Our school district has different tracks for districts that are more crowded, so they go year long, in shifts. One year they decided that all the kids should go year long--be fair--and it was a complete disaster. I think it lasted one year.

seriously - where DID July go! School starts here on Aug 22.

I always feel sorry for the kids - even though I know the parents can't wait. Child care concerns, stir crazy concerns. And since we don't run on a agricultural calendar anymore, there's no reason why school can't be year round - I just feel sorry for the kids. The rest of life has no summer-long vacatons, why should kids have to give it up.

Oh well, I'm glad I'm out of the game.

STarted doing Sun Salutations yesterday - feels good!

It was up a little today but still in a very good place. I do take meds for the B/P, but as I said, it just jumped last fall, and I know that last year I started eating bread__ whole wheat, of course--more often.

Barbara, interesting about the blood pressure! I will be fascinated to know if you can make a link to the wheat. My bp went up a couple years ago and I take meds to keep it under control, but wow - if I can control it by eliminating wheat, I am all for it!

Nancy. sorry about your son. UTIs are so painful!

I got myself an eyepatch yesterday. Very annoying, but much better than seeing double which is extraordinarily disorienting! Gonna take it easy today while I kind of get used to this no depth perception thing. That means I'll be staying OFF the second floor porch. I need to get some steps in, but I think it can wait a day.

Sometimes the NSVs make the change worthwhile even when they don't show on the scales. I am working really hard and had a great workout today. Spent 7 hours in the pool and felt like I really did a good job. My son, Ed has been not feeling well all weekend so today he went to the doctor. He probably has a UTI or bladder infection and started on antibiotics but won't know for sure until the lab work comes back. It has pretty classic indicators so it is probably one or the other. He doesn't do SICK and in pain very gracefully, but he does do it in style - LOL - since someone mentioned MEN.

With love and caring from Nancy ... wishing all of you a wonderful, blessed, and precious day.

Well, I strayed from the no wheat thing yesterday, but other than that, I have been good for a week. I haven't really lost any weight, but I do feel as though the scale has creeped into the lower part of my usual range, and the thing that I am excited about--my blood pressure has been lower for a week. My B/P jumped up (still not bad but high for what it had been) last fall, and last week was the first full week that it was in a range that I was satisfied with. Hmmmm. If not eating wheat was responsible for that, and it continues, I will make more of an effort.

And then there are men, LOL. 'Gee, I have to lose 10 pounds' and next thing you know, they have! So not fair!

I'm down another 1/2 pound this morning, YAY! That means ONE pound to go to get to pre pred weight. Hope and pray I will not have to do another round of it. And then again I hope I don't have to do anything worse.

Should be a beautiful day - enjoy it!

You mention that things that were true when we were younger no longer work - I used to JUST switch my drinks to WATER (no soda, milk, juices, Kool-aid, etc.) and drop 10 pounds in about 10 days. No longer works because I ONLY drink water and have for YEARS now - not a good swap any more for ME but works great for others. There are a dozen other things that used to be an easy weight loss formula BUT . . . since I have made many of those changes simply part of my life, it really is MUCH harder to lose now - but I AM working on it diligently.

Hope everyone has a fabulous week ahead

With love and caring from Nancy ... wishing all of you a wonderful, blessed, and precious day.

And you hit on a good point--things that were true when we were younger no longer work!! 7 pounds in a week is pretty huge, but I know that eating less used to work for me, and it is not as effective anymore.

It is a week today with the no wheat (except for my tiny piece of cake on Friday!) and I don't feel anything, although I am beginning to think that I am having milder cravings....we shall see.

Sunday morning - gorgeous!

Nancy, I noticed your posted weight loss - Congratulations! You are well on your way to making your birthday goal with room to spare!

Would be nice if there were some kind of analysis on our bodies that could tell us - for real - to make the kind of changes like you are experimenting with - good luck on that. I've been trying to make my lunch be my bigger meal and then just have something very light for dinner. But my biggest successes come when I severely restrict the starchy carbs. Even when I was in high school, over Easter break, I quit eating bread, noodles, pasta, etc. If I wanted a pbj, I ate it off a spoon! I could always count on losing about 7 pounds in a week back then. I should be so lucky now....

Barbara, if you have success limiting the wheat (and the chocolate) and feel better in the process - you've learned something about your body! Who knows, it might be easier than you think to stick with it!

I am going to try to walk up to the drugstore today to get an eyepatch - I'm thinking it might be easier to look at things.

Have a great day

Here Comes the Sun!

So often we need to do something drastic in order to make things start to click. I have found that except lunchtime breads, I do better without either bread or pastas. It wasn't easy to make the change but I am reaping the benefits. Timing seems to be a BIT deal for me - dinner carbs are harder to get rid of in terms of my blood sugar. Lunch carbs get used quickly when I exercise for a LONG stretch. So, I have started really playing with the timing of my foods.

With love and caring from Nancy ... wishing all of you a wonderful, blessed, and precious day.

I don't think that this will become a way of life for me, but if I feel that it is beneficial, I will definitely try to continue with minimal intake of wheat products. I had a sliver of cake yesterday at mah jongg, and actually put my hand out to take some M & M's and pulled back. Refusing chocolate is major for me. Maybe it is working.....

Jumpup - sorry you are having that problem with your vision

Barbara - your eating sounds pretty balanced and it may well work for you. It is not much different from mine except that I eat a little whole grains that include some wheat. I eat very little pasta or breads except at lunch when I have my peanut butter sandwiches.

Raining gently here today

Sat morning - rainy

Thanks Barbara - the typing is done with one eye closes and many backspaces, LOL!

Your way of eating sounds very good - and similar to mine, lean protein and fruit or veg. I have cut out almost all starches for the time being - except for the plate of pasta I had last night. And I have a little bit of Post Great Grains mixed in with nuts and seeds and raw oats stirred into my fruit and yogurt every morning.

Must be working - I'm down another 1/2 pound, making it 1 1/2 to go before I am at pre-pred weight. YAY!!!

Enjoy your desert and mahjjong!

Jumpup, I am so sorry to hear that you are experiencing this. You type very well for someone with double vision!

I don't do "diets" per se--the plan of this program is to eliminate all wheat and wheat products from your diet. That isn't a huge stretch for me, but it requires some care. I am breaking it today because I have my mah jongg game and part of the day is lunch with a dessert brought by one of the ladies. Today is the best baker among us, so I will have a sliver. The main thing that I have not been able to have is my bowl of Cheerios in the evening!!

I like very simple food, so I haven't had much adjustment there. I make myself a green salad every night, with vinegar and oil as the dressing. Last night I pan-fried (non-stick pan) a ground turkey patty and some onions, added a spoon or two of diced tomatoes and let it cook. Tonight I think it is going to be swai (a fish similar to tilapia) and some kind of vegetable.

I'm pretty good about eating the produce I buy. On those rare occasions when I do end up with something bad, it goes in my compost bin in the backyard.

Friday morning 2am

Barbara, tell us what you are eating? Give us a couple sample menus? Are your meals tasty and delicious? Easy to prepare?

(and don't you hate it when you overbuy the produce and end up throwing out a couple ribs of celery, half a head of lettuce, or my personal fave - the half cucumber that has turned into a sea slug.

I've got broccoli and peppers waiting to be processed in my fridge as we speak - if I don't get to it today, I'm afraid the peppers are history.

Woke up two days ago with double vision, which was the second symptom I had when we found out I have this growth in my head. Yesterday it was worse (so forgive typos, lol) and I got in to see my neurologist - what a great doc to fit me in immediately like that.

I was within 3 weeks of being off the prednisone entirely, but apparently, the mass started to grow again at this low dosage. So that's in a holding pattern. I have to have another set of MRIs done in two weeks and see the neurosurgeon about biopsy.

As the doc says, it is a little bit of a dilemma. Gotta have enough mass to cut, but not so much it damages my vision permanently. Which means I get to have double vision for quite some time. Timing on this one is going to be everything, pray I get it right.

This is very disorienting and riding in a car (not gonna be driving -you're welcome) makes me a little seasick. Gotta close one eye to go down stairs and then I lose depth perception. Cant actually do too much, and forget playing with knives! I'm glad the broc and peppers are already cut up!

But I can do my push ups! And I held a modified plank for 17 seconds yesterday. (I think - it might have been 8.5 or 34, depending on which clock face I checked, LOL! - a little double vision humor there. I know, VERY little.)

A little afraid to do cardio, unless I just march in place for a bit. I'm afraid to misstep outside. I'm on a roll, though - lost another 1/2 pound, so I'm determined to do something!

Have a great day

Here Comes the Sun!

I am still being good with this no wheat thing. A friend of mine says I have to give it a month to see results, but the doctor claims that it shouldn't take that long. I need some shoring up if I am going to be able to keep it up!

The book was incredibly dense with science, but it was interesting nonetheless, and made sense to me.

I did my grocery shopping today as usual, and I have a fridge loaded with gorgeous produce. I may have overdone it, everything looked so good.

This has NOT been the summer to have your A/C out - so glad you got it back again!

Here, today, feels more like heat mode though, LOL! I am dressed like it's fall! Long sleeves, long pants - it's around 70, actually glorioius, but the breezes are almost cold!

Got my 3 sets of pushups (still on the sink) in by noon today. Gonna roll out my yoga mat and see how long I can hold a modified plank - that will be my next step to getting those pushups down on the floor where they belong!

Barbara, very interesting point about the changes in wheat from then to now- definitely something to consider.

Have a great day

GOT MY A/C back finally - it has been out since end of April/beginning of May (heat also and since in early May we had days in the 30s at night, it wasn't fun either) Today was cooler but with the A/C back I am just plain happy HAPPY HAPPY.

Good afternoon, friends. I was travelling for nearly a week. For some reason, I thought I would be able to stay in control while travelling. And in some ways I did; I exercised, and I tracked some of my food. I didn't make the healthiest of food choices though, so I wasn't as "in control" as I thought I would be. I'm back home today. I'm on strictly clear liquids today, as I'm going in for a medical procedure tomorrow, and this is part of the prep. I'm looking forward to having this all over so I can get back into some semblance of a routine in my life. I joined a team (or challenge, or whatever it's called) this morning to get in at least 10 minutes of exercise 5 out of every 7 days. I haven't gotten today's in yet. I feel like I'm in a fog from all that driving the past couple of days. Maybe an afternoon nap will help.

NancyPat, great job on the weight loss! Keep up the good work.

JUmpUp, those 4 pounds will disappear and you will notice the puffiness disappear when the med finally gets completely out of your system. It's going to take time for your body to readjust.

I've noticed that some foods bother me more than others, so I only eat them occasionally. I'm like NancyPat--if I give up completely on a food or food group, I find myself feeling deprived and then "pig out" if I get around it at the wrong time.

It's hard to find any food today that hasn't been affected by the environment in which we live. Even organic can be carrying residue from harmful chemicals since the 3 years of no chemical applications doesn't guarantee that the chemicals have broken down and left the soil where the crops are planted or runoff from "non-organic" areas haven't contaminated the soil in that area.

Good morning!

It's rainy here and humid in Pa.
Staying indoors by the A/C.
I can't take the heat & humidity.
Just got done riding my indoor bike for 20 mins.
It lifted my mood and I feel happier now. Was getting down due to being inside so much lately.
I hope you all have a nice day! emoticon

Barbara - thanks for explaining this. I wasn't suggesting that there is anything wrong with trying things to see if they work for YOU. In fact I am a HUGE fan of experimenting and seeing what things work for ME. I read and listen and if something makes sense, I will often try it - for instance, I read a lot about Omega 3s probably 20 years ago and added them to my diet because the research and the LOGIC made sense to me - long explanation, but it really struck a chord for me. I have been taking them ever since and continue to read about them.

With love and caring from Nancy ... wishing all of you a wonderful, blessed, and precious day.

The point of this diet is not celiac disease, in fact, he tells you to avoid gluten-free type foods. The basis is that when humans started adding wheat to their diet, that wheat was vastly different genetically than the wheat we eat today. In the last 50 years, the scientific engineering accomplished to make wheat hardier, easier to harvest, more productive, etc. has also had an effect on the way it impacts our bodies.

Obviously, if you have celiac, you need to avoid gluten. I don't have it, but his points seem very well-based. I do not go in for diets which eliminate food or create an artifical diet, but this just seems very reasonable, so I'm trying to change my eating habits somewhat and see if I notice any benefit.

NancyPat: Congrats at the loss! That is awesome.

Does anyone else find it difficult to lose weight during the summer? I would think it would be easier because of all the fresh fruits and vegetables and grilling, but so much of the other food that goes along with grill outs are unhealthy. And unfortunately, I really like to drink beer in the summer, and I don't like the low-cal beers. I don't drink a lot, but those calories add up so quickly.

Susan

I think that for me unless I am intolerant or allergic to certain things, eliminating whole categories of foods, etc. makes me feel deprived. I don't even completely eliminate the processed foods. I just avoid them and rarely eat them because they don't have the kinds of nutrients and make almost no healthy contribution to my well being. But each of us has to find the path that works for them.

It's been hard to miss the gluten-free news.

And I guess it makes some sense if you consider that wheat was not one of the grains our paleo ancestors ate. But a quick search turns up the info that we started eating wheat about 10,000 years ago.

Still, I guess it depends on where your tree was rooted that long ago - maybe the whole globe didn't eat wheat at the same time.

I, myself, do not seem to have a gluten problem, but I am also for alternatives for those that do. Good luck on 'de-glutening' your life and here's to feeling better!

I have read a lot about that idea, I thought it might be a problem for me and actually had the doctor check that out when I was having a particularly nasty bout of inflammatory bowel disease. The doctor took my questions seriously and she ran tests that found I do not have celiac and apparently no problem with gluten or wheat.

There are a number of people who do and if it works for you, then you are smart to try that. A lot of people find that their cravings diminish when they eliminate sugar, white flours, pasta, breads, etc. (wheat/gluten).

What worked for me was when I eliminated most processed foods and ALL trans fats, artificial sweeteners, added sugars and salt. Being diabetic, I limit my consumption of breads and/or pasta and choose whole grain when I do eat them, but they don't bother me. I also take probiotics and they (combined with healthier eating in general) have virtually eliminated my IBS after a lifetime of misery.

With love and caring from Nancy ... wishing all of you a wonderful, blessed, and precious day.

I am testing out the theory of a book I am reading which says that wheat should be eliminated from the diet. There's a lot to it, and it sounds very reasonable. Also I know that when I eat bread, I want more! So it doesn't satisfy me.

Sunday am

a little cooler, a little drier today - thank God.

So I am good on the cals and food choices for about 3 days, and then I have to beat the cravings back with a really big stick. If I can get through that - been successful, so far, I'm good to go for another 3 days.

Today is a craving day. ARGHHHHHHHHHH. Seems like it gets harder as time goes on.

Jumpup - you are doing great if you only have 4 more of the nasty prednisone weight to get ditched - you will get there and when you start losing the other weight you will not feel or look quite as puffy.

Barb - the heat hasn't really let up but they are saying maybe tomorrow it will drop into the 80s or so. We can HOPE.

Sat morning - rain, and blessed, cooler air!

Nancy - emoticon emoticon You Go, girl!

I have 4 to go to reach pre-prednisone weight. I don't look ANYthing like I did before though, Still puffy looking and round-faced. Not worrying about that just yet, though. I blew up before I added pounds when I started the stuff, I assume it will go away the same way. (I hope)

NancyPat, that is great!!

It has been consistently in the mid to high 90s since I got home, but I'm doing quite well. It's supposed to "cool down" to the mid to high 80's over the next few days. I'll be in a/c today at a friend's.

Happy Friday everyone - I weighed in today and had lost 5 pounds this week. YIPPEEE - maybe it was all that sweat that poured off me. I now have 10 pounds to lose to reach my 100 pound mark. Still a long way from my GOAL but still pretty exciting.

We should get a break in temp tomorrow! Woo Hoo!!! It has been very hot and humid these last few days. I have gotten in a little walking but not nearly enough. Stay cool ladies, I'd rather it be summer than winter for sure!!

Friday morning.

Food is all sorted out now, thankfully. Meals mostly back on track.

Yes, I find that jet lag gets me hard going West to East, too! And it usually takes me 2 or 3 days to get back on schedule. One trick I learned that helps is to pass on the soda on the plane and drink water or cranberry juice - as much as they will let you have.

My poor g'kids were really feeling it while they were here. Never could get on a decent schedule - even if it mimicked their home clock!

I have a ot of trouble with the clock changes too, LOL!

The weather has been brutal and I have not gotten too much done, a few early morning pushups and a couple loads of laundry. This can change any time, thank you. I feel so weighted down by the humidity I'm sure my scale will read 500 lbs. Even my four fans arent helping - just blowing hot, moist air around. Supposed to break soon. Cant wait!

Great day!

Here Comes the Sun!

Here is hoping some of this heat dissipates soon. We are DYING - I spend all afternoon at the pool and come home and barely get in the house before I am covered in sweat and dripping. I hope the part for the A/C comes in pretty soon - it is miserable - was 98 in the house when I got home, Ed said it hit 105 earlier. Tomorrow he plans to go with me into town - may go to library, the pool, or McDonald's since all three are a LOT cooler than the house is.

I have been arriving in the evening when I fly from the West to the East, so I go to bed on their time and get up on their time immediately. And THe same thing happens when I return home--I get home and go to bed at a normal time for me, and seem to be ready to get up at my normal West Coast time. I will admit that all the way home on Tuesday I dozed--at the airport, on the plane and even at home before I finally went to bed. I htink the little mini-naps took the edge off.

Frannie, happy belated birthday! I hope it was a good day for you.

JumpUp, at least the picnic leftovers have disappeared now! Just make today a better day, and move forward to better days ahead.

I've found that jet lag always gets me when I travel from west to east, but not east to west. When dh and I went to Germany several years ago, we slept for 24 hours straight when we arrived. When we returned to the States, the jet lag didn't seem to bother us. The one or 2 hour time differences in the States haven't seemed to bother us very much since we would sleep on the plane when we had those early morning or late night flights.

I'm off to try to get some sewing done before I go to the Y this afternoon for my workout. DH advised that I try to workout inside since the mosquitoes have decided to take over the area. The ground has dried just enough that they are out in force with the high temps and humidity we are currently having. I think I'll accommodate his wishes today.

Have a great weekend everyone if I don;t make it back on here before Monday.

Thursday morning

Frannie, you are gonna be numb for a while. Treasure every fleeting memory, thought or feeling you have that she's at your side. She is. She'll be there as long as you need her to be.

Barbara, what is your secret to avoiding jet lag!!!

Gotta get in what ever I can get in today, to make up for some sins of the last couple days, lol! I needed to get rid of all the wrong kinds of picnic food that are still in my fridge, but when I went to do it last night, my evil twin won out and said things like 'don't waste food' and 'a little of that would be good on...' Arghhhhhhhh.

Great day

Happy birthday Frannie - I wish I could tell you that the feeling of loss would disappear, but if it does, I haven't gotten to that point yet. Seriously though you learn to cope with those moments - Ed and I often have moments when Mike is very much "in the room" with us and we have learned to use them as moments of memory and celebration for all the memories we have, instead of moments of sadness - we often cry and talk and laugh because life does move on but the memories keep our loved ones, not only in our hearts, but also in our daily life.

With love and caring from Nancy ... wishing all of you a wonderful, blessed, and precious day.

Frannie, I know how difficult it must be for you to adjust to not having your mom around. Although mine has been dead for almost 4 years, I still catch myself thinking of things I want to tell her. It's particularly rough when it snows, since I always called her to let her know how much snow we had. She knew how much I love the snow, and we rarely see more than an inch or 2 here.

The heat is rough here as well. I decided I was getting a bike ride outside today, so I did my 4.8 miles in 25 minutes in 87 degree heat and high humidity. I've ridden in hotter weather, but haven't been riding outside much this summer. I decided my best bet was to take it easy until I get readjusted to outside riding.

Good morning all! I do hope it is not quite as oppressive weather wise where you are. Walking is quite a task when it is so hot and humid!

My daughter took my out to eat last night for my B'day, I did pretty good overall, probably could have done without the bruschetta but it is so good! I had blackened catfish with veggies and rice. I just could not finish it all! The fish was delicious and I have lunch today!

I am still a bit numb from losing my mom, it just doesn't seem like she is gone, just off visiting. My daughters are having a hard time adjusting, my middle one used to buy these boxes of jewelry from shopgoodwill.com and she and mom would go through them together looking for treasures. They found lots of them. She had bought a box right before mom passed, it arrived the next day and she had to go through it by herself. It was a great box and it made her so sad that grandma was not there to go through it too. But she said she felt like grandma was watching over her. So bittersweet.

Wednesday Morning

Barbara, glad you enjoyed your grandson.

I'm off to dentist today, so I've got to get my pushups in before I go, in case the novacaine makes me feel like doing nothing at all!

Great day, all!

It was so amazing to see the little kids I remember now shephereding their own youngsters. And most of their kids are very special. None of them were obnoxious, some just aren't as friendly as others. Of course, my grandson was the best of all!!

Jumpup, I know you will miss having the grandkids around to entertain you. Make the most of the routine to get back on track.

I hope you get to visit the grandkids soon. I had hoped to go to see mine next month with younger daughter, but it looks like she may be going without me. It seems like our schedules conflict, and she hasn't seen her new niece yet. At least she will get to know the little cutie without having to share play time with me! emoticon

Tuesday morning

Trying not to be too sad today while daughter packs up and goes home. I miss them already.

Back to the routines, though - probably good for me - I KNOW it'll be good for the g'kids - by the end of their trip, they both were still jet-lagged with dark circles under their eyes, aww, how sad. And the baby will have her mom back. I am so pleased to say that both DD and SIL seem to be just excellent parents.

Hope to make a trip down there in a few months.

So, back to the pushups and the stability ball and the mindful eating.

Have a great day!

Our extended family keeps extending! :-) We have had a family reunion at my brother's house (where my father grew up) every summer for over 60 years. Although my dad's cousins and their families have been coming to these all along, it is now growing into more people showing up as a result of research on the family. My brother has created a facebook page for the reunion, so people post to say "my great-great grandfather was .... Do you know the relationship?" Since my older sister had done a lot of research before Daddy's generation had died, we usually can provide the missing link and get to meet new members of the family.

Since it is supposed to be very hot and humid here this week, I either need to get my exercise outside early or go to the Y. I haven't decided yet whether to workout inside or head for the pool today!
