Not just this senseless tragedy but the tragedy that occurs every day that don't get media attention...too many parents are burying their kids due to violence...

I too wonder why she had so many guns...not only that but she took her sons to the gun range with her so they knew how to handle guns...I heard this morning that the shooter had Asperger's Syndrome (a form of autism) and he was seeing a school psychologist before she pulled him out to try and homeschool him...the guy they interviewed said that the shooter wasn't able to feel pain when he cut himself so it makes you wonder if he wasn't able to feel ANY emotion when he went on his rampage...

I just pray that this nation FINALLY does something and these people, and others, did not die in vain....

OMG!!! I SAID THE SAME THING! WHY did she need SO MANY weapons & esp. the KIND of weapons she had????? I've heard people who KNEW her say how much she ENJOYED "shooting" as a HOBBY! She should have taken up needlepoint in stead! Her "hobby" ended up KILLING HER!

I was just in the grocery store looking at all the food people can buy for Christmas dinner. It hit me about all the MOTHERS who were killed on Fri., who won't be preparing any food for their families! I thought about THEIR children being without a MOTHER! I also thought of the man who was going to propose to his g/f on Christmas Eve.
SO MANY LIVES have been RUINED by this senseless violence!

This is such a tragic situation and I do not understand why a person with a child with mental problems would have so many guns in her home.

I hope I make it through tomorrow without crying in front of my kids. This is really affecting me emotionally. Of course if they are rude and obnoxious (it is the Monday before break) my desire to hug them all will vanish, but not my sadness over what was lost.

I agree...it was a great and heartfelt speech...he talked about ALL victims of gun violence...when he read the names of those babies, my heart dropped...

I believe that the shooter had "issues" with the school...either he was mad/jealous of his mom spending time there or he got into it with someone before at the school but regardless, it was a senseless tragedy and I pray for all the families, including the gunmans...I'm sure they are all looking back to see if there were clear signs that they didn't see...

I won't even question why the mom had the weapons in the first place since she was within her rights to own them...BUT why have them at home with someone with mental issues?

I also wonder what was this "mental illness" that he had? Being a loner or withdrawn doesn't mean someone is mentally ill...I hate when people lump that label on someone without facts...some people are just evil and have no soul or compassion...(cue the idiots of Westboro Church who plan to picket funerals of the victims)

Arming school personnel is not the answer...we already ask to much from them with close to no pay...the added mental stress of being responsible for a weapon around their students is the type of "answer" that an idiot would suggest...

My heart truly breaks for these families but children are killed by gun violence on a daily basis...parents have been having this happen to often...I remember this summer the amount of murders in Chicago was beyond appalling...I remember about 30 people being killed one weekend...

Until we are truly tired as a nation of this happening, it will continue...the NRA is powerful but we thought Citizens United was too and they were soundly defeated this Nov...it can be done!!

Sorry for the rant...I don't have kids, but my friends do and I have nephews and nieces...very sad society we live in..

As far as the man in China attacking the kids, I just have to wonder how he got to 22 kids before an adult stepped in? That should have never happened...but knife attacks on kids in China are almost a monthly occurrence...SMH

Because that is the Fox News mentality, simple answers for complex problems. If we had single payer heathcare I really believe the murder rate would drop. Our mental Healthcare stinks in this country In this case money wasn't the problem. The father said he hadn't seen either son in 2 years Why?

I wish it had been as easy to get adequate prompt mental health care and treatment for my son as it is to buy a gun.

Rachel Maddow last night on her MSNBC show had some interesting attitudes within the NRA...very surprising! It's not on the web site yet as a topic...and I'm not up to watching the whole show again to get the points. I'll try again later.

I've lived in a country (Bermuda) that outlawed guns completely, and I felt safe there.

If no one in this country had guns, I would be happier, but I recognize that's not going to happen. We can at least ban assault rifles and semi/automatic pistols. You don't hunt deer with an assault rifle, and you can target shoot without an automatic pistol. And how about restricting the amount of ammunition people can buy? Apparently anyone can buy it in any quantity over the internet.

A crazy man in China just recently attacked children at a school with a knife. 22 were injured. None were killed. That's the difference a gun makes.

Lindagags, I'm differing with you. This wasn't rage of the moment..it was mental aberration as well. It was premeditated, but yes, crazy...he went there to do this. Nothing occurred in two first grade classrooms to anger this individual (who was not a student and not staff and had no reason to be there beyond his "mission") into shooting 20 little children. Sane people don't. someone might be enraged or in great emotional pain and shoot someone they know in the heat of the moment, but this is something quite other,

Oh, and please let's NOT arm teachers and staff..my son is a hs teacher in the metro area, in a school with gang members. They do not need a fresh source of weapons.

I lost my daughter, but at least my little redhead was blessed to fall asleep without any pain or fear (SIDS). I can't even imagine what these parents are feeling.

That is the "ARCHIE BUNKER" mentality. HIS answer to how to stop SKY JACKINGS was to "ARM ALL THE PASSENGERS"!
How ridiculous to arm school personnel! THAT is all you would need....give some hot headed teacher a gun OR have a WILD STUDENT grab the gun & shoot up the classroom!

I HAVE NO ANSWER as to how to STOP the terrible violence that happened yesterday; BUT...I KNOW handing out guns in the school is NOT the right answer either!

I can't believe so many people seem to think that the answer to this problem is to arm school personnel. How can people be so blind? There is no need for people to own assault weapons. I mean, really???? I think the name says it all. Ban assault weapons, and automatic and semi automatic weapons and make people jump through a few hoops to buy a gun. That's my opinion, anyway.....

Bridie, when I waas pregnant with my son I told ex that I wanted the guns locked in a safe with the firing pins removed. He refused. "If we tell them not to that will be enough." I can't believe anybody is that naive. If you tell a kid not to do something, that's practically an engraved invitation! And yes, my ex is also a dues-payer in the NRA.

WHY does ANY household NEED these types of weapons? These guns were ALL purchased legally! Has society gone THAT FAR DOWN THE TOILET that we NEED to ARM OURSELVES TO THE TEETH with assault weapons? Sadly, if someone is prone to this type of violence, they will do whatever is necessary to get what they need to inflict harm & create carnage!
This was NOT a RANDOM act. It called for careful planning & it is such a shame that no one who knew this "thing" (can't call him a PERSON) noticed anything odd in his recent behavior.

My heart breaks for these little kids who SHOULD HAVE BEEN GOING TO SEE SANTA last night & not lying dead in a morgue! A tragedy such as this one is horrific at ANY TIME of year; but it seems even WORSE at this time. So many families are SHATTERED & I doubt if we will ever truly know WHY! I don't think there is an answer!

I agree that guns are too prevalent in this society. You don't have to be clinically insane to do something like this. If you are angry enough and a gun is within reach, it is easy to use a permanent solution to a temporary problem. I really disagree with the "he must have been crazy" argument. That sounds like more of an excuse than a reason.

ITA Irish..he sounds like my Ex BTW..card carrying member of the NRA..who frequently left loaded guns within reach of the children, cuz a 4 yo "should know not to touch them." Little wonder he's an Ex. We do need tighter gun controls. It's the big money lobby the NRA has that halts all efforts. We also need our mental helth support system fixed in this country, and funded, so people like this don't fall through the cracks.

My ex is a gun enthusiast. He thinks guns should be as available as bubble gum at the dime store. After the NFL player killed himself and his girlfriend two weeks ago, ex said to me, "guns are only the symptom, not the problem." When I reminded him that it's extremely hard to use anything that isn't there, he said that people killed each other with knives long before guns were invented. While that's true, I seriously doubt the school shooter could have mowed down 28 people with a knife unchallenged.

Continuing to debate him on the subject would be a waste of time, so I'm saving my breath. But guns are WEAPONS, not tools. They need to be even more tightly regulated.
