Stephanie-being a native Californian 4th generation, my daughter 5th and her daughter 6th I so agree it should be divided into 2 states! It is so totally different S. and N. like two different worlds. L.A. votes for props that totally don't work up in Eureka and vice versa. It's just crazy!

Yep, Sarah is right. Illinois is part of Tornado Alley. The worst tornado in history was the Tri-State Tornado in 1925 which started in Missouri, plowed across Southern Illinois, and ended in Indiana. Murphysboro Illinois was the hardest hit and my grandma was from there. It killed lots of school age children. After listening to the screams of people trapped in their homes and buildings while they burned or were crushed to death my grandma ended up petrified of tornadoes her entire life. She was in another tornado when she was older.

Sometimes it makes me wonder if people in urban areas who actually encounter people who aren't like them are more able to tolerate differences than people who live in more homogeneous areas.

Colorado's the same way. There's the very blue Denver/Boulder and the ski resorts. Then we have the rest of the state.

It was the same when I lived in California. It really should be two states. Northern - down to about Santa Cruz - just above. Southern - everything below Santa Cruz. Two different worlds.

I usually find myself explaining to non-Americans that you just can't generalize about the US and its people. It divides into about 5 overall sections: Northeast, South (which includes the southeast, Northwest, Southwest and the middle. Well, then you have to add Alaska, Texas and Hawaii, though Hawaii can be included in the West. That's how I've learned to see it, at least, living out of the states for so many years and having to explain it so dang often.

Not an easy task.

Sometimes I do think that it would be a lot easier if we were 2 countries. Slight correction on the facts, here in Illinois we do have tornadoes. We've had 2 in my town alone.

Whew, I know Madison is blue as blue can be, but the rest of the state is not always with us. So, I was going add cheese curds and bratwurst as one of the pluses of having us, but let's go with healthy cranberries instead, since this is a weight loss site.

Very funny but of course I kind of felt sorry for the red states after reading it. Poor Alabama - it's actually really pretty there. LOL.

Thank goodness I'm from Illinois!! But seriously we're not always blue, though we have been of late. We usually have a GOP governor and we did produce Ronald Reagan. Ahem. Yech. I'm sorry but I'm not a fan of Ronnie. His trickle down economics and deregulation are responsible for planting the seeds of the gigantic mess we're in now.

no, please. I have two sisters in Alaska who I love - and one of them at least is embarrassed as hell about Palin!

I love this quote:

Boy am I glad MO has turned light blue! After yesterdays HUGE Obama rally, its getting darker blue all the time emoticon

(I did not write this)

Dear Red States...

We've decided we're leaving. We intend to form our own country, and
we're taking the other Blue States with us.

In case you aren't aware, that includes Hawaii, Oregon,Washington,
Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois and all the Northeast. We
believe this split will be beneficial to the nation, and especially
to the people of the new country of New California.

To sum up briefly: You get Texas, Oklahoma and all the slave states.
We get stem cell research and the best beaches. We get Elliot
Spitzer. You get Ken Lay.

We get the Statue of Liberty. You get Dollywood.
We get Intel and Microsoft. You get WorldCom.
We get Harvard. You get Ole' Miss.
We get 85 percent of America's venture capital and entrepreneurs. You
get Alabama.
We get two-thirds of the tax revenue, you get to make the red states
pay their fair share.

Since our aggregate divorce rate is 22 percent lower than the
Christian Coalition's, we get a bunch of happy families. You get a
bunch of single moms.

Please be aware that Nuevo California will be pro-choice and
anti-war, and we're going to want all our citizens back from Iraq at
once. If you need people to fight, ask your evangelicals. They have
kids they're apparently willing to send to their deaths for no
purpose, and they don't care if you don't show pictures of their
children's caskets coming home. We do wish you success in Iraq, and
hope that the WMDs turn up, but we're not willing to spend our
resources in Bush's Quagmire.

With the Blue States in hand, we will have firm control of 80 percent
of the country's fresh water, more than 90 percent of the pineapple
and lettuce, 92 percent of the nation's fresh fruit, 95 percent of
America's quality wines (you can serve French wines at state dinners)
90 percent of all cheese, 90 percent of the high tech industry, most
of the U.S. low-sulfur coal, all living redwoods, sequoias and
condors, all the Ivy and Seven Sister schools, plus Harvard, Yale,
Stanford, Cal Tech and MIT.

With the Red States, on the other hand, you will have to cope with 88
percent of all obese Americans (and their projected health care
costs), 92 percent of all U.S. mosquitoes, nearly 100 percent of the
tornadoes, 90 percent of the hurricanes, 99 percent of all Southern
Baptists, virtually 100 percent of all televangelists, Rush Limbaugh,
Bob Jones University, Clemson and the University of Georgia.

We get Hollywood and Yosemite, thank you.

Additionally, 38 percent of those in the Red states believe Jonah was
actually swallowed by a whale, 62 percent believe life is sacred
unless we're discussing the death penalty or gun laws, 44 percent say
that evolution is only a theory, 53 percent that Saddam was involved
in 9/11 and 61 percent of you crazy b*****ds believe you are people
with higher morals then we lefties.

By the way, we're taking the good pot, too. You can have that dirt
weed they grow in Mexico.

Peace out,
Blue States

you want to be."
