And I agree in principle, but in the midst of all the talk about the historically high number of women in congress, let's not forget that it's far less than 25% of the seats. Attention still needs to be paid to the fact that there is a glass ceiling in this country for women and minorities, and we don't live in color blind, gender blind world. The image of a woman holding the gavel in congress is a powerful symbol for women everywhere, particularly young women. It says, "this could be you." --ST
"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." —Eleanor Roosevelt
I'm totally in agreement of what you have to say Ruirik. It will be wonderful one day to have it not be about the "bitch" that climbed to the top but about the strength of her convictions. I also loved that she was holding her great-grandchild. Can you imagine being that kid someday and showing your baby pictures from when your great-grandmother was sworn in on the house floor.

I am in agreement that it is a good thing in general that a woman has made it so high in the legistaltive body. I hope someday it just won't matter though. I hope someday we'll be able to look at a person and elect them soley for what they believe in. When it's racial, gender and economically blind. I don't believe it will entirely happen, but I figure it's a good goal to set in the future.
It''s not where you start in the race. It''s where you finish.
I so agree, Jump. The Marble Ceiling - Rush says it isn't broken, just cracked.
Here is what Chuck Schumer had to say:
As 2007 begins, the Democratic Congress is ready to get to work and thankfully, we couldn't be led by two more capable people. Nancy Pelosi, the first female Speaker in the history of the House of Representatives and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid have been working tirelessly since the election to map out an ambitious legislative agenda.
They're going to do us proud and I hope you'll join us in congratulating both Speaker Pelosi and Majority Leader Reid for their integral role in bringing change to Washington.
If I bore you people with these type postings, just let me know. I find it fascinating to read what our elected officials are willing to put into print.
PS Pelosi rules - had her grandson with her and made the comment about coming from the kitchen. Don't you know that curdled the guts of some anti-feminist bozo's???????????

I'm Melanie, and I'm from Kentucky. I'm very liberal and tend to clash with right-wingers. I also love our planet and hope it's around for my kiddo and her kids. Trying to live a green, crunchy life in addition to losing weight is one of my main goals for the new year. I'm trying to reduce clutter, live as simple as I can, buy fair-trade and sustainable items, and I'm also learning to knit. I'm anti-war, anti-religion, and pro-marijuana.
