Let's see; one sad response, one laughing out loud response.

What, again, were we talking about?

Oh yah, sweets. I had a big piece of pumpkin pie. I didn't get any gingerbread people because the kids ate them all.
emoticon
So I finished off some hot buttered rum instead!
Bossy ate all the pieces of gingerbread and pumpkin pie that fell from my brother's hands. (My brother's an invalid in a wheelchair with only one half-functioning hand) Bossy knows just where to hang out when my brother is here LOL!!

Merry Christmas!!

Dad used to get honey comb, and we would scrape the honey off of the comb. He took a beekeeping course too. But then the city's bylaws changed and we weren't allowed to keep bees. I would like to try that. I think bees would be fairly low maintenance. Not like a cow, pigs or chickens. Bees kinda take care of themselves... emoticon

I like sweet too. Can't seem to wean myself away from certain sweet things. I'm like you Laura, I try to keep my sweet treats few and far between but sometimes it's hard; especially at this time of the year. I've got company coming with kids and...well, we're going to decorate gingerbread people and I just made the dough the old standard way with conventional brown sugar and molasses. That way I can know that it will turn out good--no surprises!! I am also making pumpkin pies for another evening with guests this week. They will have plenty of sugar though I use whole wheat pastry flour for the crusts. I didn't like the taste of the pumpkin custard I made last time with Steviva Blend. So, for company I will just do the old standard...sigh...I'll be glad when the holidays are over and I get back to eating more healthier. Raw honey is my favorite sweet taste. I'm talking about the truly raw honey that is thick and stiff and creamy and comes with bits of bees and wax on the top that you have to scrape aside to get to the good stuff...Oh, it's heavenly!
Good nite all

Very true about the honey, ANI. Good point. You can also get stevia plant. I think the type of processing has also something to do with it, and how often you eat the stuff.
I try to use my steviva whenever possible. But sometimes, like when i make icecream, you CANNOT get a nice creamy icecream with out sugar. I've tried and tried, believe me. BUT, you CAN use LESS processed sugars. Raw sugar and dark brown sugars work every bit as well. But, I also TRY to reserve these treats to an OCCASIONAl treat. (i try and I try) and I MUST say, that since i cut out the splenda and processed white sugar and cheap chocolate out of my diet, I can't believe how those sweet cravings have diminished. I still like my sweet, but it doesn't have to be CANDY, SUGARY, SICKLY sweet either.

Also, maple syrup. This process has been around for a long time... again, I am careful about how much I use. A MEASURED tablespoon at best. But, I really just like a dollop of yogurt and some sliced peaches on my buckwheat pancakes the best these days. Twoi years ago, I would have poured on 1/4 cup of Aunt Jemima's BUTTER FLAVORED GOO all over my pancakes. emoticon and now, just the thought of it is SOOOO unappealing.

Sugars are a lot of empty calories, and even the less processed ones have LITTLE nutrition in them. But a LITTLE goes a long way... I guess that's all I'm trying to say.

I just read an interesting article about sweeteners a little biased from a vegan's point of view but very informative. One thing that stood out to me was when the writer pointed out that some things can be gotten just by going out and picking them and other things simply can't because they don't exist in nature. For example: you can't go out into a corn field, squeeze a corn cob and get corn syrup. You can't squeeze a handful of rice and get rice syrup either. It's the same for agave syrup and maple syrup and even, sad to say, stevia (unless you have access to its leaves). But you can go right to a bee hive and get honey. You can even squeeze cane juice from the sugar cane. There is a big difference in the chemical makeup and nutrition of a refined product and a natural one.

So, I'm asking all of us, me included; what truly is "clean eating"? Clean for the world? Clean for our bodies? How big IS our sweet tooth anyway?? Probably bigger than what is good for anything!!

Cheers,
Crazy Duck

Whoops, I read two different articles, not one, and I sorta got the two of them combined in my head. No harm done. Some of my above comments were influenced by the the vegan and some from Mike Adams who also has some great things to say about agave, fructose and other popular, so called, healthy alternatives to sugar. I learned a lot today. Quack!

So, Andi - you don't think agave tastes sweet? interesting...

I didn't used to like honey, but I do now. I do try to limit sugar, honey, agave, maple syrup, etc., though, because they are all too high in sugar and calories. I wish I could find that Steviva that Laura and Ani rave about, but they don't carry it locally. I guess I'll have to order some online.

I still have trouble in dealing with coworkers. One of them defines a good meal as sheerly lots of food. I'd rather have a little great food then endless mediocre food.

I really do like Honey. We have some local producers which I am hunting down. I also have an Aunt and Uncle that make their own maple syrup. They are in Maine so not local at all for me. But HOMEMADE. Yum.

I think brown rice syrup is just another highly refined sweetener. I've heard that it is lower on the glycemic scale but I'm not sure of that. I know that rice is one of the grains highest in sugar (can cause blood sugar spikes and raises insulin)

For me, I would choose any natural sweetener over rice syrup--like honey, raw cane crystals (Rapadura), molasses (not really all that "natural"), sorghum or maple syrup. I've even heard that agave is highly refined but honestly I don't know how it's processed. I've read some arguments about the "naturalness" of it and its environmental impact.

So much to think about--makes me crazy sometimes. You guys know I'm crazy don't you!!??

Honey is sugar; can't argue with that and sugar must be limited for the sake of good health and weight loss. However, if you are going to use sweetening then honey (raw [never heated], unfiltered, local, if possible) has several nutritional advantages. It is a real food. But it is sugar so don't kid yourself thinking you can eat a lot of it. The junky gold-colored clear stuff that you see in the grocery store is a refined, nutrition-deficient sweetener. Don't bother! If you're going to treat yourself with a sweet thing you might as well go high class!!

We buy our honey here locally from a guy who
processes it naturally and so it is healthier.
Like any sugar, it has to be limited. I love
it on oatmeal, or toast, but a quart jar lasts
me a long time.

Yes, it's sugar and needs to be limited. Honey can have many health benefits. Buying local honey is always best, especially if you have allergies.

Before the anti-sugar bandits get here (wink) I'd like to say that Tosca talks in depth about Sugar between pages 216 and 221 of the Bible, I mean the Eat-Clean Diet Recharged book. This is what she says about "natural" sweetners.

"When it comes to any sweetner, the key is moderation. Even 'natural' sweetners such as those made from honey, maple sytrup, rice and the agave plant need to be consumed in limited amounts. Too much of a good thing is still too much."

She went on to say, in a nutshell, that natural sweetners such as honey are not bad. She does say that white sugar is the devil though and to stay away from that altogether.

She says if you need to sweeten something then go with some healthier options like sucanat, agave nectar, rapadura, fruit sugar, unsweetened applesauce and brown rice syrup. I've never had any of those except for unsweetened applesauce (which is not sweet at all), agave nectar (which is not sweet either to me) and fruit sugar.

I know sugar is bad but since sugar is bad, many simply say honey is good. I read the side of my honey container, and though it is less processed than sugar, it still seems to be a bunch of empty calories. Can someone explain to me why honey is good?
