Yeah. Reducing fat seems to help me also. A bt of fat slows digestion and also keeps the calories in check.

Also, there are a few cold cereals I like sometimes. Nature's Path has a few good ones that I like. The ingredients look pretty good.

I used to really enjoy Raisen Bran, Mini Wheats and a cereal that Kellogs quit making a long time ago called "Buckwheat and Malple". lol

Hello,
I drink 1% milk and almond milk. I love the taste of almond milk. I don't cut fat out totally just reduce it.

As far as eating as much as you want, it's always calories in verses calories burned for weight loss. Clean eating will help you feel energized and all around healthy.

There are so many ideas and even a step by step plan at thegraciouspantry.com. I am working on converting my cupboards but cereal is going to be hard to get rid of and some packaged food. Baby steps. I like learning from you all too!

Nope. Some believe that seperating the milk from the fat is NOT how nature intended. Same with seperating egg whites from egg yolks. I personally can't stand the taste of store bought, homogonized, pasteurized milk, (after having raw milk) so I drink almond milk now.
I think that whether you take the fat in or leave it out is up to you, but remember when they take the fat out of milk it also increases the "sugar" content (naturally occuring sugar).

Personally, when it comes to things like yogurt, I like to get the 2% Greek yogurt. That way there is a some of the fat in there. If I could keep my weight more manageable I would go for the full fat stuff. The fat free tastes like crap, and also having some fat slows digestion, which means the glycemic impact of the food is also reduced.

Hope this helps.

I am hoping to be able to buy the book this weekend. I will need recipes, for sure. But, until I get the book, I'm going to take baby steps and start getting rid of all of the processed food in the house and making sure I replace it with lots of fresh fruit, veggies and lean meat. From what I've read online whole milk is a no no, but I don't think I will change from it. Does everyone on here drink only non-fat milk?

Baby carrots and strawberries are clean yes. But so are a lot of calorie dense foods. And definitely not eat all you want. At least not me. Some people can eat all they want and never gain any weight. (like my husband) and some of us have to really watch portions, etc.
For me though, eating clean isn't mainly about weight loss. It's more about general health and hopefully longevity.

Laura, I saw your reply from the end of June that your problem is not eating processed food but eating too much clean food. I'm totally new to this, so this may sound dumb. But, I thought if one was eating so healthy, that you would pretty much be able to eat all you want. Just wondering what everyone else thinks; can someone really gain weight from eating too many strawberries or baby carrots? Like I said, I'm new, so please don't yell at me too bad! emoticon

Clean eating is very new to me but I do believe it's the way we should all eat. I started my day with a green smoothie. I was going to do a 3 day cleanse but I won't have the willpower to stick to it. I can tell already so I decided to stick to counting calories and eating what I know is good. The banana, blueberry and kale, parsley smoothie was a good way to get going today and I just had a healthy protein rich lunch. I am looking forward to learning more about clean eating.

I don't really get cravings for processed foods. In fact processed foods make me want to gag. My step son enjoys food like Ichiban Noodles and Tacitos. emoticon YUK! The smell is absolutely PUTRID! I never got to eat anything except real food my entire life.
Real food to me just tastes better.

That doesn't mean to say I don't enjoy goodies. But my idea of "goodies' are most likely much different than someone else's idea of goodies.

I occasionally enjoy some DARK chocolate, or a slice of homemade strawberry rhubarb crisp (made without added sugar; just stevia for sweetness). Some really good cheese is also a real treat!

I have eaten clean previously but for one reason or another let the principals of the lifestyle allude me. So I am back and I want to know how do others handle those first cravings when you give up the processed everything? I am trying to cook some baked goodies I have a few recipes because I subscribe to Oxygen and I have Tosca's first clean eating recipe book. Is that how everyone else survives...arming yourself with you own baked arsenal of goodies?

I like that Motto too! It is a good one. I have changed the way I eat much since attempting to eat clean , but I am not 100% where I want to be. I find making little changes works for me in the long run. Today I baked my pork chop instead of frying it. It seems like everything I love to eat or how to cook it is not the best so I might have more changes to make than some of you.

Hi Everyone, I am so happy to be part of the eating clean team! I have learned so much about clean eating and my confidence in myself has soared, and my body had really diminished. The cleaner I eat the thinner I get. If I had know then what I know now I probably would have been thin my whole life insted of an unhappy chubby person. I feel blessed to have found the right blend of life skills to turn my life around.Thank you all for being part of this wonderful team and the support you give to one another.

One motto that I now live by is that if it comes from a plant eat it, and if it is made in a plant don't.

With Love and Hope for a bright Future.

I'm ready to move forward again. The cravings have gone away, praise the Lord!, and I made pretty good choices today. I decided to start fresh today, which is growth for me because when I need to get back on the wagon I've always been a "start fresh on Monday" type of girl. My breaky wasn't great today but I had a cup of cherries for a snack, a tomato and 3 oz chicken for lunch and I'm having a chicken sandwich out for dinner tonight. What got me today was my moms chocolate chip cookies. She finally got the chip to dough ratio right after almost 40 years lol. But I didn't have any soda today! I had been having 1 or 2 every day all week.

I have plenty of chicken at home in the freezer, quinoa, fresh lettuce and tomatoes and I'm raiding the herb garden before I go home. Thai basil, cilantro, parsley.

Fell off the wagon this week. The 15 day detox I did came to an end on Saturday and the biggest side effect I had was insomnia. A friend warned me to beware of intense cravings for carbs and sugar, but I thought she meant DURING, not AFTER! YIKES, this has been bad for unclean food. On top of being sick and the cravings, my period is late and I'm craving the salty/sweet that comes with that. I've had Pepsi every day this week, missed 2 days of getting 8 waters in and had ice cream every day. Like I said, it's been an unclean week.

I need to do a bit of shopping so I have healthier food to eat. I have plenty for meals, but snacks I'm low on. I'm making a short list to get me through to the weekend and I took out chicken for dinner. I can pick up some greens and have chicken and a salad for dinner and redeem myself today at least.

I have been a sparkpeople member for a long time but not on a regular basis and i have never posted anything. I hope this is in the right place. I am starting to eat clean and I am looking for people that live in my area (Grand Rapids Michigan). Is there anyone out there from here?

Any of your dark greens: chard, spinach, collard, turnip, kale, 'mustard' are all considered 'superfoods'. I use them to enhance homemade soups, stews, chili's, chowders, just rough chop and stir them in five minutes before serving.

Kale is often associated with spinach so I would assume it tastes similar (great on salads!). I've only tasted it in kale chip form so the salt and olive oil kinda overpowered the natural flavor =P.

Kale chips are so easy and fun!
mk so you just need a bunch of kale (washed and thouroughly dried)
some olive oil and salt to taste.
you rip the kale leaves into little pieces and brush them with olive oil (i just use olive oil spray and spritz them all when they are on the oven sheet.) and then you salt them.
Put in your oven (preheated to 350 degrees) and they only take about 10 minutes or so to cook. Just long enough for the edges to get crispy!
Enjoy!

Melinda-I too follow a Pescatarian diet. You might be interested to know Tosca Reno recently
put out a"Clean Eating cookbook" for vegetarians...
Does anyone know how to preserve fresh ginger? Can it be frozen? I got a really good deal
from local vegie stand-huge piece for99cents-she said she knew it would cost a lot more in
the grocery, but because it was so healthy, she wanted to share with her customers!

Being that I choose a pescetarian diet, (I eat seafood, but no land animals), I can never be completely clean. I limit the amount of TVP (textured vegetable protein - looks like ground beef) to once per week since that is highly processed. Most of my protein comes from natural peanut butter, and canned beans (no salt/no sugar).

IMHO, I think that as long as most of your food comes to your plate the way it is found in nature, then you'll be just fine.

It is very hard. I think with all the advertising for this and that. I've scaled back to simplify what I eat and cut back.. but spreading out my meals through out the day . When I see stuff on tv commercials or listen to radio and what they are trying to get us to eat.. it makes me sick. All those packaged processed foods.. are bodies aren't made to eat all those chemicals and high sugar items.. So really working on reading those labels.. and keeping it simple.. You can do it.. just one day at a time.. and NO none of us are perfect, its ok to do a splurge.. Everything in moderation. But for me right now really trying to be aware of what goes in my mouth.. I must say I did blow it this weekend.. sigh... but what can you do we are human..emoticon

Just do it , keep it in your mind this isn't going to be perfection but a goal to live a clean heatlhy life. As long as you can hit the mark most days you will be successfulI in the long run.

It's hard isn't it Firebug? I'm learning that I wasn't eating as clean as I thought. I feel overwhelmed and quite frankly, guilty. Yes, I want to eat clean. But will I ever be perfect?

hi Hate to say it.. but i've been bad.. I "thought" I could go it alone. But i'm realizing I need to put more effort and come out into the sparks community and read and share. So I've been going through all my spark teams.. I had joined and picked a few that i can focus on.

So I'm back and very motivated. I will be stopping in as much as possible , Clean healthy eating is important to me and for my family.

Have a great day everyone Diane

Sometimes good things come from bad choices. I blogged today so for full story check it out, but the short version is that after 3 days of NOT eating clean, I feel a difference. I didn't notice a difference when I started switching to clean food, but 3 days of processed food, fast food, white bread and wayy too many carbs and starches has my tummy all yucky. My energy levels are all over the place, I'm hungry ALL the time, no matter what I eat, and my guts are gurgling. I did what I could to salvage the day though. I took out chicken for dinner and I'll probably just pick up some greens to have with it. I'm sure 24 hours of clean eating again will do wonders in fixing everything and I'll be feeling better.

But like I said, good things come from bad choices. When I start to feel like it isn't making a difference, I can remember that while I may not feel the good I'm doing to my body, I can sure feel the bad.

Croutons are simple. Just take your favourite bread. Cube it up and spread on a cookie sheet. Sprinkle with spices and drizzle with olive oil if desired. Put in oven until dried out and slightly browned.

Trying to come up with better ideas for dinner tonight, but I can't come up with much to use my chicken breast for in a hurry. I have a bunch of tender ruby red greens so I'll have that with roasted chicken breast and balsamic vinegar/olive oil. My daughter will have caesar dressing with it. I should learn to make my own croutons but as I don't have any in the house even in the package, it'll be a crouton-less salad for her tonight.

Still having my go-to fruit/greek yogurt for breakfast in the mornings and made my daughter penne for lunch today instead of something processed like deli meat.

Welcome to the team and to clean eating. Great advice Fit Artist. One of the things I started doing was reading the labels on everything... don't take it for granted that corn sweetener isn't stuck in somewhere.

If you do decided to go gluten-free then I would purchase almond flour and coconut flour. I have gone gluten free and it is so different now when I cook and bake. I have given up breads and grains and decided to use the nuts and seeds for baking. There are many websites out there for whole food diets... if you give up gluten/grains then you may wish to check into Paleo or Primal way of eating. You can Google either of these and find the websites. Mark's Daily Apple is a site that was highly recommended when I first started about a month ago.

I lost another 2 pounds last week. Since I have started this way of eating I have lost a total of 10 pounds in 5 weeks. The first week I was still eating products with sugar and flour... once I gave that up I noticed a big difference.

One last thought... get to know your local farmers at the Farmer's Markets. Ask if they use real seeds (not genetically modified or hybrid) and are completely organic. Sometimes you can get better deals if you visit and deal with the farmer directly. Also Google for CSA (community supported agriculture) businesses in your area. The farmer will deliver fresh and organic food to your area which is fresh and whole food.

Good luck with developing a healthy lifestyle. Remember that this is a process so don't make yourself crazy as you are starting out. Learn as you go, my friend, and enjoy the process of eating whole and healthy foods. Julia

Just travel around the outside perimeter of the grocery store as much as possible.

Get lean protein, eggs, dairy, fresh produce. Add in some nuts and seeds, and whole grains (if you do grain). I get gluten free grain like buckwheat and quinoa.
Get some olive oil for salads and coconut oil for frying.

Good morning! I just joined the team. I started modifying my diet about 5 years ago, but never really knew what it was called until I ran into one of Tosca's books. Now I'm just getting more skilled. I'm going through her new book for Vegetarians now - it is SO awesome! Last night we had Caprice Quinoa Salad... it had Quinoa, mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil with a vinegar, oil, and shallot dressing. So wonderful! even my two kids (4 and 7) liked it!

We choose a pescetarian diet in our house, we do eat dairy, just no cow milk. We use Almond milk instead.

I can't wait to learn some wonderful recipes from you all.

Melinda

Made breaded chicken parmesan last night. I've actually never had it before and I took out too little chicken for it. My poor daughter and I only had 2 oz each :( Definitely going to be making 2 breasts next time and we can always use the extra for lunch the next day.

Going to ABC Restaurant for dinner tonight and having my absolute fave...New Orleans Chicken Stacker. Foccacia, chicken breast, hot sauce/mayo, lettuce, tomato, very thinly sliced red onion. No fries tonight, just the sandwich. YUM.

Sounds awesome! Pizza can be healthy too. Just watch the toppings.

Thoroughly enjoyed a clean breakfast this morning. 100g of vanilla Greek yogurt, and 1/2 c of raspberries. I have 3oz salmon with lemon and dill for lunch. I'll be having pizza for dinner tonight though...playoff game and end of the week. Always have dinner out on Friday night.
