Spoken like a true hippie and feminist, Steph ... I have to admit that I've been guilty of using the "respect for the office" sound byte myself - when it happens to suit ME emoticon hahaha ... but just what is "an office?"-- it's just a thing, right? So you respect the thing regardless of who's in it???

But when the opposite political party takes to telling and spreading out and out lies and craziness about the Pres., do we defend them under "freedom of slander" or ???????????

well, wise men with wisdom beyond their times did indeed create a constitution and offices of the presidency and vice presidency, along with our congress. But men fill those offices. And unfortunately the person that fills that office isn't always wise beyond the times - that's my point. I cannot respect an office - the person in it, possibly. But they have to earn the respect. The office does not just give it, nor should it and Cheney and Boosh hare both good examples of that. Had the office been respected when Carter was in it, we would be in a very different place now. You cannot get away from the man in it - and it has been filled by men to date.

Y'know, Steph, those dark days took it out of me for the whole of the government, not just the whacked out Shrub Executive branch or whatever the hell it is that Cheney thought he was running... some 4th Dark Ops group... but the government was set up by really smart guys who could NEVER have envisioned a Shrub/Darth Vader ticket running the country into the ground but did pretty well up to them with the checks and balances thing...

After the run of horse crap done to us by the Shrub years, I lost respect for the whole of it...

but maybe it's that so MUCH of the government is populated with such an extraordinary quality of boob...

I mean, we do grow a fine crop in this country and our jackasses are truly of the first water...

Now I gotta go over to the oil spill thread and rail about it being time to impeach Scalia... speaking of dirty politicians... and he. is. diiiiiirrrrty.

OK, I'm days late in this conversation, but I enjoyed reading it. I have to jump in, though, about "you don't have to respect the person in the office, but you have to respect the office of the presidency"
I completely lost respect for the office when Boosh defiled it. Obviously you should be able to separate the office from the man, but it was not possible during the Boosh years. To that you can add the office of the VP and the man in in - Boosh-Cheney did more harm in the US and the world in those offices than was imaginable.
So - how do you maintain respect for an office when you have such destruction coming from it? I just cannot see past that to maintain respect for the office.

Whenever possible, be kind. It's always possible.

I lost power in Mooville yesterday about 4 hours after Maha left, Carli... I wonder if it isn't the Repub. energy lobby flicking our switches just to prove they can...

Ah, nothing like a productive day ... except I just got mixed up and re-addressed the political GOP crap on the Medvedev burger thread -- I wonder how his stomach was afterwards??? That was one hot burger with jalapeños and all on it!

Of course I have no idea if some Russian foods are spicy like that ... maybe somebody should tweet Palin and see if she knows, being able to see Russia and all from her house ... heh, heh ...

Anyway, weeds are whacked, lawn is mowed, toilet fixed, and I am sopping sweaty ... just in time for our next batch of storms! Only had one power outage so far ... emoticon

I knew the GOP was going to kill the benefits because they have done it before...they actually need to find a way to FIX the problem so that they won't have to keep "extending" the benefit and this won't keep happening...

They are all in a hurry to start their summer recess(great word for those kids) and this would be further proof that the "60 votes" mean nothing in the long run..the GOP (and probably a few wimpy Dems) still can block things that benefit millions

Ah, here I am ... in case you were wondering ... thanks for the compliment, Trace ...

I've been watching all the GOBP buffoonery, etc., while dodging storms, heat, fixing toilets (no, I'm not talking about Limbaugh or Beck's mouths), and trying to keep up with the weed and grass growth from the rain ...

just popping in to say hi, and the Dem's have to include more reconciliation measures in their bills instead of watering them down in hopes of getting those 60 votes! I can't believe the Senate voted down extension of unemployment, with Hatch and some other clown justifying it by saying "we don't need no more hobos & lackeys" ... and one sounding just like Hayward of BP lamenting that he was missing a horse race or something by having to stay on the floor to fillibuster the thing! Poor thing ... meantime, 1.6 million people are going to lose their unemployment (which you pay for, btw, in your paycheck when you are working) ... and I guess, end up applying for welfare instead???

They don't even have to respect Obama actually but they do need to respect the Office of the President, regardless of who is in it....

I'm sure that Obama doesn't have much respect for them either on a personal level....

Last night I watched the show Lie To Me. A psychologist was prepping a witness for a big trial. As a model of how to react to hostile questioning from the attorney, she used the video of Obama reacting to the "you lie" senator. Perfectly modulated response to serious provocation.

"Why do we keep latching on to these flunky, inarticulate leaders like Dubya, Palin, McCain, Lieberman, Bachmann, Angle, etc????????????"
----------------------------------------
-------------

Because we have turned into a culture who loves a "fool"...Obama doesn't make for a good sound bite on tv because he does think before he speaks, whereas the others say pretty much anything and the public clamor's for more...look at our "celebrities" like Kim Kardashian (who wouldn't be famous had it not been for her s*x tape), Paris Hilton (see above abt Kim), Jessica Simpson (who made more from being a twit than she did on her music career)...the list goes on and on...

Obama was/is a breath of fresh air in politics but like most fresh air, when it runs into a loud trashy area (Palin, Bachman, Beck, etc) all you do is smell the stink!!!!

I'm pretty sure this was a whole sub-topic of Orwell's 1984 if it doesn't offend any of you too much that I make a literary reference that none of you REPUBLICAN OPERATIVES SNOOPING AROUND OUR THREAD has ever read...

PS... If any of you do NOT know VALERIEMAHA, she is the other half of the dynamic duo who got me to hang around Spark People after I found them. I was sure there was NO ONE but those Carli mentions in the below post who spent any amount of time here... if it were not for them, I would never have met any of YOU!

The other one?

Oh, it was CARLIE_MAE, of COURSE!!!

And it is Maha's calming influence that keeps me from flying completely off the handle... while Carli reminds me of why the handle needs to be flown off of!!!

I love them both and ALL. OF. YOU!!!!!

What really bugs me among all these wingnuts is the resentment of those with higher education or intelligence ... I remember JFK's push to make it possible for more young people to get college degrees and beyond, but today it seems like being educated, thoughtful, and open-minded is a dirty thing to these folks & even going so far as to be greeted with hatred.

Behind it all is not only fear, but self-loathing on the part of these folks. Just look at all the stupid politicians and wack jobs they align themselves with ... it's been going on since Reagan was elected President & has now reached a really scary place for me as for where this country may be headed.

Obama isn't disliked only for being the first AA Pres, but also because he's probably among the top 10% of the smartest and most intelligent people in the U.S. Interesting that he is much more well-liked and approved of abroad than in his own country, eh? What does that say about us??? Why do we keep latching on to these flunky, inarticulate leaders like Dubya, Palin, McCain, Lieberman, Bachmann, Angle, etc????????????

At some level they have chosen to live without risk, to close themselves off to different ideas and associate with only those that have the same parochial view. In my opinion, Christianity, taken to that extreme is more cult-like than Christian....sad.

Nope ... they have absolutely nothing in there except what has been indoctrinated into them ... this cousin, for example, doesn't read, rarely watches television, except for the Bible thumping stations, FaUX, only listens to Christian music, and hasn't a clue as to how people live outside of her own comfort zone.

Kind of reminds me of the Congressional Hearing of Tony Hayward earlier this week ...

"I don't know ... I'm afraid I don't know that ... I'm unaware" ... (somebody counted how many times he said that ... 77) Why didn't he just save us all a bunch of time and, unlike my cousin, who really doesn't know anything ... take the 5th right off the bat and tell them he couldn't incriminate himself in light of the criminal charges he'd be facing?

Would you believe a week ago my holy-roller cousin called me and when idjiot Palin came up she smugly said "Obama has a lot to learn" ... & when I reminded her that her Boosh was only a 1/2 term Governor, and before that a lackey and a failure even in his own father's oil business ... she came back with "well, people learn alot from failures too" and then repeated her stock line from above ...

so then I asked her wtf she meant by that -- i.e., specifically, what is it that she thinks she knows with her h.s. education that Obama doesn't ... silence ... hahaha

I saw the public service ad he and Clinton did for Haiti relief. Clinton wisely did all the talking. They limited the Shrub to "thank you," which he somehow managed not to screw up.

When he wiped his hands on Clinton's shirt after shaking hands with a Haitian?

Oh, ya... THAT'S our Shrub!

Remember when he went to Haiti with Clinton? Embarrassing.

C'mon do we SERIOUSLY want GWB to head a charitable organization???

His "gift" to the public is staying out of sight...and I'll take that!!!! We'll just call him during a crisis to contact his rich friends and then we'll leave him to Facebook....

Yeah, I was a Barbara fan until that one. She totally lost me after that.

Yeah, Barbara Bush's comments during the Katrina aftermath pretty much did her in as far as I was concerned...I know she may not have intended for the statements to be taken in the context but thinking before you speak is a good thing and apparently something that she didn't learn...neither did her son....

Strange the musings that come to one in the dark of night..I wonder if all the recent "conversions" in ideology reported amidst the Republican elite's young is simply an attempt by the old guard to reclaim the voters with a new generation differently packaged. Yes, I know..I'm a horrid cynic..we crones can be..

I used to work in a large insurance office in Los Angeles. Two of my best friends were conservative Republicans. We would razz each other, of course, but we were all great friends.

I am happy to say that my kids never went over to the dark side to be rebellious. Don't know what I would do with an Alex P. Keaton in the family.

I think that it is fairly common for kids growing up to initially take on the political mantle of their parents. After all, that's pretty much the only side of politics that they are exposed to when young.

I know when I started college I was surprised to find that Democrats didn't carry a pitchfork and didn't all have long, black, forked tails.

When called on to think for themselves, our kids do a pretty good job - overall.

Too bad the tendency is still for children to adopt their parents' political views ... we need more like this who learn to think independently for themselves.

Notice they gave Chris Wallace the interview & not Hannity or Beck ... which suddenly makes me ask ... never mind the Bush's, what the heck is Mike Wallace's son doing on FaUX???

It's too bad that Bush wasn't as good a President as is a father. The fact that the Bush girls are not Stepford Republican woman is promising.

I've always like the Bush girls. I saw Jenna on Ellen, and she was so sweet. She called her dad and they talked live on the show - it was adorable! She really loves her dad, and it must be so hard to see people constantly harassing him and speaking ill of him. Ultimately, he's just a human. He's a father and a husband. She's a strong woman, and I'm glad she hasn't let public criticism of her father affect her relationship with him. They have different opinions and love each other. Unheard of!

Laura Bush has always intrigued me. I think there is a whole lot more to her than we ever see. I'm glad her daughters are doing OK. I was afraid for a while they were going to be drinkers like their Dad.

I looked it up. In my opinion, getting arrested for protesting anti-aparteid and the CIA is not "getting into trouble". I call it standing up for what you believe in.

Reagan's kids have the issues....especially the older ones (the older daughter passed on) The younger ones seemed to get it together eventually.

I just like that Laura evidently recently said that she supports abortion rights & gay marriage. I've always liked both Mrs Barbara Bush, Sr & Laura. They both have a wicked sense of humor & are very smart women. I like that the twins are taking after the strong women in their family and not from the knucklehead. :)

I read this earlier and realized that both Bush daughters have really grown up from the partying duo to real life. If I'm right isn't Barbara the Humanitarian of the two, working with AIDS patients and others, while Jenna became the school teacher, part time author & part time journalist.

Good to know kids like Chelsea, Bush twins, and hopefully the Obama girls don't wanna end up like the Reagan kids... or was it the Carter kids... which kids were the blacksheep

Dubya's daughter, Barbara has carved out her own way concerning the right to adequate health care for all persons. Bush's legacy may be that his own family champions liberal causes.
