My girlfriend puts cool water in her bathtub after everyone is done with showering, and at night when she starts to boil and sweat, slips out of bed, into the cool tub, stays for 2-3 minutes, dries off, and gets right back into bed. Says it helps with her sleep when she can cool her body temperature down.

Love those 7 Dwarfs of Menopause, because humor is one of the most important survival tactics that will get you through this . . . whatever it is (though it sure sounds like menopause to me).

So glad I have supportive friends who are going through the symptoms at the same time I am--we turn the air conditioning on high when we are having "power surges," and help each other through the "senior moments," and tell stories on ourselves and share home remedies, knowing, eventually, this too will pass.

May it be so for you.

If you have health, you probably will be happy, and if you have health and happiness, you have all the wealth you need, even if it is not all you want.

I eat a lot of soy and have never had a hot flash! As long as I get enough rest and take my vitamins, I do very well. I also started getting in an hour of cardio most days and strength training at least 5 days a week, and that seems to be helping.

I can get really emotional when I've not been taking my vitamins or getting too little sleep though.

It's a pretty sure bet it's perimenopause. Do a Spark Search and you'll find articles that will be of great value to you as you begin this journey. Read all of them!

My SIL slept on a beach towel and kept extras next to her bed so she could swap them out in the night. Her sweats were so virulent that she'd have to change her gown and sometimes catch a shower just to get back to sleep. Mine weren't that bad but they lasted a lot longer. She was done in a year, while I took almost 4 years (start to finish).

I also noticed that when I'd go for a while w/out hot flashes, etc. for a couple of weeks, THAT would be the month I'd have a period. When the symptoms were heavy...no period.

I think the crabby, sleepy, absent-mindedness junk just comes from having to adjust for body temperature 24/7! You're always either taking something off or putting it back on--never a 15 minute span of normalcy~ Who wouldn't get flaky?

I tried the herbal remedies, menopause compounds, soy products, etc. and can't say whether they worked or not--but at least I felt like I was doing something! I didn't want HRT because of other risks.

Educate yourself so you don't feel as though you're going insane. Educate your family as well!! This might actually save a life--or at least a marriage!

Menopause has me in it's grip.... but I'm trying not to fight it and roll with it. The hot flashes are a real pain though... especially in timing. emoticon

I refuse to take rx hormone therapy, instead I take herbs and plant steroid supplements.

Helen... my mother had Graves disease too. Please be on guard for one of the major side effects, depression. My mother took her life 15 years ago, she was only 60.

Hang in there... remember it's only temporary and just a phase of our lives.

Hi Marie,

Yes, it sounds like a lot of us. I have the six dwarf's....I am not forgetful yet!! I pray I don't get way either.

I also have Graves Disease (hyperthyroid) it is in remission since Oct 04.

Are you tired a lot?
Are you hands shaky?
Heart palpitations?
Does thyroid disease run in your family?
Itchy chins and swollen ankles?
Of course the list goes on with the thyroid.

When you have your doctor do lab work, make sure they check to see if you are pre menopausal and also check your thyroid too. They will draw blood to do this.

Hormones!!! emoticon I hate the nights sweats too!

Helen

I am so sorry, guess I know where my mind is at!!! I have been sick all week with a nasty cold and feel bloated and miserable. Add that to the night sweats and I am so sleep deprived I cannot think anymore!!! I am abjectly apologizing on my knees.

Oh THAT is who those guys were!
I tried scrip meds, I tried health food meds, and now I am trying to get through the joys of Menopause taking nothing at all.
To be honest - it seems like I had the same symptoms with each!
I keep hearing everyone is different...

Fatat49, love the 7 dwarfs! So funny. I have had night sweats, they tend to last a couple of months when I will not have a period. Then they stop, I feel normal for about 2 or 3 months, have a period or two. This has changed a lot in the last year and 1/2 so who knows where it will go from here. I am glad not to have periods every month! The only problem with the night sweats is how much it disrupts my sleep. I am hesitant to take herbal supplements because of drug interactions but am thinking maybe I will have to now. I need to get some rest! I know that this like all things will end, and it is a normal part of life so just bitch with the rest of us and know we are here to listen when it gets to be too much!

Been there with the 7 dwarfs. My worst one is weight gain. I'm on a 1600 calorie a day and still can't loose. I weigh myself every Sunday morning at the same time, but the weight just keeps going up and down 4 lbs. When I loose 2 lbs. one week and still watch the calories the next week I've gained them back. It is very frustrating. emoticon

My gynecologist explained it like this to me.

Perimenopause can be up to 10 years before actual onset of Menopause (No period for 12 consecutive months)

It may include only 1 symptom or many. For instance, I only experience insomnia , or heavy bleeding every other month. But never had a hot flash, or missed a cycle at all.

It all depends on what is going on hormonally, some people are lucky enough that it is a gradual, slow change. For others it is very abrupt and swift change in levels.... that's when you get extreme symptoms, depression, mood changes, can't sleep, gaining weight, hot flashes etc.

Exercise helps me tremendously, also when I had my blood work done, they found a few deficiencies with iron, B12, B6 . When I bought and started supplement therapy (Walmart has great prices on vitamins and supplements) most of my symptom vanished!!!

I decided to have the uterine ablation done last May. It was one of the best decisions for me personally. I no longer get bleeding with periods. It was so heavy it was causing the iron deficiency anemia. It's terrific not to spend money on products anymore. Ovaries still do their thing every month, just no bleeding anymore. It was painless and quick and so worth it. Wish I would have known about the procedure years ago !!!

That's my 2 cents ! for what it's worth .

Terry

Check with your doctor. It could be the soy causing it. The first few years I would have a period if I was on anti-biotics and then once it happened when I was under a lot of stress. My doctors explanation was that some things affect how your liver processes hormones and that can cause a period. It sure can be an annoying surprise but usually it isn't anything serious. It does need to be checked out if it is happening frequently and you can't figure out a cause.

Has anyone heard of this. Stopped my periods 3 years ago, I'm now 58 and I have been eating high fiber products with soy and I just started having light light periods again with all the same side affects as when I was younger. Last month 3 days and now this month again so far 3rd day.

Yes, it sounds familiar. There was a time that I went through when I wondered if I needed to quit my job, but I persisted and used some over the counter aids (black cohosh and soy and more calcium/magnesium to help with sleep)and I got through it. It does not last forever. I think it is the body getting used to lower estrogen levels (actually a readjustment to many different hormones). Hang in there! It gets better. It helps to have a sense of humor about it if possible.

Oh yes, sounds like it. Adding soy to your diet might help - that's what I'm doing. And your Dr. can check your hormone levels to see where you're at.

Make sure to do something - you don't need to live like that.

It sure sounds like menopause. I have a lot of the symptoms and my life has been totally crazy now for a little over a year. Hot flashes, mood swings, weight gain (all in the mid section), weird periods. I have been to the doctor and he ran all the tests and told me that the only thing he could find was that I am in perimenopause. I would rather have a period every month then feel like I am not myself any more. He did prescribe antidepressant (prozac) and I did take it for a while but it made me very mean with everyone so I stopped taking it. Thank heavens that I have a terrific hubby who handles my attitude rather well.

Been there; done that.
In my case, it was menopause.

Has anyone had these symptoms? I'm trying to figure out if it's thyroid, menopause or both. I am seeing my doctor and an endo but curious about what you ladies have to say.

Horrible night sweats, difficulty sleeping, chills, extremely agitated and not exactly a joy to live with. It's happened 3 times in the last 5 months and lasts about 5 days with one night usually being the worse.

Does this sound familiar?

Thanks,
Marie
