I kinda got side tracked by the snacks. :p It took me way back. I used to eat Drake's Devil Dogs every night before bed. EEEEEeeeek! Sometimes, I think they put crack in that stuff. LOL!

And yeah, lucky you to be able to live around all of that nature. I think we'll make that move in the next 10 years. I sure hope so!

Blackandi, was that pun deliberate or accidental??

There're a lot of horses around here and I'd love to have one but my goat barn isn't tall enough or big enough for a horse...someday, ...maybe. When dh and I go for walks we always stop where there are horses on the other side of a fence and spoil them with handfuls of grass which they, like most grass eaters (and humans), believe that the grass on the other side of the fence tastes better. They sure are the prettiest of animals. Had them when I was a kid--very lucky me.

Hospitals are terrific for traumatic care; for acute care. They do a really, really good job in saving lives when it’s a sudden bleeding emergency. But in terms of chronic care, they’re terrible; (that is) in terms of the illnesses that most people have, endure, that cost the most money, that last the longest and ultimately die from. -Dr. Andrew Saul

lol @ ELECTRALYTE I'd love to own a horse, but some say that horses can be unruly sometimes and can be nightmares. I don't know. I think it would be nice anyway. And I love Drake's cakes because they beat Little Debbie ha!...I still love them, but I don't eat them anymore.

I just had to comment on the Amish remarks. I've lived around the Amish here in PA my whole life. If you look in their grocery carts you will find white flour, Little Debbie snack cakes, tons of Mountain Dew and lots of processed food. They're not as clean living/eating as you think.

LOL! I stress out over killing mice. DH has to remove the bodies. I hope I can get a dog-proof garden planted in the spring. I'd love to raise my own eggs too, but I'll start small.

Does anyone raise rabbits? They make good dog food, but, I'd have to find someone to butcher them and probably would negate any cost savings. Even the dogs eat clean!

Remember, nobody can go back to the very beginning and make a brand new start, but anyone can start here and make a brand new end.

There's a difference between interest and commitment. When you're interested in doing something, you do it only when it's convenient. When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results."

My husband told me he raised a chicken from a chick when he was a little boy about 6 years old. He said this chicken had a name and followed him every where he went. One day he came home from school and he asked his granny where was the chicken and she said in the pot on the stove. LOL! He said he was devastated. Said he didn't eat for a week he was so depressed.

Now today, he has no problem with killing for food. He's a monster. I guess that comes from his repressed memories from living on a farm. LOL!

I'm not crazy, but I have issues with eating a cooked chicken that was just murdered an hour ago. I'll eat it, but I can't touch it or cook it...hubby has to do it.

lol. My mom grew up on a farm. Her grandma would kill the chickens herself and mom would have to help "dunk and pluck" lol. They also had a CAT problem, so needless to say, my mom was never big on having pets as we were growing up.

We are building a chicken tractor--that a chicken coop that is easy to move around so the chickens are in a safe enclosure but still get to graze on the ground in fresh spots all the time. We just have too many predators to let chickens wander around the property; mostly coyotes and possum and some skunk.

Hey, there are lots of out-of -the-way places with a bit of acreage that can connect with the internet. You might not have cable or cell towers but there is always satellite (spotty reception at times but still very useful)

I would have a hard time killing my animals too but I might just try to work myself into it with a chicken. Just don't name them people tell me. OMG, this is going to be hard.

me too! I just need to get dh to help build a chicken coop and will put in some raised garden beds and fence it off from the wildlife.

We live near Amish and I have thought about seeing if I could join :-) It is a wish of mine as well. We may not realistically be able to do it, but we do vote...THREE square times a day...Do what you can control is my motto.

I feel the same way. I wish my body would be able to handle it! LOL It is expensive eating organic and buying the 100% grass feed beef and such. Besides, how peaceful and beautiful it would be! I don't think I could kill my cow, pig, chicken though after taking care of it and loving it along the way. On second thought I would stink at being a farmer/rancher! lol

My husband said that if he were physically able to keep us a farm he'd do it. He'd move us all away from the city and have us totally depend on ourselves for food and everything else we need to live. He was saying how the Amish do it. I don't know if I can live w/o internet though. :p I think that's going too far, but I understand what he means. He knows about farming being from Dominican Republican, growing up helping his family run it and knows it takes hard work to run something like that.

Anyway, it was just a thought.
