My friend did help me clean up better and I'm starting to heal. Haven't got my full range of motion yet, but I'll be back on the bike in a week or so! :)

Prez97, how are you feeling today? I hope you got someone, like your nurse friend, to look at the wounds and help you clean them out. Its been a couple of days now so you're probably feeling REALLY sore. Hang in there and keep biking!!

If you haven't had a tetanus shot in the last five years, you should get one right away (within 72 hours of your accident). If you're OK on that front, you can probably dig out all the dirt after a long bath (I've done it more than once; it hurts, but you can do it).

Take care!

Go to Walgreen's and purchase a small first aide kit. There should be some iodine in there. If not buy a bottle of iodine from Walgreen's or event walmart. Put it on your wounds, it will clean it well. You should put neosporin on and try to bandage them after you clean them. Good luck.

I really wish you could go to a walk in clinic like someone else said. I know Walgreens has them, as I am sure do other drug stores.

My son had the same thing happen to him. We tried to clean it at home but when your kid is screaming you don't always see it all. Well, the next day it was swollen and such and he had to go to the doctor and they cleaned it out at the doctor's office. Wonder if a nurse at your doctor's office could do it. No need to see the doctor himself/herself.

My daughter knows how you feel. Two years ago she whiped out on her bike and got road rash on her face. She still has a scar under her nose. She had to go to girl scout camp the next day and meet lots of new people and answer over and over about what happened.

I so hope your feeling better.

One day I was riding my bike with my dog cause it was my only way around. And she decided that she had to use the bathroom stoped very suddenly and threw me off. I gashed my leg and my elbow and my hip. I got to the store and bought a scratch off won 50 bucks. Just try to stay on the bright side even if it envolves bruises.

You do need to put Neosporin or another triple antibiotic ointment on it. The triple antibiotic ointment from the dollar stores is the same product. It works exactly the same; it's just a lot cheaper....

When we are in Africa, we have to self-doctor all the time. Try this.
Soak the wounds (and you) in the tub. Try gently washing the areas with a gentle antibacterial soap. The gravel that doesn't fall off immediately will likely in a day or two.
Put antibiotic ointment on all abrasions. Observe for infection. Call your doctor or go to an "emergycare center" if you have a fever, redness, swelling or drainage from the areas.

Take something for pain such as Ibuprofen, Tylenol, or Aspirin.

Try taking a shower and washing it out. If you don't, it could get infected.

My daughter had terrible road rash from a bike accident also.

The ER took a brush like a brush you use for cleaning under your nails with soap and water and scrubbed it out.

I know it will hurt, but it's very important to get out the gravel and dirt!

Good luck! emoticon

I had the road rash on my knees from falling off my bike and it is not a very pleasant feeling. I went to the emergency room and they cleaned me up, but even that was painful. I think the worst pain was the next day when my knee was so very stiff.

There was some good advice given and please heed the warning about the hydrogen peroxide. Dilute it if your wound is deep.

Take care and do not be discourage, this is just a bump in the road and you will overcome.

Thanks for all the kind words and advice. I did try to go to urgent care only to find that the only center less than 40 minutes away closed down. I'm thinking of calling a friend who is a nurse this evening to see if she'll look at it. Meanwhile I'm keeping it covered with neosporin and bandages. Thanks again - I needed all the support today!

Be careful with hydrogen peroxide. It can cause tissue damage so it is best to dilute it out fifty/fifty with water if you are going to use it.

The best thing for wound care is irrigating the wounds. If you cannot get to a doctor to help you out in this, the soaking with warm water and epsom salt is your best bet. As I tell my staff...."dilution is the solution to polution." Diluting out the bacteria will help your body wall it off and get rid of it.

I've done that before - it hurts like you-know-what! I soaked in a warm bath with some baking soda in the water to clean out my leg when the same thing happened to me. Might try that. If nothing else, you can go to one of the walk-in minor-emergency clinics. You don't need an appointment and they'll take care of you. Good luck!

My husband did the same thing a couple of years ago. He did not go to the emergency room and should have he had a nasty gash on his elbow that took 3 months to heal without stitches. If someone can run to the drugstore and they sell Blairex Sterile Wound Wash Saline it's made specifically to cleanse wounds and the nozzle sprays with gentle pressure. I cleaned a lot of wounds when my husband had his bike accident and this worked the best. Hope you feel better soon

I don't know if I can make you feel any better but I can give you some advice on how to clean your wound. In emergency, we just use a surgical brush -- its like a soft nail brush but its impregnated with cleaner. Pick something like that up (but make sure its soft)in a dollar store, target or walmart and clean it with soap and water, gently scrubbing the dirt out - you don't want it to heal with dirt underneath. After thoroughly cleaning it - take a good look or get someone to look with a light on it and (if you have it) something to magnify it (cheap reading glasses, magnifying glass from the dollar store) and apply polysporin. If you have something like chorhexidine, you can put it on before the polysporin.

I've had to do this to lots of people in emerg & my son has had it done in the Drs office a few times too.

At least you've been biking - that's great. Try and keep it positive if you can - I know, easier said than done and I've been slacking off this week so maybe by posting this you'll help motivate other people too.

Good luck!

I would try a good soak in the bathtub. It has worked for me when I had "hiking missteps" and ended up tumbling down the hill. I then treated the wounds with dabbing peroxide after the bath. The warm bath helps the aches too. Take care, and don't be discouraged -- even us accident prone folks can do it!

First of all I am so sorry about you accident I hope you are not to sore. Have you tried soaking in a bath to get you wounds clean. Everybody face challenges and setbacks and sometimes they come at really bad times. It seems when you are really trying and making progress that something comes to knock you down. Just remember that success does not come to those who do not persevere and overcome those setbacks and the setback can make you even more proud of what you have accomplished in the end despite all those set backs. You can do it, let yourself heal and get right back on that horse (so to speak). The important thing is never give up!

The secondary infection from that accident will be an emergency room visit though ...

Road rash is horrible to let fester with foreign material in the wounds. I would strongly suggest getting someone to help you with it. I know from previous experience that you have to be really tough to scrub out those wounds properly. And in many cases they are just too freaking hard to reach.

While the ER is out, how do they feel about urgent care centers? They are "in between" a doctors office and an ER and can handle this sort of thing typically.

Also, start working on writing a letter to the insurance company about how this is not a minor issue. I dont think they'd like to have to pay for gangrene or staff infection and the time you'd spend in the ICU for that problem.

Get help from someone. It's going to hurt and it makes it easier. Depending on how deep, stick with just really strong saline solution and diluted alcohol flushes. You can make both easily. Warm water, lots of salt for one. 2 cups of water and 1 tsp of alcohol for the other.

Peroxide on the shallow stuff only and typically reserve that for secondary treatment.

Good luck.

Put Hydrogen Peroxide on your wounds. Even if you can't get all the dirt out, it will kill any bacteria that is there. I am sorry to hear you fell emoticon

I still have gravel in my knee from a bicycle accident when I was 14 or 15. Trust me...you don't want to leave it in there....soak in a bathtub with epsom salts...that should help.

Does your insurance/dr/med group have some kind of an urgent care? Mine does every day from 5-8pm so if I can't get in to see the dr, I just go there and sit and wait. It can take a while because it's all walk-in's but if I stick it out, someone will see me.

Is there a reason your dr won't see you? Can you tell them you're in a lot of pain or something to get her to squeeze you in?

Hope you're feeling better. Don't let this get you down too much. Try your best to be positive and focus your energy on what you can control today - like drinking your water, eating well, etc.

Maybe it would help to soak in a nice warm bath. At least that would help prevent some soreness tomorrow. Just an idea if your wounds aren't too deep.
Also Neosporin is great to help things heal.
Hope you heal quickly!

I just started riding my bike and bike commuting and I'm so scared of doing the same thing! Maybe you could use some pressurized water from a kitchen sink sprayer or something to try to get the dirt out? Dirt isn't the worst thing for you though, just disinfect and bandage.

I am so discouraged!! I fell off my bike when I hit some gravel earlier today. I've torn up my whole left side - shoulder, arm, knee and lower leg. I don't think that would even bother me much except I can't get all the dirt out of the wounds, my doctor won't see me and the insurance company says it isn't an emergency so I can't go to ER to get it cleaned. I don't know what to do! I know I'm supposed to be positive today, but I'm feeling like things never work out the way they should when I'm trying to do the right thing by taking care of myself.
