I track my calories and nutrients quite carefully and this has helped me gain new perspective on portion sizes and just what types of foods I might require - like more protein, or fat, or whatever. I have lost 18 lbs so far but I imagine that the day will come when I won't likely be so religious about my monitoring, as long as my weight does not begin to go up!

Weighing myself everyday and calorie counting are both in my blood (bad habit these days)...though I don't calorie count everyday, but I do track my macros religiously because it helps me with any specific goal I may have for my body (fat loss right now of course). I basically can look at my food and know how much to eat at this point...been at this for 4 years + so far. But for weight loss which I don't have to do anymore I have to count calories in that instance only.

I'm with you Laura - I think for me the problem was the heading "calorie counting AT BEST is a waste of time" "At best" is really not true, at best it helps some people be accountable and keep their eating and weight under control.

I like to track primarily to look at my macros for the day. Some days I want to eat more calories, and some days less but as long as I fall around my macro goals I feel pretty good. I also learn trends about my eating, such as if I eat more carbs in a day, I eat more calories overall. I can compare that to high fat days, which makes me realize that I can eat smaller amounts of calorie-dense fatty foods yet eat less calories overall. I also notice that on days I eat more fruit, my fiber is higher than on primarily veggie days...I used to be obsessed with the calories, but now that I eat clean my attitude has changed and counting calories is a tool to use.

I guess you can do what works for you and I'll do what works for me.

There is truth to this.
The minute I start tracking calories I overeat... go figure.
Intuitive eating, watching/listening to body signals works for me.

Sounds great, but for me I do need to keep track of my calories...we are all different.

First off I don't hate it, but then I am an anal type of person who is a scientist. I love keeping track of things in a spread sheet, graphing it, making comparisons to see what works better, etc. I am also a person that does better if I weigh myself daily - another thing that works for some but not for others.

I do love the message though - and I do eat clean and put nutritious things in my body. I have recently given up sugar (all forms but what is found in fruit) which was really not hard to do. I thought the giving up sugar would kill me, but once I got it out of my system I don't miss it. I think that is really amazing (for me).

thanks for sharing the article

I haven't read all of this but I am loving it so far! I have stopped counting my calories and have been eating clean (I am still learning) and listening to my body. I haven't gained but haven't lost either. My husband on the other hand is loosing rapidly ( he is larger) Since I'm thinking it has a lot to do with my age ( mid 40's) and I also need to start moving more. Thank you for finding this and sharing!

At worst, it will frustrate you, influence you to eat non-nutritive foods and very possibly cause weight gain as it has done for many people.
Have a look at this article:

Hospitals are terrific for traumatic care; for acute care. They do a really, really good job in saving lives when it’s a sudden bleeding emergency. But in terms of chronic care, they’re terrible; (that is) in terms of the illnesses that most people have, endure, that cost the most money, that last the longest and ultimately die from. -Dr. Andrew Saul
