Maisie - my nicknames are also between Mel and Lissa, like your stepdaughter - I was a Missy, too (still am, to some people), though as I get older, Missy's more a family and old friend thing.

Stephanie - thanks for the enthusiastic welcome, and as you said, I'm thus far enjoying what I read here. Hopefully, I can "meet" some more folks, and add some to the conversations, since as you likely can tell, I'm usually never at a loss for talking too much, with my voice or my fingers! lol

And I agree with everyone else - I'd love to read about what was going on live at the VP debate.

Though it surely won't change my opinion of Palin or the GOP. I've spent some of the evening reading on NPR of the GOP's planned attempts to use smear or misleading tactics to try and garner some of the support away back to McCain and Co, which is pretty typical for how the GOP seems to do politics. My husband keeps telling me not to worry (since I get pretty passionate about this, a la yelling at my television and such), that people will see these as desperation tactics and those with a brain won't be fooled by it; however, since the last two presidential "elections", nothing surprises me as to what people will allow to color their opinions.

I sure hope he is right, because Obama and Biden are certainly two people I want to be running this country I love, and taking it back from those who've done their best to undermine it.

So...yes - I'd love to read more details - which I am quite sure would be very "un - boring", plus anything that continues to prove the inadequacy of the Republican ticket can only cheer me! lol

When she first hit the scene, she didn't have as much of that Northern "Fargo" kind of accent in her voice. Thursday she took the Ohyoubetcha meter and cranked it to 11. It seemed forced after a while.

I live in St Louis and I found out "day of" that I could have "easily" gotten tickets at the McCain-Palin headquarters. LOL I told the person who informed me that I wouldn't be going near that place (and besides, I'm working on a second advanced degree and I have a Thursday nite class). I saw most of it on TV (b/c I left class early!)

The co-worker who told me about the tickets was suprised I don't feel like I'm better off now than I was 8 years ago! Let's see...to begin with, I got married in July 2007. We still have 2 condos to sell so we can buy a house that is "ours". No way am I better off!!!

That's interesting to hear from you as someone in the audience.

The only thing I can say, and gosh yer darn tootin' it ain't in defense of her - is that her audience was the whole country. She was tawkin' ta Joe Six-Pack 'n hockey moms in the livin' rooms uv america. You betcha. Not to the liberal elite snobs...

I really do wish the baby had been at home - in the hotel - in bed. And why aren't the kids in school? Is she homeschooling them on the trail?

Save us from her. All I can do is be grateful that the polls were not in her favor. Any faith I had in the American public would have been gone. But she's not fooling everyone.

For those of us who were present at the debate we came away with a different perspective than those of you who watched it on TV. Maybe because the camera wasn't always on her on TV.

I found Palin's folksy demeanor stupid and disturbing and my sentiment was echoed by most of the other people who were near me at the debate too. I was always told when giving a speech that you need to know your audience. She was in urban academia in St. Louis, Missouri at one of the best universities in the country, not in a pig lot. We were wondering if she was going to do moose calls or yodel.

She looked like a deer in the headlights. She was constantly pouring over her notes, frantically looking for the answers, I'm not even sure she even knew what she was saying as she appeared so nervous. She avoided answering questions, answered them incorrectly on numerous occasions, and changed the subject as much as possible.

My impression of her in jargon she can understand - "Smart like rock, swift like tree."

That face........that voice. Please, save me.

Hi Melissa and welcome. We have some good conversations here more often than not!

I loved the team image and like having it on my spark page. I am proud to be a very blue liberal. I "stole" an image from a friend on SP, but I've not used it as my profile image ... yet. It's

"Am I Liberal or just well-educated?"

I'm sure I have sparkfriends on other teams who are republican and since we don't discuss politics in those teams, there's no reason to tick them off. But if they ask me about politics or make political comments, they get my unedited version.

welcome. welcome. welcome, Melissa!

Thank you for the welcome, Maisie! - and Melissa is my actual name so you are correct but, on the boards, most people just say "Lissa", which is fine. (Actually, most say "Lisa", they miss the other "s" - I appreciate that you found it!)

And as an aside, Faith is my middle name, but, some people have mistaken it to mean I'm very religious, which, as an agnostic generally, that's kinda off the mark! lol

As one of my so-workers says, if Palin can walk across a stage in a bathing suit, she's not lacking in confidence. It just doesn't give her any more substance.

I just joined this team - looks like a good one!

Palin was a "professional pageant" contestant - I don't think she's got any trouble playing off her "cutesiness" for the audience - that's her strong suit. That's about all she has - she's got no business ever, EVER being in charge of the country. Her winking and folky ca - ca was making me almost physically ill. I prefer my country's leaders to be somewhat more well read and well spoken than the average Joe - Six-Pack, Wine-Cooler, or otherwise.
I'll give her that she did a reasonable job presenting herself, but...her accusations at Biden were unfounded, her facts were inaccurate - far more than any of Biden's faux pas' - and when, as someone else said, the expectations were so low for her, anything that lacked a complete screwup would be considered success. No substance, only sound bites (true to the Republican ways). That maverick ca-ca - far from it, the both of them.

An aside to LadyIrish - also very sorry for your loss, truly. And, to MorrisDatter - what a great quote you have! Makes you think, for sure.

I thought it was pretty amusing that the only thing she seemed to know anything about was energy, and even that wasn't much. "Blah, blah, Alaska, blah, blah, John McCain's a maverick, blah, blah, energy in Alaska, blah, blah, blah."

My friend made "Maverick" into a drinking game. He's hung over today...

Palin's strategy in the debate was to pull all questions back to talking points and duck the ones she couldn't. It's a good move, especially if you know little about the topics asked because it fills up time. Does it make you confident in her as a leader? Not really. As Nixon said years ago, "A VP won't win you an election but can lose you the election." She didn't lose him the election last night but she really did McCain few favors.

Biden's strategy had two goals: Don't give the GOP fodder for ads in the next month and he did great at that. He was on point and professional. He did something Palin didn't do which was answer the question first hand and then go into his attack points. The second goal was to nail McCain to the problems we've had over the last eight years and that was done masterfully. With Palin worried about just keeping the talking points straight and holding her own for 90 minutes, Biden had an hour and a half to tee off on McCain's record almost unopposed. He hit him on the economy, on Iraq, on Spain, on nuclear proliferation and did it all Biden hit McCain early and often and the only defense Palin gave was that "You people keep looking back in the past"

In hindsight, last night wasn't a knock out blow for Obama/Biden but if this was a boxing match, McCain would be answering the bell this morning with sore ribs and a swollen eye.

I thought Biden was wonderful. Of course, Palin "exceeded expectations"! They were so low to begin with, she would have had to do something extremely stupid not to. I think she has some common sense and knows what to watch for now. It's also easier when she has it written down for her, unlike in her interviews. Even so, she says she's not going to answer the questions, she's just gonna talk to the American people and let them know her track record? I thought a debate was about answering the questions and debating the issues! Just shows she is still incapable of talking intelligently because she is not qualified.

I loved that Biden didn't let her get away with playing the "mom" card. Just because she's a woman doesn't mean she has dibs on parenthood! And the baby should have been home in bed, but then some would say "where is the baby? Is she ashamed of him?" That's one of those lose/lose situations. I thought the girl who brought the baby on stage was the pregnant daughter. No? I wasn't really looking at them.

At any rate, Biden won, and it really didn't change things. I'm glad that debate is over!

Of course Ms. Palin exceeded all expectations because she didn't fall on her face one time in the debate. She didn't have a single Katie Couric moment like when she couldn't name a single Supreme Court decision other Roe v. Wade she disagreed with or name one newspaper she has read. She didn't have a single "deer in the headlights" incident.

Palin was well prepared by her handlers. She had all their rhetoric down. People who already like her will find no reason not to. Her bit about rights for gay couples will ruffle a few feathers among the religious right but she was evasive on it. She left herself enough wiggle room so she can win them back though if she publically spouts anti-gay viewpoints but she might loose a few moderate voters along the way.

Mr Biden handily won the debate. His knowledge was superior. His answers were responsive, thoughtful, and thourough. I was amazed when Ms. Palin ignored the question and asked to talk about energy some more. The way she answered questions was to simply go onto the script of talking points on the subject at hand.

Listening to Biden I remembered how well I thought he did in the last Democratic debate before he pulled out of the race. He inspires me. Hopefully, voters will realize that McCain/Palin will not create any change except for less money for the middle class and more deaths in war. Every time she talked about winning the war, I felt like we were at a pep rally in high school instead of a reasoned debate.

Hi Ladyirish, you have been through a great deal and I'm sorry for your pain. I felt it too when Joe Biden talked about his family. Sarah Palin, in my beliefs, just doesn't get what so many of us need. I feel that the McCain/Palin campaign just wants to "win." How many times did we hear that word last night during the debate?
What about when she said that John McCain knows how to win a war? Which war is she talking about?

I am a mom, and Sarah Stepford has nothing in common with me, either. My son was disabled in an accident and my daughter passed away. I never got to to go a hockey or soccer game. When Joe choked up describing the accident, I broke down. I was right there in the same shoes. How dare she say she knows how everyone feels? And how dare she smirk and wink at us?

Between her performance last night and McBush's stammering on Friday, I suspect Republicans may be getting nervous. And given that McCain just surrendered a key battleground state, I'm more hopeful than ever.

Sarah Palin does not represent what I stand for and I don't have anything in common with her. I'm not even a Mom! What about the single people in the United States? What, we don't matter? She was talking about herself like she has a lot of diversity in her life. I really don't see it.

I feel that John McCain is against government-run anything because he was raised by an Admiral in the United States Navy and he has always had some form of government medical and education. He just doesn't see that there are many of us out here that need the government to fund us with school and medicine so we can get on our feet.

The Veteran's Administration isn't taking any new applicants for health insurance coverage unless you were hurt in any of the wars. What about the people who served and didn't get hurt? They don't need medical coverage too? I understand the government must take care of wounded Vets, please don't think I don't have any compassion there, I just feel that All veterans should be covered.

This Presidential Election is soo important! Please, no more of the same!

you know what? I can't explain it, but I came away from that debate feeling so good and calm. I've been raging angry since her interviews with Couric - to the point of finding myself stuffing down the anger with food! Haven't done that in about 2 years.

But Joe Biden's clear, intelligent presence and complete belief in Barack Obama did something to me. And seeing her folksy winky inane non-answers up against his, put me at ease. did I already say this here?! Well, I'm trying to put a finger on why I felt that way - and still do - after the debate.

We aren't over the top yet and we still have four weeks to go, but just hearing the clarity of Biden's deep belief in Obama's plans and their deep belief and care in and of the American people and this country, let me C A L M.

OK - enough. I just need to relish this feeling.

I thought Sarah Palin made a complete joke of this debate, as John McCain did of his. You can't talk DOWN to people's level...it makes them feel stupid. The way she kept saying over and OVER again about how she has been there...with Joe Six-Pack, etc...and how Joe Biden hasn't.

Did you see Joe Biden choke up when he had to defend his parenting skills? How horrible for him to get caught up in something so personal as the death of his wife and child.

I can't believe how much Joe Biden had to CATER to S.P's needs. You know, damn well, had this been Hillary or a man against a man, they would have TRAMPLED her to the ground. But Joe needs to play it cool, or he will come across as sexist. I really wish he could have laid into her like all of us really wanted him to do.

She is unprepared, unintelligent, not funny, and a complete mess on stage. How many times was there a pause because she didn't know what to say. She probably didn't even know what the question was. And seriously, who says..."I have been at this, what? 5 weeks now!" Like we are supposed to cut her some slack because she has been here 5 weeks. She could have DECLINED the position if she didn't feel she was ready.

I know I am raging, and rambling, but I am in complete shock that more people in this country aren't scared of this woman.

Look up Matt Damon Sarah Palin on YouTube. It's quite hilarious - and it's probably how I look and sound right now. :)

hahaha. Sarah Palin made me laugh at a debate for the first time ever.

Of course she repeats herself...she has nothing real to say...she won't answer the questions asked of her because she hasn't been able to rehearse those answers...and yes, the winking, give me a break. Her response about climate change...more of what we've been hearing for the past 8 years..."we're going to deny it so we don't have to take action"...I thought Biden did a good job of being vice-presidential...he has the experience that she so clearly lacks.

Joe Biden did well. SP's performance was folksy and programmed and rehersed. She performed well tonight. She's smart. She doesn't have a clue about foreign policy, though.
Now, lets move on and press discussion on the economic issues and McBush's inability to separate himself from this failed administration.

I can't keep track of Trig and Track and Truck. I did feel the poor little baby should have been in bed and not out with them on stage so late. Sad for the baby.

OH, yes: her statement about her excitement in working with the constitution to expand the role of the vice president was an eye-opener, to say the least. Whoa. And Biden hopped on that well - very well with his condemnation of Cheney and his attempt at re-definition of the VP not being part of the executive branch. Cheney is the worst VP we've ever had - though Spiro Agnew should also be a lesson from the past not forgotten!

Well, for some reason I am more calm tonight. I've been wracked with worry and anger - stuffing some of it down with food and I DO NOT want to go that route! But I'm more calm. I'm not sure why. Perhaps because I felt Biden did such a good job of tying Bush to McSame and pointing out SO WELL that McSame's policies are absolute continuations of Bush's disastrous presidency.

I absolutely congratulate Biden on successfully doing that, on answering questions intelligently and wisely and honestly, and never getting in a dangerous stance of demeaning her. She's slippery - and a good debate has to include answers from both sides. She had her agenda and got it out no matter what. Fine - but one has to answer the questions first.

But I'm calmer now. We can't be cocky, as it isn't won yet. But we have a good strong ticket with good, strong policies for change. I'm calmer. Huge sigh of relief - for now.

For a while, I thought I was hearing recitation. She was more of a contestant than a candidate. I thought I was watching a spelling bee with some of Gov. Palin’s responses. It was so reciting, so automatic.

She said she wasn’t going to listen to Gwen Ifill tonight. She also said didn't like "the filter of mainstream media," which means she’s not going to do more serious interviews like Katie Couric.

I also thought it was interesting that Sarah Palin wanted to enlarge the role for the vice president. That was extraordinary and requires more exploration for the media.

So, in essence, tonight, what a statement: “I’m not playing by the rules, and I want more power.” There's not that much humility there.

GO CHRIS!!!!

I thought Biden did and EXCELLENT job of arguing about McCain NOT being a m*verick. I am so sick of the word!! And Nu-cu-ler. I thought we'd be past that with bush out of the way. nuclear!!!!!

But more to the point: She is a champion of a no-answer answer. Very irritating. But she did get her talking points straight tonight. You have to give her credit for that. But no-answer answers simply out-weighed her "verbiage" as she likes to call it.

lmao about winking! Why did she keep winking? My teenage boys said she was trying to be the sexy librarian lol

I thought she did fine, she did what she needed to do (not be a blathering idiot) Clearly Biden won and he did it in a way without looking like a "youknowwhat". This debate was not a game changer.

Has anyone else noticed how often she repeats herself?
