I collect athletic shoes. I have just about every brand (Reebok, Sketchers, New Balance, Easy Spirit, Nike, etc.). I know this is pathetic! If you are just walking Easy Spirit is the most comfortable and supportive shoe out there. For running I like New Balance. It might be a good idea to go to a store that carries many brands and try some on.

OK! I went in and got fitted for new shoes yesterday. They said I'm a mild pronator and my old shoes were all wrong for that and that's why the plantar fasciitis problem started up - now I know what kind of shoes to buy - I LOVE my new New Balance shoes!! Thanks for all your advice!

Mahouneko, I do cross training as well. I actually went to Hibbet Sports and was advised there to try these. I think you should try the Asics Gels. They are really great. I have been doing a 5k walking race every month plus I do workout videos as well. I really think you would like them.

I have a pair of Aesics now, not sure if they are gel or not. Got them last yearand have been using them a lot. The fit is a little weird so I may have gotten the wrong pair for me.

It's so hard as my toes are much wider than my heel and I have a really high instep. Then on top of that my feet and ankles swell.

I need to go find a place that really knows what they are doing and get the right shoe. I walk and do videos, so a lot of cross training.

I was wearing Nike Shox when my heel problem started, soooo I'm going to check out the NB and Asics. I love shoe shopping, but this exercise shoe hunt is a whole different thing. Has nothing to do with being cute - more like trying to avoid injury - or keep it from getting worse in my case!

Mahouneko, check out Asics gels when you are ready. I was very skeptical at first but I am now sold on them. I love them. They are great and my feet never hurt. Now if I could just find some dress shoes the same way. LOL

A_Eaton2, you are not alone. I have a horrible time finding shoes, any shoes that fit correctly. I have had this problem since I was a child so I really hate shoe shopping. Exercise shoes are even worse. I know I need to go get a new pair soon, but really don't look forward to it.

I use to wear only Nike Shox. However, I now wear Asics gel. They are fantastic. I wear them for all of my exercise activities including my 5k races. My feet never hurt in them. I actually hate to take them off. I have never tried New Balance, but sometime I will have to try them out too. I highly recommend Asics gel. while they are a bit pricey, they are well worth the money.
Good luck with your shoe shopping mission. I hate shoe shopping. Can you believe that, a woman who hates to shop for shoes? I am not normal am I? lol

New Balance running shoes work well for walking and will help reduce stress.

Pun intended, but ... your mileage will vary with any shoe. Just some are going to start off better than others. New Balance has been a great company.

When it comes to trail shoes, or hiking, that's a whole different animal. At that point you have to dig into make sure you have the right ankle support, shank support, tread for the trails, etc. If you care about your feet at least. ;)

Shoes will make all the difference. Running shoes have more impact build in the heels typically and can prevent toe drag with their design shape. Work well enough for most gym training as well.

Molliebean: I laughed out loud and had to read it to my husband. :) You know having the right shoe for the activity and the foot is what is important, not looking all over for that shoe so that after you have it, you remember forever the brand. Hopefully this means that you had an easier time finding the right shoe than I!

I was reading all the comments on what are the best running shoes. And I thought to myself: What the heck are New Balance shoes. I started surfing the web to find some. And I seen a shoe just like mine. I took off my Shoe and what do you know They are New Balance shoes. They are the most lightweight comfortable shoe I have ever worn. I got them at Shoe Carnival. Buy one get one half off!

New Balance has numbers on all of their shoes. If you have a shoe carnival near you they have a great selection, and sometimes you can get a buy one get on half off otherwise foot locker has great selection. The higher numbers and some styles are gonna be more expensive but you pay for good quality and support. You can check out newbalance.com to see the different styles and numbers.

My husband had to see a podiatrist for pain in his feet after standing on the deck of a Navy ship for many years and then on cement floors for years. The podiatrist said the best shoes are New Balance. He said the higher the number the better the support is going to be. He said that these work great for running, walking and everyday wear. So we buy nothing but new balance.

I wear Asics running shoes and have for several years. I like how light-weight they are and the arch support is tremendous. Different styles and brands work for different types of feet, so try on several brands. A running shoe is good for every day support and doesn't make your feet tired. Good luck and happy feet!!

Wow! Good timing for this thread today. I am in extreme pain in both heels after trying week one of the Couch to 5K program. Obviously, my shoes are the problem (not to mention my treadmill is stuck at a 10% incline!). They were good shoes, but must not have the support I really needed in the heels and arch. I will take your advice to be fitted for good shoes - THIS WEEK!

They're great for anything I do. They're so supportive, especially for running.

I suggest you go for either Asics or New Balance.

My longtime friend has been a fitness instructor for many years and always recommends a shoe w/front pad support as opposed to heel support (UNLESS you are walking & running-then it's an entirely different fitness shoe and yes, you probably need 2 different shoes but walking shoes are fairly inexpensive). When you do aerobics, you almost always land on the pads of your feet & not your heels so I would stay away from walking and or even some cross-trainers which only offer heel support (unless they specify). Ryka offers a shoe w/this frontpad support is it's a fabulous shoe (I have them). They're a bit more pricey but you can find good bargains if you shop the web...do a nextag.com search for the lowest price.

Good shoes make a huge difference - I have a new fave in Asics. I wore Saucany for a long time. The initially the price for good shoes may seem high, but avoiding injuries is priceless IMO.

A good support shoe is critical. When I first started working out, I bought Reeboks and shortly after developed severe pain in my left heel. I had to see an orthopedic doctor. I was diagnosed with bone spurs and achilles tendonitis. My doctor's personal opinion was that Reeboks are the worst. She recommended New Balance and sent me to a specialty store to be fitted. What an amazing difference!!! A properly fitted support shoe is so important. It's very difficult to move and exercise if it hurts and you are damaging your feet and/or joints. Best of luck in your hunt! emoticon

I have tried New Balance and they don't seem to fit my feet right, at least the ones I have tried. I use Easy Spirit shoes. They have many walking shoes to choose from.

I also have found Asics to be my favorites.I get the ones with the gel on the sole.
I used to work 12 hours shifts, and had tried Reeboks, Nikes, and New Balance: anything that had a lot of support.

I also used New Balance for many years for working out, and they are fantastic shoes. However, I have switched to Avia cross trainers this year. They just seem to fit me a little better. They come in a variety of widths, too, if that is a concern for you. I use them for low impact aerobics, walking, strength training, etc.

I highly recommend New Balance shoes for a variety of reasons. One my chiropractor says they have great support. Two they come in a variety of widths as well as sizes so its easier to get a shoe that fits just right. And three if you go to a New Balance boutique the sales people are extremely knowledgable. They will measure your foot, look at your gate and ask questions about the kind of activities you do before making recommendations.

Another good option would be to find out if there's a shop in your area that provides similar services and knowledge but has a variety of shoe brands. They may be a bit more expensive then the discount places but for something like athletic shoes the extra level of service is really nice, especially if you don't know exactly what you want or need.

I need to buy some new athletic shoes. For cardio I have been walking and doing exercise videos. What is the best type of shoe to buy? Will a walking shoe work for both? Any ideas? Thanks emoticon
