Aniduck,

Well said! I will try to catch that show too. Scarey but not surprising, what the farmers said.

Finding foods to eat in this world reminds me of that gauntlet of swinging sharp blades people ran through in earlier times. It surprises me how few people actually ask about their foods in a grocery store or farmer's market. So glad to have fund this forum. - Holly

Yes, Holly, there's certainly a history and an ongoing increase of that sort of thing coming from the food manufacturing/government agency circus. I just watched "King Corn" for the second time and was reminded of how gov. interference (Farm Bill) has quietly eroded farm products. There were probably some good intentions at the beginning but the fingers of greedy people/corps, utilizing regulations for their own profit, have corrupted it from the beginning. I was struck again by an Iowa corn farmer saying "Oh yeah, we grow crap" and another saying "Oh no, we don't eat the corn we grow; no way"! And, "the government pays us to grow this; if they didn't we would be out of business."
Amazing isn't it??

Hospitals are terrific for traumatic care; for acute care. They do a really, really good job in saving lives when it’s a sudden bleeding emergency. But in terms of chronic care, they’re terrible; (that is) in terms of the illnesses that most people have, endure, that cost the most money, that last the longest and ultimately die from. -Dr. Andrew Saul

Not Frankenfood! For most of us, shopping for healthy, clean and ethically prepared foods is difficult. For those out there with a curious historical sense how our foods got so dirty research Dr. Harvey W. Wiley and The Poison Squad". It was the beginning of the Food and Drug Administration. There are several links. I heard this on the radio (stream it if you can). In the 1900's he took 12 consenting male research subjects and subjected them to food additives (toxins) like Borax for years. It's scarey and interesting. -Holly

I tried to go back on the NOVA site but did not see it. It was about 6 months ago. If you Google "plaque found in mummies arteries" you can get some info and if I see the NOVA program again I will note it. - Holly

I can't help but ask questions about what NOVA reported. Like: What class of people they were studying? Lower? Middle? Upper? A lot of ancient people (it's reported) living wealthy lives ate poorly because they simply could. At least the poorer classes weren't stuck eating at McD's! LOL!
And: What other foods did they eat? -can't live on berries.
What part of the world were these mummies dug up?
Did the NOVA program talk about these questions?

I just saw a NOVA special and they were opening up the bodies of ancient mummies to unearth secrets of their lifestyles.I think they said they ate lots of different berries but the most interesting part was they found plaque in their arteries! -Holly

Good article from Chris Kresser. Obesity was nearly non-existent in the 1800's yet people ate many more calories than we do now. Look at the nutrient dense foods!! Look at the non-nutritious junk most people eat now. Let's "EAT WELL"!
