Sickening. Totally offensive. I can't imagine how anyone could make a joke about something as frightening as the KKK.

And it just got a whole lot worse:

White Supremacist Group Posts Doctored Photo Of Sotomayor With KKK Hood

John Aravosis at AMERICAblog notes that the Council of Conservative Citizens — a group the Southern Poverty Law Center calls a “brazenly racist group” — has put up a doctored photo of Supreme Court nominee Judge Sonia Sotomayor. In the picture, Sotomayor is wearing a KKK-type hood. On her robe is a raised fist and the words “La Raza”:

Lunacy take 753!

"Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who has been generating more headlines for the GOP then he has in years, decided to push a little further Wednesday than many of his fellow Republicans who have been claiming that President Obama's Supreme Court nominee, Sonia Sotomayor, once made a racist comment.

Gingrich Twittered, "White man racist nominee would be forced to withdraw. Latina woman racist should also withdraw."

------
In response to conservative attacks that President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee holds racist views, White House press secretary Robert Gibbs warned Republicans that they might want to “be careful” playing with such fire.

She's a very "safe" choice. Remember that she is replacing a fairly moderate (although slightly left-leaning) justice. Obama didn't need to get radical with this pick.
We all knew that no matter who he picked, the right was going to object. Barring any thing really weird showing up, she will get seated. Some repiglicans looking to make names for themselves will try to roadblock the process. But they will all end up looking bad in the long run.
The real fight will come a couple of years down the line when a conservative justice retires. Then the balance of power on the court will be decided by the nomination of someone a bit more left of center than Sotomayor.

I think it's a great nomination. The usual right-wing nonsense won't dampen it for me.

I think it is an amazing choice. She is qualified. She is by all accounts mainstream to slightly left. She will make the Hispanics happy.

Obama went the pragmatic way with this one. He has a lot of things he wants to get through this congress and I'm sure he figured the last thing he needed is the fight it would take to get a fire breathing liberal confirmed at this time.

Personally, I would rather see health care passed. Especially when she IS qualified. More likely than not, he will have another chance or two in the first four years.

Considering that some of the Republicans currently in the Senate confirmed her with no problem when she was nominated for the Appeals Court, they would have trouble explaining their "flip" since she hasn't had any controversial rulings...

I give the GOP credit for not suffering from "foot in mouth" disease this time like Huckabee who released a statement about "Maria Sotomayor being an activist judge"...he prepared the statement before Obama even made the announcement and didn't even bother to verify the name beforehand....what a jack*ss

The nice part is that he has nominated a judge that has a record. That's new of late. The somewhat not so good news is she is more a Souter than a Stevens. But I guess the confirmation process presents problems. However there are all kinds of rumors about how could you vote against Alito and vote for this person.

Here's a good concise message on the right attacking Obama's choice for the Supreme Court and the Mainstream Media's excitement over the "big battle," with the politically bankrupt right wing and Republofascists and the Democrats in the Senate:

From Americablog News www.americablog.com/2009/05/get-read
y-
for-onslaught-of-right-wing.html
by Joe Sudbay:

"This is going to be a battle. The right wingers are geared up and well funded. And, they've got their friends in the traditional media already spewing their rhetoric. Keep in mind that cable news wants this to be a battle. It's good for ratings. (And, let's face it, most of the very high paid media types in D.C. have absolutely no capacity to understand Sotomayor's amazing life story.) Today, however, as much as CNN is trying to stir the pot, their Republican analyst, Ed Rollins, said this will turn out to be a "brilliant choice."

Also, courtesy of a tweet from David Shuster, great in depth analysis from Mother Jones.com by the talented David Corn of who's first out of the gate in opposition (our old friends the American Taliban aka the religious right) and how Obama's choice is shrewd politics. www.motherjones.com/politics/2009/05

I got to hand it to the right and their conservative mouthpieces. Their sexism, bigotry and hypocrisy knows no bounds.

President Obama nominates Judge Sotomayor of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit. The "boy genius" (LOL) Karl Rove wonders on Faux News whether she was smart enough to be on the Supreme Court. “I’m not really certain how intellectually strong she would be, she has not been very strong on the second circuit,” he said. (from Thinkprogress.org, as I NEVER watch Fox.) And Karl, Harriet Miers and Alberto Gonzalez were the sort of high intellect, legal scholar material you had in mind for SCOTUS? You must have the early signs of dementia or Alzheimer's. It's just amazing at their narrow-minded stupidity.

Like Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Antonin Scalia are winners in the HiIQ Bowl...how qualified does one have to be? Although I expect this from the party of no ideas, thinks torture is OK, that "Guns, God and gays" are what America really cares about...Obama's appointment is a masterful political move and I congratulate him on having a judge with a real record, not a "stealth" judge like our Chief Justice, who is also a gray matter lightweight.

Here's some good links on this upcoming "battle" (as usual some in the MSM has to make a sporting event out of it.:)
