Hi, everyone! It's great to hear that everyone is getting their exercise. Starting gradually and building up is a great way to get in the habit, Judy. I like to spend at least 30 minutes on the bike, and dh and I have a 45 minute walking route. Our walking has been lacking this year since evenings have been spent visiting with FIL in the nursing home/skilled care/hospital. Right now I'm struggling to get myself back into a routine of at least 30 minutes of cardio (45 to 60 would be better) and 3 sessions of about an hour of strength training each week. It seems like a lot, but I've found my arthritis doesn't bother me when the muscles are toned and strengthened.

Judy, it's a small world! I live about 20 miles west of Suffolk in the Tidewater area, but grew up about halfway between Blacksburg and Catawba, I spent some time in my teenage years in New River at McCoy and at Clayter Lake. I have a brother who lives just outside the C'burg city limits as well as several other relatives in the area.

This week I plan to get some fall cleaning done so hopefully I will have a house again! Have a great day everyone!

I have a big plan to go to the gym as often as possible when I get home, since I think that I will have to start with pretty short sessions until I get back to speed.

Hi everyone, it is another lovely fall day today in the Chicago area! The temp is in the 70s and it is sunny! I love these kinds of days.

I have to agree 45 minutes sounds great to me! I try to get in at least 30 minutes a day if I can.

I do the same thing. Every so often on a Sunday morning I will walk up and down every aisle of Home Depot--just for the steps!!

Barb, in my book 45 minutes is awesome! Keep up the good work! I'm going grocery shopping today so I'm wearing my walking shoes... a few extra times around the store doesn't hurt.

It's such a pretty fall day... emoticon

Well, I made myself go for a walk this morning, although I wish I had been able to do a little longer, but 45 minutes isn't bad. Next week I will be able to go back to the gym and it is going to be tough!

Judy, that's how I started out. It was 10 minutes on the bike, and/or walk outside for 10 minutes. Gradually I worked up to much longer times, and once I started going to the gym, it was 10 minutes on the treadmill, gradually longer til I can do an hour.

You and I are from the old school... never wake a sleeping baby. lol

I've been doing better tracking my food and staying within my calorie range. And I actually walked on the treadmill yesterday. Since I'm doing the 10 minute a day challenge I hopped on there, and did 15 minutes instead. I felt really good after.

How's everyone doing this fine fall day?

Judy, my SIL went to VT. I'm here in Mechanicsville right now.

They have been doing the waking up thing then they don't understand why he doesn't want to nurse and is fussy. They just took him to the pediatrician to check his little belly button and I am hoping that the dr tells them to just let him be.

Good morning ladies!

Barbara, congratulations on your beautiful grandson! I have 4 grandkids now, and my first grandson just turned 12. The years go by too fast!!

Bonnie, I'm in VA as well! What part are you from? I'm in Christiansburg, just a few minutes away from Virginia Tech.

I want to thank all of you for the wonderful welcome I've received joining this group.

I've been struggling again lately... but I'm sure not giving up.

I think every generation has it baby "theories", even when my kids were little there were differing ideas on the right way to schedule a baby. My SIL was appalled when I did not wake DD for a "scheduled" feeding. Not likely, she had her own ideas and did not wake up on demand! Fortunately my Dr was a more flexible type and said whatever was working was best!

I don't care what a professional says, a baby shouldn't be awakened to eat. If they are hungry, they will wake up. I think a lot of people came up with the idea of a rigid schedule so the baby won't inconvenience their life. Hopefully daughter and SIL will continue to let the baby set his own schedule. I think they will find that it will work better for all 3 of them.

Bonnie, that was the way we did it then. My SIL is a little rigid, so whatever the dr told them to do must be adhered to--except last night for some reason they zonked on the schedule and the baby slept for 4 hours! He can do it, they just have to let him.

The first thing I did with both of my girls was let them set the schedule when I got home from the hospital. It almost seemed like they realized that I would be there when they needed me, and they settled into a nice routine of eating every 3 hours during the day, but going 5 to 6 hours at night. By 6 weeks they were sleeping straight through the night. Hopefully daughter and sil will discover how much easier it will be if they relax and realize that grandson is only a "little person."

And I am missing the strength training. It is going to be tough when I get home and start my regular routines again.

I got out for a short walk that afternoon and then had a walk yesterday and passed this morning. The weather has been nice except for two days when it threatened rain and then poured. Of course, they keep the house air-conditioned all the time--I miss fresh air....

They are so funny--new parents. Anything that they were told at their childbirth classes or the doctor is bible--even if it isn't exactly working. I know they will calm down eventually. My little grandson does have a little trouble with day and night, and he hasn't had a chance to sleep as long as he wants yet, because they are waking him according to the schedule. He is growing and just delicious!

Barb, I hope you were able to get a good night's rest and the grandson is settling into a better routine.

Frannie, we have been enjoying the fall weather here as well. It is wonderful to have the windows open and no air conditioning for a change. Saying no to baked goods can be so difficult. I hope you are soon able to get those extra pounds off.

I'm feeling pretty good--I've managed to get strength training in 3 times this week. That's something I haven't done since June. Now I just need to stick with that routine and not let anything interfere!

I hear you. Today was gorgeous although I never did go outside, sad to say. I am going to make myself get to bed earlier tonight and if there aren't any major problems with my grandson, maybe I will sleep and go for a walk in the morning.

Hey everyone, I hope your day is as pretty as mine! It is cool and sunny, a really gorgeous fallish day! I am inside but I can see the sun out the window behind me. I love fall, I think it is my favorite season. I am trying to refocus on my goals (not easy) and take off the pounds I gained since mom came to live with us. She loves to bake and we have had some wonderful baked goods. I just need to learn to stay away from them.

Thanks, Bonnie! No, we have been eating decently, and the only two meals I have had out were both breakfast. And since it isn't my house, I don't snack because I am not comfortable foraging!

Sleep is something that you would think would be so easy--and isn't!!

I have been eating oddly since I got here in Virginia, since I am not in my own house. I'm trying to be good, but sometimes it is hard.

LAURIEJG, glad you are sleeping some. It is a work in progress and does take some retraining. Several years ago I suffered from insomnia, I felt lucky if I got 3 hours sleep. I learned that I was worrying and running things through my mind, I would start thinking and end up not sleeping. I learned to put my worries aside at night, it took a lot of effort and practice but eventually I learned to get myself back to sleep without the worrying and fretting. I really had to force myself to think positive and restful things but it has become a habit now. When I find myself slipping back I can easily redirect my mind now. It was very difficult at first but it was worth the time and effort!

Laurie, glad to hear you managed to get more sleep. Keep it up, and hopefully your sleep patterns will change so that you can get the rest you need. The world definitely looks much better from eyes that are wide open! ;-)

It sounds like you do the same thing my husband does--if he wakes up during the night, he gets out of bed and does something else until he is ready to sleep again. I will wait it out, although sometimes I wind up not going back to sleep. My philosophy is that I am getting some rest even if I'm not sleeping, but he is only prolonging going to sleep because he is stimulating his body.

Franniedid and Bgumba,

I have had some success in sleeping longer at night. Two nights in a row I managed 7 hours. Even though I woke up many times I waited just a bit till I fell asleep again. Sleep is hard for me, but definitely one of the missing links in weight loss. emoticon

We are all here for you. Everything is not wrong. Most things are not wrong....it is just most are used in the wrong way. Veggies, fruits, meats, etc are all good for you. Just how they are prepared. No preservatives, not fried, but all cooked healthy and it will work for you. Hubby and I became label readers and if we cannot pronounce it, we cannot digest it. We use fresh or frozen fruits and veggies. No frozen with added sauces, etc. We do not deep fry etc. We do a little frying, but not very often. Last week we both wanted some fried oyster, we purchased and lightly breaded and fried about 6 each........We roast potatoes and other veggies for extra flavor.....It is a new way of eating and looking at food, but it has worked for us.

Keep on track

Just hang on. Don't think about what you CANNOT eat or do but think about what you have.
I am new here and don't know where you are coming from exactly, but I have been in that place where I felt everything was wrong. It really isn't that is just a mental game we play with ourselves to excuse our over indulgence. I read on someone's post somewhere in SparkPeople, can't remember where, that why should a slip in what you eat cause you to throw in the towel and binge? Getting a speeding ticket emoticon doesn't make you break every traffic law does it? ( hope not anyhow) In fact it make you more aware of your speed. Think of how you eat the same way. emoticon

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.

Today I need to get some baking done and try to finish washing window screens and spraying the windows to keep the spiders away. Somehow the spiders around here think they are supposed to decorate my house for halloween, and hate looking through their webs whenever I look outside. I'm off to the western part of the state tomorrow, so have a great weekend everyone!

Laurie, Frannie has given some great advice. Gradually get your sleep pattern altered so you can get rest. Research has shown that you not only need the same amount of sleep each night, but also you need to go to bed and rise the same time each day. Set a bedtime and wake up time and stick to them. You may want to try midnight and 7 a.m. (or something similar) until you settle into this sleep pattern, then gradually move the bedtime forward to give you 15 more minutes in bed until you are up to a good night's sleep. Even if you don't sleep, find a comfortable position and stay there with your eyes closed; concentrate on relaxing and keeping your breathing slow and even. Yep, this is the same technique used for Lamaze child birth, but it will work for relaxation and to combat pain or stress.

We are here to support each other, and this team will do whatever we can to help. Be sure to check in frequently.

Frannie, I hope the computers are behaving and giving you a chance to get some work done.

Barb, welcome to Virginia, and thanks if you're responsible for the beautiful fall weather we're having!

Hello all, I am taking a minute to post here and catch up! Our network at work has been messed up since yesterday morning. Internet is up and down and I can't get to any of the servers I need. Email is also up and down (mostly down!) so our network admin and technology director have been working to get us up. I couldn't do much yesterday so I cleaned my desk out. I emptied every drawer, washed them out and threw away a ton of stuff!!!! It is kind of nice! Anyway, we are still up and down today so I am posting here!

Laurie, we are here for you, posting here can help you to stay focused and we all need that. Make sure you track your food and sometimes you have to measure just to make sure you are really eating what you think you are. I had to, I was amazed when I realized that I was not eating a portion, more like 2!!

It is also helpful to read other people's blogs so you can see what is working and not working for them. Often you will see in someone else's posts and blogs the very thing that is keeping you back and it helps you to look at it honestly. Being honest with yourself is harder than being honest with others.

I really need help. Not much seems to be working right now. I don't like it, but I am not about to give up. I just need some help getting through all this "everything is wrong" mindset, and the physical and emotional ouchies I've written in my blog. I am going to try very hard to post here every day and get to know all of you. If I disappear for several days, it's because I am super depressed. emoticon You are welcome to give me a kick if (when) I do this. I need a team that works.

Now that I've said all I need, let me assure you I am not a taker. I've just come to realize right now I can't do this alone. I am an encourager and I have deep compassion and love for people. I hope this will be a place where I can give, too.

I think it is because I know that there will a mess when I get back....mainly litter and cat fur on the carpet. My refrigerator is so empty you can hear an echo in there!

I packed my bag, figured out what I am using for my under the seat bag (for my laptop), and now I just have to stay sane until I take off in the morning.

Barb, isn't it strange how we want everything perfect before we go away on a trip, especially since no one will be home!

I am vacuuming and washing the floors, maybe dusting some this weekend so that the house will be good to go before I leave.

Frannie, I hope the chemo works well for your mom and that she doesn't suffer any of the terrible symptoms or side effects. I'm glad your are finally able to get to some of the "want to do" tasks instead of the "gotta do" tasks!

I start my Bible study classes again tomorrow, so I'm trying to get everything ready for that. Tomorrow afternoon and Friday will be spent working on chores around the house--I just haven't decided which ones to tackle first! emoticon

Congratulations Barb, my first grandchild is now 19 months old! She is absolutely adorable (and I am a totally unbiased judge of that!). Enjoy your trip!

I am finally getting caught up at work. Now I can do all the stuff that I haven't had any time to do!!!

Mom is undergoing chemo again, it is harder on her this time I think. They had to move it from once a week to once every 2 weeks because of the impact it was having on her WBC count. But she seems to be feeling okay. In October we will do a scan to see if it is working. The tumor that started growing again was in her liver, and I think that if it was still growing we would be seeing some of the symptoms we saw last fall when she was first diagnosed. She was so very sick and while the chemo really fatigues her I am not seeing the nearly the same level of illness. So pray for us please.

I hope you are all having a good fall so far, it is hard to believe it is September already! The time does seem to fly. Enjoy where you are, don't wait for what may be!

Angel, have fun getting the Christmas shopping done. I actually did some yesterday--I saw a cute gift for the 2 year olds in my Sunday School class, so I thought I had better get it while I could. I also came up with ideas for other gifts, but will have to play it by ear to see what I make and what I buy.

Barb, enjoy getting those bags packed. I'm praying that baby arrives on time so you will get to spend lots of time with him!

Can you believe.....I have to start thinking about returning to my required school to work and shopping for Christmas. I do not believe in purchasing anything that we cannot pay for at the time. Need several months to get that done

Keep on track
