LAWOMAN - Yes, I do have an 11 month old and he definitely keeps me busy. As far as staying on track with workouts, I have to be committed to get in a workout no matter what. So, I either get in my cardio while he's napping, when my husband gets home or I utilize his jumperoo and/or walker to keep him entertained. If I do workout while he's awake I keep a stash of treats and toys nearby so that if he does become fussy in the middle of my workout I can use those to keep him distracted. I can usually do my strength training while he's crawling around.

As far as eating healthy, I try not to have any junk food in the house so that when I go to make myself a meal or a snack my options are mostly healthy.

I wouldn't say that my efforts have been hurt or helped, but they are definitely challenged. Since I cannot always do things the moment I want to I have to be more flexible, but as long as I stay committed to my goals I will succeed.

Congrats on being on the Podium Melisa!! I see that you have a little one. How do you manage to stay on track with chasing a little baby around? Does it help or hurt your efforts?

I love to read as well, but I've found that James Patterson's books never disappoint me. When I had the time, I could read his books in a day or two.

I love baking, too! I just don't want to eat it! :)

My favorite genre of film would be a romantic comedy. If I'm going to sit down for a few hours and watch something I want it to be light hearted and funny. As far as favorite movie, that's a tough one! I loved You've Got Mail, You, Me & Dupree, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, etc. I don't think I can pick just one.

I guess my favorite genre of music would be country, but it really depends on my mood. Sometimes I listen to pop, sometimes oldies...it really just depends. I don't listen to hard rock, though. There's nothing wrong with it, it's just not my style.

My favorite hobby would be photography and using my creative side. I'm also learning how to decorate a cake for my son's 1st birthday.

My favorite author is James Patterson. I love the suspense in his thrillers!

Hi BOMBCHELL! I know how frustrating it is when you are doing all of the right things, but you aren't seeing any results on the scale. Do you take measurements? Are they going down? How are your clothes fitting? Many times I have to remind myself that there are other ways to see results other than the scale.

Also, are you eating enough? It sounds like you are burning a lot of calories, so make sure that you're giving your body enough fuel to keep doing its job.

Also, I'm really impresssed that you have 3 children, are going to grad school and working out most days of the week. Keep it up and you will see results! emoticon

Hi MOM195!

Yes, I'm currently in a plateau right now. What I've started doing this week is changing my exercise routine. Normally I would use the treadmill for 30 minutes, but this week I've reintroduced the bike for 10 minutes, plus 30 minutes on the treadmill. So far I haven't seen any results, but I'm going to stick with it and hopefully by the end of the week something will change!

As far as portions and calorie counting, is there any possible way that extra calories creeped in that you weren't aware of?

Hi FORGODNTRAVIS!

I think my biggest motivator this time has been my son. First and foremost I want to set a good example for him (and other future children) to eat healthy and make exercise a priority.

Starting any new diet/fitness program can be overwhelming, so I would tell a beginner Sparker to take it slow. Changing your lifestyle should not happen overnight. If it did more people would be successful!

Hi Jen (Determindchicky)! Yes, there have been many times that I wanted to give up. And in the past I have given up before, but it got me nowhere!

This time around when I get frustrated I don't even consider giving up because I love the feeling that I get after a good workout or making healthy meal decisions throughout the day. I feel like I'm really making a difference in my life whether I see it on the scale or not.

Magellen - Wow, you have really stumped me with this question! I am finding it difficult to define happiness without using the word happy! emoticon

I define happiness by being content and satisfied in your own life.

At the moment this is the best definition that I can come up with, but if I think of something better I will definitely post it.

I am stuck between two weights within a pound of each other and can not get scale to go lower. I average 45 mins of workout a day with 4 days at 60 min. I have added wall push ups and this week adding 3 days of butterfly kicks. What am I doing wrong? I have been stuck probably a month if not two. Am so discouraged. I wrote a blog hoping people would spark me but only one person read it, which was great but dang I feel like I lost my spark.

My exercise routine is pretty simple. I strength train on MWF, and I work my arms, legs & core each time.

I do cardio 5x's a week, but the days I do them depends on what I have going on that week. We have a treadmill and stationary bike in our basement, although I use the treadmill the most. Each workout is a minimum of 30 minutes. I take 5-6 minutes to warm up to the "aerobic" zone and stay in that zone for about 20 minutes then I take 5 minutes to cool down. I like to increase the incline instead of my speed. I don't like to run, so during my workouts I am at a fast walk.

I just started using the bike again yesterday to switch up my workout routine. My legs were burning within a minute, so I will need to gradually work up to a 30 minute workout on the bike. I only did 10 minutes yesterday on the bike and I was sore the rest of the day, but today I am fine. So I will aim for another 10 minutes today, along with 20-30 minutes on the treadmill.

Good question!

For breakfast I usually have cereal, coffee & a fruit (1/2 a banana or 1 cup of strawberries). I try to pick a cereal that is high in protein with some fiber. My favorite is Kashi GoLean Crunch. Quaker Oatmeal Squares is also a good cereal. I also add Benefiber to my coffee because I always have a hard time of reaching my fiber range for the day.

For Lunch I will usually make myself a ham sandwich/wrap. For the bread/wrap I pick something that is lower in calories and high in protein. Then I will add lettuce and a tomato slice. No cheese or mayo/mustard, either. As a side I will have yogurt and/or a veggie (like sliced carrots).

I always like to try new recipes at dinner time. So, we will have chicken 2-3 times per week, beef 1-2 and occasionally fish. I always have a veggie side and some sort of bread. My husband is a meat and potatoes kind of guy, so I try to keep us both happy when planning our meals.

My snacks will vary from day to day. I like apples, Dannon Light & Fit yogurt, Craisins, cheese sticks, and of course the occasional junk food. :)

If I'm eating something that comes out of a bag I am always mindful of what the serving size is and measure it out. Before I eat any of it I put the bag away so the temptation to grab a few more is gone.

Thank you! I would have to say portion control and learning to say no!

I used to just eyeball my portions, and I couldn't have been more wrong. The first time I weighed a serving of pasta I was amazed at how small it really was. But the funny thing is that the suggested portion is usually more than enough to fill me up! If you don't have one already, get a food scale.

Saying no to sweets was really hard for me. At birthday parties I started saying no to the cake and ice cream. What really helped me to say no to them was the realization that it's not the last cake or bowl of ice cream I will see. Once I realized that it made my decision so much easier! I've become a little more lenient with myself lately just because of the progress I've made, but I still watch the portion size.

Congratulations on your weight loss! You're off to a great start!

Hi Annie! First off I just want to say congratulations for your weigh loss! You should be so proud of yourself!!!

There are a few things that I do to stay motivated when I hit a plateau. One thing is to look at my weight over time chart. It's inspiring to see how far I've come, and I also notice that my losses flatten out for a little while, but then they drop again (if that makes any sense). And the reason that they continue to drop is because I stay consistent in my efforts.

Another thing that keeps me motivated is how good I feel after I've worked out and made healthy food choices throughout the day. There have been times that I've gone a few days without working out and it really effects my mental health. So, working out and eating right affects my overall health, not just my physical health. I stay at home with my 11 month old son, so I really need to be on top of my game!

Also, this week I plan on switching up my workout hoping to see some results from that!

I hope this helps in some way. Just stay consistent in exercising and eating right and you'll break through that plateau!

Hi Melisa! I noticed in your post over on the Determination Challenge that you're stuck on a plateau. I am too, and I was wondering how you keep from losing your motivation when you get stuck like that?

Wow, thank you for choosing me this week to be on the podium! I can't wait to hear everyone's questions!

I honestly don't remember how I found SparkPeople. I think I heard about it watching a talk show, but I'm not certain.

I chose my SP ID because I'm recreating myself, therefore I am The New Melisa!

My weight loss goals are to lose a minimum of 14 pounds and to tone my muscles. I also want to keep exercising on a regular basis (even after I've reached my goal) and to eat healthier (but still allow myself some treats).

You know, I've tried losing weight several times in the past and it's either never worked for me or the healthy habits didn't stick. This time is so different. I had rejoined SP back in November but still wasn't very serious or committed to my goals. Sometime around the first of the year suddenly a light bulb went off and my attitude towards eating right and exercising changed. I was so tired of feeling less than great, so something had to change!
