Definitely! If we have our own well, that would be cool. Healthier too., No flouride or bleach in it. Also, definitely have wood heat, but I have also been reading about homes that use the heat from below ground to heat the house. I also want to get some wind turbines and solar panels...
When talking to my dad about houses he always told me to make sure there were three sources of heat. These are usually gas, electric, and wood. It is really funny because he grew up in Wyoming and Colorado (both freezing states) and then moved to Florida. When he designed his house in FL it had gas, electric and a functional wood burning fire place. They have a wood pile that the home owners association goes crazy over every few months. :).

My hubby and I are looking to buy our own piece of property. We want at least 5 acres. We want to be self sufficient. He is a house builder, so I want us to build something OFF-THE-GRID. Or at least be able to survive in the event of a catastrophe. I think we would start slowly though, but if we build ourselves, there is GREAT opportunity to build-in the things that would enable us to live that way, while still being able to live comfortably. I am not so interested anymore in my job (as enjoyable as it is, and I AM self-employed). I would like to be able to illustrate children's books or somethiong more FUN. But, most of all, I really enjoy chopping wood, gardening and feeding chickens (we used to own a dozen chickens a few years ago) I think if everyone made a bigger effort to live GREENER we would all be in a better place!
OH! I have been buying up all kinbds of great reference books on living OFF-GRID. Gardening, land use, green homes, bee-keeping, keeping animals, water and sewage management... interesting stuff!
