Hospitals are terrific for traumatic care; for acute care. They do a really, really good job in saving lives when it’s a sudden bleeding emergency. But in terms of chronic care, they’re terrible; (that is) in terms of the illnesses that most people have, endure, that cost the most money, that last the longest and ultimately die from. -Dr. Andrew Saul

Genetically Modified Ingredients - Not currently listed on the label because the GMO industry (Monsanto and DuPont) absolutely does not want people to know which foods contain GMOs. Nearly all conventionally grown corn, soy and cotton are GMOs. They're linked to severe infertility problems and may even cause the bacteria in your body to produce and release a pesticide in your own gut. If you're not eating organic corn, you're definitely eating GMO corn. (http://www.naturalnews.com/026426_GMO_foo

Acrylamides - Toxic, cancer-causing chemicals formed in foods when carbohydrates are exposed to high heat (baking, frying, grilling). They're present in everything from bread crusts to snack chips, and because they aren't intentional ingredients, acrylamides do NOT have to be listed on labels.

This is most likely in the artificial ingredients list or natural.........lol

I don't think they benefit from it......I believe that some do think it isn't "that" bad for you. If you had it once a year or you know in a treat once in a great while, I'm sure it isn't going to be horribly bad for you. BUT..........it is in everything........So you aren't getting a little once in a while it is in all your bread, dressings, condiments, processed stuff, spaghetti sauce, bbq sauces, cereals, I have found it even is some seasonings that I used to use thinking it was just a seasoning. So it is being consumed allllllll the time. Back to the clean idea........ it is man made so why go there? They have ketchup that doesn't have it any more, so I buy that, organic.
Also, did you know it is in your milk? and your milk for every glass you drink you are getting a full shot of hormones. They keep the cows pumped up with so much hormones so they keep producing. Only buy organic. Actually, if I have a protein shake or granola I use coconut milk, sooooo good!
Also, a lot of fat free food contains it (HFCS). I find it odd that FF food is number one selling product but we as a nation are so huge.........and have health problems. Have you ever known a generation that has had so many diagnosis as Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrom, depression, juvenile diabetes and high blood pressure?
Sorry, I could go on about this for a long time! hahahahahahaha
You are so right, it is a crime to eat crappy food for cheap!

High Fructose Corn Syrup - A highly processed liquid sugar extracted with the chemical solvent glutaraldehyde and frequently contaminated with mercury (http://www.naturalnews.com/032948_high_fr

Oh, let's not get me started on paying more for clean food lol. How is it that at Subway I can get a processed meat, cheese and bread sandwich for 3.99 but a frickin salad costs $7??????? It's lettuce!!!! It's because they know that the people who are buying them have made a commitment to eating healthy and that we'll pay for healthy foods. It's disgusting how they do that. I can get a burger at McDonalds for $1.99 but a salad even there is at least $6? Thieving buggers!

The Spark article is called "The Truth about High Fructose Corn Syrup". Why would they say that though? Do they benefit from it somehow?

I totally stay away from HFCS! I'll have to find some articles about that. Of course they say it isn't bad. They wouldn't be able to sell half the crap they sell, it is all about the money. It is a cheaper ingredient to use. The bottom line about the food industry is the greed.
Why does it cost so much to eat organic, free range, grass feed. To find good food the way our ancestors ate. WE have to call it organic and pay a higher price when they used to call it FOOD. Oh, I get so made at how horrible the industry has come! It is really killing us.

Sugar is, well...pretty much just sugar. Some sugars (we're talking about sugars in the culinary sense here) have some nutrient value and some don't. Right off the top I will be honest with you--sugar will make you fat and sick; there's no getting around that. We've been told that saturated fat makes us fat and sick and that has been a very mistaken notion based on very faulty science. That's another conversation...back to sugar.

It is best to eliminate as much sugar as you possibly can from your diet. Easier said than done, right?! I know because I have a sweet tooth that I have been battling. I'M WINNING!

I suppose if you want a "clean" sugar you will have to stick to the least processed kinds:
-Raw, unfiltered honey is the best kind of honey
-Minimally processed (or refined) granulated sugar like Rapadura is the best granulated sugar. There is no such thing as "raw" granulated sugar crystals. (as in "Sugar in the Raw") The most unrefined sugar is cane juice that has been evaporated leaving the crunchy sweet stuff behind. It is brown, not white. It is still refined but minimally so.
-Agave is a marketing joke--save it for making Tequila! It's highly refined and NOT a health food.
REAL maple syrup is also cooked and minimally refined but if you can get the "grade B" you will have the most nutritious type. Absolutely stay away from those conventional pancake syrups. Read the ingredients and you will see what I'm saying.
Stay away from anything that has "high fructose corn syrup" in it--bad stuff and definitely NOT CLEAN.
There are other sugars that are out on the market like coconut sugar, palm sugar, etc. They might have a higher nutritional value but I haven't actually looked into it. I am always wary of new stuff on the market that claims "healthier". However, I do like to use coconut oil and palm oil for their superb nutrition.

Thanks for all the helpful information! I thought sugar wasn't "clean" because it was processed. Am I wrong in that thinking?

Wow, thanks for all that info!!!! Definitely a better way to look at clean eating. When my dad was in the hospital we were just overcome with thoughts of clean eating. I truly believe God was seizing an opportunity in us. We were ripe so to speak and change is easier because of it. My dad had lung cancer because he smoked, it wasn't about his diet, but for some reason food was on our minds all the time. What we wanted and committed to was eating cleaner, less processed. Making our own more often than not.

Which reminds me, I was cutting up my grape tomatoes this morning and I happened to read the label and it said "Limited Edition". I was like....um...huh? Are grape tomatoes GM??????

Yes, you guys are on the right track for sure! the term "natural" can be used anywhere anytime anyplace. It isn't regulated by government as it would be crazy to try...LOL! So never get hooked by that term. The term "organic" or "certified organic" is regulated but even that has become corrupted (don't get me going!) but certainly is your best choice.

Laura said it SO right. Clean eating should be simple and tasty. It's not the amount of ingredients but WHAT those ingredients are--plain and simple; no "rules".

Ask yourself, "What am I wanting to CLEAN out of my diet/food?"
Well, what we all want cleaned out of the food we eat is anything that would stand between our bodies and its health. The things that do that most are refined, man-made junk that is put in there for ONE reason. Yes, ONE reason! And that is to get the money from our purses into the hands of those who make this junk. Just think about that. They can put all kinds of "health" promoting words and pictures on the packages and tout them in their ads and TV commercials but none of those words or pictures will tell you the truth.

And YES, this is a learning process; takes time for information and facts to become a reality that you will be actually living by. But it WILL happen if you keep looking forward and learning.

The very best way to eat for anybody whether you are just a beginner or a long timer in this healthy eating lifestyle is to eat very simply. First off, if you don't eat stuff that comes in packages, cartons, bags, cans, bottles, etc. you won't have to even deal with those (stupid) labels! I know this is hard for a lot of you because you don't (YET!) relate personally to making things like yogurt, mayonnaise, salad dressing, etc. But these are things you can learn and you will find out that not only are they healthier but they are also easy to make, tremendously more tasty and cheaper. And you will be SO PROUD that you did it yourself.

Greek yogurt--buy yourself the plainest yogurt (ingredients: milk & cultures; period). Put it in a strainer that has been lined with a clean, porous cloth (I like to use a man's big white hanky). Cover it so that dust and critters won't get into it and let it sit for at least 8 hours. The longer you let it sit the thicker the "Greek" yogurt gets. If you want it very thick (yogurt cheese) then you must put it in the refrigerator while it drains. If you want flavors in your yogurt put them in yourself. Vanilla extract and liquid stevia is one of my favorite flavor add-in combos. Summer is coming so we will have lots of fruits and berries. Mush them up and toss 'em in. Some people like chocolate flavored yogurt--add some cocoa powder and liquid stevia or sugar. Get those artificial sweeteners out of your life!! Be creative. Ask yourself "What do I like?" What are my favorite flavors??
The liquid whey that is drained out is also useful - I'll tell you about that if you are interested.

JESUS.SAVED.ME,
Taco Seasoning

1 tbsp chili powder
2 tsp onion powder
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp powdered oregano
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp. salt

Mix all ingredients together. This makes the equivalent of a 1/4 ounce package of commercial taco seasoning mix. You can mix this into ground meat, or use as a seasoning rub before grilling chicken or skirt steak. We use it primarily for tacos and burritos and it tastes so much better than the commercially available mixes.

Yep, I was reading (I've read about it in more than one place) but it can have chemicals and just different things to have that flavoring. I used to think if it said "natural" flavoring that would be good then I read that some it might not even be "natural" lol GEESH! If I understood it right as long as there is a tad bit they can put it under that category. The more I have learned about the way our food is processed I strongly feel that there is a big tie between the government and the health industry. By the way, if I may.........I'll mail this part to you! LOL

Oh gosh! I did NOT know that. I did wonder this past week about that however. When I'm in the states I buy cases of seltzer with lemon or lime flavoring. I checked the ingredients (cuz I do that now) and it said natural flavoring and I thought...it's probably not a good thing that it doesn't actually name lemon or lime.

My name on Pinterest and FB is Crystal Wagner. On Pinterest I have a pic of my white cat, on FB it's a pic of a leather cuff with an Oscar Wilde quote. Feel free to add me to both.

I'm doing that as well, thanks to Pinterest. Gosh, how did I live before that site? LOL. I haven't had need for homemade taco seasoning yet, but it is pinned. The only seasoning package I buy is the McCormicks Bag n Season for pork chops. I LOVE them cooked with that, actually made them for my mother last night! But I can't get them in Canada anymore. I hit Lynden once a week or so for gas and groceries and when they're on sale I buy a few. I've done a quick search online trying to see if I can make my own, but haven't come across a recipe yet :(

Well, you all beat me to the "number of ingredients" topic! LOL I was thinking the same and agree. I have learned to make my own seasonings and such also, example taco seasoning. I used to grab the packet and now I don't buy any of those packet things. Keep it simple is so true! There are some areas that I'm still having a struggle with but as you said, in three more months I'll know more than I do now! :D Still struggling with eliminating sugar, and chips from my diet.

That's how I'm trying to look at it. I do read the food labels and if I don't know what something is, or if it's a chemical, I do my best to pass it up. That's not always possible though. I have to remember too that it's a learning process and I'll be far more educated 3 months from now than I am now.

I don't count the number of ingredients. I go by whether I know what each of those ingredients are. A recipe could have 20 ingredients, but if they are all whole foods I'm not going to worry about it. I'm mostly concerned with ingredients with multiple syllables that are very processed. Otherwise, I try and just enjoy!

I dont think it matters so much the number of ingredients. What does matter is the ingredients themselves.
Clean eating is something that should be simple. Not complicated.
If I make a loaf of twelve grain bread that uses whole foods it is considered clean regardless of the number of ingredients.
Reading labels is good, but knowing what the ingredients are is great!
It takes time to get into the groove. It gets easier.

That is where I am. I feel like I have made a HUGE change to the way I eat in my life and I really do check all the labels. No more of the really bad stuff but I do have a treat once in a while. I'm not sure that cheese is real clean but I eat it and am trying to cut it back. I do eat a lot more vege's and fruits for sure! It is a process and learning. As long as we keep getting healthier!!! emoticon emoticon I started with giving up soda years ago and I don't miss it at all. My salad dressing is now olive oil and balsamic vinegar, with a cheat once in a while. I'm learning to use the plain Greek yogurt to make a creamy one and still working on it. lol We need a board for us beginners!

That is why I think die hard Clean Eaters make their own. I have almost given it up. Except when I go to make a salad (potato or mac). Hmmmmmmm what about mustard? I'll have to do some digging also. I know we are supposed to eat as close to nature as possible. So hard!

Ok, it was super easy to find, but it's a LONG list of rules. Here are a few...

Drink at least 2 litres of water a day.

Eat 5-6 times a day

Drink water with a lemon wedge instead

Get label savvy "Clean foods contain just one or two ingredients. Any product with a long ingredient list is human-made and not considered clean."

So I guess mayo is out!

Right! And what about recipes? They have more than 5 ingredients, right? At least, most do. I need to look up the definition of clean eating. I have my new Clean Eating magazine here, I know there's a synopsis of clean eating near the front. I'll read that today and post my findings.

From my understanding (I could be totally off!) I thought if it was five ingredients or less it was clean. Trick being everything that is in the ingredient has to be natural, not chemical. Some things I eat have lots of herbs in it which is fine. I'm thinking my plain potato chips aren't clean though. LOL All that is in them is organic potatoes, olive oil and salt. Still I'm thinking NOT GOOD! A habit I'm looking to break. I do the dark chocolate the same also. I'll need to do some research on it but I'm hoping it is fine.
Then salsa would be a clean food and there is more than 5 in there but it is all spices and vege's. Hmmmmmmmmmm rules! lol

I eat the Liberte 0% Vanilla Greek Yogurt. So if it's vanilla, it's not clean? What about things like mayo? Or chocolate?I buy just dark chocolate, nothing in it. Is that clean?

I like to have 100 grams of the yogurt with 1/2 cup of fresh berries in the morning for breakfast. Lunch is 1 cup of greens, 2 tbsp salad dressing (varies and I often use half of it), 3 oz protein.

Hello!
I asked the same question about yogurt. As long as you are eating the plain on (as I understood it) it is fine. I eat the FAGE 0% Greek yogurt and add my fruit to it. I have learned to only drink water with lemon in it. I do at times drink the water that is flavored at times when I need to mix it up. Good for you on getting rid of the soda! I am waiting for replies to your question as I am interested in the answers also.
Thanks for posting!

I have a question and couldn't find a board for it. Is Greek yogurt clean? I thought I was doing really well but clean means less than 4 ingredients right? So even my salad dressing isn't clean. Crystal Light isn't clean. I've used all of mine up now, and I'm just using citrus in my water, but when I was drinking all my water with it, it wasn't clean it sounds like. And what about club soda? I replaced Pepsi with club soda with lemon or lime. I thought it was a great way to get water in, but I'm wondering if it's such a benefit?
