LOL That's funny - you see, WINTER is my off season. emoticon

I'm primarily a white water kayaker and road cyclist.

When winter comes and I can't find people to ride or paddle with because they're chicken of the cold, I have to XC ski with buddies and ice skate. I'm going to try snowboarding this year and see if my arthritic knee can handle it (can't do downhill, unfortunately).

Never, ever, EVER give up!

From BMI 53 (336 lbs) to under 30. Now aiming for less than 20% body fat.

I'm recovering from some over use injuries in my running. I'm finally ready to start running more than 3 mi at once next week. I've been introducing swimming over the last 6 weeks and now I'm introducing strength training to my routine.

I've seen folks do the Nordic walking - that's got to be a great way to keep in shape in the offseason.
And yes, Golf counts because.... ummm....OH - it keeps your obliques and back in good condition! Not to mention all that walking.

I think people just have to find what they love to do - no matter the season. Yes, we all here love to ski or board when it's available to us. But you know, I love mountain biking almost as much so I do that the other half of the year!

I practice Nordic walking (good alternative to cross-country skiing), water aerobics, golf (not sure it helps for skiing!)...

I have saved some videos on Youtube: Strength training for skiers; and DH and I are doing them to stay in shape and be ready.

Mostly tennis and working out on the elliptical machine. Oh, and a half dozen hikes - great for the legs.

I honestly haven't done much in the off season. My sister is currently in Chile skiing so it is getting me thinking about stepping up my game now

Hi Sunny. The tennis is going well. I am planning to sign up for a few lessons to improve, but it is amazing what a stamina builder it is. The exertion of tennis is quite different from skiing, but I feel they mix well together as far as training and using some of the same big muscle groups. I do get out of breath, though, for sure!

Jillwilson, good luck with tennis! I hope you will get a reply regarding shoes, raquets, etc. I am planning to re-introduce tennis to myself also (it's among my goals), but I need to get somewhat fit first. It's so great to think about this activity again, isn't it?

We camp and hike alot throug the summer.
This summer I want to get back on my bike and do some cross country.

Also this summer I am trying to get myself out walking a lot and am looking for a 5km in July and will do the 5km Terry Fox run in sept. I walk though and not run because I have some hardwear inmy knee and it kills to run. So I just need to speed walk!

I'm going to take up tennis. Does anyone have any suggestions for raquets, shoes, etc. I have not played at all since high school (30 years ago emoticon ) but played competitively then. I have no idea what's ideal anymore. emoticon

I panic. I mourn. I tune my gear and get everthing clean and stored for next season. I read old ski magazines. I look at hills and try to 'pick my line'.

I wait.

Oh! You mean for fitness! I hike and walk and focus on strength training like squats, lunges and core work.

Start with running and then add in hiking and mountain biking as the mountains dry up. maybe I'll add road biking to the mix this year.

We start running. Normally hike during summer , in mid-season , as we normally go skiing until April/May.....then alpine walking, hiking ,hitting the gym, everything to keep fit. emoticon

Sad to say that it IS the off season now. i thought I would get out one more time. Last year the weather was horrid I gained weight. After getting stronger over the winter I don't plan on letting things slide. We do quite a few water sports. I find skiing to be the best but I enjoy swimming, kayaking and biking in the summer as well. I have my scuba certification but I am a beginning diver and have not gotten hooked up with any groups in our area.

Hi Jill! I know it's certainly getting nicer which I am very grateful for but I also miss heading to the mountain and boarding!!! I thought my broken ribs would be healed in time to catch the end of the season but it's not looking that way! Oh well, next season!!
So now that it's nice, I love to go running outside!! I also attend a weekly running club that is a crazy blast! We meet at the pub, run approx. 3 miles then meet back at the pub to "drink" and socialize, just a great group of people!! I also teach a turbokick class which is the gym version of turbojam. That is, when my ribs arent broken!!
Hope that helps a little!
Have a super day!
Sharon

I am really missing skiing, since the warmer weather has kicked in. What do you typically do in the off season to stay in shape?
