We had what will likely be our last day of the season yesterday. Dh and I headed up to Arapahoe Basin for a kid-free day. I'll try to write a blog post about it--it was really phenomenal, great way to finish the season. But I'm sad that my season is likely over.

EATNBOOGERS It's great that your kids are skiing so well. That investment in teaching the little one has paid off.

We got a good bit of snow weekend before last and last Tuesday. I headed to The Canyons (free passes) Wednesday. We got some great powder runs when they opened up new terrain.

By the afternoon most of the ungroomed runs were mash potatoes or cement/crud. It was quite the workout getting used to new conditions, but I tried to leave my snow snobbery behind and embrace the snow gift:)

It *was* a really great day. My boys are all about the black runs now, and we've kind of held them back on the double blacks (with good reason--they need to work more on their parallel skiing). But they are totally all about trees and bumps. :-O They'll keep me on my toes as I get older. ;-)

Okay, last day at Eldora. I was super happy because my 3 year old is skiing blues now, so our parking situation will be easier next year. We had a few runs as a family (me, my husband, and the 3 kids), and that was a lot of fun--I feel like we've worked so hard with all of them, and they've come a long way. It's a lot of fun skiing with them, and I'm glad they enjoy it so much. My last couple of runs were the under-the-ski-lift black diamond runs with the boys. There were lots of crazy shirtless people (pantless, too) :-O and they were shouting "awesome, kid!" at my 5 yr old especially, and "rock on, mama!" to me. ;-)

I'm just to envious of you who live in the snowy places. The daffodils have sprung here and there is no snow. Not that I don't look forward to spring and warmer temps, open windows and birds chirping, but...I miss my skiing. emoticon Enjoy your bliss! emoticon

Dh had a sunny (and slushy) day at Eldora today. The family will have one last day on Sunday--closing day. Next Tuesday, dh and I are going to use (up) some passes at A Basin. And I think that will be it for the season for us. :-\

Our local resort closed recently. It's been snowing every since. We had one of the best ski days of the whole season last Saturday. You just had to find your own way to the top.

I'm headed to a Park City resort tomorrow, we're in the middle of a great storm cycle.

Had an *awesome* day today. I skied with the boys while dh worked with the 3 year old. There was fresh powder, and we were working on that, stem christie, and moguls. Everyone was in high spirits. Hoping maybe to get a day mid-week this week.

It hasn't been the best snow year for us. We're (Beaver Mountain)doing worse than the other UT resorts that are struggling too. We had 5" new on Saturday morning and it felt like Christmas. We took our first run down a shot that gets groomed about 2x per week, so it was smooth underneath with powder on top. Simply devine. Then we hit the northfacing trees for most of the rest of the day, getting powder all day long. The sunny slopes turned to spring corn mind-morning, for the spring skiier's delight.

Sunday I went backcountry skiing. We were able to get first tracks down a north facing treed slope that was still holding nice power. It was turning a bit mushy by 1:00 though.

I'm on pins and needles this week. We've got a storm coming in. It could be snow or rain in the mountains. Snow may make some of the best skiing we've had this winter. Rain will kill the snow pack for skiing and make the summer drought we're headed toward even worse.

Crossing my fingers.

I'd like a high-speed lift, too, but I guess I shouldn't complain... my ski area is very nearby, the lines are short, and the price is right. (But heated seats.... ah.)

Ditto on the heated chairlifts. I've been wishing for those for those a bit this season. Though, I'd settle for a highspeed quad at my local resort.

A bit late, but two weeks ago we went to Flachau/Austria (Salzburger Sportwelt) to meet up with friends, who were skiing there for a week.

http://www.bergfex.com/flachau/

It was the first Saturday of the week-long Bavarian "February ski vacation" (isn't that great, ski vacation from school) and there were traffic jams on all the Autobahns heading toward the mountains, especially between Munich and Innsbruck. We even thought we might get there too late to go skiing, but luckily it all cleared up after Salzburg.

The weather and snow were just perfect. The slopes were not too difficult and very well-groomed. The heated chairlift seats were very nice, I think I can get used to that. emoticon

My friend was a bit scared to ski too fast. I followed behind her very slowly and realized that that's much harder than skiing fast!! It really gave my thighs a good workout.

We skied at our local ski area yesterday. We've had a lot of regular snow in the last week, and the conditions were great.

I worked with my 3 year old, and she is doing *so* well. (Here's where I start bragging.) She can ride the tow rope all by herself. We ride the chair lift together, too (except I have to lift her up to get her on the seat!) She's skiing down the bunny slope all by herself--no help at all. She's the smallest solo skier I have ever seen. :-) She's super full of attitude, too, which is kind of fun. We had a great day.

It's amazing to hear from people skiing all over. I did got away from my little family run home mountain on Saturday and went down to Snowbasin.

My boyfriend was excited about all of the gnarly terrain, so we pushed it pretty hard most of the day. I even got tricked into doing my first chute (a short one).

My knees were aching before my first run on the home turf this morning. But how can I complain? Guess I'll get some more stretching in tonight.

Snow's surprisingly good here, given that the snowfall has been so weak.

Happy skiing to everyone. Wishing you all good snow!

Just back from 8 days skiing in Alp d'Huez (France). Wonderful week-I was so much fitter this year-carrying less weight really helps and I started jogging this year which I think has made a difference.
Sadly no more skiing for another year-so jealous of those of you near the mountains!

Well this weekend we checked out a "new" ski area. New to us. We live in the northern prairies so the areas that are around us are esentially river valleys, or foothills on the edge of lakes. A far cry from the Mountains I grew up in and worked most of my life at. Anyway, it's called Long lake Ski Area just outside of Biyle ALberta. It has one t-bar and one rope tow! Short runs, but was relatively well groomed, except the lift line. Not sure what was happening there but it was totally rutted out.
My daughter (4yr) had a good time in a private lesson on the rope tow. It was way steeper than a beginner run should be so she didn't get too many practice turns in but she enjoyed it. My husband and I made about 10 runs.
All in all it was ok, we won't go back but at least we can say we tried it! Two more trips are planned, Rabbitt Hill, just outside Edmonton (Rivervalley skiing) and Fernie Alpine Resort (MOUNTAINS!!!!!)

The snow gods on this side of the Atlantic also seem pleased emoticon . We got another 8 inches, but were only expecting a dusting. And it's still snowing lightly. Tomorrow we're heading out to the slopes in Flachau/Austria (not far from Salzburg) to meet up with friends. I've never been there before, but it looks interesting.

Planning a day trip to a local hill - looks like it is still 1.5 hrs away. 1 t-bar and a rope tow! Not sure how my daughter will take to the rope tow - she is booked in for a 1.5hr lesson. This will give my husband and I some quick runs - mostly likely will be able to tour the whole hill in that time!

I have not skied as much as I would have like this year do to goofy weather here in Ohio (even tho I live 6 miles from ski area). But I am so looking forwards to going to Snowshoe at the end of the month. I may go today after I go get my car back home. After all I can't let 12 inches of snow go to waste....

Sounds like winter's in full force bringing the snow we all love.

Last weekend I was in Park City. Saturday we went backcoutnry skiing in between two resorts. The avalanche danger was considerable, so we skiied open low angle slopes, called meadow skipping. When we started there was this lovely untracked meadow. When we were done, it almost looked as skiied out as a resort. It was a ton of fun. Lots of exercise from skinning up and then an easy float down.

Sunday we wake up and get going late, check the weather and realize, "It's a powder day!" We were thinking we'd get a couple of inches and got about 8. So we headed over to Deer Valley where everyone likes to ski the groomers and took advantage of lovely trees and ungroomed blacks. My legs are finally tuned up for the season.

Finally got my cross country skis down from storage in the garage and took them for a spin yesterday. Just a short ski, 30 minutes, but it was lovely. Peaceful and we had a tiny bit of new snow (about 5cm I think). The trackset tracks were still visiable, but not icey which is always nice.

1.5 weeks until our ski vacation. Man I miss living close to the mountains and being able to ski whenever we want!

We've gotten tons of snow this past week in Utah. I went to Solitude on Friday because I had a cousin in town. He's afraid of powder, so we took it slow. I did get to venture out on my own in the afternoon. Found a nice stash of pow on an out of the way blue/black. Then did laps on a tracked out black to work the legs.

The next two days have been an avalanche certification course in Logan. It's a good time for it because the avalanche danger is so high. Lots of triggered avalanches, some near misses, burials and now a fatality within 3 days. Spread the word: Get avalanche awareness or stay in bounds.

It seems like it has snowed everywhere else in the country but here. :-( It's snowing in SW CO right now, but that's not doing me any good. ;-P We're not going to be able to ski this weekend, anyway, so I guess it's okay.

Cool! NE as in New England? I thought you guys got 33 inches or something like that? We are finally getting some snow and I'm hoping it makes a difference...

Yah! We got some new emoticons!

emoticon emoticon

Now,if we can just get some s~n~o~w emoticon here in the NE that would be great. After breaking my wrist in November I want to emoticon ski in GOOD conditions so when/if I fall it is not on ice!

I didn't downhill ski this past weekend. I went out for a short cross country tour on Saturday, which was fine. I just couldn't motivate on Sunday for downhill or backcountry. It was bright and sunny and two weeks since the last snow.

It's finally coming to N Utah in this week though. We're starting to get moderate snow this week and should get some nice dumps next week. I'm headed to Solitude on Friday and a two day avalanche class in the backcountry over the weekend.

Goodluck with teach the kids EATNBOOGERS. There's a big pay off when you can spend days skiing with them.

I'm sorry to hear the snow wasn't great at Sun Valley, sounds like a nice resort though.

Pray for snow.

I was at Sun Valley over the weekend. Unfortunately the levels of snow were similar to Northern UT if not worse emoticon The slopes were EMPTY though! That was nice. The slopes are much LONGER than what I am used in UT. There are a number of cat tracks but the main slopes just keep going and going and going... They were very wide which I liked. Some of the top of the mountain had very granular snow- like ball bearings emoticon That I did NOT like. We did not have to pay for lift tickets- they were included as part of our season passes to Snowbasin. At $85 a pop I would have been really disappointed if I had paid for a pass (or 4 since the family went). Tonight we are getting rain at home emoticon Hopefully it is snow on the mountain- this season is not very good so far!

Not the best day today (but of course, not the worst, either, because I was skiing). ;-) Worked with the 3 yr old this morning, and she was such a turkey. She didn't want to do anything for me. I carried her back to the car, gave her a snack, and read a few pages of my book. (*I* was trying to chill out in order to not go to Bad Mommy Land.) In the afternoon, I worked with the boys, while my husband worked with the 3 yr old. I'm working on stem christie with the 8 yr old, and he was doing great! The 5 yr old developed cold hands very suddenly at 3:30, though, and then we were done, done, done. (I was frustrated, because basically, he burst into tears with no warning.) We ran into friends in the lodge, though. Now I'm back and stretching and eating some soup. :-)

We're doing okay here for snow. (I ski mostly at Eldora in Colorado.) Hoping to get out this weekend! :-)

I think it would be fun to have a thread about our ski outings.

I blogged about a recent backcountry trip here: www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_jo

The snow in Northern Utah has been pretty disappointing this year. We were still dodging buried objects, that and dealing with backcountry skiings' favorite gifts: death crust. But we found some nice powder in the trees and I've learned to enjoy the climb up enough that I don't mind that once we're going back down the conditions aren't great.
