Hi you again

Go the "My Home" then "Nutrition" and you will see the menu planner and you can tick off what you have eaten and if you ate something off the menu then use the search engine and it will let you add that item. Hope this helps.

First things first emoticon and yes you can have coffee and tea (in limited amounts without sugar or milk), and lots of water (caffeine really interferes with your ability to lose weight so that is why they stress to go easy on it). You have breakfast when you wake up of course and then you can either have your snack between breakfast and lunch, between lunch and dinner, or after dinner depending on your time schedule. You don't want to go more than about 3-4 hours without eating and you never want to get to the ravenous stage and don't go without eating.

Don't worry about being confused at the beginning. There is a lot of information and it will take you awhile to assimilate it all. Don't get stressed over it and you will soon find that everything is becoming easier.

Welcome aboard
Jenna

Thank you ladies! My journey has been rather slow since I started January 1, 2006. I have made a lot of positive changes and feel better than in several years. I have arthritis and my knees have improved trememdously, I can now do things I haven't been able to for quite some time.
Let's just keep focused and with the help of the Sparks community we will realize our goals.

I don't love to exercise, but have done so daily for about 15 years. One thing that has worked for me- I go to the gym at 5:30 am before work. I have made many friends-- morning people at the gym tend to be compulsive and very organized--plan ahead etc. Now, if I could apply these principals to my eating!!!!

Hi Alysia:

I know that I have to upload it as a photo, but when I tried to do it, I didn't have it a s a jpeg, only an http:// url to put in and I got an error message saying it was not allowed. I guess I don't know how to do it.

Thanks everybody for so many wonderful suggestions. I am still dragging my heels over beginning to exercise, but I will do it. My foot hurts so much still that I am using it as an excuse, plus being too busy etc etc.

Thanks too, Alysia, for you kind comments about my photos--you look much too young in yours to be over 50! I had the glamour shot done last December just after my 58th birthday. I was feeling fat and unattractive. I am divorced and live alone, and I don't get many strokes, so I needed to do something to cheer myself up. It is amazing what a bit of soft lighting and a professional hairstylist/make-up artist can do for one's self esteeem.

I am lucky I suppose because I have a small face. If only that was all that was on display when one walks around! The bit below the neck is a lot less thin, unfortunately emoticon .

By the way, how do you insert the vitual model on to a Spark's page. I have a virtual model but can't work out how to do it.

Our weather is to be in the 50's this week so maybe I'll be able to get in a walk, the first in awhile due to the cold temps.

Hi there,
If the weather is decent, any one can walk. Just start really slow at first. That's what I did. I can't go out and walk all the time, as it's too cold here, so I walk in place, side to side, back.
Try it. You will soon be making great progress. You will do it!!

Hi, Carol, and welcome!

You have lovely photographs in your SP album. :)

Word of advice - stop dropping CPUs on your foot, lol!

You need to let that foot heal. The RICE treatment is great: Rest Ice Compression Elevation. Ice and compression (like an Ace bandage wrap) help keep the swelling down, elevation helps circulation. Rest, well, we know what that means.

Rotating your ankles, gentle stretching - perhaps with the lightest resistance Pilates band you have or can find - will help.

When I fractured the fifth metatarsil in my right foot, I wore comfortable slip-on shoes in a wider width than normal (buying two pairs of the same style so that one was normal, the other wider) so that I could still go for short, and I mean short, walks.

Strength/resistance training, like yoga or Pilates, will help keep you toned during your recovery, as you definitely won't be doing any heavy impact cardio for a while!

Rest well, heal well, and you'll be back on your feet in no time.

Alysia :)

Dear Carma

You are right - the first thing that needs to go are the excuses. It takes 21 days for something to become a habit - after that you will wonder how you got along without doing it. I should know because I was one of the ones who just couldn't see me "doing" excercises. I have been faithfully using the food tracker, the exercise tracker and all the support here and since December 20th when I started this journey I have gone from 242 to 213 so I know that it can be done, and believe me I was one of the people who thought I could never lose weight. There are so many supports on this site - use them and you can't go wrong.

Take care
Jenna

Thanks you everybody. All these answers are great. Just what I needed. I'll go check out the ten minute exercise program. I can do that. I have equipment. I have a Pilates balance ball and 2 pound weights and there is a treadmill in the exercise room of my appartments. It's getting started that is my problem and also working out when to do it. If I plan to do it after work I am usually too hungry when I get home and then when I eat I am too tired. I get up early to meditate before I go to work and that doesn't give me much time before I leave. Still ten minuutes should be possible. I know that I am just makign excuses (-:

Hi,
I just got into Sparks yesterday and am still trying to find my way around the site. I have just been reading your posts and it seems I've found the group I need. I'm 58 and have lost 46 pounds this past year with another online site but have been slipping lately so thought I'd try something else to recapture the motivation I had earlier. I have some health problems that prevents me from some exercising but I try to either walk or use an exercise video on most days. I'm so looking forward to this journey. Have a great afternoon.

What a bunch of great ideas...as suggested, if you can manage to do 10 minutes after a while you may find yourself doing 11 or 12...then the sky is the limit. Good luck, and keep the faith, baby!

Good luck and hope you find what works for you. I like to walk, but refuse when it is so cold out! I really don't like exercising either, but I do like dancing! So, I just retreat to my bedroom, turn on whatever tunes I want for the day, and dance my heart out! At least this works for me. It also de-stresses me after a hard day! emoticon

PS. there are lots of exercises that you can do sitting down , ones for your arms, leg lifts and especially your waist. I have injured my ankle 7 times in the past and I use to to alot of leg lifts while on my back. Give it a try and it will strengthen your legs while you heal and you will be really to go when you at fit again.

Hi, I am at a standstill right now too but it will change. I started using my treadmill again and at first I could only walk but now I run 9 minutes straight and after my run I keep walking to finish out the whole hour. I enjoy getting on the treadmill but like the last girl said even God rested one day so I don't think he would mind if we do.

Hi Carma. I'm another "don't like to exercise person." Actually I love strength training but have to force myself to do the cardio portion. What really helped me was to join the team Sparkguy's 10 minute exercise challenge. Knowing I only "had" to do 10 min. made it much easier to get it done and eventually I fell into the routine of doing longer times. Hope this helps some.

Hi Jenna,
After you exercise for a while, you won't hate it any more. I am to then point where I feel quilty when I don't exercise. Swimming is the best! I either walk, ride stationery bike, stability ball, and weight lifting. I vary them every day except Sunday. Even God rested one day. Right now I am at a standstill, and that is hard.

Hi Carma

Like you I am 58 and hate exercising. What I do like however is swimming, and I've learned that the treadmill and the stationery bike, while not my friends, are sure good for getting those calories worked off. I just started this weight loss journey December 20th and have gone from 242 to 213 so whatever I'm doing seems to be working. The exercise tracker on this site is great and there are lots of good exercise demos.

You will find lots of encouragement here so emoticon

Hi Carma! I like you do not like to exercise and any excuse will work to keep me from it. However, it sounds like you really have a problem. Have you checked out some of the strength exercises on this site? If I were you I would just pick out the ones where you can do them seated. You can even use cans of vegs. etc. for weights. I don't know if you have a wellness center near by, but there are machines there you can use to build strength also. I think this could help you because the more muscle you have the more calories you will burn when you can get back to walking or something aerobic. I am 66 so I can understand your struggle. I have never counted calories before, but I am now and am having more success than I have with anything else. I know some of the people who have been at this longer than I will probably have more and better ideas. Good luck and blessings to you,
Deanna

Hi Everybody:

This is my first team to join. It looks like I am in the right place. I am 58. I have been struggling with my weight most of my life. I have tried every diet on the planet but find that counting calories works the best. My challenge is exercising. I hate it. I always feel exhausted afterwards. I have been told that I have tired adrenals, whatever that means. But a couple of weeks ago I began walking with a friend after work. I was excited about continuing until I had to miss it one time and then I was less motivated. Then this week I hurt my foot - a computer CPU fell on my foot! No broken bones but a lot of swelling and bruising, so no more walking for a while. Now I am back to square one. I need ideas about how to get started really slowly exercising but doing things that are sufficiently varied that I won't get bored. I know that's asking a lot, but I bet some of you have ideas to share. I look forward to reading them. I really want to change my life and be healthier and I know I absolutely have to exercise. So help please.
