I hope you are able to get back on your skis next season. I'm sorry to hear your family was ill this winter. Best of luck on your journey!

I want to get back on my skis next season. This is the first season in about 12 years or more that I have not been out skiing even once. My family did not get the memo that winter is a bad time to fall ill. Next season I want to be in a place physically and geographically where I can grab first chair on a snow day.

Here in Garmisch, both the men's and women's world cup has been cancelled due to lack of snow. The Dolomites in Italy have really benefited from the southerly winds and warm air that Europe has had while North America was trapped in cold, cold air for so long. It is finally drizzling here and we are supposed to be getting a big dump on Friday. Finally!

where are you going? Can you report back on snow conditions-it might help our decision making.
It looks like it's quite warm in the alps at the moment, not so good for the snow or the lower resorts.

We'll be in the French alps late March 2014, not sure where yet-it will depend on snow conditions but somewhere with a campsite (we go in our motorhome).

@SUNNY2010 - there is good skiing in Colorado already - it is not great, but between Wolf Creek and A Basin, there are options. Given the big dump they just had, as long as it doesn't melt, the base has begun there. Hopefully this year will indeed mimic last year, as the Sierra's were AMAZING through spring and part of summer. Last year was indeed epic! :)

JRSMITH, thank you! I think you are right that there are better deals on-line vs. ski dazzle. Big decision ahead...

We got the season passes to Mammoth for the 1st time. Naturally, we decided to go over Thanksgiving weekend to start using it. But I am getting to worry since it has been so warm there and only 6" of snow (that's melting already). They are starting to blow but I am hoping for the real deal in 4 weeks.

I too have been to LA ski dazzle, but I have personally found better deals online, especially at the end of the season, but since that does not apply now... ;) Anyway, the show is good if you don't have any passes yet, or if don't have all the passes you want for the season. I went last year to get a deal on some passes to Mammoth, since it isn't covered under my Epic and TRide Pass. Good luck in deciding what to do, and have a great season!

There is some relatively good snow in Colorado right now, BUT it is still causing significant injuries thus far. The positive side is we have not had to start worrying about tree holes or avalanches yet! :)

Does anybody ever go to Ski Shows? We have an annual LA ski dazzle show at the LA convention center. I bought my boots and skis there 15 or 16 years ago. But I haven't been there since. Are the prices for boots really good at Shows like this? Wide selection? I don't remember.

JRSMITH, thank you so much for your input, and also an idea. I will check the website now.
I live in LA county too (Northridge). I know that La Canada's Sport Chalet has a large selection of ski equipment. I will try a pair of Salomon boots there. None of my demo boots in March were Salomon. I should definitely give it a try. Thank you!

And also thank you for reminding us about the first snow skiing. Yes, I skied on Thanksgiving week once, and it was not much fun. This month it's been so warm in SoCal that I am really getting concerned.

I'm in the market for new boots too. I have a small crack at the top of one of them so it's not a big deal now but it will be soon. emoticon
I currently have Saloman but I think I need a change because of my unnaturally large calves. emoticon
The best way for me is to go to a local ski shop (I'm so lucky to live in CO where there are ski shops every 10 miles...) and just try some on to see what will be the best fit.
Good luck in your search Sunny!

@CO_VANESSA & SUNNY2010: Thank you! I am truly looking forward to it :)

Everyone have a safe time. While I do live in Malibu, I work in ski country during the winter, and I must say, we are already having some pretty significant injuries this year. I know you all know the risks of skiing on the early snow, but I just want all of us to have a safe season as well as a fun one :) Thankfully those two things are not mutually exclusive :)

@SUNNY2010 - I don't know where you are, but I found a great boots via Salomon. In fact, once I bought a pair I stuck with them exclusively (not intending to use the same word twice in the same post ;)) Anyway, I buy their brand for both skiing and snowboarding, and they are the only brand I will touch. They have some great sales going on right now at The House Boardshop (online) if you have a place you can go try on boots, and find the pair you want to order. Anyway, good luck in your search for boots :)

JRSMITH775, congratulations! It sounds great!

Here we are again... a new ski season! Some of you have enjoyed it already. emoticon

We are making a short trip on a Thanksgiving weekend, and then going back a few days before Christmas. Can't wait!

And I need new boots. My old ones split in March (plastic got old). I rented demo boots but the 1st pair I rented bruised my legs, so I couldn't tell anymore which pair was a good fit or not. I hope to find a perfect fit on day 1.

Enjoy your new week everybody!

So I just had to get out here and and let everyone know that I got the residency at the nature preserve. Six months in a private cottage to write and reflect in some of God's most beautiful country (intermingled with time at home of course :)) I am very excited, as I move in November 1st. Crazy good day, as I just had my meeting to apply for the slot over coffee today. Woohoo!!! :)

Going to ABasin Friday through Sunday this weekend. Already have the burn, but I am not sure if that is from the climbing or the skiing, as they caused equitable quad burn. Hopefully to fade soon.

I just packed the kayak away for the season and now I am ready for ski season. I'm in Upstate NY. This winter I am hoping to head up to Jay Peak in VT. My sister works there so I can get a free pass. Who doesn't love a free day of skiing?!?! I also have a free pass for Windham that has to be used before Dec 31st. So I am hoping for an early nor'easter to dump some snow. Now I just have to start working the Quads to try and mitigate the burn on those first few ski days.

If you are still in Telluride this weekend - you should try to make it out Wolf Creek. They are opening for this weekend because of the 2-3 feet of snow that fell last night!
And ABasin and Loveland are making their snow now! It's finally getting cold enough!

Yeah - I have been somewhat concerned, as A Basin is heralding mid October, and Breck is already set for 11/11 opening day. I am actually in SW Colorado right now (near TRide), and it is cool at night, but still pretty warm in the day. I am at ~11,500, and my sliding glass window is wide open, and the sun pouring through. Don't know if I will be using the fireplace while I am here though.

I'm hoping so but I'm not holding my breath. It's be unseasonably warm around here. I know the mountains are already dipping into freezing temps at night but we need all the help we can get to keep the snow from melting!!!

I'm not sure how to eliminate the quad burn. But I'm a big fan of the Apres ski in the hot tub with a glass of wine afterwards. That usually helps emoticon

I want to feel strong and not have the quad burn during my first month. I want to get out with my daughter at least ten times and get in at least 40 days for the season. I was able to ski May 1st this year, so I am hoping for at least that late in the season for next. I would also like to get in at least one weekend at Tuckerman's Ravine.

...as far as how I am going to achieve my goal...the following come into play...

1) Epic pass purchased
2) Miscellaneous open ended passes purchased for resorts outside of the Epic group I will visit
3) Four days each week off from work, secondary to my normal schedule, to go wherever, and no need, nor want, to work extra
4) Plenty of surplus set aside for travel expenses for even the longest winter
5) Nobody to tell me I can't go and do as I please

I can't think of anything else I would need to ensure I can ski somewhere at least weekly, and I am looking forward to it. emoticon

Great topic! Loving everyone's goals!

Ok, my goals for this season are:

To continue to improve my core strength - I found this made a big difference last year!

To get to our little hill at least once a week - twice if weather permits :)

To keep up with my kids ;)

To get over a fear that I have of a steep bit on our hill - it's usually a sheet of ice and I creep down it ever so slowly with the family waiting patiently at the end of it. I'd like to coast down that this year without a second thought!

We're planning a trip to Sunday River, Maine (we live in Nova Scotia, Canada). We went last year and managed to ski a lot of hours during our week there. This year I have some runs that I'd like to do that I didn't try last year. Hoping to have the skills to rock those runs!

Football season has begn, which means ski season is not far behind! I'm hoping to really stick to some of the Team Goals this fall, and go into ski season with the strength/endurance to ski hard for a whole day, at the BEGINNING of the season (instead of getting to that point in March)!

I just looked back at my goals from last August and I did pretty well! At the beginning of the season, my DIN did decrease due to my weight loss. Unfortunately, I did not maintain my loss through the season, so my DIN is back to where it started. My goal for next season is to get that DIN right back down to where I had it last year! Another goal was to get in shape for my Level 2 instructor's exam...and I passed! I went to three Professional Ski Instructors of America events this year. Coupled with the one I did last year, I completed all of my examinations and passed with flying colors. I'm so excited! My goal for next year is to begin training for my Level 3 exam, which will probably take several years to complete.

Good season :)

I'd like to improve my mogul technique, I can get down gentle ones (generally upright) but when it gets steep I really struggle (or avoid!)

Okay, here are some thoughts for me....

*Do a good job with the conditioning so I can "hit the ground running" in November.
*Get at least 20 days of skiing in (can I do 25????).
*Increase confidence in the trees.
*Continue working on mogul form--try to go from proficient and efficient to graceful. ;-)

Not sure i can stretch my imagination/motivation that far, I wont be skiing till the end of March, almost a year away. But yes I need to keep at the exercise, I've missed a few weeks recently (walking lots but not anything else) and I now I'm back to running & the gym it seems like hard work. Suspect I should be doing some core work.

Success!!!
I can do up the top clip on my ski boots-they felt tight yesterday but fine today.
I haven't been able to do this since I came back to skiing 8 years ago (after a 20 year gap due to family etc...)
My new jacket is at least 2 sizes smaller than my old one.
It's been worth all the effort jsut for this!

My goal for the end of this current season....hmmmm.....as I have been majorly bitten by the "big-mountain ski bug" (living near Revelstoke, BC...epic...), I have 2 goals...well 3 actually.

#1: session a 10-15 ft cliff (on a powder day)
#2: log at least 40 days on skiis (or 120 solid hours) - so far I'm at about 60 hours
#3: get into the backcountry for some off-piste action (completed!!! Owlhead Mountain, late Jan)

Truly, I need to get into better physical condition. My legs are shot after 3 hours of powder skiing, but I WANT to keep going so badly!! Also, when hitting the backcountry involves some hiking at high altitudes (8000 ft in some cases), I am winded and slightly nauseous by the time I get there. So my first and foremost goal is conditioning.

My biggest and best goal is to have fun, no matter what! Next goal, I would love a ski trip out west to Colorado!

To Marcyna, I love the one to one classes because it really helps you focus and the instructor can catch things you are doing and help you work on the correction right then. If not that then at least try to get in a group class that is your level or even one up so that you are really challenging yourself on improvement! emoticon

That's a great goal Becky! Very specific and attainable.
My goal this season is quit being scaredy cat (and trust in my ability) and ski more blue runs.

You know, I think it just depends on what type of person YOU are. I, personally, like the group classes because a.) it's cheaper and b.) I don't feel like I'm constantly under a microscope. However, you may want the constant attention and feedback. I can see how that would be beneficial to some people.
You know it's a little ironic because I was thinking about taking a class during the early season this year.
Good luck with whichever you decide because I think BOTH are effective!

I'm planning a week in Livigno and I was thinking about some one-to-one ski classes, do you think they're better than group ones????
I had one-to-one as I a teenager and my parents would pay....I totally forgot about effectiveness, can anybody tell me what is better????

I am starting early so I can be in shape for ski season this year! I started focusing on losing weight in June so that I can be ready for conditioning in the fall. I really want my balance to be better so I can train for my ski instructor level 2 exam. My DIN last year was 9 but if I can lose a bit of weight, I can get it down to 8 or 7.5 :)

Sorry I'm joining late. I've been MIA for a while.

I want to feel confident and like I have stamina for backcountry skiing. I'd like to build up some speed on the up too. I think losing weight and working on other uphill activities (mountain biking, hiking, trail running) should help. As well as getting started early.

Looking forward to the conditioning challenges and the 70s ski suit.

Conditioning in Sept sounds great.

My goals for next season are to get out at least once a month. I wish I could go more but we just aren't close enough.

And I would like to get my confidence up to get into the pipe. Nothing fancy - just some 180s or 360s in the air and then come back down and not kill myself!

Also I would kind of like to figure out how to ride a rail :)

I know that many of us aren't thinking a lot about skiing in say, July, but maybe we should start some conditioning challenges in September or thereabouts?

Thank you for asking this question-it's something I need to think about.
I'd like to be as fit and ideally have lost more pounds by next year so I can tackle more difficult runs (steeper moguls are my next challenge I think).
I'd really like by ski wear to be so baggy that I have to buy new!
At the moment I've lost my focus on eating sensibly but I am exercising again... just need to get back on track so I can acheive all this.

I absolutely agree with you that all runs are not created equal. I went to Holiday Valley NY this year and did my first true black diamond there and very pleased that I did not fall. However, some of the blue runs were just as challenging and I really questioned the subjective criterion for what's blue and what's black. For all my ski friends, though, they really feel you haven't skied until you've skied "out west" so that's my goal!!

Jill,
I absolutely agree on the practice thing. As for the 'one black run out west' I was shocked to find that all mountains are NOT created equal. Sun Valley green runs are the easiest runs at Sun Valley but rather 'blue' in spots!

I made my goal for this season of making it down a mogul run without stopping, but of course I was DEAD each time I did it. ;-)

I'm really LOL here. I want to go on a ski trip "out west" and do at least one good black run there. Improving my stamina would be good as well. I do lessons all the time, and they are really beneficial, but sometimes you just have to practice practice practice and that's my plan!!

I want to fit into my snowsuit of 7 years ago, and to ski as I did then without thinking every time I ski to the bottom of the hill "my legs are done, this could be my last run." And I can't wait to take my daughter to higher elevations.
Good topic!
Eatnboogers, I too want to see next year a photo in the 70s snowsuit. How cool to have your mom's suit!

Oh we need a photo of that 70s snowsuit! With you in it of course. I do a lot of step classes and I'm not sure if more workouts in the summer would help the winter for me. It's the going down hill that I have to work into.

I want to fit into my mom's 70s snowsuit better for Retro Day at the end of the season. (I'd like to pole plant better, too.) I'd like to really work on conditioning over the summer so I can hit the ground running in November.

Have my ski jacket slide over my hips more easily- I need to lose about 7 lbs. and KEEP THEM OFF!

Pole plant better- for that I believe I will need a lesson

Do more black runs- perhaps drinking would help here? emoticon
