Good morning everyone,
I am home again for a few days. Hopefully my girl will go to hospital soon. She is getting very tired & sick of herself. That said, She is going really well this time & looking great. Her Doc is very happy with her progress to & so far, there is no C section in sight. Fingers crossed everyone.

The trouble with that bread for me is it blows up in your stomach and gives me the belly ache really bad. Must be something in it that I am either allergic to or react to it different. Good luck in eating it. Kinda like a pan cake that is what happens when I eat them too. I ate one for breakfast--already feeling it and already wishing I had not eaten it.

Hello to everyone- I found a organic flourless sprouted 7 grain bread today from Trader Joe's. Calories 80, total fat 0.5 g, cholesterol 0mg, sodium 65 mg, total carbs. 16 g, protein 4 g. Yes it is heavy but sure does help the craving of carbs and is very good toasted with peanut butter.

When I took a nutrition class, earlier this year, the dietitian suggested we use a deck of cards as a guide for how much meat we should eat during a meal.

Jennifer,
Good for you for starting an exercise program. As far as sitting at a desk, while you work, have you read the SP articles about exercising at your desk. These articles may be helpful.
What has worked for me is finding an exercise I really enjoy: bicycle riding. There are so many exercises that you're sure to find one you like.
Good luck with your goals, Mandy

Jennifer, I have relatives in NE. I don't like to go after summer. I have been there twice in the Fall and it snowed both times. I usually have to go to Detroit or St.Paul to get home (AL) and they are worse. I'm afraid I will get stuck and can't get home. Unreasonable fear maybe, but real non the less

I have been reading today: would like to share- the essential components of the optium diet is-- Varity of food and not to much of what you due not want. Then the amt of fresh food, like fruits and veg. and to keep the professed and refined foods very low. So the the calories and the pleasure of the food should be good to taste and the right distrubtion of carbs, fats and the protein. And yes the fun in eating our food with friends and family. Norma

I found this on another site: just wanted to share to all my new friends------------ What's in a Serving? The nutrition facts and calorie information on food labels aren't helpful if you don't understand what they mean or follow the serving sizes.
A "serving" is a unit of measure that generally describes how much of a food you should probably eat at one time — and it's often a lot less than you really consume. The serving size is the amount listed on the Nutrition Facts panel on packaged food or the amount recommended in the FDA's Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Consider the following suggested serving sizes: Meat: 3 ounces cooked, or a piece the size of a deck of cards.
Cheese: 1 ounce, or a portion equal to the size of a pair of dice.
Potato: 1/2 cup, or one ice cream scoop.
Bread: One-half of a bagel, half an English muffin, half a hamburger or hotdog bun.
Cereal: 1 ounce, or 1/2 cup to 1 cup, depending on the type of cereal.
Rice or pasta: 1/2 cup cooked, or a very small bowl. Think of the kind that side dishes are served in at a cafeteria.
Salad Dressing or Gravy: 2 tablespoons, or half of the small ladle of dressing at a salad bar.
Fruits and Vegetables: 1/2 cup chopped, cooked, or canned, or a very small bowl. One "piece" of fruit is considered to be a medium-sized apple or orange.
Juice (Fruit or Vegetable): 3/4 cup, or a small juice glass

Good morning eveyone,
Is great to see so many familiar names.. eg Rosie, GandmaTJ and it si great to see so many differnt ones. I have always battled with exercise. I guess it has come from being a severe asthmatic all my life. BUT NO MORE EXCUSES!!!! Despite the asthma, I am going to exercise, albeit just walking & stretching, every day from now on. I have joined an exercise challenge in another team & making the commitment with someone else has been a great incentive.
have fantastic day everyone.

There is always something to slow us down isn't there. I guess you have to take one day at a time, see how you feel and go do what you must. I want at least 20/30 lbs off by March 31,2007 for our son's wedding, but if I can't get that much I will be happy with any amount. I just want to be able to tie my shoes, walk without wheezing, which might be a trick since I have asthma, but weight is not good for that either. So I am working at it.

GRANDMATJ: (sorry guys; I posted the wrong person here...My apologies and here goes!) Greetings. One thing many do not realize is that after the age of 30, every year one is not active, one loses 1/2 lb of muscle; so if you are adding on pounds, it surely isn't muscle; this means most of your body comp is fat...and fat needs no maintenance at all to stay where it is......but muscle needs maintenance (ie; to be fed and worked properly and consistently) and this is because it burns calories..the more muscle you have the more calories you burn, ie, the higher your metabolism; fat does not burn calories. It is stored energy, true, but it is not active like muscle;
Then there is menopause, which slows down one's metabolism even more.....and if you used to smoke like I did , you can factor that in; I also did not reduce the amount of food needed based on my changing body and energy needs, and lower activity......thereya go in a nutshell! Lots of good articles on here to help you understand how a well balanced diet and exercise work together to help you change your body comp to a healthier level, losing weight in the process. HTH! Kat

Good morning to all, this is my second day in this group and I love it, all of you are so suit and give a lot of inspiration. I’m 41 years old and a single mom of two children, my daughter is 19 and she likes exercise a lot and my son also, I’m the only one who doesn’t, also living in Miami is so hot outside to be walking, people often walk in the Malls, but for me is a problem because them I want to go shopping: I’m a member of a Gym which I went last week 3 times after a year almost, so today after reading all your messages, they give me an inspiration to go the gym and do some walking also… Barbara

Hi Rklemrn, I see that Maryjeign beat me to this. The Walking away the pounds dvds are wonderful. i have 6 of them. You can find them at walmart, or on line at collage video or ebay. they all use the basic same steps, but in differnt ways or she adds equipment to it that you can choose to use or not. have a great day!
Jennifer I used to keep books for my husband. That was very stressful. Everything was always my fault, justified or not. He pays an accountant now. Mary

Goo moring ladies; I am in a third six week challenge on a team here and find it really helps me to keep on track; also my favorite exercise at my age, is aquarobics! We have great classes here and for many older folks it is the only viable form of exercise. You can really work hard at it as it is not hard on your joints, so oh, I love it. Lots of folks keep themselves from this wonderful form of exercise because of fear of being in a bathing suit! Such a shame. You are too busy working out in chest high water to be distracted by anyone's or your own "shape" , suit or style.
I also walk but my feet hurt at times as well as my hips, and so that cannot be my main cardio or strength exercise. Water aerobics also offers strength training opportunities; limited, that is true; but I also do land, because I know that my body will and has lost 1/2 pound of muscle every year after the age of 30 for every year of not being active.........ACK! So changing my body comp is one of my main goals, knowing that the rest will adapt to that. Have a great day! Got to get ready for the class. Kat

They range from 1 mile to 5 miles and there are even some that specialize in workouts for us older ladies LOL. They also have a series called Walk the Walk which have a Christian theme. MJ

I use to work at a manufacture making electrical lighting. When my husbands bookkeeper passed away after having surgery I got stuck doing the books. The sad thing is I would get up at 3 in the morning to get ready to go to my plant job. (lots of overtime). When I would get home I would clean the house , do the laundry, mow the lawn and finally sit down to do the books. Alot of nights I wouldn't get to bed until late. After a year and a half of doing this I found myself so depressed and crying alot. Just burned out! I finally told my husband to either hire me full time or find someone else to do the books. Well he hired me full time. It has been around 4 years now. Working at home has alot of benefits . But it also can get very lonely. You really have to watch your eating. And not to mention that your Boss is your Husband. Yikes. Make a mistake and you can't go home and lean on the ole man for support.

I am also one with exercise equipment in the basement and I use it all. Am going down shortly to use the treadmill, I just bought that piece used from a neighbor and I love it. I work at noon today so need to get the exercise in this morning. My hours vary and yesterday I worked long hours so no exercise. Have a great day everyone! Oh, I also love the watp videos and for someone with no equipment they are excellent and fun!
I hope when I get home from the office today, I have the same incentive as you to exercise. Exercise has never been my strong point, as you can see from my sleeping cat. I'm learning to get into more exercise now that I loss some weight. Do you consider working at home an advantage? Good Luck to you!

I like to exercise, but the age old excuse....finding the time. My friends tell me get up early and exercise in the morning. They don't realize how much I love to sleep!!! Walking in the evening is still my best bet. We have an exercise machine in the basement too. Covered with about and inch of dust. Jen, maybe you will be my motivation to clean it up and get back down there. Good luck today, have a great day!

Ahhhhhhhhh, Jennifer, to work at home, my ideal dream. There would be no excuse for not exercising (for me because I would walk with my husband). Then again, being realistic and thinking about myself-I would probably eat constantly - but I still envy you. Exercise equipment in your basement too!! I don't even have a basement! OF course, I do have a cross-country ski exercise "machine" buried in junk. Bottom line(I'm sure you have figured out by reading between the lines) I hate to exercise, except for walking, that is relatively easy to do. I'm lazy and fat and it is mostly my own fault.

Good Morning Ladies. Today I am really going to get into an exercise routine. I walk my dog everyday but our walk consist of stop and sniff and slowly wobble along. The only time I move fast is when there is a squirrel around and Sam (my westie) decides to try and catch him. I have alot of exercise equipment down in my basement and all I need to do is get my lazy bum down there and work out.You have to start somewhere and there is no better time than today. Especially with all the holidays coming. How is everyone doing as far as exercise goes? P:S I work at home sitting at my desk doing our companies paperwork. No exercise there.
