I am in damage control mode for a few days. Had a birthday on Tuesday and my daughter, who is an aspiring chef, made me a delicious dinner with sugar-free, gluten-free cheesecake for dessert.
Notice I didn't say it was fat-free?
So I'm hitting the treadmill pretty hard as my next weigh-in is Monday.

Hope everyone is doing great here ion this first day of Spring. I am looking forward to brighter longer days and getting in more time outside. Today I will be doing Week 3 Day 1 of the Walk to Run 5K program. Anyone else doing anything to work towards their goals?

Fortunately for me none of those items were in the budget this week lol.

I am Irish and love the holiday, but I find it odd that we pay premium $$$ for food that sustained a nation during periods of terrible poverty and famine.

Don't get me wrong they are delicious..... I just wonder if a couple hundred years from now will people pay extra for chicken nuggets and french fries?

Had the obligatory corned beef, cabbage and potatoes dinner. With an Irish wife it's sort of mandatory and one of only three days a year that I don't cook.

So what's up with everyone?

Started a 10 week challenge team here on Spark yesterday and am eager to get back on track and get my health to where it should be yesterday. Yesterday was a great day with a 50 minute walk in the morning and then Week 2/Day 2 completed of the Walk to Run 5K program. Finished the night watching an old episode of King of Queens and did some free weights, sit ups, push ups and stretching at the same time.

How about you guys?

I know how you feel, staying motivated when the choices of out-door activities are less attractive because of the temperature is a challenge. The view from my mountain bike is much better than the one from my treadmill. Just have to keep telling myself that the treadmill is still a healthier view than the one from the couch. emoticon

I am still hitting the gym 4-5 days a week, right now all cardio, treadmill, bike, and pool. my gym has multple locations and one of them has an indoor track. Granted the view is not great and i am running in a circle but its a little different than the treadmill.

snow, cold and short on time has put me on the t25 videos, ( i do like them) and tread mill and indoor bike, and I am loving it. Yeah outside is better , but pedalling on the bike while a -25 degree wind chill blows outside, I feel pretty good. I am have my weight creep up the last few weeks so I am resolved to dropping 2 pounds a week for the next 2 months, no excuse, eat less and remain calm and in control.

Warm front came through this week. But the weekend is going to be wet. Had a 26 mile run planned. If it were summer time I would not think twice about running in the rain but this flu season and I don't want to be sick

Coach Gary reporting in, yeah, that's right, I am now a certified running coach. Ha, how about that. not sure what step to take next with it, but the locale track team might need some help.
Anyway, i ran 2 miles today, first run since the marathon and it felt great. and then 45 minutes of some yoga and I am ready to go.
What's going on with you guys, lets hear from ya, How is your team doing, MLB or NFL or Collage.? Working out or still thinking about it? lets hears some chatter

Today's exercise was the non-spectacular but easily doable type. On the way back from an appointment I got off the bus about a mile and a half early, and enjoyed a walk through Golden Gate Park. Walk took almost 30 min, but completing the bus ride would have taken another 10 min or so, plus waiting. So, for only 10 minutes extra I got in almost 30 min of walking. Cool. @GW - Now I've got time to tell you about it

OK, GW -- for yesterday I joined a local bunch for a 6 mile urban hike that included going down, then up a major cliff beside the ocean on newly constructed steps that made it easy. Wish I had counted the steps. Awesome views.

Ditto congrats, GW, on the FIFTH marathon. I do 10K's, and not recently. Great going!

Right now recovering from a shoulder injury happened during a hike. Surgery. Months of PT. Just starting again tomorrow with strength training under the therapists watchful eye. Messed up my bicycling and hiking so I seem to be a little heavier. This will resolve itself when my general activity picks up, I expect.

And looming out there is a through hike on the Appalachian Trail. Not real practical, but it's there!

Congratualtions on completing your marathon! I hope to some day be in good enough shape to be in one.

I am just getting back into everything here. I am commited to doing it this time. Just as long as I can keep my motiviation up, I will be alright.

My best friend recently lost 56 pounds and is looking trim. I weighed myself for the first time in who knows how long the other day and felt like an idiot, so here I am. I'm on Day 3 and going strong. It'sw not easy though.

Ok, so I walked for a month 3 miles a shot 3to 4 days a week and now I am going to the gym on the treadmill doing the interval workout for 60 minutes a shot. Feeling tight in my core and my glutes are feeling the burn and I'm enjoying it, then someone says weight loss is 80% what you eat. Am I working this hard for nothing? I don't think so.

I did a hill run that used to be a favorite. What a difference a few months can make. I ran the whole way instead of walking the steeps and my pace was a stunning (to me) 10:49. 6.1 miles in 66 mins. The elevation went from a low of 104 feet to 545 ft., 1500 total gain.
It was fun too!

Beats the road hands down in many ways... looking to possibly do a longer trail race before the September full Marathon. Haven't found one yet. What is it about this running thing? Ran a 90 min trail run Wed. then a two hour run Thurs. I kept wanting to quit but kept going. Why?
I guess, runners run... what other explanation is there?

That is awesome... after all of that hard work a party is most definitely called for!
The Mohawk Hudson Marathon that I was planning on running closed before I could sign up. I'm leaning towards the Hamptons Marathon 9/29/12 instead but looking around a bit more before I leap.

Ok guys, I finished my race in 7 hours and 24 minutes, and it was a blast. I mean by mile 25 my quads were all tore up from the down hills, but I finished and will be doing another one for sure. It was about 3000 ft of elevation and I did not train enough for running down hill so I paid the price, but other then that I am doing ok. The event was well run, the volunteers were great and the trails were well marked and the aid stations well stocked and very helpful. My 23 year old son ran this one with me and it made it a great bonding event. As for training, just add more down hill running to my training and I will push for a sub 7 hour next Year. by the way we ran a 14:22 pace. the winner came in 3:45. so I have lots of room to grow. the average finish time was 6:22.
so a week off and some foam rolling and yoga and then start the triathlon season

Ran an easy 8 miles on a gorgeous dirt road/trail in the light rain. I took photos. I'll have to post them.

Hopefully, you are just adding muscle weight which is what it sounds like. The muscle will pay off in the fat burning, eventually.
I agree that the BMI scale is more of a guide line not and exact number to shoot for. Its more important to have good cholesterol and blood pressure numbers and be active and happy than to strive for the perfect weight. Sounds like you have done a alot of good work.

I will find out Saturday if I am a ultra runner of not. I am looking forward to the run and know it is going to hurt, but in a good way. And 32 miles on the Ice Age Trail will be a run to remember. I will be back Sunday with my report

I've been researching ultra marathons...

When I went to pick up my packet the day before my race (North Face Endurance Challenge at Bear Mountain - Half Marathon) a lot of the 50 milers were coming in, along with the marathoners, 50k, and Marathon relay participants. They do the longer events on Saturday and the Half, 10K and 5K on Sunday. I was mesmerized by the 50 milers.

All participants receive a red technical shirt, you then head over to the shirt screening tent and tell them which event you've done or are going to do and they screen it for you. I was on line with a couple of 50 milers and yes I was staring in awe at the attractive but otherwise normal looking 30 something year old man and woman and I stupidly asked with the slightest tone of incredulity, "you just ran 50 miles?" They looked over at me, shrugged their shoulders and nonchalantly, said, "yeah". Well, I was impressed, as were my 13 y.o. son and his good buddy who came up with me.

Days later I'm still in awe and now I'm contemplating running that race next year.

I am sore in all of these new places today!

I am seriously considering adding a trail run per week to the regime as while it still is 'running' it uses a lot of different muscles from street running which, it seems to me, will assist in preventing potential overuse issues from the increased training that I'm about to do for the October Marathon.

The other benefit that I'm seeing is the sheer variety and interest that it will add. My senses were on overload with all of the new sights and sounds that running the mountain trails provided over the last few days. And my goodness, I live in a great area for trail running. Bear Mountain is just a few miles North and I'm practically in Harriman State Park which I can see from my living room window. For whatever reason, I was of the opinion that trail running was not for me. What a great new discovery!

Looks like a lot of you guys are really doing an amazing job so I thought I'd ask for a bit of advice.
Basic info: I've yo-yoed a lot in the last 9 years. Mainly lost since I used to be near 300 lbs at 5'4". I'm down to 179 now and aiming for about 150 since my family runs kinda squat and thick so I don't feel like I should be exactly where the BMI says. When I was in really good shape previously about 150 - 155 was where I stayed. We're not the kind of people who can get down to 6% bodyfat and look ripped so I just want to get back to being healthy and strong.

I've dropped a few clothes sizes recently and felt like I was doing really well. I've been cycling nearly 20 miles a day, 5 days a week to go to work and get home. I'm hitting the gym 3 times a week for weight lifting. I really plateaued for a while and was told it was likely that I wasn't getting enough calories since I am cycling so much, so I upped the calories a bit.
Imagine my horror when I stepped on the scale and I had gone up 9 pounds!

I'm going to get a measuring tape and take some measurements of the belly and hips since that's where I'm really still storing the fat. The plan is that if I weigh in next month and find I am still not really losing weight but there's a loss on the tape, then I will feel like I am at least making progress.

In the meantime, is there anything I can do to feel less rubbish about myself and like I'm not doing enough?

Unecumque homo est, ibi benifico locus est - Seneca.

I am with you JT, after so many miles on the road, a off road race is just more than running, you really need to have balance and the ability to change gears and pick where you place your feet. good job, and I have the NB 10 but will need to get more miles on the trail before I run a race in them.

The Bear Mountain Half was awesome! Who knew that I'd like trail running? The minimal shoes (NewBalance Minimus 10) worked out really well except for about a mile of downhill (at about mile 11) where there were only big sharp rocks. I lost a LOT of time on that. I spent most of the race with a guy who was doing it barefoot... I left him at this point.

After that I started to cramp up ALL over my legs... Thankfully that dissipated enough so that I could finish strong.

I came in at 3:13 (an hour and a minute longer than my road Half two weeks ago) at the same time that the little kid 1K was finishing up. The kids were SO CUTE! But that Spongebob dude was scary... just sayin'... The weather was perfect and I'm feeling great!

They had well organized and well stocked aid stations but I brought my camel and loaded it up with all 100 ounces of solution which lasted right up to the end. I brought my own gels and used 3 of them.

Exactly 21 weeks to go until the Mohawk Hudson Marathon! WooHoo!

JT, you will do great, just trust yourself to know the pace that will get you to the end. I had a great time at the race today, rolled my ankle pretty good and it is a little sore right now, but hopefully RICE will have me up and runnig Monday. finished in a hour and my son ran with me so it was double the fun. Have a great day everyone and keep moving
