As much as I love kayaking, I hate cold more. Not sure how often I would go if I had to use a wet suit. Hope it warms up enough soon so you can get out more AND not need the wet suit.

I have only been out three times so far this Spring. It is still cold enough to require a wetsuit.

Got to kayak again in a Florida spring. This time, Silver Springs in Ocala, FL. Spent 5-1/2 hours on water with over four hours of paddling time. Luckily was able to kayak upstream first. It was such an incredibly beautiful place.

I've attached someone else's video of a kayak in the area. I saw all the wildlife on the video though only one monkey. The state is removing them as they eat turtle & bird eggs as well as native baby birds. Also, an additional area is open to kayaking that has a narrower channel with shallow, clear water surrounded by trees on one side and interesting pieces of the parks past on the right.

Went kayaking on Lake Erie. It is still solid ice out past the break wall, so we just paddled back and forth in the bay where we put in. Lots of ice floes and dead fish... and lots of gulls eating the dead fish. I was definitely glad for the wetsuit.

Had a great time kayaking at Rainbow Springs, FL area. Kayaked for over four hours. Longer upstream against a very strong current. Rainbow Springs is the fourth largest spring. If below link works, you'll get to see some of the images of the area. Haven't seen any pictures yet that actually do justice to the area.

This is one of my favorite "seasons" in Florida. It is just plain comfortable. Summer gets intense. Don't mind it as much since I started kayaking.

Saturday going to kayak at Rainbow Springs. Of all the places I've been in Florida, this is one of the most beautiful. The water is clear with deeper places very turquoise. It's also one of the cleaner. No disposable items are allowed and this is enforced with patrols & fines. Besides kayaking, it's great place to go tubing. Would love to do that when it gets warmer. Water comes out of the springs in the 70 degree range.

It won't be long before you all will be sharing your adventures. This country has so many beautiful spots. So glad there are kayaks, canoes, stand-up-paddle boards, boats, and other ways of experience the beauty.

Got out today with a group of about 20 people. The Heartland Chapter of Florida Trail has a Meetup.com page. Since we've done that, the number of people participating has more than doubled.

Finally got the right plug system going and my kayak seat stayed dry. Only drawback so far with my Necky sit-on. So now I am even more stoked about this kayak.

Again, I was with the leaders in the group and not bringing up the rear. Love it!

Posted a picture from that paddle. There were some wonderful pictures posted on Meetup.com that showed how wonderfully clear the water was and also some pictures of the Manatees. However, they weren't my pictures so only felt comfortable sharing the one with me in it. I'm in the yellow kayak.

Kayaked Sunday @ Weeki Wachee springs (FL) with a Meetup.com group. This was my first group kayak trip with my new Necky 14' sit-on kayak. I am so happy with it. I kept up with the leaders. Still in adjustment phase with the 14' length. We were kayaking downstream and at times flow was fast. A couple of times I ended up at places I didn't want to be. With last log, I had visions of going over but did avoid it.

Got to see some Manatees. In the winter when the Gulf temperature goes down, they head inland to the springs OR hand around the power plants.

Had a great day. For anyone thinking about visiting Florida, I can't mention too often how beautiful the springs are. The water was clear the whole trip. There is a rental concession at this park. They also do shuttling kayaks or drivers.

Sorry, it's the benefit of living in an area that is scary in hurricane season.
It was absolutely beautiful on the water today. Saw more turtles sunning themselves on logs than I could count AND only one alligator. There were some great flowers to see but not very many birds. That was surprising.
I love that kayaking brings us to places landlubbers can only dream about.

Going kayaking today with husband & old friends that I haven't seen in years. They are visiting in Florida from Mass. Going to a place that has rentals. Have decided to also rent instead of taking our own. If we took our own, we would be paying for putting in and for their shuttle service. Will miss using my new kayak but it will make it easier to go out afterwards. Also, we carry kayaks on trailer so will save some money in gas fuel.

Going to Little Manatee River. It was the first trip I did with my own kayak in 2007. That time I saw a Manatee. It's a one way paddle down stream in a very pretty area.

Sunday, kayaking with a Meetup.com group at Weeki Wachee. That area is a Florida springs area. Expect to see Manatees. Will use my own kayak for that one.

Got out again with new kayak. Went again to a local lake so I can spend time learning kayak. Next week, taking it to a river. Love the kayak AND love the paddle.

For me, yes. I find it easier to paddle. There is a kayak dealership in the Tampa area that has a small pond behind their shop. I got to try several different paddles. All the paddles were lighter weight than the generic paddle I have been using for years. I was impressed with the bent shaft. They are supposed to be easier on your joints.

Finally got on water. Love the kayak! It is faster than my other two. Hobie using drive gear can go fast BUT so clumsy without. Didn't have the right scupper plug under seat & got wet but that is fixable. Will try to go out Thurs. to a local spot. Want to make sure have got wet seat issue taken care of.

Before I sold my Hobie, I had picked up a new paddle. That is also making it easier on my wrists. I got a bent shaft paddle that has a smaller diameter shaft. It was my Christmas gift. It is a VERY nice paddle & now with a faster kayak can truly appreciate it.

Kayak finally arrived today. Yeah! Will be taking it out on Friday. I am so stoked. Will take an adjustment. New sit-on kayak is 14' long & only 25" wide. My Malibu MIni was only 9' & very wide (and very slow). Hobie was 13' and over 30" wide. I am so looking forward to having a good paddling kayak. Hobie was only good if you used drive gear. I kept on using in river with stumps & other places that I couldn't use the gear.

Can believe re being in the 50's. When I lived in NH met some people on a visit from Homer, Alaska. Their temperatures were warmer than where we lived in NH.

I live in Southeast Alaska, and believe it or not, it was so warm this weekend that my friends and I went out for a paddle. It was 55 degrees and sunny, which really IS summer weather for us. We went up to a local lake, which had a very thin layer of ice, and just paddled through it in big circles. It was wonderful to get outside & do something fun.

It is all of 9F here with blowing snow. Pretty much all local bodies of water are frozen over. So, no kayaking for me at this time. My brother is doing a roll class, but that is in a pool.

New kayak still not here--getting anzy. Will admit it's been too cold for kayaking even for Florida. Realize Florida cold is NH warm but my body is used to Florida weather.
The kayak I ordered, Necky Vector 14' is a sit-on kayak that is narrower (width 25") than most sit-on's. This will add speed to the kayak.

LInk to info on kayak ordered & to YouTube video:

I ordered a new kayak today. I sold my13' Hobie and will be letting my 9' Malibu Mini X go. I'm getting a Necky Vector 14' sit-on kayak. For a sit-on, it's narrow @ 25" versus 30" & more. I need a kayak that will be easier to paddle. The Hobie was ok if you could use the drive gear, but I've been in too many places I couldn't AND it is a bear to paddle. I am so psyched. Will take three weeks.

Spent Christmas Day paddling with about 20 other people on the Hillsboro River. It was a pretty section with a mix of undeveloped land on one side and beautiful homes on the other. When I signed up on Meetup.com to do this, I still had my Hobie. I sold it the day before so had to use my 9' Malibu MIni X. Not the best kayak for open water so paddle was several hours TOO long. In the middle of January will be getting a 14" Necky Vector sit-on. For a sit-on, it's designed to be fast. It's only about 25" wide. I like sit-ons but need something faster for all types of water. My Hobie is a slow paddler and I have been doing a lot of places where I couldn't use the Mirage Drive.
I've had wrist issues lately but still want to kayak--hence the changes. I did get a new paddle has a narrower shaft and a bent design. That was fun to use.
It was a beautiful paddle with a bonus -- no alligators.
So nice to live in Florida in the winter. (Got "hiking" on Monday as well as a casual paddle last Sunday).

Had an "interesting" paddle yesterday. I was with a group at Cockroach Bay Preserve. It's an area with mangroves off of Tampa Bay, FL. Tampa Bay feeds into the Gulf. The paddle was planned months in advance--but a tide chart was not checked when planned. We were at low tide. Some areas were so low, we either used our paddles to push against the ground OR got out & pulled. The muck would go from 2" to 1' deep with one step. When we got in a mangrove tunnel, those area were deep enough to stay in kayak. Being in a mangrove tunnel with sunlight filtering through the tress is so incredibly beautiful.

It was a small but fun group. Had a good time.

Just wondering now that it is cooler - cold --- if people will still be out kayaking. I have the ocean to go paddle in soon the lakes will be covered in ice..
Does any one kayak in the winter where it is cold..like Canada and the northern States?

Led a group of 15 on the Hillsboro River in the Tampa FL area. Most of the time we were within the boundaries of Hillsboro River State Park. The weather cooperated and the scenery was as beautiful as always. Where we kayaked is the first part of the Hillsboro River paddling trail. We went by no houses only natural areas. Did see more alligators than turtles--I much prefer the ratio the other way OR even no alligators. Saw quite a few water birds and beautiful flowers. Had a good day--it was good to be out again.

I visited my kayak which is stored in my parents' barn. It was sadly dusty. Last year I went kayaking on Easter Sunday. I doubt that will happen this year.

Oooooooooooooh, here we are in upstate NY with snow on the ground, and no sign of spring---Florida has been sounding like a wonderful thing for quite a few weeks now~!

Sorry I don't know places in / near Chicago---hopefully someone here does~

We went to the Orlando area in Feb. It was great weather. We didn't go with our boats this time, but I got on the water a few times. I was surprised there were so many places to paddle around Orlando. We want to go back with our boats and go fishing. I'm ready for spring. I paddle in Michigan on the weekends. I live in the Chicago area, but haven't found anyplace that I care for much here. If there's anyone from the Chicago area, I would like to know of some good places to try this coming year.

I am *ready* to go to Florida!! Up here the ice hasn't melted yet, and even the April kayaking outings, wet and dry suits are necessary. I'd like to vacation with someone emoticon emoticon

Had a great kayak last Saturday in Kings Bay area of Crystal Springs on the western side of Florida. It's north of Tampa. There are many springs in the area including the pretty Three Sisters. The water comes out of the springs in the 70 degree range. The area connects with the Gulf. Right now the water in the springs is warmer than the Gulf which draws the Manatees. Parts of the area are protected during Manatee season. There were so many Manatees I didn't even try to count. The weather was sunny and more comfortable than predicted.

If anyone is interested in visiting that area, there are a lot of kayak rentals. There are also boats that will provide wet suits & snorkeling gear and bring you to the various springs to be among the Manatees.

Thank you so much Chandra. That is nice! Nicer than the Peclican Pursuit 120 I am using. Looked up the features of yours, and that may be my next kayak. I liked the cushioning on the knees, and seems to have good storage, too.

My Pelican is very stable, too, and it is about the same weight as yours. I can get in my truck by myself if needed, or just pull it to water when the lake level is down. (And it is almost always down!)

Went out about an hour ago to get some paddling in, but the wind had changed from the north to the west, and I don't enjoy a side wind.

Thanks again Chandra and good paddling to all!

Kayaked yesterday in central Texas. Love the cooler weather this time of year. Here in Texas the triple digit heat in the summer becomes much more problematic than the cold. Probably a 10 mile journey, give or take a mile. I have a 45lb. Pelican that I use and love it. So glad to meet fellow kayakers!

I'm hoping to kayak on Christmas Day in the Tampa area; however, the county parks aren't open so not sure the trip is on.
Being able to kayak year round helps to make up for the summers.

Kayaked for the first time in the Rainbow Springs area. Friends of mine were camping at the State Park Campgrounds in Dunnellon FL. We put in at the campground and kayaked up to the springs headwaters in the Rainbow Springs State Park. Then came downstream to beyond KP Hole (county park) and back up the campground. The springs are so incredibly clear with spots of turquoise water. There were a lot of people drift scuba diving & one one group on tubes. Tubing is a popular thing in the area during the summer. The water comes out of the springs in the 70-72 degree. If anyone visits the area, there are a lot of kayak & canoe rentals. You can also rent tubes & get shuttled. Would need your own equipment for the scuba (including wet suit) but there are also shuttle services for this also.

Some of the prettiest areas of Florida are found in the springs. This one was exceptionally beautiful.

If you come, please be aware everything you carry must be reusable--no throw aways. The river is patrolled. Any contraban will be confiscated with possibility of fines. Maybe that's one of the reason the river is so pristine.

Been doing a lot of paddling! Chautauqua Lake, Lake Erie and the Chadakoin multiple times. Participated in river clean up on the Chadakoin today, with plans to paddle the Conewango tomorrow. It makes sense to me that if I am going to use the waterways that I help with the clean up. Though some of the junk we found was astonishing and vaguely disgusting.

Went for my first large group paddle down an inlet to Chautauqua Lake. Very different than paddling with just one or two other people. It was fun, and I will probably do it again, but it is noisier, so didn't see as much wildlife.

Led a paddle on the Weeden Island Canoe Trail in St. Petersburg FL for my Florida Trail Chapter. The canoe trail has 39 trail markers as is mostly one way. Several parts of the trail go through mangrove groves; it would be tight in the mangroves if you met people. The trail is four miles long; we put in a different spot than the beginning & did 5.5 miles.

The weatherperson lied. It was supposed to be sunny all morning. It poured but no thunder & lightening. When the sun shines, the mangroves are awesome to be in. We had pouring rain through all the mangrove areas except one small pass through. I was disappointed--I wanted to share the beauty of the place to the several people who had never been there.

If you're ever in Florida & are interested doing it, there are kayak rentals available at one put in spot. It's in Weeden Island Preserve. You do need to check tides. The trail through the mangroves is impassable in low tide. We had a very high tide-almost too high-a lot of ducking. It is good to get a map from the preserve. The last part of it was less obvious.

Did a paddle yesterday in an area of interlocking small lakes created by phosphate mining. It's called Saddlecreek & it's really close to my house. It's a beautiful area with a lot of egrets, herons, & other birds. It's also an area with a lot of alligators. I don't go there during the alligator mating season. I was hoping yesterday I wasn't in the middle of the Mom season. Alligator mom's are very protective of their babies for several months.

We got over 8" of much needed rain from Debbie & the water level was higher than usual. We were able to get into a back area that usually has too many stumps to get through. However, hearing alligators make their warning call made me very nervous & I was anxious to get out of there.

I'm glad I went, enjoyed the beauty, but was defiantly more anxious about the alligators than usual.

Finally got out on Conesus on Sunday morning. South end was pretty quiet. I love that as you paddle along the shore there, the folks out in their yards and docks stop and talk to you as you are going by. Makes the paddle longer but the sense of community is the best.

Went out on Cayuga Lake this morning at 5am, and watched the sunrise from out on the water. I was in my brother's Otter, which is good for creeks, but not great for rivers or lakes. It was a lot of work paddling to try and keep up with my brother and my niece who also went out today. I had a lot of fun anyways.

Went sea kayaking on Lake Ontario again yesterday

Tried hand-rolling my sea kayak yesterday and failed both attempts. Come to think of it, I'm not sure I've ever hand-rolled it before...

Ended up doing a deep-water self-rescue with a paddle float just because I could. Figured out the paddle has to go on the webbing behind the cockpit. It doesn't fit under the webbing on the front.

The water and air were just fine for unplanned swimming even though I had no drysuit or wetsuit on, just a polyester rash guard and shorts over a swimsuit (and pfd and skirt of course).

Planning to sea kayak tomorrow on Cayuga Lake

Not sure yet what I'll be doing this weekend.

Went kayaking today--it was my first physical exercise since getting sick several weeks ago.

The first part was great. In a group of 12, kayaked on Livingston (aka Reedy) Creek. The water was fairly clear, the scenery beautiful, and didn't see any houses. The last part was on a lake going against 15 to 36 mph winds to get to the park where our vehicles had been shuttled to. I had my little kayak which was great on the creek but so slow on open water. When the wind got extra gusty, I had to work hard not to go backwards. That part of the kayak felt endless.

All in all, the day was SO worth it. It felt good to have my body moving again.

Hard boiled eggs.

Cheap, you can buy 'em and boil them while camping, easy to pack, and the protein really keeps you going.

Even better if you have some little hot sauce packets.

I like to keep the miniature Clif bars in my pfd and a protein bar or two. The little Clif bars are just the right size to gulp down in an eddy before hitting the next big drop (the normal size Clif bars are too big for that), and they don't melt like the little Luna bars.

I know I'm a bit late replying, but I really like bring almond butter (like peanut butter) and jam sandwiches and fresh fruit. A lot of gas stations have pre-cut mixed fresh fruit you can buy. They usually keep well in a lunch box.

One of my go to foods for kayaking is slightly melted Swiss Cheese wrapped in small tortilla or half of a large one. Arnold round thins are another good bread choice. Swiss Cheese needs less refrigeration than sandwich meat. I personally like to take a whole washed pepper & eat it like an apple. My favorite is sweet red peppers.

My husband will bring a small Atkins protein shake that he'll do at the first rest stop. If it's gong to be a long paddle, I will probably do a 20gm protein bar at that point. (I have low blood sugar & need to do some refueling part way.)

I keep a permanent stash in both my hiking as well as kayak gear. It has a pkg of Trail Mix (make sure any chocolate pieces have coating-less messy), pkg of peanut butter crackers, a protein bar (about 10gm protein); a fruit bar or small packages of raisins, and package of nuts).

I once did a kayak with a Meetup.com group that was the Crystal River area (NE of Tampa). There were plenty of places to stop & stand. One lady bought out a jar of pickled green beans to share. They were great. Other fun things are watermelon or pineapple pieces with toothpicks to share. Dried apricots also work well. Cookies can be a fun treat.

Planning a big paddle this Sunday on the Wallkill in northern NJ. Eight miles from point to point. This will be my first long trip. What to pack for snacks/lunch?

Wow, building your boat is hardcore!

Nice looking lines and respectable length.

I prefer havIng a day hatch and low back deck (for rolling) but that's just me.

Keep us posted with pics! Start a thread about it!

Congrats. :-)

Just got back from an after-work paddle with some sea kayaking friends on Lake Ontario tonight. It was so warm I practiced my rolls and started teaching of of the guys how to roll.

We also practiced an accidental assisted deep-water re-entry. LOL

Great to hear you tried out stuff at Paddlefest, Joan!

You might find the Carolina a bit slow, depending on the kind of distances you want to paddle. it's more of a rec boat than a sea kayak.

Sounds like the march was nice, L2B.

I did two runs down Stonycreek Canyon in PA this weekend with a good crew. GPS tracks and pictures here:
