Change is good. I'm still getting used to it, but it's nice to have the RSS feed since the email alerts hasn't seemed to work for a while.

It's hard to imagine that I still feel that the ending of the ski season is tragic... all the way mid May. That mentality is not at all popular with my friends and family still dealing with the snowy mix in North Dakota and parts of Minnesota.

I like the new team page format and am a big fan of the "Wall".

So how does everyone like the new SparkTeam pages? It took me a little while to get used to it but I think I now like it better.
PS - It's May 12 and it's snowing here in Colorado. Too bad most of the resorts have already closed for the summer!

Tessa, I agree, it's nice to be on skis regardless of the snow condition. Enjoy!
I did not get enough of it this year. Hope for more ski days next year.

We've had one day skiing in Chamrousse (near Grenoble) and now we are in Les 2 Alpes for a week. Snow is very hard in the morning and very slushy by the end of the day. At least here you can get high up where conditions are better (but it was very windy too this afternoon).
Great to be on skis again what ever the conditions!

Sasha, congrats on your certification!

With the drought here in California, we managed to have a great few days of skiing right after the snow storm. And it's only getting better there this week. I am sad we had to leave.

We have a motorhome so haven't decided for certain (but do need a camp site a part from the last couple of days when we will wild camp). I think though it will probably be Les 2 Alpes with a couple of days in Alp d'Huez at the end.
I'm sure there's plenty of snow-I'm not keen on ice though so freeze thaw isn't my favourite!

Tessa,
Where in the alps are you going to be? Here in Germany, we are really 'enjoying' spring conditions. In the southern alps, though, there's enough snow to last until June!
Have fun!

Our season in Ohio is done. Yesterday was the last day. We have such a short season, makes me sad. We managed to hit 100 days open this year. At least yesterday the conditions were just about perfect (by my standards). I love when it's real firm and fast and that is what we had yesterday (so much better than the day before when it was more like water skiing because it was so slushy). I managed to ski (according to the app I use for tracking) 10.1 miles and 6.8 k vertical (keep in mind where I ski is a hill, not a mountain...our longest run is 0.25 miles and our vertical is only about 240 feet). all in all, for around here, it was a good season. Now, if only I had a passion this great for anything that happens in the warmer weather.

I have a skiers edge machine which we got second hand (ebay). I use it a bit before we go skiing (we get just one week a year as we don't live near the mountains). The rest of the time I jog or cycle and when on holiday I walk up mountains.
Think we will be skiing on spring snow when we get to the alps in 2 weeks time.

I'm not ready for ski season to be over, despite the fact that you can no longer ski to the bottom of the mountain. You have to take your skis off about 30 feet away and walk through the muddy grass! I'm hoping we've got at least a couple of more weeks to ski at the top.

For off-season fitness, I've been trying to figure out what else I can do that's actually fun. I'm thinking maybe I need to get more into biking or roller blading. I like that skating is weight bearing, but I think there may be a wee bit of a learning curve! Any other ideas? I've jogged with a friend, which is fun, but doing it on my own is a chore.

Is anyone still out there? I don't know about the rest of you, but I am quite willing to talk snow all spring/summer and fall!

anyone have any good off season training tips?

I bought a ski machine a few years ago, but it's not quite the same. I would love to have a skier's edge, but they are so expensive. The one I have it a little different. It is still for downhill skiing, but not as much range of motion that the videos of skier's edge seems to show. It is still good, though. great workout, but I can't seem to stay on it very long, despite being able to ski all day. strange.

I'm about to hit the slopes, even though it is quite warm and with all the rain, I know the snow is less than ideal, but any day skiing is a good day!

I'm not sure how I missed your previous post about Workouts for Skiers and Snowboarders. I'll have to check that out when I get home!

hope everyone has a great day!

Congratulations Sasha! I'm glad your certification was such a positive experience. It's funny how something so anxiety inducing can end up being so much fun.

I was really hoping that this group would pick up again along with ski season, but that doesn't seem to have happened so much.

I'm feeling fortunate to have skied almost 20 days so far this season and the snow is just getting going here on the dry side of the polar vortex. Anyone in north america taking advantage of all that snow that just won't melt?

Thanks! I passed! it was a great experience. I loved every minute of it, although I was quite nervous for the teaching part. I learned a lot, got some great feedback (both from the examiner and from other group members). I got some compliments on my skiing that made me feel great about myself :)

It's an ancient rite, basically involves emoticon tasting new wine,,,,it's spread in the Alps and I'm sure you have something similar in US.

Sounds like a LOT of fun - so jealous. We have two resorts open here in Colorado, US and there should be more opening up in the coming days so I'm excited to get up there in a few weeks. I'm going to be in the mountains Nov 22-24. CANNOT WAIT!!!

It's hard to keep encouraged when it's 95 degrees in September! I have the same problem, I can't even imagine making turns down the slope when it still feels like summer outside. I guess it's why I joined the bootcamp - makes me accountable for showing up and sticking with it. I know it'll pay off in a few months when I can pretty much ski all day without fatiguing my muscles.
I've been doing a lot of one legged squats - ahhh... killer bum workout!!!

Good time to get going on the training... I ran a 10K race in June and I'm trying to keep that level of fitness but with the warm weather I'm finding it hard! It looks like I wont be skiing until the end of March so it's rather a long way off for me emoticon

Some CO resorts are staying open past their "closing" day. I think Vail, Breck, Aspen and Copper are all staying open through this weekend. So if you haven't had a chance - get your butts up there for some great spring powder.
**Please be aware that avalanche danger is high because of all this extra snow. They can happen even if you are inbounds. Stay safe out there!

So anyone want to share their favorite skiing/riding moment from the past year? Any major accomplishments? Or did you witness a beginner learn to make turns? Did you find some tree trails that were amazing?

I don't particularly have any stories - other than having to take a ski patrol sled down when I hurt myself. But I'd love to hear everyone elses stories!!

Sorry to hear about your back troubles.
My daughter (aged 19) has degenerating discs (adolescent disc disease). We are told there's nothing that can be done to improve them but she tries to do pilates type exercises to keep her core muscles strong and that seems to reduce her discomfort.

I took a few weeks off per the doctors orders - he doesn't want me lifting anything or doing any sort of high impact exercise. So I'm just doing some walking. I am taking a spinning class once a week to keep my legs doing SOMETHING.
My MRI showed... a bulging disc between L2 and L3 and very little with swiss cheese looking holes in my cartilidge between L1 and L2. The degenerating disc between L1 and L2 has been bad for some time (and why I've had back pain before) and the bulging of the other disc has put even more pressure on that disc.
So basically... I'm screwed. He wants me to get surgery to fuse L1 and L2 together. Continuing to go to the chiropractor should help with the bulging disc. I just don't know what to do... this sucks!

Hi Vanessa sorry for what happened to your back,,,pls keep us updated with your MRI, hopefully you will be alright in a couple of days with rest, steroids & so on.....
I had a problem around Xmas with my back as I chose heavy weights for an upper body class and I know what it means to feel a hurting back.
I'll be in touch and so will the team.

I went skiing last weekend up in Breckenridge. It was BITTERLY cold. We are talking about zero degrees (Fahrenheit) at the base of the mountain but definitely below zero with the wind chill. Being on the lift was rough so we just went up to mid mountain and skiied back down about 4 times. It was fun but I ended up having to call the ski patrol emoticon
I hurt my back and was in so much pain, I didn't think I could make it down the run. I was so embarrassed to have to call them for help but I guess that's what they're there for right?
Anyway, I have a back strain and have an MRI scheduled with my doc tomorrow to make sure it's not anything more. Currently, I'm on rest, ice and steroids right now. Ugh... I can't BELIEVE I hurt my back!

New England hasn't had much either, but its been cold so the ski areas have been making snow. Its pretty nice because the fair weather skiers don't go out when there isn't any snow. No lift lines.

I live 15 minutes from our local ski mountain in Bennington, NH and they are open every night until 9pm with big lights on every slope. So, I will go a couple nights a week after work and on the weekends. It has been my regular workout since they opened late November. Couldn't be a better motivation to get my exercise in!

Snow is good here in the United States mountain West region. They are calling for another foot of fresh stuff tomorrow through Friday. I got a condo this weekend in Breckenridge so I hope we make it up there Friday night! Fresh powder? Yes please!

I went to Breckenridge on Saturday and only took a few runs. My new boots were killing! I have to break them in so I've vowed to wear them around the house after work so that I'm not crying my eyes out when I'm skiing. Wow... forgot what it was like with new equipment!
But the snow was surprisingly good and we had fun. Anyone else getting outt there?

I haven't been just yet here in the West. And I'm probably not in any shape to do more than a couple of runs. But we have a few places open and I'm excited about getting out there.
I wonder how the East Coast of the US is doing since the hurricane dumped a bunch of precip last week. Anyone know?

I'm seeing pictures of snowy ski slopes in America-is anyone skiing yet?
Are we all ready-fitness/weight-to get going?
I don't get to ski until February (then only for 1 week) but looking forward to hearing from you guys who are at it all the time

I've been away from SP for about 8-9 months. Sorry team... Life just took hold and I couldn't get on to post. emoticon

I got new boots and new skis in May. I'm super pumped to give them a shot. I definitely needed new boots - my old ones HAD to go. I was constantly in pain with those.
And while I was getting new boots, I had my eye on Saloman Lord twin tips. And the local ski shop gave me one killer deal that I couldn't pass up.

I CANNOT WAIT to get back on the slopes of Colorado!
I have the Epic Local pass this year so I'll be spending time at Breckenridge and ABasin. Hope to see some of you up there.
Maybe this year I'll try to organize a day trip for those of us lucky enough to live near the slopes of Colorado. Thoughts?

Hi Marcyna! For next season I will get a season pass and it takes 8 ski days to pay for itself.
(or the first day is VERY expensive and the rest is free). My goal is to ski at least 8 times, snowshoe more, ice skate more, cross country ski more -- but you know how that goes, you need snow to play in!

Hi everyone! WELCOME Traxina!
We are just back from a ski trip - 5 days in Switzerland and then 3 days of walking walking walking in Venice. (and some shopping too) Great skiing! So much fun, but now it's getting warmer here and I don't know if I can get a few more days in or not.

I notice too that it's been quiet here...
I was absent from this team and skiing since my husband had a hip surgery in January and we most likely won't go on our ski trips this season. We went twice in November and December but not recently. It wasn't much fun because of the drought this year in the Southwest. So here I am not using my Season Pass. What a year!
How is everybody doing this season?

Jackson was amazing! We were the first flight in after the snow let up -- the whole weekend was bluebird skies with tons of new snow. It was steep, but with all the fluffy stuff, it was perfect. What a great vacation!

We did hook up with this father-daughter team to ski one day... I felt really "behind the power curve" for not being able to keep up with the daughter, until I realized she's 22 and does CrossFit regularly. No wonder she had so many more runs in her legs than I did! Ha!

I like Jackson Hole. The runs are steeper than they look! I found myself having to slow down more than I thought because I didn't realize just how steep some of those blue runs are!

I've always wanted to ski up at Jackson Hole. You'll have to let everyone know what you think of it.

This weekend was good to the Rockies as far as snow goes. I fell on Sunday and felt like I was on clouds - the powder was really deep! emoticon

I also want to tell people to be careful out there - the avalanche danger is real. We had a couple of deaths over the weekend (not just skiers... snowmobiles too) in CO. One was a black inbounds run so please, please be careful. This is a fun sport but people often forget that it's very dangerous too...

I don't know about Big Sky resort, but parts of the state got quite a bit of snow. I skiied yesterday and it was fantastic! (central montana). I heard Bridger (Bozeman) got 3 inches during the day yesterday, but they are way down as far as the year. Good luck!

My surprise ski trip has changed (first Killington, then Alaska) to now a trip to Jackson Hole! We leave Thursday, so I'm pretty sure this is where we'll actually be going. Plus, I hear the Northwest is getting slammed with snow this week! How's Big Sky? I have a friend heading there this weekend also.

Hubby said Jackson got 3' of new snow in the past couple days. Finally, ski season!

The Rockies got some snow finally but now it's just blowing around. I heard the northeast AND the northwest got hit with snow this week.
How's the snow out on the East Coast, anyone??

We actually got some snow in the high country yesterday when you flew in so maybe your dance helped emoticon

I tried boarding this weekend and I actually enjoyed it. Yes, I spent a lot of time on my butt and knees but when I was actually on my feet, it was fun. But oy... there is soreness in every part of my body (I didn't realize how much I'd be using my pecs to push up onto my feet - feels like I did 500 pushups this weekend!!!)

We did go skiing yesterday, and today my inner thighs are sore and my shoulders are sore. What's with that? I think I was skiing in the back seat (leaning too far back on my skis) and made my shoulders sore.

Nice powder though, my daughter called it "dust on crust"

And I guess I shouldn't be such a snob about the snow. I'm going to be on the bunny hill for a good part of Saturday learning how to snowboard anyway. Anyone have any knee pads I could borrow? I have a feeling I'm going to hurting! But no matter what... I'm going to have a BLAST!

I'm with you, My fingers are crossed & I hope it snows. I have not been skiing once yet this season. With black runs, mogul runs, trees, back bowls & shoots not being open, I'm just not very excited to make the drive & spend the gas money for very little terrain open.

It's 43º out right now, but suppose to get colder and snow by noon! I would really like to go skiing tomorrow!

I would go nuts in Alaska (a lot of people "down" here think people in Alaska are nuts anyway)
with the days being so short in the winter and so long in the summer!

I've never thought about the question of darkness in Alaska for skiing. But hopefully, they have lights so you can get in at least a couple of runs.

We're going the last weekend of the month. BUT -- because there's so little snow here in the East, he changed our tickets and we're going to ALASKA! Woo-hoo! I have never even been to Alaska, so that should be awesome.

Of course, Colorado is always a favorite of ours. I saw Copper got 8" yesterday...

I've read reports that the snow isn't coming for a lot of resorts all across North America so I know I'm not the only one crying about the lack of snow.

But on a good note... they are calling for snow in the Rockies this weekend. Fingers crossed!
I'm not skiing this weekend because my knee is hurting. However, I am resting it so that NEXT weekend, I can go all weekend and learn how to snowboard (eek!!) emoticon

The weather has been bad for skiing up here too. Warm and windy and very little snow. We had snow in October and November, but nothing since Christmas. It's been so warm that everything we had on the ground is gone.

Anybody have decent skiing?

We desperately need some fresh snow up here. Denver proper got about a foot and then the foothills had about two feet and the mountains got... 3 inches. Seriously? It made me so sad to see so little snow up there a couple days ago. Hopefully, January and February will be much better than November and December.

Thanks - glad to be back.

Anyone skiing/boarding over the holidays? I'm trying to go on Christmas Eve but we'll see how that goes. Since I don't have any family around, I don't have anything else to do - might as well ski!
