They were able to get 800k signatures which is incredible...we'll see what the majority of the state says about it on voting day.

There might be better ways to get the word out about GMO's. Most people watch TV and if the money that has been put into getting this legislation was put into TV specials and ads maybe people would be informed and maybe many people would boycott the products that aren't labeled. Personally I'm getting sick in the heart that we have come to believe that the government will protect us from the unhealthy stuff that we are so afraid of. They won't and they don't...and we are overly fearful. Corporations really play on our fears. This should be all grass-roots, independent, social networking by the people. Getting the government involved to take care of our complaints is almost always a mistake.

Hospitals are terrific for traumatic care; for acute care. They do a really, really good job in saving lives when it’s a sudden bleeding emergency. But in terms of chronic care, they’re terrible; (that is) in terms of the illnesses that most people have, endure, that cost the most money, that last the longest and ultimately die from. -Dr. Andrew Saul

*shrugs* I think they want to get the word out about GMO. I just asked my co-workers what a GMO is and nobody had a clue. I think that corporations will have to make major changes as well as they don't offer us real food to begin with so I think it goes both ways. Small businesses are going to feel it, but big corporations don't play fair so in punishing them the small guys get hurt in the process. I don't know how things can be balanced out in a way where small businesses who are doing the right things don't get hurt.

The customers, distributors and friends who pick up food at Joel Salatin's farm can read his full disclosure. It's hanging on the wall; everything anybody needs to know about how he grows, raises and cares for his farm products.

Big food corp already has massive machinery pumping out labels and paper pushers who are trained and hired to do all the paperwork. This legislation won't put a dent in their business. But Joel and other small, sustainable farms...just think of how it will impact them. It isn't just about putting a label on things; it's about all the government forms, constant visits by inspectors who can close the farm down instantly if they think Joel isn't doing things "right". And, since this is going to be run mostly by boards made up of big food corp executives...hello!..., do you think they might just LIKE to see him closed down?? Ya think??

Just got an email from EWG asking me to contact about 5-6 of my friends to go vote for the labeling.

If the voters go for it it will be nice to see GMO labeling on products. I doubt big companies will not revert to making non-GMO products. More people see the label, they won't buy it and will go to small farms and what not. I'll go read that article you noted right now.

The big corp food manufacturers will breeze right through this new legislation and the small, organic, sustainable farmers will suffer and some will probably have to go out of business. This is how the government "fixes" things

I have been "in" for a while now but have recently pulled out and remain uncommited on the subject after reading what our dear friend Joel Salatin wrote.

I saw after reading that, that this is exactly what happened way back when all the organic food people were clambering to get the government to regulate the organic food industry because there were some unscrupulous people selling non-organic food stuffs under an "organic" label.

While that was going on several organizations came together (like Oregon Tilth and California CCOF) that were non-profit, non government boards that had their own certification "stickers". This was a tremendous help in choosing true organic foods.

When people started the campaign to get the government to regulate organic foods I just about went ballistic. WHY would we want the government to step into our well-run food sources?? I knew it would go badly--it has. Now you can buy more cheap, unhealthy, crappy groceries that have the USDA Organic stamp of approval. Take Organic Pastures brand for just one example. Didn't we SEE this coming??? Organic junk!

The same thing is going to happen when the gov steps into the GMO labeling laws. These laws get tweaked and pressed into whatever shape the powerful big food corps need them to be in in order to keep the profits rolling in.

And who suffers the most? Is it the consumer? Is it the organic farmer?

Yes, I too would like to see foods labeled as to whether or not they contain GMOs. And guess what. The companies who produce non-GMO products are ALREADY labeling them because they are proud of selling us healthy food.

Read Joel Salatin's article.

I buy a few of the items from the right side list (Pacific foods, Sunfood, Nutiva, Earthbound farms).
I don't buy ANYTHING from the agribusiness side. Funny enough. lol

Good one!! Really confused since it seems like it is very poorly written. I do, however, believe I am voting YES, I am hoping this is the beginning of getting food back to normal! I have noticed that a lot of things that I buy have the label on there and I buy that before the other brand. I do want to know what I'm eating. I'm not sure why this is acting like some people have to follow the rules and others don't. I am still reading on it but will vote YES.
