i just started getting into running about a month ago.... did my first 5k (may not sound like much, but for me it was a goal)... Detroit's Turkey Trot 5k!!

it really has helped with my endurance on the slopes... no jello-legs this year! (but we don't have 1 mile long runs here in michigan!) we'll see when i get out and play with you "big boys" out west this winter!!LOL

I have been cross country skiing for almost a month and the trails are right outside my door, so there is no excuse not to go daily. I did a lot of running until the snow came, and at first, I was disappointed that my running had to stop. But now I have set a clover-leaf of ski track, each loop is over 20 km long, and each loop MUST be re-set (without machinery) every time it snows. The running was the Perfect preparation for cross country skiing. My balance is so much better than last year; my knees are stronger; my breathing so much easier. I am doing 15 to 20 Km per day...and I will be svelte before the crocusses bloom in the spring!

i made sure to do a lot of trail running with lots of incline and decenting to get all kinds of muscles working and a lot of long bike trips for stamina...i always find that doing yoga is probably one of the best activities to prepare for the season, i snowboard and i find that it helps the most with strength and balance
this winter i am definitely going to pick up skiing again and do a lot of snowshoeing/cross country

Are you downhill skiing? I'm going to jump to that conclusion since that seems to be the majority here. In any case, my trainer has me do a lot of stablization moves, single leg hops laterally, say three-four feet side to side then stabilize in a single leg squat position then jump to the other side, or jump forward on one leg and stabilze before jumping forward to the opposite leg. I think just regular squats and lunges are probably good too, just get those legs in shape and strong!

Hi everyone,
I havae a family ski trip to Maine planned for New Year's this year. I run 5 miles every other or third day, but I would love specific exercises skiiers do to get ready for the season. The only thing I'm definetely going to do is get my skiis set to release at a lower weight since I've lost weight since last winter. Thanks Everyone!

We've been mountain biking lately, good cardio and balance, plus the great outdoors!

My trainer has been putting me through a lot of hopping, one leg balance exercises. Good for balance and stability. Hope this will translate to the skiing.

also got a ski pass to the cross country area.

I've begun a very strict workout regimen that includes lots of cardio that focuses on legs (think elliptical, stairmaster, bike) and some weights.

Anything cardio is good...it'll help get me ready to huff and puff my way around the slopes. ;-)

Your body doesn’t operate like a bank account with cutoff times & daily account balancing. Tracking calories eaten & burned over a 24-hour period is merely one way to monitor things. Going “over” on calories on any one day does NOT mean you have blown it; and it certainly doesn’t mean you should continue overeating and start over later, or that you should go to the opposite extreme of restricting food the next day. It is simply a very small bump in a very long road.

I suppose learning to skateboard would be a good alternative for snowboarding during the summer.

I'm not really getting ready for ski season specifically, so much as just losing weight/getting fit in general. I've recently joined a gym, so I'm starting a running and lifting program.

I just signed up for a rollar blading class that will supposedly enhance ski technique. What do you do to get ready for winter?
