There's this ordinance that's supposed to keep businesses from flying banners of any kind:
“They’re considered the same as banners and streamers and we don’t allow them in our commercial district,” Hanson said of flags from other nations.
In January, a business owner is cited for flying a Greek flag in front of his business. There are two citations:
“Remove and cease display of all flags except America[n]” read one citation. “Cease flying the Greek flag,” read the other.
So Nick the Greek takes the flag down under protest. Later:
"City Commissioner Maria Mark said the flag also was hanging in the city’s right of way in violation of the ordinance, but that was not referenced in the citations. Code enforcement officer Debbie White, who’s been on the job since August, said no one complained about the flag. She said she issued the citations as part of her routine search for illegal banners."
So Nick goes to the commission and asks why he's being discriminated against, because the Irish flag is still flying...
Eh, voila! Now:
""Everyone can fly their flag as long as it's not interfering with a right of way or creating a safety hazard," she said.
Sounds like they'll be redrafting the whole ordinance, since no one even seems to know what the point was.

It looks like they banned flags and banners in general some years ago, sort of like a sign ordinance, but made a loophole for American flags. The article says they were flying both an Irish and an American flag, and were asked to take down just the Irish one. Sheesh.
EVERY city here has "goofy" laws. You can't paint YOUR OWN HOUSE certain colors; you can't put a wreath on your door, you can't put a DOORMAT at your door; etc. These are a few examples of what goes on here, depending on where you live.
There are MANY Irish pubs who PROUDLY display the Irish flag here. The English pub down the street has their flag hanging, too! THIS is probably just some "POWER TO THE PEOPLE" character who thinks HE is IMPORTANT! It's just too bad he has to be such a TIGHT ASS at this time of year! The law will probably be changed; but as the article said, MUCH TOO LATE for this year!
