I still haven't found a new one yet, but I'm looking. I'm actually going skiing tomorrow for the first time since my concussion, and I'm going to take the old helmet. I don't feel great about that, but considering that I'm a really good skier and that I got the concussion as a beginner snowboarder, I think I'll be okay. I will likely be spending the entire day on greens with my 3 year old. :-)

Many of my boarding friends wear wrist braces to protect from falls. The incidence of wrist injury for boarders is pretty high so I would definitel recommend that. Trying a helmet on was key for me. I would be unwilling to get one without trying it first. I ordered goggles online this year, but only after trying them on at the store and knowing which one I wanted. Then I went on ebay and purchased them for 75% less than the retailer. Happy Day on that!! emoticon

My first helmet was a bad fit and it didn't stay on during an accident where someone crashed into me from behind. I now recommend always trying on a helmet to ensure a good fit.

I try on gear when I'm at stores to get an idea of fit/sizing/comfort/gadgets. I use the Notes section on my phone to track how things run and what size/models I would buy.

I don't wear any other safety gear, but I also don't snowboard.

I'll check those out--thanks! Do you worry at all about fit when you're buying online? Is there a safety rating you prefer? I have a pretty big head, and there are apparently some sales going on locally, but stock is limited.

Does anyone wear any other safety gear for skiing and/or snowboarding? My snowboarding buddy wears padded shorts and wrist guards. I'm still most worried about the head. Not sure I'll resume snowboarding unless I can convince myself that I can either learn to fall more safely and/or protect my head better some other way.

I'm a bargain hunter and tend to buy helmets when I see them on the cheap. I have great luck with a few sites online.

My two favorites show 1 item at a time for about 30 minutes, so you have to kind of keep your eyes peeled, but I have found great deals on last season's gear.

www.tramdock.com has ski gear including skis, helmets and goggles.

www.steepandcheap.com offers more general outdoor gear.

www.brociety.com has snowboarding things and I have found bargain basement prices on goggles and sunglasses more than once.

Hey y'all--some of you know that I got a concussion Monday while snowboarding (and while wearing a helmet). I need to replace my helmet, and I thought that maybe if anyone has any resources about helmets and other safety gear, we could gather that info in one place.

(And I'm sure that if I hadn't been wearing a helmet, my head injury would have been much, much worse.)
