running much to recover injuring my pirfirmoris muscle (sits behind glute). 3-6 miles a week, but hoping to build it back up soon! Seeing a chiropractor...working, but slow...You know how soft tissue injuries are SLOW!

I miss my long runs!

My hubby is doing c25k and is in week 3. Tonight I was able to finally go out and run it with him so i could check his form and pacing. After advising him with a few changes he felt more relaxed while running and not as easily gassed. It was alot of fun being with some one running even if it was ALOT slower than my pacing. He'll get there.

I'm having a rest day today. I was trying Zumba, but I found myself thinking, I really hate this last week and decided I did not need to go. Too dark to do much now. I'll do 5 miles tomorrow.

I am recovering from an awesome half marathon on Sunday. I ran it with my youngest daughter and it was a blast. It was my second. I had thought I wouldn't do any more but the energy was so awesome, I can't help it. I've got to keep on running.
