No. I don't think we need to. We had Rhode Island Reds before and I've never seen one fly up in the air. This coop has a very high fence, so I doubt they can get out. It's too high for the deer to jump too. I think the reds are a pretty heavy breed.
We put a "ladder" in the hen house so they could get up to the nests and a perch my DH made for them.
So funny! He thought the chickens would like to look out the window so he put a window in for them with the perch in front. When the chickens go in we can see them looking out at us through the window. They (and he) are too funny!

I caught 2 of my young ducks lifting off just a little when they ran and flapped at the same time. I thought, "uh oh, time to clip their wings". I'd never done it before this afternoon. It feels kind of sad to do that to them but I guess it beats being eaten by a coyote if they get over the fence. Four of my ducks are Mallards. Like YES they can fly! They didn't seem to care that their wings were clipped. they just continued to waddle around quacking, swimming and having a jolly ol' ducky time. I keep wondering how it will be when I decide to kill one for our dinner. I know it will be hard for me but I've got to get over it if I'm going to eat meat.

Do you have to clip your chicken's wings? I've read that some chickens are lighter weight than other and you have to do that. Watched an on-line video of a lady clipping her chicken's wing. It's a very good video.

Hospitals are terrific for traumatic care; for acute care. They do a really, really good job in saving lives when it’s a sudden bleeding emergency. But in terms of chronic care, they’re terrible; (that is) in terms of the illnesses that most people have, endure, that cost the most money, that last the longest and ultimately die from. -Dr. Andrew Saul

Beautiful! Yummy!!
Can't wait for my adult ducks to finish their molt and my juveniles to finish maturing so I can have eggs again. There is just NO comparing store-bought, grocery store, factory farm (CAFOs) eggs with these beautiful, home grown eggs. And the meat you get is superb! I love my ducks!
So glad Laura, that you are fully enjoying your new home, new property and healthy lifestyle.

Beautiful! You are so right about the difference. The pale yellow of the store bought eggs, not to mention the taste; so gross!

I tried to go to the link but I got a message from google saying my current page wasn't allowed. Sometimes, I don't know what's wrong with google. So, what color are they? I wish I could get some better eggs than the one's I get from the farmer's market here. They are just plain brown. My mom has some that lay chocolate colored eggs. I think it's pretty cool.
