I'll admit I listen to Sean Hannity on my way home, only because I think he is a "blow hard" and is full of himself. He does make good points, however he dies follow the talking points of the Administration and that of Limbaugh.
Problem with Fox is mainly the spin they are able to create. There are few reporters that are good (Neil Cavuto) and some that are trash (Bill O'reilly).
Fox was smart in making a deal with the Government to be aired to our troops around the world. There are many that become "hooked" and become "Lifers" of the channel. It's like growing up with Coke in the fridge and declaring it the best soda in the World, while others drink Pepsi. I have family who serve in our great military and they watch Fox, here and away, and their family does the same. Kinda like drinking the Kool-Aid.
Good for you on supporting your kids and tolerating your Dad. I didn't mention that my parents divorced when I was 19 and I'm now 50. They were middle of the road to just left of in philosophies but voted republican. So I got a fairly decent and well rounded upbringing. That is why it has been so sad to see the change. Rush isn't just wrong but he's mean spirited too. Oh well. Hang in there.
Kim, we're like sisters! My dad always seemed like a normal guy when I was growing up, but since Rush got on the radio he's been replaced by a dittohead pod. It's eerie. The same person who loves to spend time outdoors and gardening believes it's okay if corporate flunkies carpet the earth with genetically engineered corn that makes it worthwhile to use more pesticides. Eeeeeek!
At least it was always easy to see that my liberal mom was always doing the right thing. I am also proud to provide an example to my daughter; she has gotten into arguments with other kids at her high school when they parrot ignorant statements like "you either support the war or you're a terrorist" or "all the mexicans should go back where they came from" (we're in Texas, for chrissakes)!
My father believes FOX news. He is as right wing as they come. My mother is as left wing as they come. I try to see both sides. I even tried to feel, think, experience and empathize with the right, it was an experiment, walk in their shoes - but I couldn't it felt so wrong. Truth is perception. Our reality is how we perceive the world. So we have millions of different "truths" out there. I am proud to be a left wing liberal. As such I embrace those who think and feel and perceive differently. I like to be a witness of good, kind, loving, generous, charitable life. I too feel icky when I hear some of the innanities coming from the right, so misinformed. I think the real crime is those who just don't care. If it doesn't affect their direct sphere of influence, their reality, their world, then who cares. This is dangerous. I think Liberals are more likely to care about how things affect not just themselves and their families, but all citizens. I know that is a generalization, but I think we are more inclusive in our beliefs than the right. Oh I don't know - I'm rambling. But Steph I so understand how you feel. I get so angry I want to hit someone or something and thats not good if you are a pacifist. So I don't.

I will acknowledge that I love to watch Jon Stewart and The Daily Show. And I will acknowledge that, yesssssss, he spends most of his time making fun of the right wing, but, hey, their arguments and "facts" are so easy to poke holes in. But I also know that The Daily Show is a satire, fergodssake! FOX portrays itself as real news. I can see the twisted "facts" that FOX spews. I also know that it's a pipe dream to ever hope that the right will see how much dis-information FOX puts out. But it scares/worries/depresses me to see it and know that a huge number of Americans laps it up. It makes me happy that I don't have to watch the media in the States on a daily basis, since I don't live there. But it's my home and it's my country and it hurts. And it saddens me.
I'm talking to myself here, since you're probably all asleep over there, but what else it new? such is life on the other side of this planet that I love so much. Stephanie

We've had several threads here about the mass media and where to get the truth - and comments that conservatives believe FOX news. I just made the mistake of clicking on a thread in a conservative group on this site. And in skimming what was being written, I came to this: ------ "Although I want to bop him in the face sometimes (LOL), it is good that Alan Combs (as well as the other Democratic & Liberal Strategists)is there because it shows how fair and balance Fox News really is. Besides we get to hear their crazy reasoning and can justify to ourselves why we feel the way we do. " ----- I've never been naive enough to think that any of them would ever believe that there is news beyond FOX, but it curls my toes to read that. It's one of the reasons I refused to vote or discuss politics for many years. Because I know how much dis-information there is out there and all I wanted was to be able to go somewhere-anywhere to get the truth.
I suppose the years have taught me that there is no truth. Everything is colored by everyone and every situation is interpreted by everyone. Luckily I've learned to sort the "truth" out for myself. But posts like that scare/sadden/worry me. The whole thread scared/saddened/worried me. But it also just makes me want to fight harder to get a democrat in the presidency. As McGrath calls him, we don't need McSame/McBush. This country and this world cannot survive 4 more years of that.
I ain't gunna look at that group again. Dumb move - but you do have to keep yourself informed about what they are "thinking" - if you can call it that. Stephanie - makes me want to drink, but what good would THAT do?! :-)
