My Dh says canola used to be called rapeseed oil,
but the name was unpopular (go figure) and so they
changed it to canola. He says it is hydrogenated
like other synthetic oils.

I don't trust canola oil in any form. I think it's just a cleverly marketed product that can be produced cheaply. It's really rapeseed oil but the marketers felt we would be put off by that name so they changed it. The "can" part stands for Canada where (I think) it was first developed. It was originally used for industrial purposes.

I use sunflower and safflower oils too. But they absolutely must be organic otherwise they WILL be GMO! I think they are very nice neutral flavored oils for all-purpose use. Grapeseed oil is one of my favorites because of its very high smoke point and neutral flavor. I sometimes use it to crisp up a tortilla or to make mayonnaise. It makes a greenish colored mayonnaise.

Hospitals are terrific for traumatic care; for acute care. They do a really, really good job in saving lives when it’s a sudden bleeding emergency. I am not sure about brands and such, but oils have different cooking purposes because of how they handle heat.

So it doesn't matter where it comes from or if its in glass of platic? I usually buy any Cold press olive oil that is on sale and use for salads? For sauteeing i use coconuil oil, light olive oil or parsly butter

I noticed last week some Goya olive oil in a glass bottle and that got me to thinking. I also heard that safflower oil is supposed to be good for you???

One thing with Walnut oil is that it is expensive. From watching all the cooking shows I do (Top Chef, Good Eats, Iron Chef, Gordon Ramsey) it is used sparingly because it has a strong flavor.

Another expensive one is Truffle Oil.

Right now I've got the Omega Canola oil, Extra Light Virgin, Classic Virgin (more for salad dressings), Grapeseed oil, and Sesame Oil. I generally try to buy glass so I can recycle the bottles.

When I want a strong olive oil flavor like for dipping bread or drizzling over an Italian sauce (never cook with olive oil 'cuz of it's low smoke point) or even in a simple salad I often use Napa Valley "Rich & Robust" EVOO. When I don't want the olive oil flavor to overpower other flavors like in a more complex salad or salad dressing or any other dish that holds its own in the flavor department but I still want olive oil, I often use Spectrum's Mediterranean EVOO because it's milder.

Walnut oil is very warm flavored and tasty for many uses. The unrefined variety (smoke point 400) is the only type worth using though the refined kind has a slightly higher smoke point. Walnut oil isn't cheap any way you use it but it's worth it.

I use all the nut and see oils and always stick to organic, cold pressed or expeller extracted (not chemical extracted - ruins the taste)

Ever tried macadamia nut oil? Yummy! Very high smoke point.

My coconut oil actually doesn't have much of a smell at all. When I bought it I thought it would taste/smell more like coconut and be great for baking with...
Walnut oil? Not sure. I was thinking good on salads...

We bought Spectrum brand coconut oil once (when we were in FL to get married), and it was nothing like the coconut oil we normally get from Wilderness Family Naturals online. The WFN smells like sweet coconut, and I remember thinking the Spectrum smelled more like motor oil! I wonder if maybe there was just something wrong with the jar we bought?!?! Laura - does the Spectrum you buy smell like coconut? Just wonderin'...

Besides the good benefits of the glass, I like the pretty shapes of the bottles. If it is a unique
one I save it and put it in the window.

We usually buy Bertolli......

I have used some in a dark green bottle. The story
I have heard is the dark glass shields the olive oil from light rays which destroy the oils' healthy
benefits.
