It is points for the month of June. That particular number resets to zero each month. For example: I have around 875 points for June, but overall SP points are 4,036.

If you look at the top right hand side of your screen, there is a link called "View SparkPoints." Click it and it will show you how to get Sparkpoints. There are many different ways to get points.

Just a question about the top ten guys that scroll at the top of this group's homepage...are those 1.) points total SP points overall, 2.) for the month of June for overall SP points, 3.) total points on the message board 'Men, You're Not Alone' (MYNA) for June, or 4.) total points on MYNA from the time you joined MYNA?

I'm not trying to get a thousand points to get my name up there, I'm just wondering how you guys are able to get so many points per month, if that's the case.

I agree. You ought to submit the change request to the administrators here at Sparkpeople. The change, from a technical standpoint, should be very easy.

Somebody else (was it here?) had a great idea about people putting in their meals and water in advance. SP should only calculate points from todays date going backwards. That way I don't get points for a meal I put in tomorrow until tomorrow. Honestly I can't imagine that change would be that hard and it wouldn't be discouraging for those who live our SP lives day to day to come in at the first of the month and see somebody with 1200 points.

Niteman3d's PS below is the key. You must click the "get your Spark Points" button contained in the email.

I wasn't doing this for the first two weeks on Sparkpeople but finally realized that I had to click the button to get the points.

The only ones you get credit for are the ones you signed up for in the daily newsletter type e-mails. E-mails that are responses to the board or private e-mails don't count. The maximum number of the newsletters that you can sign up for is six a day and you get a point for the weekly update as well.

PS
The e-mails you get credit for have a bar to click near the bottom of the page that says "get your Spark Points". If you're not clicking that, you won't get your points either.

Anybody have trouble getting credit for emails received and read?? I've notice this is a line item in the list of things that give points but I never get points for it. I do receive and read/respond to a lot of emails every day...

Some things about the points seem odd. You get points for food you log in in advance, but you don't get points for cardio that you log a day too late. I have twice logged cardio the day after and in neither cases did I get any points. I also think you can log excercise in advance and get points for it. And if you, for example, log full two hours of cardio one day, and then correct it for 30 minutes, the system does not take the points back.

I average between 50 Ė 80 SP points a day usually I get low points on the wheel but, I read every thing I am sent. I post every day. I donít write down my exercise or food until I eat it with the exception on planning a meal in advance but, I do tweak it after the fact.

June first I did notice somebody had 430 points first thing in the morning. I thought to my self they must have been up all night to achieve that. While SP has climbed up into one of the more important things I do every day I would not loose sleep over it.

I'm surprised that people would log their planned meals ahead of time. Seems like it would be a waste to go back and tweak it with actual consumption. I post what I ate for breakfast immediately after eating and usually, since I take my lunch to work, go ahead and post lunch too. Sometimes I even talk with the wife and we decide what we're going to have for dinner so I post that as well. I have my snacks pretty much down to a banana at 10:30 and one at 3:30, so it is quite easy, with the food grouping options to post my foods daily--rather quickly.

In fairness to some of the big point people, many of them make up their menu and exercise schedules in advance and by the end of the month you'll see that they fall more in line with the rest of us that do it on a daily basis, so the big lead is only temporary. OTH, there are some that I still have questions about, but I quit worrying about them a long time ago. In fact, I'm about to really contract my online activity to cut loose some more time for real life happenings, so that's going to mean doing only the things necessary to maintaining the healthy lifestyle and kind of giving up on any kind of point competition. With all the new options for getting points, you could spend three hours a day here just collecting points! That makes for a sore butt just from sitting.

Niteman is right on - the points are a rough indicator of things. I know I try to read the articles every day and those are worth points which is nice - but on the first day of the month we've got someone on the team with 300 points already. That's a lot of sparking. emoticon

I agree that time is the key for what I can and can not get done. I start each day with a plan and go from there, some days good, some days ok and some days, well you know. As for the points, I do what I can, and do not pay much attention to them. but still the real goal is your health, so I just look at what I have done and keep on trucking.

A lot of folks just don't have the time to do it all, so their point total doesn't really tell the whole story. On the other hand, there are some who stretch the truth when it comes to points, so their totals might not tell the whole story either. Guess what I'm saying is that the points are fun and a good personal motivational tool, but you can't put too much faith in them to determine what's really going on. Maybe a real rough indicator at best?

Haha, true enough. I've had some problems to sort out in the past few weeks, so I haven't been very active, but I'm planning on returning to the sparkpeople routine, since it's way easier with the help and support of you people. I'm sorry for the crappy English, I really need to work on that.

If there are 170 people in this group and the top ten scoring people score almost half the points, there must be a whole bunch of people that don't do anything at all. Just a little late night math.
