Laura,
I agree. What do you melt coconut oil for?

No. It's certainly not. Takes up a lot of room also. My little toaster oven takes up[ a 1/4 of the space and probably a way better way to reheat foods and melt coconut oil.

You are welcome. I knew it was old research but it may resonate with someone anyway. I don't think it's a great kitchen tool for heating food!

This is from essential oils desk reference, 3rd edition:

a research project with 20 volunteers was conducted in 1980 with mic cooking. 10 vol. in group a and 10 in b fasted on liquids for 10 days. then both were fed same food for 10 days with one exception: group a was steamed, group b mic. after 10 days stool samples were analyzed. Group a was normal and group b were a plastic texture. Ultrasound scans showed adhesive food particles stuck to the stomach wall. In the stool sample, altered enzymes were found as well as protein with altered molecular structure which could not be absorbed. page 264

I kid you not!

I agree with Annie. I also believe if something makes your life vastly simpler...take a second look at it. Often that comes at a price. I dont use a microwave.
The reason that they warn not to microwave baby milk is because it can get overheated and cause scalding even while the outer bottle feels cool.

Warming plates seems like a good use for the microwave. Making playdough and disinfecting cleaning rags. lol I'm sure no living organisms could live through a good NUKING.

Oh, I completely agree with you, but it would be very simple to do a decent study on microwaved water and plants. It's going on my todo list as soon as I work out some details. I was planning to do some windowsill herbs this summer, so now that windowsill will be devoted to my experiment. In the meantime, I'm going to resurrect the tea kettle.

I wasn't comfortable using the microwave while my grandson spent a week with us. He wasn't allowed in the kitchen if the microwave was in use. I was concerned about leakage and it didn't cross my mind that the food might be dangerous. Sadly we ate out a lot because we made it a week of vacation with trips to the zoo, etc.

In 2012, Lucent/Alcatel will be releasing a low cost box the size of a Rubick's cube that can be easily placed all over cities and towns everywhere to boost cell phone coverage. Our exposure is going to increase dramatically. Will they come out with a clothing line to protect us next?

Remember, nobody can go back to the very beginning and make a brand new start, but anyone can start here and make a brand new end.

There's a difference between interest and commitment. When you're interested in doing something, you do it only when it's convenient. When you're committed to something, you accept no excuses; only results."

So many things that people were reporting as unsafe and other people that were either questioning the validity of those reports and even ridiculing them were later convinced of the truth when the unsafe nature of the thing was proven. There are many things like that right now that are in the midst of this process. Like vaccines, cell phones, even home wireless receivers are thought to give off dangerous radio frequencies. Only a year ago people were ridiculing the cell phone danger and now some of the tumors are showing up especially in teens--right there on the right side of right-handed teens and on the left side of the left-handed teens. Turns out texting is a very good way to use a cell phone! Now they need to make "safe cases" so our kids aren't being exposed by carrying those things around in their pockets...near their reproductive parts. This isn't a joke.

We used to think margarine and Crisco were safe. We used to think plastic bottles were safe until the complainers got paid attention to. Now BPA is being banned in many places. We used to think food coloring was safe. We used to think sugar was safe. We used to think x-rays were safe. We use to think fluoride was safe and a few people still do; but that's going to change real soon. Sometimes it takes the "science" (mainstream science, that is) a while to catch up with the people who are watching closely and asking good questions.

I heat plates in my microwave; just the plate so the hot food will stay hot when it's served up. I always reheat things on the stove top or in the toaster oven.
-annie

Hospitals are terrific for traumatic care; for acute care. They do a really, really good job in saving lives when it’s a sudden bleeding emergency. But in terms of chronic care, they’re terrible; (that is) in terms of the illnesses that most people have, endure, that cost the most money, that last the longest and ultimately die from. -Dr. Andrew Saul

No. But I doubt you will find "scientific studies" that find that microwaving is bad for us... After all, microwaves are sold and are recognized as safe. But the microwaved water that kills a plant is good enough for me to not feed nuked food to my child.

MANY things are sold that are recognized as safe. Artifical sweeteners, soy products all kinds of stuff... doesn't mean it is safe.

I use my microwave a lot! All of my tea is made from microwaved water, but the experiments on youtube were pretty darn unscientific so those don't convince me that microwaved water is any more dangerous than water boiled in a kettle.

I am concerned about other foods like veggies. I can't digest most raw veggies, so I do tend to microwave them in glass bowls. Also we use the microwave to reheat leftovers.

Any cooking changes the composition of foods and we all know how grilling adds carcinogens. Is infrared cooking dangerous too? I have an infrared toaster oven that would replace the microwave. I wonder if there is any research going on now.

I think most pediatricians these days are warning mothers not to use a microwave to heat formula or breast milk.

I have a tea kettle and getting rid of the microwave would give me more much needed counterspace. Wonder if the husband will think I've lost my mind. I forwarded him the article.

Remember, nobody can go back to the very beginning and make a brand new start, but anyone can start here and make a brand new end.

I don't really eat processed frozen foods so no nuking there, I think I heard somewhere that it rearranges the cells and changes the make-up of the food, similar to what the article the OP gave us.

Plus it doesn't really seem to fit in with the clean heathy lifestyle I want to lead.

LOL I'm glad I'm not the only one who nukes dish rags. My hubby thinks I'm nuts. I think I'm smarter now that I don't use as many disinfectants in the kitchen.

What motivated you to have fewer microwaved foods, Evelyn?

I don't really use the microwave anymore. Sometimes to de-gross a sponge. I don''t use it for food anymore, Would rather have it cold or reheated on stovetop or oven. That's just me, it's been a while, maybe a year now?

A friend just sent me this link which suggest that there is research that proves that microwaved foods may lead to cancer, brain damage and other health problems. What are your thoughts?
