I use my Polar F6 when training on my Elliptical and the calories I burn are significantly less than what Spark would show. Spark is only estimates. It has no way of knowing how hard you work. The best way to know is to invest in a Heart Rate Monitor with a Chest Strap. Even though it is an estimate they allow you to enter all of your personal info; such as, height, weight, DOB, & sex. They really are worth the money.

Wow, very interesting question and answers. I have just a couple of observations. Somebody mentioned that the elliptical machines at the gyms base calories burned totals on a 100 pound person, but the machines at my gym allow you to program your own weight in at the beginning of the work out. This should give you a pretty accurate number for your size.
Somebody else mentioned that the difference between the pedometer and the elliptical was very different. I have noticed that my pedometer never gives me an accurate reading when on the elliptical. The pedometer, I think, works on the impact so naturally it would not pick up all of the lower impact motion that you get on the elliptical.
The added weight does make some difference overall. But once you are moving, you dont quite have the same effect as if you were wearing 100 pound pack and hiking. Its the problem with the wheels being involved.
Now if you were going uphill the entire way, you could easily notice the difference even with good gear switching and it would be a decent increase in over all work out.
A good heart rate monitor is about the only way to calibrate the difference between single and towing rides that I could find.
That's one where after you have some sort of data to see how it impacts you on the same route, you could always tack on additional duration to compensate for the difference. Again, only way I could see getting that would be with an HRM.

I wanted to know the answer to this as well. I asked the DR.He said the same thing that Mel did. It burns more Calories because it adds resistience. It's like riding at a vigorious pace. Your heart monitor will give you the closet answer.

I wasn't the one that gave that information. However I do have the web site, I went and checked it out when the person mentioned it. I lloked at the site and it doesn't have anything for towing weight for biking.
On note I have to laugh at the comment about the "handle" name. Do you use cb's, by chance?
i do not know the answer to your question but someone asked a similar question the other day and a lady who's handle is ziggymom told the person a website that she could go to and it would ask your weight and maybe a few other questions and let you know how many calories you burned maybe you should try to look her up and ask her the website address if it is that important to you sorry i cant remember the address myself
I wear a heartrate monitor when I go to the gym. The machines calculate calorie burn based on a 100 lb person, it is significantly higher. Follow your monitor/pedometer they are more accurate for you. Patty

I wore my pedometer at the gym while I was on the elliptical. The pedometer said I burned 196 calories in 35 minutes and the machine said 364. The fitness tracker here is significantly higher. So I was thinking I'd just choose this monitor and lose more calories. I know it doesn't work that way, I'm just making an example of the differences. They are all estimates and I would think that pulling the trailer would make it harder to ride the bike and therefore you would burn more calories or AT LEAST build more muscle. I have a feeling there are a lot of different answers to this question and the only true one will be what actually happens.

Whoever responded in the general fitness is correct. Biking isn't weight dependent. The only factor is how fast and how far you go. It only feels harder because with the trailer you have more resistance. A heart rate monitor that gives calorie counts will help over all because one of the things that the general prediction calculators can't take into consideration is the effort a person puts forth to complete an activity.
Calorie counts for anything (even the heart rate monitors) are just estimates. You probably have some activities that get over reported...just take it as a way to know that you might burn more calories with some workouts than others and it all balances out in the end.

I just asked the same question over in the general fitness message board the other day. I still haven't really gotten a good answer. Someone said it doesn't make a difference because you're not carrying the weight, but dragging my 40 lb son in a trailer definately makes a difference to me!
I just went for a 30 minute bike ride towing my two daughters in a bike carriage. Put together they weigh close to 100 lbs + the weight of the carriage? Does anyone know how to calculate how many calories I burned...I for sure felt the burn!
