I have unfriended people before...either they haven't noticed or don't care enough to contact me about it...and it wasn't for political views...just random stupidity...
If you don't talk to these folks outside of FB, then I'd unfriend them...they shouldn't care...blocking works too but with as much as FB changes the rules, I wouldn't trust it for the long haul...
Closing your account might be a better option if you have no need for it (the teacher is doing better and back at work) or I'd just send her a message asking for a text regarding her condition because you are closing your FB account

I use Facebook. I have some interesting family and friends. One or two are boring, but I just skip over their posts. I never argue on FB. I like keeping up with some of the younger members of the family that I wouldn't here from otherwise. No one writes letters any more.
I hate FB for all the reasons you mention and more. I also hate that all of my devices act like its a law that yo have FB to play many games etc, I can't understand the need for FB or twitter. Borrrrring!

Blocking them works..you also have the ability to hide posts. I am sure some of mine distress conservative friends since i am a card carrying feminist , a liberal, and pro choce all the way. Actually tho, I don't tend to use my FB for a poltical aarena too much, so my conservtive friends keep me, don't block me, and just hide whaat hurts..LOL!
You don't have to unfriend them - what I've done is just block their posts from my newsfeed and that way they don't get upset that I've unfriended them and it saves me the headache of reading their garbage.

I'm reminded of a classic conversation Archie Bunker had with a Catholic priest. The priest told him that the Bible says, "Depart from a man when thou perceivest not in him the tongue of wisdom."
Priest: "Don't waste your time arguing with a jacka$$."
You can only beat your head against the wall so many times before you get a migraine -- the wall never feels it. I'd close the account or ignore it, but don't waste your time and strenght arguing with people who are too dense to listen.

I never really wanted a Facebook account. When one of my daughter's teachers got really sick and used a private Facebook group to keep us updated on her condition my wife created one for me. Most of my family, coworkers, and acquaintances are arch conservatives so all I see is crap about President Obama, long debunked conspiracy theories, posts of stupid chain letters, etc. Prior to the last election I did go a few times to refute some of the most outlandish crap. Do any of you guys have this problem? I'm considering unfriending almost everyone I know (There are perhaps 3 people I would keep). Might be a little awkward telling my brother that I'm tired of his backward, ignorant, and misleading posts about politics. I suppose I can just leave the Facebook account open and not log into it. Every time I log in to look around it just makes my blood boil and everything I don't refute I feel like I'm tacitly agreeing with and there is far too much stupidity for me to deal with. The other thing I'm considering is permanently closing my account. The signal-to-noise level is way too low to be useful.
