Ohh I wish I could ski weekday mornings =/

Mountain biking seems to be a pretty popular out of season pass time for skiers, seems like half of the worlds skiers are also into throwing themselves down the same mountains on a bike as well

I think it is the speed ;p

I have GOT to get moving on my summer stuff right away... I'm already feeling the funk coming on.

I sure do love skiing weekday mornings to get the blood flowing.... and I sure do miss that now.

Boo. Remind me to go buy a bike or something.

My summer activites consist of running, hiking, walking and cycling (though I run throughout the year). This year I've taken up geocaching too!

Go to coolrunning.com and check out some of their articles. They have "new to running" type articles, and this is where the Couch to 5K training schedule can be found.

I love the idea of tackling the Fat Tire, when it's something I've read about and thought just other people did...

however, it's overwhelming for me to even think about where to even start with training and prep.

One thing at a time for me... maybe next summer. :)

I loved Boulder when I was there. Heck, I loved Denver...

sometimes I think I am in the wrong state.

I'm in South Denver. But I get up to Boulder frequently as I've family there. Check out the Bicycle Village Saturday group rides. My ladies group from down here will be joining those on a few days.

It's kinda sick and twisted isn't it? Actually, my final event of the season is the Buffalo Bike Classic century ride so I'll get plenty of riding in. Oh, and my ladies ride group will do a lot of riding this summer. What area of Colorado are you in?

Man, I was *afraid* you'd say that. So biking is your fave and what you're best at, and training for a tri means you get to do less of the good stuff and more of the not as good stuff. ;-)

So, for me right now cycling is my strength so I'm focusing more time on swim and run. Swim is slow but I survive it, run it really my challenge. So, right now I'm at 3x per week run, 2-3x per week swim and 1x per week bike. Trying to get a strength in there somewhere. Oh, and still some skiing.

Okay, you're my hero in the sense that you're already doing things that I would like to do. :-)

I actually do a fair amount of biking, too, though it's not necessarily as "purposeful" as my running (ie, I usually ride as fast and hard as I can, because I'm trying to get somewhere, but my biking is generally riding to meetings, or picking up or taking my kids somewhere--and I often have a trail-a-bike and/or a bike trailer behind me). My swimming is weak. Biomechanically, I'm not set up well foot-wise (I have really high arches and extra bones in my feet), so I know that there's a limit to how much running I can really do, which is why tris are on my mind.

If one of the 3 types of activity is your weakness (and another is your strength), what do you do about that in training?

Eek, the idea of being anyone's here freaks me out. I am by no means perfect. Not even close.

But, I love training for triathlon. One of the things that is so great about it is the variety. Instead of always doing just one type of exercise I switch it up which keeps my body guessing and keeps me from getting bored. I am doing the Danskin SheRox tri on June 28th. Another great event is the My Way or the Tri Way on July 25th. www.beginertriathlete.com has some great beginner plans. Basically choosing either 2x per week for each event or 3x per week for each for 16-20 weeks. Looking at your profile it looks like you're way ahead on your running at least so you'd be in a good spot to start. I will be doing a slooooowwwwww BB because my running is a weak spot for me.

What else can I answer for you.

Ooh, Robyn, you're my hero. Are you in CO? I've thought about doing a sprint length tri after the BB. Do you mind expounding on that?

A lot of swim/bike/run/strength workouts. My weekly training schedule, once ski season is mostly over in a couple of weeks will contain approximately 3x run, 3x swim, 2x bike (excluding any commuting I do by bike), 2x strength. Distances, intensity etc TBD by my tri coach and I depending on progress. My 2 "A" races are the Danskin SheRox sprint tri on June 28th and the Rattlesnake olympic tri on August 15th (this depends on whether some nagging pains subside after ski season ends).

I found last year after entering my first event, the Fat Tire Classic in Winter Park, that the endorphins of these races really motivate me. I really want more after each one so signing up and pushing myself helps. I've not lost a lot of the weight but I'm in better shape now than I've ever been. I just finished a 3.5 hour spin-a-thon on Sunday which I couldn't have done a year ago.

To take this back to skiing, when I got on snow this past November I couldn't believe the difference in my skiing. I nearly toppled myself as I powered through crud because my legs were so much stronger and I was lighter than I used to be. My friends laughed at me! But in a good way.

I will be doing the Bolder Boulder as well and plan 1 sprint tri, 1 olympic tri, a 5k and a century bike ride. Maybe an aquabike duathlon. I'll be plenty busy I think.

It's been mentioned to me that I get pretty freaked out when the snow melts. I just don't do as well with heat and bugs and dirt and I never want to get sweaty outside. I'm a cold weather girl.

The goal for this year is tackling hiking trails as well as to start mountain biking again. I have a HUGE garden, but I don't spend as much time in it as I should as my boyfriends mom usually gets to it before I get out there.

I do think we should do challenges that switch every 2 weeks or so. Maybe one week focus on Cardio, the next on leg strength. We can mix up our exercises and cheer each other on.

You guys let me know and we can put them right into the Team Goals!

I feel darned lucky I get to ski frequently, that's for sure. And I do like to hike, but... well, it's not the same. :-)

I *am* thinking about maybe training for a sprint-length tri after the Bolder Boulder. My swimming sucks, though. A friend knows of a very good instructor for adults (someone who helps get all the kinks out of one's strokes, apparently), and I'd need some of that before even seriously considering it. (I am ssllllooooow in the pool.) Seems much easier on my joints than training for a 1/2 marathon, which is the other thing I'm considering for after the 10K.

I go back to the same mountains and hike them. No, it's not the same type of exercise but it keeps me going (and it's cheaper). Through the winter (and summer) I hit the weight machines at the gym and go to step class. The summer also allows me to get water aerobics in. At the ski resort that I go to they rent mountain bikes in the summer and you can take the gondola up and ride the bike down. I haven't tried it yet but maybe this summer.

As for a challenge for the summer perhaps a certain amount of aerobic every week along with skater squats, step and some weights?

First of all, I'm so envious that you live in CO and get to ski so much. What a fun activity and a great way to burn calories...and it's a great family activity, too. I only went snowboarding for 2 days this winter, and didn't ski at all, which is truly my passion. MN just doesn't have any mountains!
But...in the summer, I do get to water ski which is a huge adrenaline rush for me, and helps to tone my upper body like nothing else.
Also, I would consider taking up triathlons in the off season. It sounds like you're already working on your running, and you already bike, all you need to do is add swimming into your workout routine (perfect activity in the summer), and you'll be all set to tackle a triathlon. I have made great friends and found wonderful support in my local triathlon community, and there's also a few great SparkPeople triathlon groups to offer support and advice as well.
Once you "tri" one, you'll be hooked!

So this is my first winter in eons really *SKIING*, and I have to admit that I'm a little freaked out about the season coming to an end soon. I was wondering what y'all (and this team and its challenge) will do for fitness to replace skiing/cross-train for next season during the summer. I'll be doing a lot of gardening and hiking, but somehow, it doesn't seem the same.

(Can we come up with some fun challenges to tide us over?)
