Yeah, I can believe that....there is no way folks like Allan West, Michelle Bachmann, Sarah Palin, etc. would have been tolerated by the GOP back in the day...calling people in Congress "communist", etc. would not have gone over too well with the Republicans that actually worked WITH Democrats to further the country....

I'd like to see that....Republican become mainstream. Right now, they headed for the cliff and trying to take the country with them.

I hope you're right! I don't recognize these crazies..nor can I respect them, or feel they care anything about the country as things stand.

When Barry Goldwater lost so badly to Lyndon Johnson, everyone was writing off the Republican Party, but it didn't happen. I don't think it will happen now, either. I think the Republicans will have to come back towards the center at some point in order to stay electable, and they will.

We need at least a two party system to maintain our citizen driven form of government. I supect you may in future see a GOP split, and a third party form.

My parents, staunch Republicans, are drilling their way to china in their graves at what presently passes for the GOP. They would never recognize them in a million years..

Romney may be a moderate poising as a conservative, but they have Ryan, who's close enough to the real thing re women's rights, other issues, and religion to qualify honestly as conservative.

No need for me to say more..IMHO, Sparkle said all that need be said about my views on today's GOP, and those who need to go away to make them even remotely tolerable.

I just wish the tea party would go away. The R's would just be more like they used to be, which was bad enough.

GS, I certainly hope you are correct and I can find no fault in your argument. I am just a little hesitant to underestimate the stupidity and intolerance capabilities of humans in general and Americans in particular.
Oh, and btw, in one of your lines; "If the Obama presidency was successful it would be a repudiation of Republican policies." I believe the correct spelling (ala Palin) is "refudiation." emoticon

One can only hope...but I don't want the GOP to go away...I want THESE GOPers to go away...the ones that are unwilling to work for the good of the everyday folks that sent them to Congress in the first place...I want the Tea Party zealots to go away...I want the blatant ones that are disrespectful to the office of the President because a man of color is there...the ones that are further alienating the middle/lower class...the ones that rather slash federal programs in favor of protecting tax breaks for their wealthy friends...the ones that have lost all sense of decency...I want THEM gone....

I know I've posted similar thoughts in the past but now even more things lead me to think that the Republican Party is in its death throes. Remember that the Republican party adopted their "Southern strategy" in the 1960's opposing civil rights legislation to recapture the Southern white vote. This worked pretty well for them since by getting a large majority of the formerly Yellow Dog Democrats they could ignore other groups. This swept many Republicans into congress, the White House, and as a result the Supreme Court for the last 50 years. Now America is getting more diverse and soon Caucasians will no longer be the majority but just the largest minority. Barack Obama was the first president who lost the white male vote yet still won the Presidential election.
Republican rule peaked during the George W Bush presidency where they reached the trifecta of having a Republican White House, Republican majorities in both the House and Senate, and a Supreme Court stacked with a majority of doctrinaire conservative justices nominated by Republican presidents. It was a Republican sweep and it sucked!
The party's base is eroding and their platform is bankrupt of ideas. Their strategy of tax cuts, deregulation, belligerent foreign policy and scapegoating non-Christians, the cognitive elite and those on assistance is understood by more and more Americans as the policies that got us into this mess rather than the way to get out.
After Obama was elected president the GOP could only stay relevant by causing gridlock. If the Obama presidency was successful it would be a repudiation of Republican policies. After a pull-all-stops campaign painting Obama as an Anti-American, Kenyan Socialist crypto-terrorist they had no hope of sharing credit with a successful Obama presidency. Their only option was to do everything in their power to undermine the Obama presidency
Now the GOP nominated Mitt Romney because they think he is the candidate least likely to alienate moderate voters. They have lowered their expectations to the point where they know a true conservative of the Reagan/Bush type is unelectable so they are running a moderate as a conservative hoping to play it both ways much as they did unsuccessfully with McCain 4 years ago.
We may now be seeing the GOP's last hurrah before sliding into the dustbin of history.
