they may be simple to you...but not everyone...hence the reason behind posting the principles not everyone will know or understand
implying "Simplicity" is rather insulting to me when one is just trying to get an understanding about "moderation" and if that is a concept that is embraced by clean eating...I know it is embraced by SparkPeople
re-read your post and you will be able to view your OBVIOUS tone
thanks anyway

Well, those are Tosca's words taken from HER book... so I don't know what you want me to tell you... You should eat SOME healthy fat everyday. But you don't want to eat too much. Does that make sense?
I'm trying to help but I not sure exactly what it is you are unclear on?
The principles of CLEAN EATING are simple, not complicated.

Hi HAWGWILD
I have copied and pasted your original post done on 04/18/09
These are the MAIN principles taken from Tosca's book
Eat 5-6 small meals, everyday Eat every 2-3 hours Combine lean protein & complex carbs at every meal Drink at least 8 cups of water, everyday Never miss a meal, especially breakfast Avoid all over-processed foods, especially white flour and white sugar Avoid saturated and trans fats Avoid sugar-loaded colas and juices Consume adequate healthy fats (EFAs) everyday Avoid alcohol Avoid calorie dense foods that contain little nutritional value Depend on fresh fruits and vegetables for fiber, vitamins and enzymes Stick to proper portion sizing
As you can see - AVOID - I was just wanted to clarify - thanks for you help

I don't think I said to avoid anything. Just limit your intake of fats. Even healthy fats.

when you say avoid do you mean limit...I am just trying to figure out how this Clean Eating works...are you setting restrictions on foods or are you indulging on rare occasions or not at all?

you should eat small amounts of any fat. I try to only eat HEALTHY fats... ie. avocado, olive oil, nuts, seeds ...

Hi, I am new and I know I need to take my nutrition to the next level...I read all the General Principles and I have a few questions before I get started with CE...how do you avoid saturated fat...there are some many "good for you" foods that contain them?
i.e. Avocado

It helps a bunch! I'm eating a lot more seafood now than I ever have before. The wild variety. Boy oh boy giving up my licorice...ohhhh I can feel the pain. I love that stuff. We'll see... I'm getting some agave nectar this weekend. I have stevia and I agree w/you that it's a bit "weird" tasting. Gingerale is no problem to lose. I just started drinking it while going through chemo to settle my stomach. I've got a bunch of sparkling mineral water too. The digestive enzymes are a biggy 'cause of my problems since my cancer operation. This I'm going to talk to my herbalist about when I see him on the 12th. I think the enzymes w/b great for me.
Appreciate all your hard work.
Kate

Hey, Kate! Not TOTALLY! LOL! Lean Protein can be beans, soy, tofu, cheese & dairy (low fat), eggs... I don't eat a lot of red meat (although i do ENJOY it). I DO eat a LOT of white chicken meat, shrimp and seafood (wild, not farmed), and have been eating more beans lately... I also really love bison. There is a bison ranch just on the outskirts of town; I keep meaning to GET THERE! LOL!
Dark brown sugar; not too bad. Raw Cane sugar; better. Could also try honey, or pure maple syrup. I really like my agave nectar. I also have stevia, but it is a little weird tasting... LOSE the white sugar ALL TOGETHER. AND, lose the gingerale! Have sparkling water mixed with fruit juice (unsweetened).
I take a COMPLETE digestive enzymes... they are in the vitamion section at the grocery store. They simply help to digest and break down all the CLEAN food. If you are a little GASSY, you may wamt to take...
Hi Hawgwild, here's a couple of questions and also things I'm currently doing. Am I totally blowing it? I know I'll have to make some dietary adjustments.
I'm to combine lean protein and complex carbs at every meal? Can I do that w/o eating meat? (I don't have the book yet.)I'm thinking about the future - if I ever give up meat.
I plan to always eat breakfast from now on. I've learned about that w/my current health issues. We have cream of wheat most mornings w/brown sugar or an egg and toast on others. I guess I have to find a substitute for the brown sugar huh? I'm back to eating whole wheat breads but am still having problems giving up the white sugar totally. I love black licorice! No problems w/cakes or cookies etc... Red wine once in a while - but no more than 3 or 4 ounces if I partake. I have a soda every great while but not more than maybe 1 a week. Gingerale is usually what I drink. I can't have any funny sugar at all.
What enzymes should we take?
I can see I'll need to get the book. Just can't do it right now. Thanks for the info.

Yep. That's right. Just keep working on it... I grew up with NEVER having had white bread in our household. I prefer grainy "rough" stuff! LOL!

Thanks for posting that. I don't have her book yet. Maybe next week or so. My biggest challenge is the over-processed foods; white flour and white sugar. I love any kind of grain, seed, or nut, but for some reason I have a hard time giving up the white bread! And the other one that goes with it is avoiding calorie dense foods that contain little nutritional value. I'm going to keep working on it. It will happen!!

Thanks for posting. This brings up a question that I have, and I'm wondering if anyone can be more specific here.
Are we suppoed to have the healthy fats at every meal?...or I should ask, how many servings of healthy fats EFAs should we have a day? I don't recall her saying specifically what it was in the book.
Right now, I've been eating 25% of my calories in fat, 30% in proteins & 45% in carbs. I've found that I feel best when I get this ratio, but I'm just interested to hear what other people have discovered with their EFAs.
