The bill from Baucus is everything that could possibly be wrong with an implementation of "national health care." Big, big taxes on the middle class - yeah, that's going to go over. yeah, right.
I know it's a pipe dream in the States, but those damn insurance companies need to be taken out of this equation. It will never be a good system as long as they are involved. It cannot be. They have too much at stake to think of the common good. Take, for example, Baucus' bill's idea that insuarnce coverage has to be adequate or the company will be penalized with taxation. OR that everyone has to be insured so pre-existing conditions don't hold. The insurance companies will just up the costs in order to get their losses down. Insurance companies will NEVER work in a national health care system.
We have to work to get that Public Option in - it just won't work without one.
I know you probably don't want to hear about Denmark's and it isn't relevant since it's so different. There are no insurance companies involved. The hospitals are run on government money - taxes - and doctors are paid by the state - taxes. Everyone can just go to the doctor or to the hospital when they need to.
People here can go to private doctors and hospitals if they want. They just have to pay themselves. There is insurance available, but there's generally no reason to have it. (There's more to it than that, but it's a long story.)
As long as insurance companies or HMO's or cooperatives are part of this, forget it. Obama probably should have looked at the history of the Canadian health care system: one province started to the skeptical words of the rest of the country. But in a relatively short time, the whole country went over to it. "Single pay" I suppose is as close as it will ever come to a true national health care.
But I have to keep reminding myself that this thing is called a National Insurance Plan. Therein lies the rub and it's a big one.
sigh. sigh and sigh again.
Epic FAILURE is right, Kady. I hope this doesn't make it out of the committee, Keith. They need to remember - some of these spineless "Democrats":
You can please some of the people some of the time
And some of the people all of the time (and then there are those nevers)
But you can NEVER PLEASE ALL OF THE PEOPLE ALL OF THE TIME.
Stop trying to please the conservatives who believe this is the end of the US as God created it. Oh GAWD.
Whenever possible, be kind. It's always possible.
