This makes me cry every time I read or see anything on the oil spill. There will be impacts to the environment for the rest of my life, I'm sure.
If anyone wants to do something to help, but don't know what to do, show your support by buying Dawn dish detergent. It's what they use to clean the birds. I don't know how clean it is, but it's got to be okay if they use it on birds which are generally sensitive to chemicals.
If you feel the need to donate cash, please send money directly to TriState Bird Rescue, which is located in Delaware. It's my understanding that any organizations asking for money for wildlife donations are not legit.
On a side note, although BP is paying for their services, room and board, I understand they are feeding the wildlife rescue workers crap - chips, cookies, white bread sandwiches and stuff like that. It's not like the workers can even really go anywhere to eat, as they are in a remote area in a fishing camp. I sent an e-mail to BP asking them to take better care of the wildlife workers, but my guess is no one will read it until sometime in 2011.
My BF sent a care package to his sister who is one of the TriState vets working the site. She expects to be there for about 6-8 weeks and hasn't had a decent meal. Knowing her, she is easily working 18-20 hours a day. She's one of the most dedicated people I know.
