I've never worked out on an empty stomach. Maybe I'll try next time.

Yeah, I've always heard it was better to workout on an empty stomach (if you are trying to lose fat) because your body is forced to go straight to your fat cells first for fuel. But if you are trying to gain weight/muscle to always eat before working out(carbs) and then have protein post workout. I'm sure there are several theories to this...and I'm sure they all work to some extent.

Be the calm in the storm!

I usually eat a piece of fruit or something light before working out.

I have the constitution of an OX and the stomach and appetite to match
I am never uncomfortable unless I eat to exploding point or super greasy stuff.
I can always eat right after too.

this brings me to another point -- does anyone else out there feel like they are missing a stop or full button?

I am tired of having to talk myself into not eating more
I am always hungry

it is best to have a small meal or snack before exercising. usually about 100 or 150 calories and have a carb and a prot. also eat about 1 hour after exercising and be sure to drink lots of water.

I had an instructor at the gym I was attending say you should put something in your stomach before exercising. It had something to do the the fat burning process. So I always have something, usually a smoothie (8 oz) or applesauce (1/2 cup), before exercising.

I've heard it both ways....Bill Philips, of "Body For Life" swears by working out on an empty stomach while SparkPeople suggests the following:

icles.asp?id=1074&page=3

www.sparkpeople.com/resource/nutrition_art
icles.asp?id=1082

I guess it's up to the individual and what they can and cannot handle during exercise.

I have no idea about what is true about "fat burning"... but, just personally, even a little bit of food leaves me nauseated and having to leave my workout, which, for me, is the worst option. I don't have two hours to wait, which would be the amount of time I would need before I'd be able to work out effectively. Not to offend or be rude, but common sense is really the rule... I think when all is said and done, whatever healthy option a person choses to regain control over their life is the best option.

It's not a good idea to exercise in the morning on an empty stomach. It is a myth that you will burn more fat that way. Here is the ask an expert answer to your question.

I think that, like losing weight, it depends on the person. I too, wake up early to work out... there is NO WAY I could even stick a banana in my mouth at 4:15 am. I get up, have a small cup of coffee, read a few emails, login to sparkpeople emoticon, then head out by 4:30ish. That works best for me... but not my best friend, who does stick a banana in her mouth... Its just my opinion, but I'd stick with what you think works best for you... the "experts" can't account for every single person out there.

You should never work out on a FULL stomach, you should wait at least an hour (I would say) or more after a meal, maybe 1/2 hour after a snack (your mom's "wait 20 minutes before swimming" was legitimate). That being said, you should also not work out on a completely empty stomach. 2 or 3 hours after a meal is fine - I don't mean that kind of empty. But when you first wake up in the morning you should have a little something before you work out. Your body needs to wake up. I don't mean having a few slices of french toast, some bacon, OJ, and coffee! But, as previously said, a yogurt, or a banana, some berries - just about 50-100 calories to get some sugar circulating in your blood, then wait about 15 minutes. Any workout you're doing is going to go beyond 100 calories so your body will have to dip in to its reserves.

I normally eat something at least 30 minutes before I workout. Alot of times it is a banana and yogurt. This works for me. I am not sure about anyone else.

I haven't read any studies, but I know for me I can't work out on a full or completely empty stomach. In the morning I will often have a small granola bar before a very long run, just so I don't get too hungry and hit a wall. But waiting 2 or 3 hours before working out in the afternoon sounds like a good idea, so that your body really has time to digest.

I agree and disagree. After sleeping your body needs something to get things moving and sustain you so you don't have your blood sugar drop excessively, etc. I too exercise early in the a.m. 4 a.m. to be exact and I find, for me, I must eat something. Usually a banana or 7 almonds. Something before I hit the treadmill. Then I have breakfast after. I might suggest some research but I think I recently saw an article that suggests eating something is better for you than not. Congrats on losing but you want to stay healthy as well.

Hey team here is another really great question....Lately I have been working out in the morning before I eat breakfast & then again in the afternoon or evening before I eat or 2-3 hours after I eat. What is your opinion or preference...is it better to work out on an empty stomach or does it really matter ?? But I will tell you this... that as soon as I started doing that I begin to shed pounds as strange as it may sound. I read in an article that when the stomach is empty that it will be forced to burn stored fat instead of carbs it said something along the lines that when your body is full it's in carb burning mold but if there is no carbs to burn then it attacks fat. Now, I don't know the article word from word but that was the break down , LOL ! So don't get to critical.
