Kudos to Giant Step for sticking up for her employee and for getting the facts before jumping to conclusion. I wish the White House had followed your lead.

I am massively disappointed that when the story broke the number 1 concern of the white house was damage control.

Gosh, how is it that the Republicans manage to keep Democrats constantly on the defensive?

Anyway, where I work now I'm a leaf instead of a branch on the hierarchy chart and since in the past I never considered myself a very good boss I like it this way. I do think that my finest hour as a boss was when the head of another department called me and informed me of something one of my employees did that embarrassed our company and demanded that I fire him. I told him that I wasn't committing to any action until I heard my employee's side of the story. He countered that to maintain our relationships we needed to fire him as a sign of good faith. I informed him that I didn't believe in firing people for political reasons. When I talked to my employee I learned that indeed there was more to the story; he didn't show the best judgment but I didn't feel his actions rose anywhere near the level of a firing offense. I did make some phone calls to smooth the feathers my employee ruffled but I wasn't going to fire him. My boss called me in and told me that "we may have to let him go" and I told him that I didn't think he did anything bad enough to be fired over and that he would have to fire both of us since I was not going to fire him. After I pushed back the incident was quickly forgotten.

The white house's first actions should have been to he to get to the bottom of it instead of trying to cut their losses with swift action.

I'm back for a bit, then to bed. I saw a clip tonight of Sherrod saying she didn't want an apology from the Pres., but that she would like to talk with him about how things are in the South, in rural areas, among small farmers, etc.

Meanwhile I thought a bit more about the right wing media problem. Oh, Sherrod IS thinking of suing Breitbart for character assassination -- I hope she does. I've decided you're right Sparkle, about Obama not being the one to fight it out with Fox et. al. ... thinking back to when he was running for office tho ... remember the website they created to squash all the misinformation that was being thrown around at the time? It worked. So rather than the Pres. himself doing it, perhaps OFA, or the DNC, or some other grassroots group could continue doing the same -- rebutting everything false/fake/misleading. The Pres. can't be distracted by this crap.

Meanwhile, I also caught some skuttle about Fox already now making an issue of the class action suits that were settled between minority farmers and the USDA regarding discrimination by the agency a couple of years back. The little I heard was that the Congress was scheduled to appropriate the funds soon, but it was looking like once again the GOP is going to block justice from being carried out. Meanwhile Fox is spinning some related garbage having to do with that now.

Maybe the job they should offer Shirley is to head up the whole USDA & clean things up. I understand many of the people working there who were involved in short-changing Black & Hispanic farmers are still working there! If so, the bums ought to all be thrown out unless they've made ammends in some substantive way.

Bah! If anybody has time, maybe you can find article(s) on this.

See..I want Obama out of it {even though I know that is not going to happen}...

This should be a fight between everyone and Faux and that blogger...the more Obama stays involved, the more this is going to hang over his head like a storm cloud...

No one has taken Faux, that blogger and Rupert Murdoch to task in a public way and definitely not enough for them to feel the "fire"....even Obama saying something about the media will only serve to keep this going and it becomes less about Sherrod and more about Faux vs. Obama....

If the pressure is on Faux, they won't like it and they will move on from this.....every one of their anchors (O'Smelly, Hammity, etc) should have to say on air that they were WRONG, etc...stop looking for an Obama apology and saying how the WH was wrong and own up to their own mess...

That won't happen as long as we keep focus on the wrong party!

yes and no - FAUX needs to really be put to task over this. But I don't know that she needs to do it. I just really like her and I think all she really wants to do and DOES to is improve life for the poor - of any and all colors - working in the South.

I'm glad Obama called her. If he hadn't, it would have looked bad. What Obama could do is have her and the white farmer she helped come to the WH and there they could make a media event about what a "news" station does by manipulating the truth. I'd rather see that.

Faux and those idiots there should be the focus of all the anger from everyone, including Sherrod...

SHE needs to be calling them out every chance she gets instead of looking for an Obama apology...I'm glad he called her but seriously, what does that do? It makes her feel better but it doesn't excuse FOX and that idiot blogger for starting this firestorm....

She shouldn't want the job, even if the position is still open...she needs to use her "wave of fame" to shed light on the dangers of "right wing" media and deceptive reporting...I would call that blogger out by name and turn the pressure onto him/Faux until they issue a PUBLIC apology (on national tv and other public mediums)...

Then I would take the new position and use it to further my work on behalf of civil rights...I have to disagree with Jesse Jackson on this (not the first time)...the opportunity should be a public meeting with Sherrod, the farmers and the people at FAUX so they can discuss the ramifications of POOR reporting....

Yup, I'd heard about the phone call from the Pres. & the different position they offered her ... what? they couldn't give her a choice, in the event she'd been happy where she was? You can't tell me they filled her job that fast!

Every time we lose someone like this, e1 loses. You bet, if it were me I know I'd want to tell them to take their job and shove it. I hope she'll come back. The right wing doesn't deserve the satisfaction of thinking they pulled another one over. I wish the DOJ or one of the journalism assns would file some kind of class action law suit big enough to bring FOX down and off the air ... just get e1 on board who's ever been smeared by the scumbags who didn't even admit their own liability in the whole thing -- what, googling "Sherrod" was too much of a bother?

At least Ben Jealous of the NAACP was the first one to contact her among all the people who either said "ooh, a big story" or "OMG, disassociate before they come down on us too!"

Where's my riot gear???????????? Gimme that scumbag Hannity and the dumb blonde on Fox & Friends!

Thanks, Sparkle. I don't blame her - it would be a hard emotion to deal with after that. It's Fox's absolute fault and not the first time they've done it, as Maddow pointed out in the link below. But what really galls me is that the NAACP called for her firing - and she had spoken at an NAACP meeting! That's embarrassing for them, at the very least. I'm glad Obama called her - Vilisek should feel recriminations from this... I don't know. After listening to the whole speech, I guess I hope she stays in Georgia - but she could certainly do some good even higher up. It's up to her now, it seems and I'm sure she'll make a wise decision.

Back to Sherrod: if you listened to the whole tape, she talks about making a committment to herself on the night her father was killed. A commitment to stay in the south and work to make things better. So - a position isn't good enough. She needs to be re-instated in what she was doing and commended for that work.

I just think that with some bullies the best way to stop them is to ignore them...Faux isn't going away NOR will they stop with their lowball tactics so to entertain them is to just to give them MORE reason to keep it going...it helps their ratings and helps them "trap" the WH into an un-necessary quagmire that will go on for the rest of his term....

I say address it one time and one time only, call out Faux News for their role in all of this and then shut it down...with all the rest of the problems on his plate, playing "tag, you're it" with the idiots of Faux isn't needed....

They are going to say what they want anyway, no need trying to clear your name when they are going to keep throwing mud on it....

I don't know, Sparkle ... these people are bullies, and the best way to deal with them is to push back in my experience. No unjustly treated people have ever overcome by remaining passive and silent. Even CREDO is calling for a petition to the President.

If you recall, he called out FaUx before; and lately they've been rerunning a 30 second tape from 2 years ago making a big deal about the New Black Panthers ... of which there are ... 2, trying to say they intimidated people at a polling place and implying it was some form of "stealing" the election.

Also, check out what I found out in response to the CNSnews article (Bob's/Popeye's thread) that has other media spreading the story that some States are using the Healthcare Act to fund abortions, and thus claiming that Obama & the Dem's didn't keep their promise -- NOT!

Actually Obama needs to stay out of it as much as he can...the head of the USDA are the ones that need to be front and center on this so we can move on...HE (and Sherrod) should be the ones to call out FAUX news for their role in all of this and they can use the "reLIEable news source" mantra against them...

The more the WH says the more the press will want them to say...during the daily briefing, Gibbs just needs to shut them down with a "we are moving on from this" type of line...they don't have to chase anyone at all..with the 24 news cycles being what they are, this SHOULD be over by the weekend if people realize it's not going to be discussed any further...

They have apologized to Sherrod...that should be the end of it for them...going after FAUX is just going to start another endless cycle of the back and forth that was going on when Obama first took office....

I know Steph. We aren't the only ones ... you should have heard Olbermann's special editorial tonight -- he tore into e1 involved in the whole thing.

I understand that being the first AA Pres., the administration wants to try to avoid the whole race thing so as not to fuel Fox and the right white wingbats ... but I think they're bending over backwards TOO much, especially making knee jerk reactions like this. The best way to counter these false racist claims is to push back -- HARD!!! Otherwise, they'll just keep doing it, because it's working.

And guess what Fox did today? The friggin' morons blasted Obama for "not getting all the facts." Did they mention their own complicity in the whole thing, or apologize for not researching their "tip" from Breitbart and misleading everyone? NO!!!

As Sen. Grayson said to those who voted against extension of unemployment benefits, and to avoid getting told to remove the profanity from my comment, I say with him: "May God have mercy on [their] souls."

Ya, sure, call FAUX out on their crappy tactics... that's NOT the issue...

The WH is chasing after them like a fool... and THAT needs to STOP. NOW.

They don't care how much they have to apologize afterwards... no one reads the retraction... they want the shock and awe of the first punch and deal with the fall-out after no one is paying attention any more...

I just happened to catch part of the WH daily briefing, and I've got to say, Gibbs is really pissing me off ... he said Vilisack was trying to contact Shirley so they could "talk" ... meanwhile Bretbart or whatever his name is, is reported to have posted the whole video and is saying it still proves his point about the NAACP encouraging racism against whites (m#$%^&&@@f***#@^)!!! And Gibbs is totally avoiding mentioning or calling out FOX specifically -- which is what should be done -- to show the world that nothing coming from that station can be considered "responsible journalism" -- i.e., checking the facts before you run with them!!! The other networks didn't just "run" with the story, and msnbc ran the correct story, suspicious of the source to begin with.

Obama needs to come out strong and call FOX out for at minimum, carelessly deceiving the American public... not just saying, as Gibbs is doing, that this is a learning experience and shows how everyone down the line latched onto the story and made the mistake of not first checking it out. Well, e1 DIDN'T make that assumption -- just FOX -- and he's denying the WH told Ag. Secy. to get her resignation before Beck ran with the story on TV.

Sorry, but I belive Sherrod's version of what she was told and made to do from her cell phone on the road! The WH wanted to cover its ass really FAST -- period.

After watching the speech, I just really like her. What a scandal.

She'll be reinstated...I know Visaleck(sp?) has stated that her case will be reviewed(in other words, they'll reinstate her to make it right and to save face)...

The NAACP has apologized and even GLEN BECK came out and said they need to reinstate her because it was an obvious mistake to rush to judgment without knowing the full story....

Here's the WHOLE tape, if you want to see it, posted by the NAACP.
tpm.ly/cTW0qj%20
She says AFTER the clip created on Fox "News": "Working with him made me see that it's really about those who have versus those who don't. They could be black, they could be white, they could be Hispanic. And it made me realize then that I needed to work to help poor people, those who don't have access the way others have."

it's beyond scandalous that the NAACP AND a government agency acted on this without checking its validity. And it's a no-brainer that she should be re-instated. Blood boiling. News for Dumb Fux does it again.
Call me slow but I just found that there's a whole website dedicated to disproving Limbaugh's lies - and still people believe him and the hate he spews.
Conservatives live in fear. They lived in fear under Bush, believing he was going to take away their fear and protect them. How'd that work for them? They campaigned in fear against Obama, and they are now filling the gullible with fear in hopes of destroying him and all he stands for.
As the saying goes, "I choose to live with hope, not fear." But I'll also admit, it gets more and more difficult when the lies get more and more ugly. And BELIEVED by those who should KNOW better!

Yep, this is the 3rd time FOX has pulled this stunt and gotten away with it ... first was ACORN with the fake pimp and prostitute video, and only after the group went to court and proved that the ACORN rep shown in the tape reported the whole thing to the police as soon as they left. Back then, Rachel Maddow said "who's next?" -- little did she know that would NOT prove to be a rhetorical question! Damn, when is Obama and his administration going to stop believing ANYTHING shown on FUX?

That network should be forced to have the word "News" removed from its name. Damn them!

O, P.S. .... correct spelling is with the "o." If I don't see a petition by tomorrow from Colorofchange, moveon, etc., I'll also write both the WH & Secy of Agriculture. And yes, the NAACP issued a statement and contacted Ms. Sherrod personally; msnbc revealed the complete context of the video & the entire speech is already posted at naacp.org. The whole point of her speech was to show how even coming from a backround where her father had been killed by a klansman, back in '86 her first encounter with white farmers made her realize that it wasn't about black or white; it was about poverty. It's a story of overcoming and redemption; of rising above what we might be tempted to do! GEEZZZZZZZZZ-US!!!!!

This is the letter I have sent to the President:

Dear President Obama,
It is IMPERATIVE that the hatchet job done by your administration, the NAACP and Tom Vilsack of the Dept. of Agriculture on Shirley Sherrod. This poor woman was fired from the dept based on INACCURATE information presented by Fox "News".

If this issue is not corrected, it will be a HORRIBLE injustice to this woman.

Thank you for your time.
------------
I have been on the Dept. of Agriculture's site to try to send a message to Tom Vilsack, but alas, I can't get to him by email. I will be on the phone tomorrow (202-720-2791). This is such a HORRIBLE injustice, that I have to do my part to at least state my outrage. Won't you join me. Feel free to copy and paste my letter.

I heard that the NAACP apologized, but she has not been given her job back. Even the Georgia farmer has come out in support of her. The whole thing is so wrong.

Have you guys heard about the hatchet job that was done on this poor woman by "Faux" "News"?!

They showed an edited video of a speech she made to the NAACP describing how she grew with redemption from an earlier time (25-28 yrs ago) when she felt like using reverse racism to punish a white farmer for the injustices that had been done to so many black farmers. Had they shown the unedited speech, she then went on to say that she had realized that the problems had always been the "haves" against the "have nots", and not race. BUT, some crappy right wing blogger KNEW what he was doing by only showing the first part of the speech and presenting it to the fools at Fox who, only too eagerly, worked it over on all their shows last night.

This poor woman was fired by the Agriculture Dept (Tom Vilsack) and disparaged by the NAACP based on this FALSE report about her.

The wife of the supposed aggrieved white farmer has said that this woman SAVED their farm for them and had been a friend to them and that it was not right how she was being treated.

I do not understand how this blogger can so blithely destroy someone's career and hold his head up. I don't care how much he disagrees with the administration. You KNOW the purpose for his act was to reflect on the administration and to try to show reverse discrimination by the Obama administration. SICK!!!!!!!!!!
